[GUIDE] Basic Unix/Linux command to use with ADB SHELL

I am sure that many of the new people in here are not exactly sure how to use ADB under linux.
So Ive been reading the Evo 3D forum, and I found this really nice guide by vboyz103. You can find the thread HERE
All props go to vboyz103 for creating it, im just sharing it with you guys.
P.S. - I found it in the Android Development forum, so Im putting it in ours. If it does not belong here - MODs - please move it to General.

So I have been reading quite a few threads here on XDA, and the one thing I noticed for noobs to linux/unix world is that they are struggling with some basic command once adb shell is gained. I decided to whip out this quick tutorial to help those noobs out to become more of an expert...like me...lol j/k
Here we go:
Prerequisites:
You must know how to invoke a adb shell command already to drop into your phone.
ALL commands in Unix/Linux are case sensitive
For more details, go to this ADB tutorial (very good one): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=517874
Let's get going:
Once a shell is gained via adb, let's look at some of the basic commands you can do to navigate around the filesystem. Note: you must remove the double-quotes (") for the actual command.
Code:
"cd" = is change directory
to change to any directory, you type: cd dir_name (where dir_name is a full path)
Example: I want to go to /data/local/tmp in my phone, I would do
cd /data/local/tmp <hit ENTER>
You can also use the ".." to go UP one directory.
Example: I'm in /data/local/tmp and I want to go up to /data folder, a command would be: cd ../.. alternatively, if I do cd .. then i'll drop into /data/local folder instead.
Code:
"ls" = list files/directories
to list files/directories within a folder, the command should be:
ls <hit enter> => this will list all NON-HIDDEN file/directories within your CURRENT directory.
ls /data/local/tmp => this will list all NON-HIDDEN file/directories within /data/local/tmp directory.
ls -l => this will list all NON-HIDDEN file/directories within your CURRENT directory, plus additional details. Consider this is like a "Details" view in Windows Explorer.
ls -a => this will list all files/directories (including hidden files) within your CURRENT directory.
ls -la => this will list all files/directories (including hidden files) within your CURRENT directory, plus details.
Code:
"chmod" = change mode
Goes to wikipedia for more details: https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Chmod
Most commonly used modes on android phones are:
"755" or "777".
So if you have a root.sh shell script that you downloaded from XDA, and uploaded to your phone and try to execute it with ./root.sh and it said "Permission denied". That means your script does not have the execute permission. You need to do:
chmod 755 root.sh <hit enter>
[B]IMPORTANT: There is *NO* negative sign (-) in front of the mode bit. So it is NOT chmod -755 root.sh[/B]
If you get a "File or directory not found" error, which means you are chmod-ing a file that doesn't exist in your current directory. To execute a chmod on root.sh in /data/local/tmp you do:
chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/root.sh
If you want to chmod an ENTIRE DIRECTORY and ALL files underneath it you do:
chmod -R 755 /data/local/tmp => this will set /data/local/tmp and ALL files/folders underneath it to be 755.
Code:
"chown" = change ownership
Go to wikipedia for details: https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Chown
Most common used chown for android is: "root:root" or "root:shell"
Example: if you want to change ownership of root.sh to root:shell then you do:
chown root:shell root.sh
NOTE: the -R (recursive) option is also available for chown.
chown -R root:shell /data/local/tmp
Code:
"pwd" = print working directory
so when you are within a directory and you want to know which directory you are in, then you issue the command:
pwd <hit enter>
The system will reply back with the currently directory you are in.
I'll try to add more if I think of anything else useful, or if you have suggestions, please feel free to add.

Had to import it from a Japanese eBay store with a cost of £560 with delivery. First impressions of the phone are very good, nice big clear screen, batter life is okay considering the screen size, calls are crisp and clear, feels good in the hand to hold. Will have more info as I use it over the next couple of weeks

