Hey guys, new_b to the android OS!! After I root my captivate, what should I do after that? I hate all of ATT bloat ware, so that is coming off the phone, but what is the "must haves" after root?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897
Well the best thing with root is the ability to remove the bloatware and enable sideloading even though there is the sideloadwonder machine its best to enable it permently on your phone.
Clockwork Recovery is a blessing also due to the nandroid backup it does. you can download Rom Manger from the market and then enable that. You also would get Titanium backup to help you remove the bloatware.
Thats a start am sure others will tell you more stuff then I did
Thanks, that's more then I had to start with!

Look for a thread titled no reason not to root

The lag fix! Doubles the quadrant score!. The phone hangs in quadrant during the file system test and may happen from time to time in the real world. The lag fix can make a significant improvement in responsiveness when the system is under stress.
Look in the developers section, also the overclock is stable on most phones with no negative tradeoffs that I can tell.

What I did in order was root, Install ROM Manager, backup, Installed Titanium and removed the AT&T bloatware, installed Launcher Pro, ext2 one click lagfix. Im holding off on most of the tweaks until a month or so after Froyo comes out myself.
This forum is awesome! You guys are really helpful to us newbies! I'm wanting to update to froyo as well, but when you root doesn't it disable OTA updates...?
Sent From My Captivate
Well what most people are going to do that are rooted is wait and see when the ota is pushed to the phones and then probably unroot or wait for a rom to show up here and flash with odin.
I will probably wait till a rom shows up here before upgrading hopng that thats its tweaked or something
has anyone done the root that is in the market place? Or would it be better to download the program off here and root it...?
Sent From My Captivate
Use the program off here. Not sure what the one in the market is for. I do also believe rooting is phone specific and you need the steps for that phone

okay, I'm rooted, removed AT&T bloatware, and installed all the other stuff... also go the lag fix, is there anything I'm supposed to do inside the one click lag fix?

Sre. It has OC and a better tether option. Even better would be to use the new hybrid Rom with unhelpfuls kernel. No need to lagfix

Once you get your Captivate get Ryan's One Click lag fix and use it only to root your phone. Then you will have Super user permissions, next step would be Titanium Backup available on the market which you need root to get. Next step get ROM Manager donated version off the market and use Clockwork mod recovery through ROM manager to always perform backups before flashing new ROMs or Kernals. Yes, SRE is easy to install. The only trouble you will run into is Odin one click is for windows systems not Mac so you will probably need to have acccess to a windows based pc if you ever eff your phone and need to flash back to stock.
edit: so i need to root first then do the sre?
You should root first so that you have ROM manager and Titanium to back up before flashing SRE. One Click lag fix on the market will do this for you, but only use it for rooting not the lagfix. Tatuyama's ext4 lagfix is better imo.
Unhelpful's Kernal is included in SRE, fyi.
The new hybrid ROM still has some bugs and SRE is as good, imo.

thank you for ur response! it was very helpful! what if i use parallels and run win 7 and use SRE? if not then i guess i have to use UTB??
Nope, just an update.zip check the developers section. Super easy and no more odin needed unless you need to revert to stock first

so odin is basically a "factory restore?" and can odin be used only on windows based computers? so once i get my captivate i can go straight into SRE?
odin is a program that will apply factory firmwares to your phone. so whether you want to restore to stock or try some of the newer leaked firmwares available, odin is the tool to use. and as far as i know it is for pc only.

can u provide me to the right place for the tatayuma ext lag fix? so why aren't u using the OC version of sre? so u applyed the tatayuma then sre and ur good?
edit: nvm i found the tatayuma... just dont know what to use!!! theres quite a few to choose from!!! how did u all manage to choose the right one???
the tatayuma works very well with sre. the order i went in was flashed to stock rom->flashed sre->installed lagfix. i didnt want to go with the oc version because i think the phone is fast enough as it is and really what is another 200mhz going to do to this phone? as for the lagfix, i went with the ext4 as it has been proven to be more stable than the ext2. for me i am more concerned with reliability over power/speed. overclocking means more heat and more power being sucked out of the battery and we all know this battery is quick to die.
Sorry if this should be in a different thread. Not trying to get flamed. So I am coming from a captivate and am just wondering how is flashing stuff on the inspire different from the captivate? Typically most of my flashing was just done thru CWM on the captivate itself or thru ODIN. I know ODIN doesnt exist for the inspire, but what differences can I expect coming into? how do I get to recovery or download? Any answers on how the flashing experience is different would be much appreciated
Once you've rooted it's pretty much the same as captivate install rom manager and install Rom with cwm recovery. There isn't a need to flash back to stock. Just clear data and cache.

