STEP by STEP instructions to update to PRI 1.40_003 - EVO 4G Android Development

After trying almost every way imaginable to update my PRI for a month, I finally seen a post of what Churchwin88 did and I did what they did and got the update in one try.
I will attempt to give the best instructions I can on how to update the PRI on your EVO since I know so many people have been trying for so long now.
Step 1
Boot into Recovery and Nandbackup your Evo.
Step 2
Follow this link and follow the posters instructions for installing recovery RA-evo-v1.8.0.
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026
Step 3
Follow this link and grab the zip for "HTC OTA Froyo 2.2, *FINAL*, build 3.36.651.6 (Rooted) Odexed" and put it on your SD card.
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=743352
Step 4
Follow this link and grab the zip for "Fresh Evo 3.1.0.2" and put it on your SD card.
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=743079
Step 5
Boot into Recovery and flash the zip file from step 3. (HTC OTA Froyo 2.2, *FINAL*, build 3.36.651.6 (Rooted) Odexed)
Step 6
Reboot system and when your Evo comes up and is finished loading, enter the dialer and put in ##786#. After it loads, choose MENU, then RESET, then enter your MSL number and accept the prompts to reset your Evo. Your Evo will power off and will start up in Recovery after it wipes the system. While in Recovery, follow the next step.
Step 7
Choose the menu for "Wipe"
Choose Wipe Cache and acknowledge it
Choose Wipe Delvik and acknowledge
Choose Wipe Cache again and acknowledge
Choose Wipe Delvik again and acknowledge
Step 8
Flash the "Fresh Evo 3.1.0.2" zip file from Step 4 and reboot system when it's complete.
Step 9
Wait 10 seconds after you see the "unlock screen" menu and then unlock it and let it contact the network and do it's thing.
When this is completed, you can check your settings and see if you have PRI 1.40_003 installed. Now you can boot back into Recovery and NandRestore your system that you backed up in Step 1.
I am confident that it will work for you if you follow the instructions exactly as it worked for me on the first try after trying to get this update for almost a month...
GOOD LUCK!

thanks for putting this together

I've been lurking for over a month and I figured my first post should be something useful...

Haha, sounds pretty much like my post in the other PRI thread. If so, I'm glad it worked for you and hopefully for the others.

I'm willing to give this a shot, even though I have seen multiple threads like this in the past that consisted of mixed results. I'll report back in a while.
UPDATE: PRI Updated after 2ND ATTEMPT! I have tried numerous methods with a total of at least 60 unsuccessful updates, and I do have to say that I was pretty surprised to see the beautiful 1.40 PRI! I was hoping something was happening since it took a bit longer to activate and update the PRL. I'm glad to see the PRI stick when I NAND restored back! I definitely see a noticeably stronger signal as well! Thanks thisizaremix for posting this method as I hope others have as much luck as I finally have! =)

Yep, you are the post I followed to get mine to update. Hopefully it works for everyone else too...

Thanks for posting. I'm tired of wiping and flashing so many other theories. I'll wait to see what the results are.

Followed that... didn't work. Still on 1.34

Downloading the roms now I will post later and let you know if it worked for me, Wish me luck!
Edit: I have a question, If/when I get 1.40 will I still have it after I nandrecover my old setup?
Edit2: NVM I did a quick google search and it looks like it will stay after a restore.

Yes, it stays.

Ok just got done and I followed the instructions to a T and i still have 1.34 I'm gonna try one more time.
Edit: I just tried again and still at 1.34

Just got done as well. No go. Still at 1.34.003.

I got it to work!! I skipped steps 7-10. I didn't do the wipes or flash fresh rom.

I hate you.
EDIT-holy crap it worked! ( i skipped the flashing of the fresh rom or the stock odexed one and used the ac rom)

nice guide -- i finally got my 1.40 in DFW TX today... i didn't go that involved, i tried maybe 30 times over the course of 2 weeks. I started doing the battery pull after wiping in recover, let it sit a few minutes, after the 2nd try of the battery method I got my 1.40
no real notice in speeds -- 4G is literally down the road a few miles will test tomorrow.

I put this in the original PRI thread as an update http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7642669#post7642669 It has active links now and just in case this thread gets merged with that one you are all set to get credit where credit is due. There were like 5 threads on this and they all got merged so just in case. Good job and even if it only gets a few upgraded then that's one step closer...

Did this twice, still on 1.34

Dude, I'm, on this... I was up with the guys last night on the unrevoked thread debating this. Going to do so, right now. You said the one ending in .6, of course, but the ruu, or custom made..
Links to what's what and where you got them would help.
Thanks.