Rooting P-07D success...
I was able to root my Panasonic Eluga Power (P-07D) you can check the screenshot below. As of the moment I am re-writing the steps for others so they can easily follow the instructions as this was written in Japanese (Thanks to http://sithxi.blog49.fc2.com/blog-entry-51.html and goroh_kun. Hopefully this would help others root there device just like me. The only main problem for me now is SIM unlock the device.
Panasonic Eluga Power rooting instructions...
As promised here are the steps: (This seems to look like a temporary root, as you will loose it once the device rebooted) But still it's a good primary step. For the source code it can be downloaded from here. Panasonic Eluga Power Source Code

root privileges acquisition & tomoyo released experimental version in
the p-07d
things to do
Run:
1. >adb restore p-07d.ab
I press OK authentication
After the restore is finished
2. Open another command prompt and type the following:
>adb shell
$cd /data/data/com.android.settings/a/
$ls -l -d
drwxrwxrwx system system a
- check directory called A exists, it is world readable, writable as
show above
3. $ ls -l
⇒ file00 〜 file99 check if files exists
Delete all file from file00 ~ file99
run the command below
4. >adb shell
$cd /data/data/com.android.settings/
$rm -r a/*
change permissions to 777 /persist
This is the tricky part as you need to to do this using two command prompt, one running the adb restore p-07d.ab while the other on the shell command running ln -s /persist a/file99 command.
5. First run: >adb restore p-07d.ab while it is restoring on the other command prompt run in shell $ ln-s / persist a/file99
6. Now lets check the permission to folder /persist by typing on the command prompt that is already in shell.
$ ls -l -d /persist
drwxrwxrwx system system persist <--(you should see this)
Now move on your other command prompt window and run the following commands. (you can download the needed file at this link
Then run the command below to push the files needed for rooting:
>adb push init.cne.rc /data/local/tmp
>adb push p07dgetroot /data/local/tmp
>adb push xsh /data/local/tmp/
>adb push libQ.so /persist
>adb shell rm /persist/init.cne.rc
>adb shell ln -s /data/local/tmp/init.cne.rc /persist/init.cne.rc
>adb reboot
The next step is kinda hard to understand and I qoute: "/persist at Startup directory of the recovery process because it will not be restored and persist the only symbolic links should be a basic /data/local/tmp to keep the change."
After re-move environment variable is changed to check (LD_PRELOAD= /presist/libQ.so and be sure it is).
7. > adb shell
$echo $LD_PRELOAD
/persist/libQ.so <--(you should see this)
8. To Unlock Tomoyo, follow this steps:
> adb shell
$ cat /data/local/tmp/p07dgetroot > /tmp/xsh
$ ls -l /tmp/xsh
-rw-rw-rw- shell shell xsh <--(you should see this)
Make sure that wirelss LAN is ON before doing the command below:
9. WLAN ON / TURN OFF WLAN / TURN ON WLAN (wait to be connected before typing the below command or you will have to do it again)
$ ls -l /tmp/xsh
-rwsr-sr-x root root xsh <--(you should see this)
$ /tmp/xsh
/tmp/xsh
/tmp/.mem fd=3
read ret = 256
write ret = 256
At this stage, Tomoyo is now unlocked
10.
$rm /tmp/xsh
$cat /data/local/tmp/xsh > /tmp/xsh
11. WLAN ON / TURN OFF WLAN / TURN ON WLAN (wait to be connected before typing the below command or you will have to do it again)
$ls -l /tmp/xsh
-rwsr-sr-x root root xsh <--(you should see this)
12. $/tmp/xsh
$(precmd)[email protected]$HOSTNAME:${PWD:-?} $ <--(you should see
this)
Here is a shell with root privileges, so stand up and be able to work a variety. You can also install the su
13. $(precmd)[email protected]$HOSTNAME:${PWD:-?} $
$ mount -o remount,rw /system /system
$ chmod 777 /system/app/
$ chmod 777 /system/bin/
$ chmod 777 /system/xbin/
Open another command prompt:
adb push Superuser.apk /system/app/
adb push su /system/bin/
adb push busybox /system/xbin/
Go back to ($(precmd)[email protected]$HOSTNAME:${PWD:-?} $) window:
chown root.root /system/bin/su
chmod 6755 /system/bin/su
chmod 644 /system/app/Superuser.apk
chown root.shell /system/xbin/busybox
chmod 755 /system/xbin/busybox
chmod 755 /system/app/
chmod 755 /system/bin/
chmod 755 /system/xbin/
Verify root access by installing "Root Checker".
Note: each time you reboot your device you will need to run Tomoyo Unlock script to regain root access (Step 8 - 12) which I re-wrote below:
8. Tomoyo Unlock
> adb shell
$ cat /data/local/tmp/p07dgetroot > /tmp/xsh
$ ls -l /tmp/xsh
-rw-rw-rw- shell shell xsh <--(you should see this)
WLAN ON / OFF / ON
$ ls -l /tmp/xsh
-rwsr-sr-x root root xsh <--(you should see this)
$ /tmp/xsh
/tmp/xsh
/tmp/.mem fd=3
read ret = 256
write ret = 256
At this stage, tomoyo is released
$rm /tmp/xsh
$cat /data/local/tmp/xsh > /tmp/xsh
WLAN ON / OFF / ON
$ls -l /tmp/xsh
-rwsr-sr-x root root xsh <--(you should see this)
$/tmp/xsh
$(precmd)[email protected]$HOSTNAME:${PWD:-?} $ <---(you should end up here to regain root access, if not redo it again)