yup, clockwork mod makes life a hell of a lot easier.
And this restore a heck of a lot better than the captivate did. I don't even use titanium backup anymore. All my txt messages and apps automatically restores including wallpaper

Thanks guys, my only question is how to get CWM on this phone after root. Im assuming its thru a kernel?
same way you do it on the captivate get rom manager from the market. Install CWM Recovery.
There's no need for special recoveries like on the captivate as there's no lagfix craziness to deal with. HTC uses Android/Linux standard file systems

Totally agree, ill never get samsung again. I would probably flash a different rom on my captivate every other day to find out which one had what bugs and what didnt work correctly, lol. The Inspire is a lot harder to root then the captivate, but is well worth it when you do, for one roms are higher quality and all 100% working, even cm7 rc1. There is no download mode for inspire, you can manually boot into bootloader mode and from there you can enter CWM Recovery.
So i looked at the HTC hack kit, are there any better instructions for rooting? just didnt see anything laid out in that thread.
Another question for yall: On the captivate when wifi was active the 3g symbol would disappear. This doesnt happen on my inspire. Does that mean hspa is still running while im connected to wifi? Battery drain is my issue with this
there's a readme in the hack kit. Very easy to follow
There is youtube two part video walkthrough, thats what i used. I learn easier if i can see it happening.

On the vibrant (captivate) a bad kernel or Rom could mean boot loop and no hope of getting into clockwork and we would have to use odin. This doesn't happen on the inspire?
Sent from my Inspire '4g'.
ive had boot loop happen twice so far and both times i manually went into boot loader and went to CWM recovery and wiped data and reflashed then everything was fine. The one time i reflashed and still got boot loop i just restored back up and then flashed and was good to go. I made a backup right after i rooted so i wouldnt have to do it again, i suggest you do the same just to be safe.

lol dont mind the hijacking. the more questions asked the better.
the market auto restores your apps when you sign in with your google account, i cant really explain how it does this, but it sure is nice.
when you check back up my settings when you sign into google for teh first time, it starts keeping a list of market apps you've installed and restores them if you do a factory reset. doesn't seem to catch all of mine all the time though.
still have some questions regarding Flash
I read the rooting thread as well as saw the video, what I could understand is that in captivate we were rooting and then upgrading the ROM.
But here we are rooting and the downgrading.. Are we loosing any functionality? Its little difficult to understand..
can someone pls help?
You are actually downgrading the ROM then rooting THAT. After you have root, and have clockwork mod recovery installed you can install any rooted rom you like. There are a few to choose from in the Dev section.
The current Android release on the Inspire hasn't been "cracked" yet so you need to downgrade to get root.
Okay I am staring this thread because there are mixed answers in the official update thread and this might give one spot for noobs like me that are not flash addicts a place to find the quick answer.
Here is my setup:I am rooted, running a bone stock JH7 rom, ROM Manager installed, Circle Battery Mod installed, other than that no custom kernels, modems, radios, etc. I do have a couple programs that require root access like ROM Manager, AdFree, and ClockSync. Already installed kies mini and have it all set up per the instructions on samsung's website. Just waiting for the update to go live.
Here are my questions:
1) Do I need to unroot?
2) Do I or should I uninstall any apps that require root access or change the recovery image (ROM Manager/Clockwork Recovery)
3) Should I remove both my external SD and my SIM prior to flashing?
4) What data will I lose and how do I back it up? (I have read that SD cards are left alone just system data like call logs, sms, contacts, email setup, saved passwords are lost) I have Lookout installed so I know my contacts are backed up.
5) Could someone way smarter than me please do a quick write up that is more detailed on the steps needed to complete this update AND keep all your data? I don't mind reinstalling apps (just hope I don't lose all of my angry birds progress )
All of these questions are not address in any of the "official" information other than "you should back up any data you don't want to lose" but gives no steps on how to do it.
Same question here, I'm rooted with TiBU and voodoo lagfix and that's it., well besides deleting all bloatware. Still on eclair jh7. Wish I had done lagfix months ago, but I don't have a computer.

