I have been messing around with various ROMs on my AT&T X10a. I recently reloaded the stock ROM and followed the Captivate guide to non-market apps with a slight difference.

The only difference for the X10 is the folder where the settings.db resides. Just replace any string in that thread that is "/dbdata/databases/com.android.providers.settings/settings.db" with "/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db"
I only tried the via ADB method but it should work with any of them as long as you have the right path to the source settings.db. Also, this does require root.
I would remake that thread for the X10a but I'm not sure if that is appropriate.
This method works great, but by using SQLite editor and ROOTExplorer, you can change this setting directly on your phone using method #3 from the captivate thread without copying and pasting.
With SQLite editor and root explorer installed:
1) Open Root Explorer...
2) Navigate to data...
3) Then select data again (the top of the screen should read "/data/data")...
4) scroll down to "com.android.providers.settings" and select that line...
5) Once you get there,select "databases"
6) When that opens, you should see the "Settings.db" line with the SQLite editor symbal beside it.
This means that you can edit values in this area directly. Select the "settings.db" line...
7) Once open, click the "secure" line...
8) Look for " Install_non_market_apps"...
9) Tap this line and hit the menu button and select "edit field"...
10) Scroll to the right and change the value from "0" to "1" and hit save.
11) Close root explorer and reboot.
12) Enjoy your Non market apps!
( I used this method on my X10 running 1.6 firmware)

Or you can just flash the 2.1 global firmware.

True, but doing this makes it easier to switch out custom ROMs because you can use titanium backup to restore your phones settings and apps from the SD card. If you try to do a restore without this feature turned on, it will give you the "Blocked can not install non market app" message. I couldn't get the 2.1 flash to work on my phone and it took me 2 hours to unbrick my phone!

Thank you for this, my AT&T phone has been shell rooted etc. for about a month now and I still couldn't install non-market apps making it pointless... But now the floodgates are open >

Yep. I was finally able to re-flash mine and I'm loving the 2.1 over the 1.6. Much faster and WAY more features.

What happens if you try: Menu -> Settings -> Apps -> Manage Apps -> find Maps in the list and choose Uninstall updates ?
You can give this a try. I pulled it from my titanium backup that updated daily, and the manifest says that is is version 4.7.0.
It keeps saying install is failed.
I'm on Uber ROM, and I think maps is baked into it. Other people were having problems with it too.
I'll try a re-flash and post results.

Ok I see what you are working with now. Just follow the steps below
1. Download the file below, MAPS.sh
2. Place the file MAPS.sh into your gscript folder on your SD card
3. Open the program GScript
4. Press your menu key
5. Press the Add script button
6. Press Load file
7. Now select MAPS.sh from the available scripts
8. Make sure the box next to “Needs SU?” is checked
9. Press Save
10. Now press the MAPS script
11. A blue screen will come up, now give it a minute until it says success at the bottom of the blue screen.
12. Exit out of GScript
13. Go to your favorite file explorer
14. Find the Maps.apk file that you downloaded in my first post
15. Now the file should be able to install without any problems
16. You can now enter the Market and update
I installed the Uber Rom and tested all of these steps with success.

Ok, that is fine it just means that you have already deleted a file that it is trying to delete. It also sets the file system to allow you to install the apk. Just run it all again but install the apk after it is done no matter what GScript tells you at the end.

Wifi Tethering Mod
Here are the original instructions use the zip at your own risk. It seems some people are experiencing problems with it...
I have modified the instructions to pertain to the Flex exactly.
This mod is not for the newbie, you must be rooted and I implore you to make a safe back up file in a new location of the file you will be editing. Actually two back ups, one completely stock the other you will use for editing.
I have edited his instructions for usage on the Pantech Flex running ICS.
Here’s the usual disclaimer: if you brick your phone it’s not my problem…. though I will help in any way I can as in my research I soft bricked my own device and was able to get it restored to a factory state.
Steps:

2. Acquire/Install SQlite Editor or any Android SQL editor of your choice, Install ES File Explorer or Root File Explorer
3. Navigate to (root level) /Data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/
4. Copy file settings.db Navigate to SDcard/Backups/ now paste file to this location
5. Rename the file in Backups/ settings.db to settings.db.bak (if all goes to hell this is your backup file)
6. Paste the file again so you will have two settings files in Backups one ending in .bak and one ending in .db (this is the file you will be editing).
7. Open SQLite Editor and point it to /sdcard/Backups/settings.db and open it. You now will see a list of settings locations. Click on “secure”
8. Here you are going to be looking for two distinct lines. The line numbers may vary by device so I suggest you list name in list view:
Line 1. softap_free_supported
Line 2. softap_entitlement_interval
9. Change Line 1′s value to 1 in the SQL editor. Change Line 2′s value to 0 in the SQL editor save and close or just close depending on the editor.
10. Using your file explorer navigate back to /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/ rename settings.db to settings.db.bak
11. Navigate to /sdcard/backups/settings.db(the one you edited) and copy the file go back to com.android.providers-etc and paste the file.
12. SUPPER IMPORTANT if the file permisuions on settings.db are not rw-rw-rw make them so in your file explorer.
If these permissions are no correct your phone will get stuck on the AT&T boot screen. ie softbricked
13. Reboot and you should be able to go to More in settings then Tethering & portable hotspot and turn it on set up your settings etc.
14. FYI under battery management you may want to change the value to never time out as it applies to the phones activity not the wifi activity.