The question that needs to be asked is;
What PRI did you start the above process with?
if you already started with 1.40, then you did nothing new.
if you started with 1.34, well then you may have done something worth while.

Yeah!! Sup bro? Any how hes right i did have .34 last night .. It doesnt matter which .6 PC36.IMG you use . After you ROOT with Unrevoked Forever you have root forever! does not matter which ****in hboot or any thing signed or unsigned u flash u got root. Also noted-- The speeds are the same but my ping was 350-450 and now they are 90 to 150.. the pri doesnt increase speeds but does in delivery (how fast data is sent to your phone from towers) follow the step and dont be gay----love GOONZ

If he wants the bounty, he needs to post which IMG he used to flash... Just telling us 'any' isn't going to cut it.

If it does work, I think unrevoked should get at least some of it because they are the ones that made it so you can flash the recovery after doing the stock update.

[RUU] Official 2.31.651.7 in ZIP Format, Flashable from Fastboot

As the title says, here's the Rom.zip extracted from RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.31.651.7_signed_release.exe for those that don't use Windows, or prefer to have their RUU in zip format.
This will flash your phone to 2.31.651.7 STOCK.
http://www.mediafire.com/?m6x4sr682ruk027
Simply rename this to HERCIMG.zip and place on the root of your SDCard.
Power your phone completely off.
Press and Hold VOL DOWN and POWER until your phone boots into HBoot mode.
Wait for it to verify the zip, then click <ACTION> (Trackball) to update, or <SEND> (Green Call) to cancel.
Enjoy!
Here's my guide to rooting .7:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804296
Personally..I want to say THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.
I have spent the last four hours searching for this. This needs to be stickied. I'm bookmarking it for sure. This got my phone unbricked..I thought all hope was lost and I would have to call in for warranty support (I got mine refurbed through Sprint last October..so I don't even know if I would still have any warranty support), and see if I could try my luck and getting it replaced, since that is what others have said to do as apparently this file from OP, did not exist.
And so for future reference, so that others don't go mindlessly searching through the forums.
If you
a.) Managed to overwrite your Recovery some how or completely delete it. (I did..and from searching this and many other forums over the past couple hours..I can see I wasn't the only one), and also have no boot (or a corrupted boot loop)
b.) Still have S-ON (You can find this out by powering off your phone and then pressing and holding the power button and the lower volume button), I recommend you turn S-Off for future reference if you're going to be dealing with customer ROMs a lot (so you don't have to go through the hell I just did..). See here..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=759955
c.) Have an updated Hboot (1.47) (you can also find this info. in part b.)
....then you KNOW that you are stuck. Because you
a.) Cannot flash a ROM in Recovery because you cannot access it.
b.) You cannot access ADB because your phone won't go that far and will only go into fastboot..
c.) But even though you have access to fastboot you can't do ANYTHING like flash a recovery image or a ROM..or anything for that matter..because S is still ON. (this is the "not allow" messages you will see pop up.)
d.) You have bootloader 1.47 so if you for example, were like me couldn't use this file here.. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=657086), because it would say there was a newer version and wouldn't install it.
So this file right here..was the only thing getting my phone back to a usable state. And considering that my searches have shown to pretty much give up all hope and have it sent it for warranty repair, then I think this thread deserves a bump for all those that have screwed up.
Yeah..I have to start ALL OVER now from a stock ROM (thank god for nandroid), but at least my phone isn't a dead brick.
Just thought this needed a well deserved bump.
I wonder if there is a RUU for the latest .2?

Forgive me for seeming NOOBish... but I can use this to do the same, then restore Nandroid back and it will keep the PRL/Profile update?
Just wondering... lolz, thanks!
Yup But you will have to reroot. This takes root from you. You will have to reroot with the Hero rooter from Reg or Z4 or one click root. But read read read. And as far as the prl/profile yup it will stick. When your phone boots up after running this just go into settings and updates and choose update profile and update prl don't update firmware. I repeat don't update firmware. After that just reboot and check your prl should be 60675. After that reroot, then flash a recovery and then nand restore. Hope this helps good luck
Remember this returns you to stock you will loose root and recovery..

Why don't you guys just flash NFX's or LS's already rooted and way faster stock sense ROM to update PRL, etc?
Running stock ROM has to be one of the worst things ever after being on custom ROMs for so long.
I tried flashing almost ever sense rom on here pmgrands port, ninfintes stock odex and deodex and his apps 2 sd builds he has like 4 or 6 different builds. Tried flashing liquids builds beta and stable. All gave me a error. So I had to use this. I couldn't flash any sense rom
and it was easier to use this than try to figure out y. If he can flash a sense rom then yea that's the easier way but if not this is a for sure way to get back to stock.