If you have a modded phone the smart thing would be to wait at least a few days before installing the update in case the rollout doesn't go as planned. These are the kind of things AT$T has probably been dreading as far as Froyo is concerned because I'm sure that come tomorrow their customer service lines are gonna be blazing like a CA wildfire due to issues with not completely stock phones and thousands of different configurations causing update glitches. I wouldn't be in such a hurry to update until I see how it goes for the "gotta have it now" sheep taking the first plunge.

Remember OCLF is bad, Mmmkay? Better lagfixes such as Voodoo and ULF
All lag fix should be removed. Otherwise, you will very likely end up with a bricked phone.
You can install Kies Mini now and connect your phone. If your phone is recognized without problem, you're good to go. Kies Mini is your only way to update the firmware.
I can't answer most of your questions, but I will recommend getting Titanium Backup. You can at least backup your app data since you're so concerned about your Angry Birds score. I think you can probably restore that after flash.

Not to be a negative Nancy, I understand some want to stay as close as possible to stock, but I'd just wait for a custom ROM to be built that de-bloats, adds speed, better GPS, etc... Cog 4 has a really stock look, and works really well; check it out. And with time there will only be others that will improve on the great ROM's we already have!

The other smart thing to do would be locate the TiBu backup folder on the external SD card. That way even a brick requiring reformatting the internal sdcard partition can be fully recovered from. Just take out the external card while restoring to stock, then root, get TiBu, point it to the reinserted external sd card, and boom, back in business.

I agree with flashing Cog.
However, I am currently trying to see how far I can get with the stock 2.2.
With that said, I used "SuperOneClickv1.7-ShortFuse" to root and allow non-market apps. If it does not work, remember to right click the .exe and run as administrator (if you are on Win7).
i want to keep it stock because of the just incase something happens and i need to use the warranty or insurance i want to get it back to stock in the matter of 2 clicks to backup all the att bloatware and unroot so i can send it in.
i know there is another method to flash back to stock but i dont really understand flashing different roms and kernels and want it to be as simple as possible. if i find a real need to flash a different rom and kernel i will learn more about it. im just not fully educated on much of this stuff.

Hey guys I use an app called cpu master pro it is made by AnTuTu I actually use a few apps made by them and in the power saver app they advertise a program for root. At the bottom it just says root tool. It is a new advertisement because I have been using the power saver app for a while since my g2x and so I checked it out. It is called "unlock root” You can find it at unlockroot.com.
You can root and unroot with it on multiple devices all you need is the drivers for that phone and make sure you have usb debugging checked. It is obviously a computer app and it is truly a one click thing. Now I have tested it out on my g2x and can confide that it will unroot and root it. I am running whitehawks weapon 3.0 ROM with dragon kernel overclocked to 1.5 ghz and when I hooked up my phone to the pc it found it right away and I hit unroot and it took all of 4 seconds then it rebooted the phone and it was done!! I tested it I was able to watch movies from the Google market on the phone and titanium did not receive root permissions. Then I tried to root it and did the same procedure expect I hit root this time and same results 4 seconds done!!
I am going to test it with my SGS2 in a few minutes but it is listed as one of the devices that it works with. So far it looks like it works on 4 HTC phones $ Samsung galaxy series phones and 4 LG phones. On closer look I notices that the SGS2 listed is the 9100 not any of the others but I also only lists the optimus 2x and the g2x worked so I am going to give it a try.
I just thought I would get that out there because I was just recently looking for a way to unroot so I could use google movies but I looks like it is a pain now because there is no flashable zip for it anymore. So try it out and let me know. And of course I am not in any way shape or form a dev and I am not responsible if this program makes your phone grow a brain and masterminds a plan and leads a robot army to take over the human race!!

