[Q] Unlimited data plans - General Questions and Answers

Hi - This is probably a newbie question, and off the beaten path for XDA because it's more about US wireless carriers... but here goes:
If I sign up for a new standard 2-year contract with TMobile with their 5/10 GB-capped "unlimited" plan, and then at some point down the road (say 6-12 months) they introduce Tiered data plans (as AT&T did), will I be able to keep my unlimited plan until the end of the 2-year contract? Or will they be able to force me, mid-contract, to switch to a tiered plan?
FYI - I'm on the verge of getting my first ever smartphone. I've done all my other research (Already decided on Android over iOS, and as for a handset am planning on the Vibrant), and now this is the last question to answer before I head off to the T-Mobile store.
Thanks!

Well since im on VZW im not sure of my answer but based on what happened with AT&T when they introduced no unlimited data plans to new customers; so if you have one now on AT&T they let you keep it but new users cannot get unlimited plans. So i presume if on T-mobile that they give you an unlimited plan they will let you keep it even if they switch.
Cheers!

[Verizon] Tiered Data plans - Would I be effected?

Ok, so I got a Droid 2 from Verizon for free (don't ask, long story). Anyways, I'm due for an upgrade though my contract doesn't end till January of next year. I want to wait for an upgrade so more LTE phones come to Verizon (SGSII) though I heard that July 7th or so that Verizon is going to start tiered pricing for data. I use about 5GB of data a month so the cheaper pricing for 2GB won't work, though I don't want to pay $80 for 10GB. Since I am still a customer with unlimited data, if I upgraded later would it effect my data and would I be forced into crappy data prices?
If it makes a difference, my brother just switched (yesterday) from Sprint to Verizon with me on a family plan.
as of now anyone who has an unlimited data plan will be able to keep it when they upgrade but they havnt said anything on how long this will last
http://www.phonedog.com/2011/06/22/details-of-verizon-s-new-tiered-data-plans-outed-once-again/
I'm worried about this too. I use quite a bit of data as I use my phone for my own business. My contract expires in September and I was told by Verizon that I "should" be able to keep my current plan with unlimited data as long as I don't alter my current contract in any way. Worst case I may switch to Sprint and pay less per month, get a better phone, but have to take a hit in call service.
Sent from my Inc using Nil's Business Gingersense. Now that's Incredible.
or u do what i do and use a verizon prl so u get verizon service even though your on sprint lol.

Help with dumbphones and AT&T?

Hey I am a smartphone user and going off to college next year.. Currently on AT&T and in a family plan with my mom and dad. Our contract "expires" this July as its been two years. Unfortunately I have like one more year b/c my phone got stolen and I had to upgrade. My parents didn't.
Currently our family plan is around $110. ($30 unlimited data, no texting for anyone, cheapest voice plan)
Anyway, they use "dumbphones" and I was wondering, since they can leave AT&T in July.. Is there a way for them to use like MetroPCS and me to stay on AT&T and save some money? I know they have some unlimited voice plans (which is ALL they need)
$10 is not that worth it but if I can use AT&T and my parents use voice-only on another carrier for $20 that would definitely be worth it.
All my parents need is voice unlimited and decent coverage in the North new Jersey / new york area.. A sim-card service would also be ideal (idk if metropcs is, just an example!)
(I know this is a long post, but I have honestly done the research but just cannot find the answer.. I know some of you guys can though!)
--
Alright, if you guys can allow me to get data only and both my parents with unlimited voice for around $90, AWESOME!
However, if it still rounds out to like $100 or $110 (current plan), I might as well stay with AT&T..
If this is the case, what is the "best" dumbphone for AT&T? They don't need a keyboard, no data obviously, need at least 2 days of battery life, and a screen with some decent-sized type so they can see all the letters/numbers. Also would like to pay no more than $50 on eBay or other site.. Don't wanna waste an upgrade for a free phone if I can pay $50
optional: touchscreen. also optional but kinda important is some sort of expandable memory cuz they might listen to some music.
-- Sorry for LONG post but I think the questions are fairly simple if you guys know.. So thanks a lot in advance!!
Anyone have any info? PRetty easy questions if you know
Thankss
Anyone..?
please
Wouldn't their phones be locked to AT&T or are you planning on unlocking them for them?

With Verizon about to drop the unlimited data if you move to 4G, what do I do ?

So, as we know now, Verizon plans to end unlimited data sometime "this summer" for users that go from a 3G to 4G plan unless you plan to buy the phone at full retail unsubsidized - which you can then keep your unlimited.
Well, I am off contract right now as my latest 2 year contract ended about 3 months ago and have just been waiting for what I think is a worthy phone. That will likely be the SGS3 "this summer". I also still use my 3G Droid. And, I also only use about 2gb a month average, but like the idea of keeping unlimited for future growth especially on the 4G network which eats data use and because I am grandfathered in.
So I am not sure what to do.
1. rush out and get something like the RAZR Maxx so I can get onto 4G and keep my unlimited data and forget the SGS3 before the new tiered data plans kick in, but then not be able to get the SGS3 when it comes (unless I out right buy it).
2. just hold out for the SGS3 and hope it comes before "this summer" (or before whenever they drop the new tiered data plans) and thus, kill off keeping the unlimited data since I will be going from 3G to 4G and just get on their new tiered plans and lose my unlimited plan for the sake of the newest phone.
3. just hold out for the SGS3 and buy the darn thing at full retail - likely about $700 - and keep my unlimited data so get the best of both worlds but at a BIG price tag
Thoughts? It seems like my only saving grace is this "We will share specific details of the plans well in advance of their introduction so customers will have time to evaluate the plans and make the best decisions for their wireless service." as it seems to imply they will give us time to decide what is best ahead of when I really must make a move as I would like to see the SGS3 drop before the tiered data plans so I could go out and get it AND keep my unlimited data.