Zip Method
You must be rooted and have CWM intalled.
1 Download the recovery mod zip file to the internal storage of your phone.
2 Reboot into recovery and make a CWM backup of your phone.
3 From recovery clear the cache and dalvik cache
4 Install the zip from the location you saved it to.
5 Reboot your phone.
6 Go to your phone settings wireless and networks, click on more, click on tethring and portable hotspot, click the box next to portable-wifi-hotspot. You are now up and running.
7 Personalize your hotspot settings in portabpe wi-fi hotspot settings.
8 Grab a free app like Hotspot Toggle to add to your home screen for easy one click on and off.

Its because the file you edited is in your data folder. You will need to change a few things in your system folder to completely enable it.

Use the manual method for now we have a new zip file that should be up within the next 24 hours.
The manual method only changes the exact strings of info pertaining to tethering so it doesn't disturb the system files etc.

Sorry guys all the zip installable files people have done for me have not worked for various reasons.
The manual method works tried and true on AT&T. I don't know about other carriers but I'm sure you would want to look at the same settings in the same file for changes.
By the way bluetooth tethering also works with this mod, but wifi tether yields much higher internet speeds.

I have an Atrix 2 running 2.3.6 rooted. (Rooted with SuperOneClick)
I want to enable the Wifi Hotspot feature, I have read several threads on this group, but I do not understand if I download SQlite on my pc and run it or my phone.
I downloaded the program on my phone, but when I open it all I get is a black screen with a box in the upper left corner with a magnifying glass in it, below that I see this "/data/data/com.xuecs.sqlitemanager/databases/defaultdb" The instructions I have read make absolutely no sense to me, the first step says "open settings storage" There is no way to open any thing as far as I can tell. I'm kind of lost here....Can someone help me out?
I want to update to ICS, I get an error, it downloads the file, resets the phone, when the android screen comes up the insallation bar goes about a third of the way then it stops and then it reboots, once its up and running it says "update failed" I have opened SuperOneClick and hit the unroot button, it says it was sucessful and it removes the Superuser app but the ICS OTA update still does not work. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

I figured out what I was doing wrong, I didnt have the File Explorer at first..lol Once I did take care of things and rebooted the phone I kept getting errors that said "The process com.motorola.service.main has stopped unexpectedly" I hit force close and cancel both but the error would keep popping up at random times, plus other errors would pop up random apps running in the background would stop unexpectedly. Then the power button would not lock the screen anymore....The tethering worked though! I ended up doing a factory reset because the errors popped up so often the phone was useless.
I did not touch anything else but Line 150 which was the Entitlement Check line so I have no idea what went wrong.
One other thing, I would like to uprgade to ICS but since my phone is rooted I can't do it OTA, is there a way to manually do it? I remember when I upgraded to 2.3.6 I just put a file on the SD card and installed it, can I do that with ICS 4.0?
I want to make Swype my default keyboard. I have have CyanogenMod's flasable zip and Swype's working apk. I want to replace default keyboard in the zip with Swype. is it possible to do it?

Ur question isn't clear dude.. if u just want 2 use it as ur default keyboard,do as my friend said.but if u want to delete default keyboard, delete d keyboard apk from system/app using root explorer

Long pressing to change the keyboard does not make the keyboard the default. Upon reboot, your stock keyboard is used or none if you have removed it. I have to change to Swype upon every boot. Very annoying. There must be a way around this. Does anyone know?

I'd love to hear the answer to this as well. Prior to last release of Android, Swype said that it was an Android problem and the next release would fix it. They stated on the user comments section that "we can't help sloppy Android code and it's not our fault". The problem was neither - it still comes up with the standard keyboard as default upon reboot every time

Try SwiftKey.
The issue happens with all paid keyboard.
Someone says it's an os fault..someone a Play store fault..someone a bad app coding fault.
The fact is that no one had made a fix.
It's there a way to fix this without touching the alt keyboard (I mean without moving it or installing it manually so to avoid any strange future updates failure) that can prevent the default stock keyboard to stick back as default at each reboot??
I mean..if I back up the stock android keyboard and then uninstall it with Titanium Backup..could it fix?

