Here's a rough tutorial to 'remove' some of the bloatware using adb. Since we don't have a working recovery or sbf file yet, it is preferable to rename files (change .apk to .bak) rather than completely removing them. This way you can simply rename them back if there's an issue. Keep in mind this is all case sensitive.
**NOTE: Do not remove BackupAssistantClient.apk, HelpCenter.apk or anything "Blur" related. As usual, proceed at your own risk**
Naturally, you need to be rooted and have adb installed before doing any of this.
Commands:
adb shell
su
mount -o rw,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
cd /system/app
mv CityID.apk CityID.bak
mv Skype_mobile.live.apk Skype_mobile.live.bak
(same syntax for each apk you want to rename - CASE SENSITIVE!!)
mount -o ro,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
exit
exit
List of files ok to rename (case sensitive):
CityID.apk
Skype_mobile.live.apk
MyVerizon.apk
Skype_mobile.live.apk
Vvm.apk
WorkContacts.apk
amazonmp3_1.7.22_signed_zipaligned.apk
Blockbuster.apk (may need to uninstall updates first)
Mynet.apk (3G Mobile Hotspot)
redding-7648-signed-zipped.apk (Kindle - may need to uninstall updates first)

Question
Is there a file manager I can download after rooting my Droid 2 that would allow me to do this on my phone with a GUI?
I am getting: "no such file or directory" When trying to rename any of the files.

I've used Astro & Linda and keep getting "Permission Denied". I'm guessing I don't have permissions to rename these Apps. How would I go about changing that?

Ah I see. Any recommendations on a free one?
Really hoping someone figures out how to dump some of this blur stuff, namely contacts, I'd like to go back to stock android contacts, the moto stuff is awful.
I'd like to know if there's anything else safe to "disable" beyond the list in the original post. There are some things that are always running, no matter how many times I force stop them. And these are things I have no interest in using, like:
-Social Networking
-News
-Weather
I keep killing them, and they keep coming back. Is it safe to "disable" them?
I got rid of the social networking app a few days ago and I haven't run into any problems yet

What is the file name for Social Networking?
Its Friendfeed or something very close to that but you should check
Thank you!
I've gotten rid of socialnetworking and bunch of related apks and widgets, plus news and news&weather and the other weather widget with no ill effects. Its been 3 days.

Thanks for the insight. I was wondering about those as well because my main concern is getting rid of all the apps running in the background sucking down battery and slowing down the apps and functions that I actually care about.
I removed the Social Networking already -- did you remove the Social Messaging apps?
Renaming dlna.apk doesn't seem to have caused any issues either.
Also, anyone know what Media Share's .apk is?
I find that it is faster after removing skype, amazon, blockbuster, cityid, and friendfeed. I swear the battery last longer also.
After playing with this phone some more, I see two problems: Verizon bloatware and Moto Blur services.
The Verizon garbage is obviously just that, garbage. The MotoBlur stuff really pisses me off because when I go into Applications --> Running Services, there are WAY too many services running in the background sucking up CPU power and killing my battery. I killed off every Motorola service I could find in there and the difference was IMMEDIATELY noticable. Everything was smoother and quicker -- switching home screens, scrolling lists, loading different screens. I would love to just throw stock FroYo on this and see how nicely it performs.

Is there any way to backup the visual voicemail data in its entirety? I've tried looking for the data files using ASTRO but can't find anything other than the core app.
I also came up dry searching this forum.
Thanks
This may or may not be of use to you, but the best way IMO to do this would be just to use Google Voice for your voicemail needs. All your voicemails are stored on Google's servers, so you won't have to worry about it. But aside from Google Voice, I am pretty sure that as long as you don't delete the voicemails, they will remain there after a ROM flash or whatever you intend on doing.

That's a good thought, but I already have over a hundred voicemails on my Hero that I'd like to save without individually emailing to myself. They don't survive my ROM updates, because usually I end up wiping first or else the ROM won't work.
Hmm... is there a way to refresh the Visual Voicemail app? I haven't used it in ages, so I don't remember. If there is, you may be able to refresh the app after a flash and it'll redownload all the voicemails.
Hmm. i'm actually curious if anyone knows how to get back to using sprint vvm cause i used youmail and everything is still forwarded there

To my understanding, as a former sprint employee, all voicemail is stored server side at sprint. We would always tell customers that this is no way to back up. Sorry, but I hope that helps.

Try using your sound recorder and see if that file is stored locally, should be. About the only way to back up your VM's

I am certain the phone stores it locally somewhere. Because when you receive a voicemail, it needs to download to your phone before you can hear it.
Also, if you put the phone in Airplane mode, you can still listen to VMMs, proving it is stored locally.
What are some good locations to look for where these files are stored??
Okay, I finally figured it out.
You need root permissions to find it.
You can find it at:
/data/data/com.coremobility.app.vnotes
The individual voicemail files are stored as AMR files. You can open them with QuickTime player.
AMR (adaptive multi rate):
Compressed audio format developed by Ericsson; used by many 3G cell phones for voice recordings such as MMS messages; incorporates the Algebraic Code Excited Linear Prediction (ACELP) algorithm, which is designed to efficiently compress human speech audio.
Now it turns out the voicemail data is stored in an SQL database called "vnotes_db".
I used Firefox SQL viewer to open it up. The data fields show voicemail ID #, sender phone #, recipient, guid (?), time sent, time listened to, and some other data.
The voicemail ID is in decimal in the database, but the file numbers are called VN-xxx.AMR, where xxx is the hexadecimal equivalent of voicemail ID.
Does anyone who knows more about computers know of a way I can take this data and automagically convert cryptic filenames to something like "mm/dd/yy hh:mm phone#sender.AMR"?
Thanks
where is the db located on the phone, and do you know how to push the vm's back onto the phone, say after flashing to a new rom?
thanks for your work.
UPDATE:
i was able to just once to get access to the /data/data/com.coremobility.app.vnotes on my phone. within that, there are a couple of folders, one titled "files" and one titled "databases". i copied those to my computer, changed and updated the rom on my phone, and was able to copy those folders back and got my old vvm on my phone.
i used droid explorer to get them off my phone, but i am having some trouble accessing the /data folder with it now, so i will probably have to use adb to push the files.
hope this helps anyone looking to do this.