rumor is that if you buy a price at full price from here on out and are already grandfathered into unlimited data you do not lose it so either go to teired data and pay for overage charges and watch what u use, or just pay more for the phone

Well, I already said all that you repeated so not sure what was added - but your wrong... "from here on out" is not true as it has not started yet.
It depends on your actual usage I guess. If having unlimited data is truly important to you, I wouldn't chance holding out for the sgs3. I have the cdma gnex, and I am very pleased with it. I really don't see a substantial gain on the newer phones over the gnex, so my opinion is you should just upgrade while you still can and get the gnex. Wouldn't bother with Moto. They don't like their customers, it seems.

Verizon Family Plans will be forced to use new data share plans?

Before everyone flips out on me... give me a second. So I told my dad he was going to lose his unlimited data if he didn't upgrade his phone by today. Which of course he ends up waiting until today to do. Come to find out that he had to upgrade before today in order to keep his unlimited data. We are on a family share plan and only me and my dad have unlimited data, but my brother and sister, who are also on it, have the 2GB data cap.
So I told him to try to transfer his upgrade to one of them and get the subsidized price and just upgrade it on his line. So he tries to pre-order the SGSIII on my brother's line and this pops up.
"The existing plan Nationwide Account Level Talk & Text Family Share 2000, is not compatible with the new device." So it either chooses new individual plan or new share voice and data plan.
What's confusing though is that under smartphone data packages, it doesn't have the new family data plan pricing. It still has 2 GB for $30, 5GB for $50, and 10GB for $80 and under plan shares summary on the left side where the totals are, it does say "Nationwide Account Level Talk & Text Family Share 2000". So I'm confused as F*CK right now and I want my dad to keep his unlimited for at least another 2 years, but I also don't want to lose mine and get screwed over with this new family data share plan. Not to mention that fact that I'm not sure whether they are actually forcing us into this new data share plan or not.
Thoughts? Can anyone who has a family plan with an upgrade vouch?
If I may interject, this is why I'm on Straight Talk AT&T. I can't deal with confusing carrier pricing schemes. I know it doesn't help your situation, but thought it would be worth mentioning. Same service, lower price, none of the confusion. Anyways, I hope you get your answer bud.

Keeping 4G unlimited Data plan.

I signed up with verizon two years ago with HTC thunderbolt with a 4G Unlimited data plan. After that I have been just buying secondhand phones. Now I am up for an upgrade, but I know if you upgrade through verizon they will strip you of your unlimited plan. But I also heard that they are doing this to customers who have 3G smartphones, in order to get everyone to 4G. But if you have been grandfathered into a 4G unlimited plan, can you upgrade and still keep your unlimited plan.
I am not able to get a correct answer from anyone. Has anyone recently, who has 4G unlimited plan been able to upgrade and keep their plan.
Thank you in advance.

As of right now, Verizon is making everyone go to a share everything or tiered data plan. Those of us who are grandfathered in will have to switch to one those plans. But here's the kicker. This is only if we want to take advantage of subsidized phone options. For those of us who want to continue to have unlimited data will have to pay for our phones outright. So either we can enjoy phones at a cheaper pace (at least until VZW gets rid of subsidized phone options) or we can pay the 4-700 dollars for a new phone and keep our unlimited plan.
I'm keeping my plan on principle.

looks like no upgrading for me , just keep buying second hand phones.
I upgraded from an Incredible2 3g phone to the GN2 keeping my unlimited data by adding the new phone to one of my 2 "dumb phone" lines, then moved the GN2 to my line. The Verizon store Rep offered to do this for me knowing that it is a loophole to keep your unlimited data. I'm sure eventually that loophole will be closed, by I can speak from personal experience that it works. Several others have done the same thing. Hope this helps.

I upgraded and kept my unlimited data as well, there's three lines on my account and as long as I always transfer the upgrade to the line that doesn't have data, then after the upgrade switching phones with that line I still keep my unlimited. So in summary as long as you have a line without data in your account you can keep unlimited by doing an alternative upgrade.
Pro-tip:
Ask for an "A-List" device at the Verizon store. A-list devices are devices returned within the first 14 days they allow exchange. Mine was from someone who could not handle the power of Android and had to dumb it down to iOS, saved me a couple hundred bucks to let them borrow it and I still got a warranty
I payed $640 out the door (Accessories+Tax) months ago for my S3. 16GB White, Car Charger, Screen Protector 3pk, UAG case, new SIM (Do not pay for sim or activation corporate stores do it free, private will too if you mention this).