yes it will work with gingerbread but I dont know mabout the new update that they just started up
And yes I did post this in the tmobile samsung galaxy s 2 forum as it is my current device but I still like to mod my g2x so I am constantly bouncing back and forth and I meant to post this in the g2x forum not the other because superoneclick already works for the sgs2 so it is not really relevant to them but superoneclick does not work on the g2x with the gb update but this does. So I made a mistake big deal Oh how I love people
Jboxer I know about your root.zip and I appreciate all your hard work that you do I did not mean any disrespect or anything you do allot for the g2x community and I could never come close to doing what you do. I was just throwing it out there it is nice to have options and I just thought that you guys would like to know that there is another method of root out there. Some people do not root their phone just because they are afraid of the nvflash process. I almost didnt when I was a noob. When you dont know what you are doing it can seem like alot to take in this is just hook up your phone and click root and done.

yes it will work with gingerbread but I dont know mabout the new update that they just started up
And yes I did post this in the tmobile samsung galaxy s 2 forum as it is my current device but I still like to mod my g2x so I am constantly bouncing back and forth and I meant to post this in the g2x forum not the other because superoneclick already works for the sgs2 so it is not really relevant to them but superoneclick does not work on the g2x with the gb update but this does.

If this app actually roots a G2X without the need to NVFlash CWM this is a big development for the G2X. We need some more people to confirm this works.
I am in the process of installing stock gb with no root and right now I am on froyo because I tried to do the lg update with no dice so I will report back in a little while
UPDATE
I just returned my phone to stock GB with stock recovery and I can confirm that this app DOES root the g2x with no problem even on stock GB!! I would like a few others to try and confirm it as well it installed Superuser v3.0.7 (41) and SU binary v3.0.3.
NOTE: I KNOW THAT I POSTED TWICE IN THIS FOURM TOO I AM SORRY I MUST HAVE DONE THAT BY ACCIDENT I WAS REALLY TIRED WHEN I DID THE POSTING SO TO EVERYONE I AM VERY SORRY ABOUT THAT AND IF THE MODS COULD REMOVE THE OTHER THREAD FOR ME THE TITLE IS: " New pc tool to root like superoneclick but it works on GB" I WOULD APRICIATE THAT THANK YOU.
What happens if we need to unroot for any reason is that possible?

In the OP he states the program has unroot as well as root. Unrooting is easy to do. If you had to you could unroot your phone by deleting a few files with root explorer and then rebooting your phone.
confirmed root on stock gingerbread!!!
going to perfom an un-root after i delete some system apps. will report back!

That is a good question. Personally I dont know the difference between this and superoneclick. I know that zergrush works for the sgs2. If you read the thread you will see that I did post this in the sgs2 forum also and the mod there closed the thread because he said that it has already been posted and linked me back to the zergrush exploit for the sgs2 then he also told me that this program is just a clone of superoneclick. But I dont know how true that is I think he was just assumeing it is. But last I heard superoneclick still does not work for the g2x with stock GB because I have read in other forums that people are tring to root using it and keep getting that same error so I dont think anything has changed but again I could be wrong I am not an expert on any of this.

thanks man. It works! I just bought a 8 GB microSD card and still when I try to install gamelofts "back stab" it says I don't have enough space. So I read about link2SD and it needed root. I came upon your thread and downloaded the LG driver for the phone, downloaded unlockroot and rooted, so easy!
Now I just gotta figure out how to use Link2SD so I can use my external SD card as the main memory. Can someone help me with this?
Oh and also needed the root for reboot widget. Yes I'm running Gingerbread update 2.3.3.
Thanks again OP for the heads up on unlockroot

You can partition your sdcard on cwm or other PC apps( I use minitool partitioner)
Then just install your apps, after your done with that run link2sd. Choose your ext partition you created to mount (ext2,ext3,ext4) then you'll need to reboot to get a mount script created on sdcard so that when you use link2sd it knows where to place them when you install or batch install.

Thanks man. Anyway I figured out how to use link2SD, how to partition the SD card on youtube but Back Stab still wouldn't install because of insufficient memory.
So what I did was download DroidSail Super App2SD which required root and then I moved all the Apps that I had on external SD to phone, formatted SD card, then erased, mounted and for some reason had 100% space to external card which according to elixir was 5.4 GB, which is weird because again my new SD card is 8 GB, but anyway now it allowed me to install Back Stab from Gameloft which is a dam awesome game which I got for 10 cents.
This program worked great. If all you want is root, them this is the easiest way!

Worked for me a couple weeks ago on stock 2.3.3 with no problems. Very simple.