Yup. That's way better and faster. Just go into settings / updates. Then just update prl and profile. Don't update firmware. After you confirm that your updated just nand restore and you should be good.
Edit not sure if you would have to reroot.

Thanks for the reply's all... I like Sense and have NFX rom on my Hero, loaded a few ROMS but they won't update, so no worries, when I have some free time I'll sit and do it then. I don't like the one click rooters nor the clockwork recovery, I guess I'm old school and do it the hard way, lol, but thanks for letting me know it'll work (prl update) and stay on the handset!
Regards!
Without opening a huge can of worms I would like to know whats the best newest rom out there with sense I just searched for like 3 hours and lot of threads are old and I want what ever is new with sense also would like to upgrade to 2.2 im on Honeybun v.-2 lite firmware 2.1 update1

att one x wont let me flash rom..

Ok guys, so Ive rooted using the 1.85 method and unlocked my bootloader using the spoof cid and htcdev.com method. TWRP 2.2 installed, and thats about it.. downloaded CleanROM4.5, on PC moved to phone and rebooted into recovery, went to install and just comes up " Failed".. Tried twice and nothing. Got freaked out and even went and accpeted the OTA 2.2 att update, once I hit install it just reboots into TWRP and Thats it, from there i can reboot and what not and the phone functions fine a well, it just wont flash anything.. I guess maybe Im missing something..? Im not a complete noob, you could say i am a flashaholic with my HTC Inspire 4g so i dunno whats going on here. any help is appreciated..
recap
phone is currently rooted stock 1.85
Bootloader unlocked
S-on
wont let me flash, i dont get it...
If you downloaded from chrome that could be your problem, it messes up the ROMs. Happened to me as well..lol Try firefox, it works perfect
sinco54 did you :
Copy ROM to storage
Reboot to Recovery
Recommend wiping data / Factory Reset in Recovery!
Install ROM and Aroma installer will start.
Choose Standard or Lite Edition
Let install complete
Reboot to System
Profit!
I copied that from the first post of : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1655011
Before I wiped anything I made a backup of my 1.85 setup.
Not trying to incite you but I'm on my first android phone and it worked perfectly for me last week.
I used chromium on my pc to download the zip then transfer it to the phone, are you and SkookDroid talking about downloading the zip directly to the 1X? That would be weird if that was why it didn't work.
I tried the CM10 8/9 alpha today and had to change back to cleanrom 4.5 because the call quality was messed up. First I wiped cache and davlik cache with TWRP then restored my 1.85 backup. It said everything was ok but on restart it hung on the white 1X screen until 5min later I restarted and the restore finally took.
Good Luck with it.

The install instantly fails due to a bad download, thats why I said to use a different browser to download the ROM from the pc then move it to the phone and flash it lol
yuup, back up done, wiped dalvik and cache, fatory reset blahblahblahblah.. instantly fails.. Im downloading via mozilla right now but, gonna give that a while once that finishes up and see what happens.. and thats why im confused, it should work JUST FINE cause ive done this 8 million times but ive gotta be missing something obviously cause it should work.. the funy part is that the phone wont even let the OTA 2.2 from att install, it just goes directly to twrp and thats it.. thats where i get lost, i cant flash from twrp and the OTA will just boot directly into twrp so its like ive missed something somewhere.. Ill update here in a few minutes once i try again with a new download via mozilla.. thanks guys and sit tight..

No. Instead, people blame browsers for not completing downloads. It takes 15 seconds at the most to check MD5 sum and it can save hours of headache.

I was giving my opinion because chrome has given me problems before. Sorry we cant all be super devs like you, oh wait...
I wasn't trying to be sarcastic It's just that coming from the aria forum it was almost like written in stone (attn1) always check md5 before flashing anything. It's just a really easy way to make sure your not about to flash something that could potentially Bork your phone.

And your opinion is wrong. Browser has nothing to do incomplete downloads.