[Q] Hangouts - UAProf Modification

Hello Everyone,
I'm usually more of a lurker and use XDA to gather info mostly, but I've been trying to get Hnagouts to work with MMS for a while. So my issue is that I am using Softbank Prepaid in Japan, and Softbank for whatever reason is VERY particular about what is allowed on their network. I have a Galaxy S4 GT-I9505 and have been able to get the stock Messaging app to work with the MMS settings by figuring out the backend way of changing the UAProf settings so that Softbank sees it as an iPhone, thus enabling the MMS. (to do this launch ADB (on computer) / Terminal Emulator (on Phone, I believe SU access is needed) then launch command:
Code:
am broadcast -a com.sec.android.app.mmsprovision
Now I've been wanting to integrate with Hangouts for a while, and the settings that are available on hangouts doesn't really let you do anything, worse of all it seems to bypass the settings of the system, so the backend way doesn't work as hangouts seems to report it's own UAProf settings and doesn't seem to let you customize much. Even the custom APN settings seem to miss some files that are normally found.
Recently I have searched and I found that someone had posted about it in Japanese, using their HTC One (M7).
As I am not a programmer and work in very basics with command codes I was hoping someone could help me to make sense of this. I've used Google Chrome to translate the page but I'm still not 100% what needs to be done before I attempt it.
Please note that none of this is my work and it all comes from: http://d.hatena.ne.jp/shimooka/20140212/1392176717
From what I can see he has found a way to change the UAProf settings so that Hangouts reports that it is an iPhone. I can see that it needs to use ADB, but does it also need Perl and Java? also what is this modifying? Or is this similar to what I've already done using the command above?
Code:

I've rooted my phone with CF-Auto-Root-Chainfire‏
Please what is the solution.
Strange behaviour try adb shell then su then ls /sdcard/ or you can try other way rather then /sdcard.. Do ls on root folder there is another mount point of sdcard as well like /dev/sdcard or /block/legacy/0 something like that.. Dont remembered the excact partition name but it is there..

Recovering mmssms.db via ADB on Xperia with broken screen

Hi Guys,
My phone's screen has broken and I can't see anything, although the touch still works. I have been able to connect it to the PC to take my music and photos off the internal storage, and my contacts are backed up to Google, but my texts are not and I'd like to recover them.
I've read that they normally reside in /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db and I should be able to pull this via ADB.
When the phone is booted to the OS it is not detected by ADB at all with 'error: device not found'. I thought USB debugging was on, but obviously not. I can boot to recovery (custom CWM) and now adb will connect to the device. However, when I try to pull the sms db I get 'No such file or directory'
Code:
[email protected] ~ $ sudo adb start-server
[sudo] password for james:
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
[email protected] ~ $ adb shell
error: device not found
[email protected] ~ $ adb devices
List of devices attached
[email protected] ~ $ adb devices
List of devices attached
CB5122TH5B device
[email protected] ~ $ adb shell
~ # mkdir /mnt/sdcard/tmp
~ # cat /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db > /mnt/sdcard/tmp/mmssms.db
cat: can't open '/data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db': No such file or directory
~ # su cat /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db > /mnt/sdcard/tmp/mmssms.db
cat: can't open '/data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db': No such file or directory
/sbin/sh: su: not found
~ # exit
[email protected] ~ $ adb pull su /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db
remote object 'su' does not exist
~ # ls /data
~ #
It would appear the directory /data is empty but I bet that's because I don't have permissions to view the contents. I'm guessing this is also why su is not found.
Can anyone help me to get over this hurdle? Please bear in mind I'm not familiar with ADB and not great in a Linux shell either; the above commands took a bit of reading to find, but I do understand what they're trying to do.
My phone is a Sony Xperia T LT30p and is rooted running Xperiment 3.5 and Clockworkmod recovery 6.0.4.6 and I'm running ABD on Linux.
Any help would be appreciated! Cheers :good:
