Help with lag fix, wakeup lag and overclock - Captivate General

Theres a lag when u bring the phone from sleep mode. If Im playing music, it wakes up instantly. How can I make it wake up faster? Is there any way to stop the function of sliding your finger on the notifications bar to adjust brighness. I have flashed the unleash the beast rom when I got the phone and I wanna do a lag fix. Which one should I do and what do I have to do. Does the lag fix hurt battery life?, How much faster does the phone get with the lag fix, is it worth it? Will overclocking the phone to 1.2ghz make the phone faster too?, will that hurt battery life 2? and will the phone be stable with an overclock and lag fix at the same time? Hope u guys can help me out

I would like to first say that these are questions and should be posted in the q&a section.
1. You can install SRE http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=751934 after a fresh flash of jh2
2. The only way to stop the brightness from adjusting is by getting rid of touchwiz...not the launcher but the whole dam thing aka you could try this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=759011
but it has a lot of bugs and doesnt work with SRE. Might as well get used to it
3. Ext2 is faster(not much and only noticeable in benchmarks) and ext4 is safer. I'm not sure how to apply the fix with that rom so you might as well go to the thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=751182) and then use the search tool.
4. Theres mix result with lag fixes and battery life. Some people swear it hurts it and some people swear it doesn't. Personally I don't see that much of a difference.
5. The phone gets ridiculous Quadrant(Benchmark) scores yet people experience different speed with the fixes. The general consensus is that they help(why do you think that there are more being made everyday )
6. Of course overclocking will make the phone faster too.
7. Of course it will hurt the battery life too. It needs more juice to run faster. Soon though unhelpful's kernel will allow us to undervolt and we will be able to optimize the phone even further.
8. Depends on which fix you make and in which order you flash everything. Again i recommend SRE.
Also If you appreciate what I have just done and what people are enabling you to do with this phone you will at least skim the threads. I know all this info just because I lightly skimmed the threads. Theres a search button also and it works very well.
And please please please If anyone else is like this poster and you choose to not read the threads before asking questions then the least you can do is post in the q&a section. If you can't see this section on your phone then uninstall and reinstall the xda app.
*Exhales*
EDIT:
Also you can read this to help you get on the right track

Under-volting question

Ok I'm sure I'm going to get flamed and *****ed at for making a thread on this, but I cant find a guide on this anywhere.. lol.
I'm running Bionix 2 RC1 with Trinity15. I have plenty of experience with rooting and flashing roms, modems and kernels, and also over clocking. The only thing I haven't dabbled in is under-volting.
My question is, its there a thread on this that I have missed or is there someone that can explain the basics of what I need to know to properly under-volt using pimp my cpu?
Thank you very much in advance.

yea pretty much...
the safest process, or at least the one I would use is start with a base back, meaning stock voltages, no overclock or unvervolts... DO NOT DELETE THIS
now on your next boot up, set your overclock and take all of your voltages down 50mV. Run a stress test for 15 to 20 minutes, the longer the more accurate feedback you will get. Basically if your phone doesnt freeze or reboot you have a good undervolt. Now reboot into recovery and make a backup.
Rinse, repeat... make a new backup with your new voltages and from there I would go down in -25mV segments to be a little more accurate and basically just check for stability, if your phone is unstable then programs will freeze up or better yet your phone will just give you the old **** you and restart on its own haha
Typically I think stability at the top end speeds is best measured in the stress test and stability at the bottom speeds is best measured by the phone making it through the day without freezes or reboots... so the best way in my opinion would be to lower your voltages a bit each day until you find that breaking point where your phone becomes unstable...
cheers!
Good advice, thanks very much, I'll give it a go.

Agree with this mostly. However, I actually recommend focusing your UV tweaks on the lower clock speeds. Since the goal is to conserve battery power, modifying your idle speeds will give you more benefit then the higher ones. Also, by not changing a ton of different voltage levels at once, you can fine tune a bit easier. I'm not saying to completely ignore the higher clocks, but you'll probably find them to be less tolerant of UVing anyway.
As a side note, never be afraid to make a new thread in Q&A. The rule of "search before you post" applies much more to development threads then to the Q&A section. Those who browse this section generally want to help regardless of whether or not the question has already been answered 100 times before.

[Q] Can you fix screen-on lag? AKA Lock screen lag

I searched the forums and couldn't find anything regarding this issue with sgs4g...
I have have tried several ROMs (stock GB, ICBINB kj1, Valhalla, Octane), and all seem to be laggy in terms of the screen actually turning on when the power button is pressed. I don't know if this is an issue with customs ROMs or if it's the phone itself (though I don't think it was as bad with stock KD1). It only takes about a second or two for the lock screen to appear, but most other phones i've seen are pretty much instant. Any thoughts on speeding up the responsiveness of lock screen appearing? I wasn't sure if v6supercharger works for GB roms so I haven't tried that. It's just annoying having to wait to check the time. Thanks for any help! And I am VERY new at all this so please be detailed if you have a solution
Currently I am running
Valhalla 1.3.2 (GB KI3)
Drhonks KI3 kernel
Adrenaline shot vXIX
Are you using set CPU or some other program that can set custom battery levels? If you have your phone set to throttle down to less than 400mhz when the screen is off then it will lag when you wake it up.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
Nope. No special settings to adjust CPU Does anyone have a sgs4g that wake up quickly? If so what ROM or settings?
Interesting, I have the same issue. Figured it was just me. Seems sometimes I have to hiy the button a few times before it will come on.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
I think that happens to everyone.
Samsung just makes their buttons differently, you actually need to hold them down rather than bump them unlike most phones.
GB is still not official, but I think that it may be because of the CRT on animation.
Yea, it very well could be the CRT animations. Though even when I first got the phone it wasn't super fast in waking up. Oh well, guess its just a Samsung thing, thanks for all the tips and thoughts! On the bright side, I ran v6supercharger on my phone in an attempt to fix it... It didn't fix this issue but the phone is almost twice as fast lol. If anyone still has a fix for the screen-on lag lemme know, otherwise thanks everyone!
I just assumed I had been to punishing on the power button when I thought I had bricked my phone that now it responds slower lol. But I have noticed the same issue that some times I must press it twice to get it to wake. Glad to know it maybe an engineering issue with the actual button rather than a side effect of wear and tear. Would like this phone to last another year at least.
I am on black ice stable, and this doesn't seem to happen to me. I remember it happening to me a lot on gingerbread roms though. I suggest to get rid of any task killers, the apps have to stay in memory if you want them to load up quick.
I'm running Valhalla 1.3.2 and my phone wakes up instantly. The only time I have ever had any lag was when using setcpu to force the clock speed down when the screen was off. It was annoying as hell, so I dumped it.
To define what I consider no lag.
Hit power, screen comes on immediately, swipe miui lockscreen, there is the desktop.
My phone does it faster than I can read the sentence.
Valhalla 1.3.2
Honks KJ1 Stock Kernel w/CWM / EXT4
KJ3 Modem
XIX tweaks
V6 Supercharger
Go Launcher EX
UV @ Dsexton's Values
No OC
Note: I only recently add the V6 Supercharger and it made no difference to wake up time for me.

Thanks for letting me know that it is possible. I run the exact setting as you, except kernel KI3. I'll try flashing KJ1 and see if it helps. Otherwise I'm stumped. Thanks!

[Q] Does your Sidekick 4G freeze/reboot constantly?

I'm just curious because I get a lot of mixed answers, some users claimed they never had a problem and their sidekick 4G runs smoothly while others say their phone freezes and reboots way too often. Some have also said installing custom rom has fixed their phone.
I have my sidekick since last may it does not freeze nor reboot constantly the most that ever really happen was that the screen got mosit so it stop working. I have had no more then 10 battery pulls were the phone froze. Generally I pull the battery when I need to turn it off quick. (Used gingerclone, lighting rev2,glorious overdose,

this question may perhaps be a bit tricky. some users, like myself, may have installed a custom rom, but that alone may not have fixed the lag. i installed b2tb, but still had a lag, and quadnrant score was the same before and after the flash. before b2tb, i was on stock firmware, and my quadrant score was in the 9s. after flashing, still in the 9s. screen lag was the same. a combination of voodoo lagfix and v6 supercharger have improved my quadrant scores to anywhere in the 11s or 12s. extremely little to no screen lag and no other noticeable performance lag at all. but simply flashing a custom rom did not fix my lag.
Try GenericGinger 2.0, I use it. I've never had my phone freeze, EVER. The speed is good, battery life great. Quadrant Standard score 1700+ google search it. I'm sure it won't be a waste of time

I have been using this phone for a month, and it seems everything runs smoothly. just the battery life, like other smart phones, is disappointing.
Way too often for me, I'm not gonna lie and say it never did, evn though I love this phone to death. Too bad the only beastly phone out there with a keyboard close to the sk's is on verizon.
Then again, I'm not sure what I do that makes it freeze a lot.

Have had my phone reboot due to running completely out of memory some cases an others just wtf why you reboot momments. Worst issue i had was dealing with a possible issue in the built in kernal drivers for the bluetooth talking with my kia souls bluetooth stereo cause it seamed now an then at work (pizza delivery) the phone wouldn't disconnect correctly an would cause other issues, like...... overheating x.X an it wasn't the battery cause the face of the phone was hotter then the back where the battery was an by hot i mean like almost hot enough to cause a burn x.x! Love the sidekick an if the devs can make a rom that patches every single issue the factory firmware has in it I'll very likely go back to it, but at this time I'm happy with my edge speed on my captivate (daily driver) an X10 mini pro (amazing backup phone that never fails )
Completly forgot sbout this one weird issus. One day, I magically lost root, had bto reflash to get it back, I have no idea how it could've happened because I wasn't messing aroun with anything.

I had some major issues yesterday with glorious overdose rom, I switched to gingerclone v2 and all is well now. Stock this phone is a turd....
I had to disable the trackpad today because in sunlight it would go hay wire and I wasn't able to browse online
is that what it is when i feel my screen going haywire? i'll be trying to text someone and then it keeps scrolling up the conversation and then trying to do a search throughout that convo...jeez i thought it was just a nasty bug haha i'll have to disable it then, i dont use it anyways...wish they would have brought back the trackball from the SKIII....now THAT trackball was cool.
I disabled it and now im not having issues with it. I get this annoying browser lag tho and I need to stop that. I am looking to get a different phone now. Im sure someone who is a heavy texter would love to have this phone...

Omg! This ROM is perfect! This is exactly what I've been looking for! I wish I could hit the thanks button a billion times!

4th option - Factory Reset, Rooted, added App Killer and uninstalled most of the Bloatware (Like DriveSource)
works much better now, even with the Stock ROM.

Push PowerButton and Volume button [+ or -] at the same time for 10 seconds. This is a little faster & easier than a battery pull.
For a while I was using Ice Cream Sandwich v2.0 Domination with the ICS launcher removed and ADW launcher in its place. Everything was fine except for the Gallery. It would take forever to load picture, and occasionally, it would reboot my device if it took too long. I just switched to GenericGinger 2.0, and I've had no problems with crashes or reboots.
I'm running Gingerclone w/ Voodoo Lag Fix and V6 Supercharger Aggressive 2. Using Tegrak to OC up to 1.152 and I'm consistently pulling quadrant scores of 2200+.
On the stock ROM the phone froze and rebooted frequently. On GingerClone I haven't had it crash once yet.
***
Oh and I forgot to mention some things. First in Tegrak I set the CPU low limit to 200mhz and the governor to performance. Makes a HUGE difference in quadrant score and minimal effect on battery life.
Kj2 deodexed and rooted.
Stock browser, Gallery, and recently, Defender 2 cause it to lock up.
Stock browser and Gallery lock up less than on kg2 deodexed/rooted, but still do.
Gallery only on loading, and browser on scrolling.

Screen sensitivity adjust in clockworkmod recovery will cause MAJOR lag

I discovered that if I adjust my screen sensitivity under clockwork mod recovery from "default" to "sensitive2" it will cause my captivate to seriously lag. It makes almost everything go hay wire. This is just a resource for anybody else who might have stumbled onto a lagging problem.
I am using the corn 7.06 kernel(thanks mtcarey) and the legend 3.7 ICS ROM(thanks crt60), I have my governor as smartassv2 and my I/O scheduler as SIO. My LMK is at 70mb, instead of 48 default (this will probably change depending on stability).
My captivate has run smoother than it ever has on these settings, with lots of the bloat removed as well.
Can anybody else confirm this?
Corn 7.06 has CWM v5.1.0.7
Yes, I don't think it's lag, but rather that the sensitivity is just messed up. I would check the corn thread, as others may have had this reported.

I still do because I have to use my phone for work and being too experimental might get me in some hot water.
Plus, I'm waiting to see how the whole encryption problem shakes out. I know it's only a small chance of occurring, but that's a chance I don't want to take right now.

I'm not sure exactly what the problem was, but the boot time was much longer and every interaction was super slow, like homescreen transitions and such.. I just called it lag, there may be a better name for it...