Depends on the devs. Some forums make things very noob friendly (like the HOX). Very convenient and nice of the devs, but when people don't even know what fastboot and ADB is, it causes a lot of grief for the devs. Just look at what happened with the scandal that almost deterred Scott from producing HOX roms. It's fine being new to the scene, but there are too many people who don't even care enough to read instructions.
Even some of the ROM developers themselves said the same thing about chrome, but since your the smartest guy around and no ones opinion matters but yours they're wrong too right? I've been here for a month, youve been here for two years. Im new to the scene and still learning, its people like you that deter newcomers from asking questions and participating in this site. Im not here to argue with you, im here to try to help out fellow users(WHICH I DID) so have a good day, sir.
yeah my bad entirely, i had assumed that because i was downloading from scott directly and not like media share or some mirror download that the md5 needed to be checked. but that still doesnt explain why 2 downloads via chrome were not good and 1 download via firefox is ok.. i dont know, but its interesting to me.. I didnt claim to be mr know it all, nor do i think i am at this stuff but your shamless sarcastic stab wether to be taken like that or not sounds like it..
I do understand this site has grown exponentially and many of the original guys are just disgusted with newbs like myself but ill tell you i do appreciate all the help ive been able to search for over the last 3-4 years as a lurker and finally registered a few months back.. I hate internet forums for this exact reason.. wether skookie was correct or incorrect he helped me and he deserves an 8 ball of the finest coke and 2 hookers for it. cheers!!
I want you to know that I try to help everyone I can and even have taken **** from some other members for not letting some members with redundant questions figure somethings on there own. As far as the downloads go I'm nit going to take sides because I've seen people report the same thing that one browser works while another doesn't. But my point still is what ever your using to download or where its being downloaded from there is always a chance that it can get corrupted or be incomplete so a quick md5 check just ensures a safe flash.

[Q] Trouble flashing Embryo 7

I'm running Embreo 6.11 right now but when I try the latest offering I get stuck at reboot. You can see Mohan's name and something else (but not the boot screen with the arms) and then it says application installer has stopped. Or not running but I think it says it has stopped, and when I go for a restart it comes up with the new orange restart menu and the pulldown menu is new and orange. But I can't get anything open, I can just get it to boot into recovery. Back on 6.11for now but wish I knew what I did so I could get 7. I did notice that I only was able to download the rom from what was maybe a mirror? I'm not techy at all. Just hard headed, but anyway the normal place I click to get the download on the thread didn't work but the mirror thing seemed to be a good copy since it was on the op. And I saw mohan's name during the boot...
Tried flashing a few times with the exact same result.
I read all the posts on there again and didn't see anything like this.
Anyway I would post in the dev thread but I hardly ever post so I'm not allowed. So if someone could have this moved or offer advice I would appreciate it very much
Don't worry you are in the Q&A that is good enough.
Mohan's Embryo works on UCMC1 radio. you flash the radio first (don't reboot) then flash the ROM right after.
If you've done everything according to the original thread and still no luck, I suggest flashing back to the stock UCMC1 and factory reseting (delete cache and data). Then root and install CMW and clean up cache, data, system, dalvik, (don't reboot) and try flashing your ROM again.
Good luck,
Commodore 64
Bad DL. Check the MD5.
I was confused about the md5 and need to find out how to check that. I flashed his stuff before without learning/hearing about this. I need to do a search but have a baby sleeping next to my computer and suck at typing on the phone so I'll have to wait to do the things advised. Thanks guys very much.

Download AFV (android file verifier) from market. Then you can check the md5 sum of the file you downloaded and compare to the md5 posted by Mohan. Hope this helps.
Thank you everyone for the help. I'm glad you guys don't yell at those of us who are a mess at all this just stumbling through it cuz "we want it" and don't pay attention. I never got a bad download before and didn't know to check the md5 sum or that I should always. Glad I haven't broken my phone yet due to carelessness.
I had my first bad DL.
Everything's working great now and SICKEST START UP SCREEN EVER!

[Q] First time rooting/S-Off/new ROM

Is there such thing as a guide like this one but that is up to date and with working links? I want to flash a new ROM onto my phone, but the guides I've found here and elsewhere have broken links, or use language that I don't understand, or skip vital steps. I've been working on this for four hours straight and I haven't gotten a single guide to work, or get stuck, or something else that's really dumb. For someone who has worked on computers for the last 17 years this is extremely frustrating. I'm very new to the android modding scene and apparently it's not just a community, but an entirely different culture and I'm feeling a bit shocked and confused. I have like 30 tabs open with guides, info, different ROMs, different ways to do it, etc and the more I learn the less I understand how to do this :/ I just want to get my phone working with a ROM that's very similar to stock Sense but without the crappy bloatware and memory issues. Miktouch is the one I thought I wanted, but apparently hasn't been updated in almost a year, and bulletproof/doubleshot is confusing. I can't even figure out how to root and get S-Of... Gah!
Please help.
This guide is confusing and skips steps or lacks real explanations.
Thank you.
First thing you want to do is root your phone, this is done by unlocking you bootloader through the HTC dev website. There is a tutorial that is stickyed in the developer section called something like root from any bootloader. I suggest to read that a bit.
Once you followed those steps and unlocked your bootloader you can decide if you want to remove all security flags (highly recommend this, but some find it difficult) in the same guide it explains what radio s-off is and links you to the jbear site to do the wire trick (needs Linux) (or find weekendstoshort for a way to do it in windows)
Feel free to ask more questions but all answers should be found in these xda threads and jbear site, no need to Google anything for this