This issue happens with (almost) all paid keyboards, as the only available keyboards at boot are the stock and free ones, given paid apps are stored in a protected storage area that is unavailable at boot time, at least until the Google Play service is actually started.
That's why (for instance) SwiftKey Free or Smart Keyboard Free are indeed kept as default keyboards after a reboot, but their corresponding paid apps will not and hence the 1st available free/stock keyboard will be selected.
The solution (developers?) could be the paid keyboard being the same free app, working with a "license" paid app. This way, the keyboard would be available at boot time and could be enabled as default, while keeping paid/premium features.
I'm afraid this is an OS restriction (bug maybe?) not yet addressed but with a helper app. The best ones so far imho (just workarounds anyway, as they still require user intervention):

I managed to get it working on 2.3.7 & 2.3.8 successfully but the gesture feature doesn't work(coz it asks for license):sly:. Does anyone know where the Swype licence gets stored(somewhere in /system partition)??
swype somehow checks your build.prop file and based on that check, Swype will work or not.

First you will need to extract the needed files from a stock ROM. If you are still running the stock software, you can use a file explorer app to make a copy onto your SD card. Just copy and paste. You can also pull the files from the stock image or from the Iced glacier ROM. Pulling from Iced Glacier is the easiest method. Just unzip the ROM file and find the needed files.
There are two files, both in the system partition. The first is "Swype.apk" and is in /system/app folder. The second is "libSwypeCore.so" and is in /system/lib/ folder.

It seems you must also conciser the source ROM and destination ROM when obtaining the files. Swype does a device/licence check when running, and if it fails the check then Swype will not work. The build.prop lists "t-mobile/htc/ect" as product.brand and Swype seems to check this before running. So use a version of Swype from a ROM with the same build.prop or edit the build.prop manually.
Now to install Swype:
There are two ways to do this, ADB or root explorer. (or other file manager with RW)
Any extra info to help explain what is going on for any new guys will be in green text.
For ADB:
First put the files you extracted into the tools folder of the android SDK, then open an ADB shell to your phone. When that is done, use the following commands. (each line is a separate command)
Remember Linux commands are case sensitive.
First is to mount /system as RW. (this allows you to save files to /system)
Code:
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
Then you need to push (save a copy) the files to the correct locations.
Code:
adb push Swype.apk /system/app/Swype.apk
adb push libSwypeCore.so /system/lib/libSwypeCore.so
It may give the files the wrong permissions. (how much access to the system they have) Just to be safe we need to give the files the right permissions.
Code:
chmod 644 /system/app/Swype.apk
chmod 644 /system/lib/libSwypeCore.so
sync
reboot
Your phone will reboot and then you are done.
For Root Explorer:
Extract a copy of the needed files and put them on the SD card.
Then open root explorer and open the "sdcard" folder.
Next find "Swype.apk" and long press it and select "copy" (or if you have already completed this step once, copy "libSwypeCore.so")
Use the back button to go back to the root of the folder tree (up top where it shows your current location, it will show "/" this is where you started from when opening the app)
Locate and open the "system" folder.
You then need to tap the button up top marked "Mount R/W" (this will allow you to make changes and copy the files to the right locations) (this step should not be needed if you have already done so before)
Next open the "app" folder. (or if you are moving "libSwypeCore.so" open the "lib" folder)
Hit the "paste" button to copy the file.
Next long press the file you just copied "Swype.apk" and select "permissions" (or "libSwypeCore.so" as appropriate)
You will see a bunch of check boxes. The will be labeled "read" "write" "execute" across the top and "user" "group" "others" down the left side.
For "user" select the "read" and "write" boxes
For "group" and "others" select the "read" box only. Then select "OK"
When done with the first file, repeat the above steps again with the second file. Observe any changes to the steps that are in orange text.
Next open up a "terminal emulator" app and then run the following commands.

reboot
Your phone will reboot and then you are done.

however, this has not helped my with my Galaxy Ace with custom rom. I guess the build.prop files do not match.
You can try with your Fit however. You need to have the swype.apk and the libswypecore.so files from your Original rom.
You need to be rooted and I recommend use root explorer
The Automatic Way - Just Download titanium Backup or similar app Select the app and just hit covert to System app and reboot and if it force closes even on reboot go down the thread!!
Manual Way
1) Select the Apk Which you Want
2) Take the apk from SD card and copy the apk to /Root/System or any where in the Root
3 )Click yes When it Ask you Whether You Want to

The Current Files System is Read-only. Do You Want to remount as read-write and continue the Operation?
4) Select the file and change the permissions of the apk under select permissions
4) Tick all the boxes under read and only the first one under write and click OK
5) It should look like rw-r--r--
6) Then cut the Apk and pate it to /Root/System/app
And reboot and enjoy

OR you just use "Titanium Backup" from the google Playstore. Mark the app you like to convert and press "Convert to system app"

TRUE story but.wrote this if someone needed
In ios there was a separate folder with system apps that can be delete normally but if jailbreak u can access that fold I assuming that it wouldbe close to the same for android

Just search for - How to root " Name of your Device "
Then in recommend you to install titanium backup to uninstall apps easily for installing the apps just follow the procedure which i gave you

Hi, while millions of people wanted to change normal apps into system apps. I want to change system apps into normal apps.
I know this is the weirdest request you never found on xda history. But I need to remove system privilege on Google Photos because it blocks me from controlling background power consumption (only user app can be changed like that). I'm on realme UI 2.0 unrooted, if it has to be root I'd still take your advice. Thanks.