Are you interested in going into clockwork mod to try and see if you can re create the issue? I'm curious to know if it's just my phone + tweaks/setup...
I can agree, at the moment I want a stable phone, I use my phone too often for school and stuff to be worrying about errors, besides finals week is next week for me so i need less distractions... I'll wait till I see a smaller bug's list on the ICS rom threads. I want to try it out, but i'm gonna wait.
I don't seem to be getting any lag after setting that tweak. I also have my LMK set at 78, but my governor is set to ondemandb because I found that smartassv2 would be slow to wake up from sleep and ramp up the processor.
Hmmm.. That's interesting.. I wonder what was causing my issue then. I'll try some of the other sensitivity settings later today when i have more free time.
I also tried changing the init.rc tweaks to the system corps tweaks and i got a similar lag which was immediately fixed by switching to no tweaks... I wonder what I'm missing here... If i don't have, any of these tweaks on my captivate is super smooth
Thanks for all your help!
At the moment i seem to be good at finding problems... As time goes i should get better at fixing them on my own and then i wont post silly questions.
Again thanks.

I think those tweaks in tandem with screen sensitivity may be doing something. I had maladroit.tweaks on when this happened
Sent from my CM9 ICS i897 Captivate
I wasn't using both at the same time, i used them separately. I'm just going leave it be for awhile i think. I'm so happy that it's running so smooth compared to before it was rooted and de bloated.
I'm probably just gonna wait till ice cream sandwich is more stable, or i have a new phone, then I'll mess with that.
Maybe I'll just wait till the galaxy S III. Anybody else excited for the possibilities of this new phone coming up? I guess that would be something for the questions forum though.
If you've got the time, can anybody give a brief description of what these init.rc tweaks are supposed to do as a whole? I read the system changes of each in cwm, but I'm not sure exactly what they do. It's fine if you don't answer, i know it would be a long post, i just wasn't able to find an explanation. I'll thank you if you do give a good explanation though.

ICS is pretty darn stable. It's been that way for months almost. Anyway, I can't really describe exactly what the tweaks do, but I know that http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1556013 uses some of those tweaks and explains it sufficiently.

No, i just now found out about thunderbolt...
I'm pretty stock, i'm on RFS, legend 3.7, corn 7.06, the only tweaks I've kept were the LMK and changing the I/O scheduler and governor.
Thanks again for all your input, i'll hit the thanks button for you guys. You're great for helping a beginner learn for the first time.
I have Thunderbolt tweaks in my ICS ROM. Not sure if they help. AOKP and kernel developers added their own support of these tweaks thru ROMControl, NSTools and Semaphore app. SQLite rebuilder is nice I guess. Zipalign is useless - all apps already zipaligned.

[Q] updated kernel to use with Slim ICS ?

I am running [ROM][4.0.4] Slim ICS(T959V)-UNOFFICIAL posted by beastmode, Question is there a more updated kernel I could use with it ?
I am thinking either [KERNEL]Proton Kernel build2[ICS][TFQ] or [Kernel]ICS/CM9 LZ Kernel from Team Fah-Q (Updated 20OCT12)
I am very happy with this ROM and GPS is working great (after a few hacks from other threads) but battery life is the worst !!! I lose 5% when using Waze/GPS plugged into the car charger and about 20% overnight just sitting there, I have tried all sorts of battery apps as well as turning off wifi at night with no luck. So I am thinking that a new kernal would help.
I only use the phone for GPS and Web browsing.
Has anyone used these kernels and with what ROMS ?
Interesting in upgrading not bricking my phone and installing everything from scratch
yes i am a newbie so apologies in advance ! Thanks.
Neither of those kernels (nor, really, anything else) is going to make Waze or any other GPS app stop using as much power as they do. If you wanted to change your scheduler and governor, those might make a difference... but anything with working GPS is a Herring kernels using the same paths to talk to the GPS.

Thanks for taking the time to answer. Even if GPS is a battery sucker what can I do about the fact that leaving the phone on takes so much battery ?
Could you suggest other stable kernel/ROMS for the SGH-T959V that support GPS and have decent battery life ? I like the simplicity of ICS and since all I do with this phone is browse the web and use GPS I really don't need any bells and whistles.
Thanks.
The two best ICS at the moment are probably Ultragen 1.01 (be sure NOT to use 1.00) or HebMIUI, which is the only ICS that still gets irregular updates.
The big thing to do with Waze is, if you don't NEED to stare at the screen, turn it off and just listen to the audio directions. Sucks down a LOT less battery that way, though it's still a bit painful.
Regarding general ways of improving battery life... look into Greenify if you haven't yet. Can tell apps to stop running in the background if you don't actually want them to. Just remember NOT to Greenify Waze if you don't want it to shut down with the screen off, or your music app, or anything else you actually want to use while you're not actively looking at it. Oh, and avoid Greenifying your email too. Though it's funny, it's not a good way to find out about new messages.