First timer here as well (although long time computer user/programming familiar so I might have a better understanding of some things than you) and I was able to fully unlock, S-OFF, and load up a JB rom to my phone using the guide right on this site (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801106) and some help from some online friends that have done this kind of thing before. I found all links to be working, and pretty much all steps to be covered. The I guess hardest part was the permanent S-OFF using the wire trick. I had to burn an Ubuntu live cd and boot a laptop with it, but I was even able to get that step done. A little frustrating with the timing, I think it took me about 8 tries until it finally unlocked. The only thing I think I initially missed was wiping all 3 caches, so I did a dirty flash that got stuck on the boot screen. After I wiped and loaded again, no problems. If you'd like any additional help, I get pretty bored at work, so find me on aim or gchat, or just shoot me a PM here, I think I should get notified
Good luck, it's not as bad as I thought it would be
Also I haven't personally tried it, but feel free to peruse this thread as well: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1696373
Note you'll need to have already achieved HTCDev unlocked and be rooted to use this (covered in that first link)
Hope that helps!

I'm following the first guide you linked. So far it's working I just flashed CWmod on and I loaded it according to the instructions in the guide "After fastboot finishes, disconnect your MT4GS, go into bootloader, and go to “RECOVERY.” You should now be in ClockworkMod Recovery 5.0.2.7. The first thing I would do in CWM Recovery is make a backup of your stock ROM for safe keeping. "
But I forgot to d/c my phone. It still loaded CWmod and I navigated to backup/restore and clicked it. Right now my phone has the clockwork logo in the middle but it didn't give me any prompts after selecting backup/restore. What's it doing? It's been doing this for like 5 minutes. Should I be worried that I forgot to d/c the cable and whatnot?
Thanks

I wouldn't worry, and I'm not entirely sure what it's trying to do, perhaps the possibility of USB storage is throwing it off. At this point I'd say just try to disconnect it, pull the battery, and start back up into recovery, but without the USB attached this time. I imagine then you'll be fine and able to backup the stock image like they say for safe keeping.
One more dummy question (tech support for many years, always check the simple stuff first...) you do have SOME SD card in there right?

Yeah, 32gb =)
booted into recovery, clicked on bacup/restore...still just showing the logo in the middle.
(PS any mods out there listening, I'd love to have that 5 minute restriction removed =D )
Okay, so the select button changes from power to the scroll pad once in recovery...good to know.

Using CWM to flash Miktouch now. Hopefully it works... =D
Just remember, if you are "S-On" you're going to need to fastboot flash boot boot.img after your ROM is thru flashing or you will hang up at the boot animation.

K. First impressions:
When I restart the phone, the first thing it does is force stop Gmail and Youtube several times. Is this supposed to happen?
Also, I'm extremely impressed with the speed of the restart. It's at LEAST twice as fast as stock.
And, Genius button doesn't work even after installing the patch linked to on your website (universal.zip).

Thanks Weekends. I did that and it's installed, though I fastboot flash boot boot.img before I used CWM to flash the rom. Does that make a difference? Do you think doing it that way will fix the force close mentioned above?
If there's not a fix for the gmail/youtube force closes, is it possible to do bulletproof with s-on? Thoughts? I really want to stick as close to stock MT4GS but with as solid a system as possible.

Another noob question. How do I wipe all?
Also, when I use CWM to install Mikrom it atuo restarts and loads up. Then do I restart again and go fastboot the new kernal?
Thank you all for how much help you have given me.
At the end of the updater-script there must be a reboot command, but being this ROM is based of stock you may not need to flash the kernel anyway.
Best methods for wiping is one of bluex's superwipe scripts or with fastboot
fastboot erase system -w
But being you are s-on that command may fail.
But always do a wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik in recovery.
It also good practice to make a nandroid of current ROM before you flash anything