than tried

chmod 777 /data/data/com.coremobility.app.vnotes/files
chmod 777 /data/data/com.coremobility.app.vnotes/database
( I think this is supposed to give me permission)
than i did
exit
exit (so went back to )
C:android/tools
from here i did
adb pull /data/data/com.coremobility.app.vnotes c:\voice
and i get filed to copy /data/data/com.coremobility.app.vnotes/files/blah.AMR to c:voice permission denied.
I would really appreciate any help. just trying to learn.... thanks
anyway, i found an easier way to back up vvm's. you do need an app from the market that you will have to pay for called root explorer. it allows you to browse your phone and copy/cut/paste files and folders, including the elusive /data/data folder.
all i did before loading up a new rom was to navigate to the /data/data/ folder and copy the /com.coremobility.app.vnotes folder onto my sdcard. i had a /backups folder so i just copied it there.
flashed a new rom, reinstalled root explorer, navigated back to the /data/data folder and then deleted /com.coremobility.app.vnotes off the phone. copied the backup from my sdcard to the /data/data folder on the phone. rebooted, and all of my old vvm's are on my "new" phone.
do not delete the backup off your sdcard until you verify they are all there. sometimes, you might have to copy each folder (there are four with com.coremobility.app.vnotes) one at a time to the right location.
i was using droid explorer initially to try, but i lost access to the /data/ folder on my phone. droid explorer is a great program to use while explorer the phone from windows, but i think it's still a little buggy.
good luck.
You don't need to pay for Root explorer.
There are two ways you can get VVMs off your handset:
1. Forward them to your email. Open each VVM you want to forward, hit menu, forward, and enter your email. It then sends to your email as a WAV attachment.
2. Tarball the entire directory and pull it off. Using adb shell, create a tarball of /data/data/com.coremobility.app.vnotes/* to /sdcard/whateveryouwant.tar then adb pull it off to your local drive. Inside are AMR files which are playable by Quicktime, and VLC player, and several other media players.
Won't Titanium Backup work? It stores the app and data. It's free! Just a thought.

Hey guys, I have a request for an app. I'm tired of having 5 different folders for music, 3 for pictures, and so on. Is there an app that can read a files extension, and then categorize it into an appropriate folder? For example, any files that have a .mp3 .ogg .wma etc. extension will be grouped into a folder called "music" any file with the extension .mp4 .m4a etc will be grouped into a videos folder, and then .jpg .png .gif and things like that into a pictures folder. I get music from amazon, from a music downloader, and from 3 of my web browsers, and they all save in different locations. It is very annoying and cluttered. Does this exist / can it be made?
BUMP.

Well, this can be easily done with a simple shell script which gets runs regularly by Tasker or similar app; heck, could be even an init script that runs on boot in case you do not mind the slowdown on boot...
However, note that some apps may not look at your single folder at all or need to be manually configured to look there. So, think about what you are doing.

I don't know how to script. Also, I'm not necessarily talking about an application pushing the downloaded file into one folder, so much as an application (or script) pulling all downloaded files into their corresponding folder. Pulling, not pushing. Hope this clarifies. If someone were to clarify this, it would be an amazing tool to be able to utilize.

For "pulling" something, you need some daemon running which will watch SD card and do something when a file of a certain type is created. That is exactly what stuff like gallery does (watch pictures/movies and create thumbnails for them). It is resource intensive and basically slows everything down.
Learn to use shell.
Code:
# busybox find /sdcard/* -iname "*.mp3" -type f -exec busybox mv -f {} /sdcard/Music \;
The above will move all MP3 files to Music folder on your SD (assuming the SD card is mounted on /sdcard). Use mv -n instead if you have files with the same name in different dirs, otherwise they will be overwritten.
I'm trying to remove some of the bloatware from my rooted OTA GB 2.3.6. I'm using Root Explorer and deleting select apk's and their odex file from the system/app directory. However there is one app called Rhapsody that I haven't got all the pieces, because the Rhapsody process keeps showing up in my running services list after I reboot. Both the apk and the odex file have been deleted. Anyone know what other file(s) I missed that are connected with Rhapsody?
Also, there is this rather annoying "media scanner" that runs every time that I boot my phone. Is this a must have, or can I delete it? It adds to my boot time, and if it doesn't have to be there, I want to get rid of it. And if I can delete it, what is the name of the app?

in root explorer you must delete the apk from /system/app and the associated data folder in /data/data then do a search of the whole system for 'rhapsody' as there might be little fragments left in dbdata or dalvikcache folders just delete anything with rhapsody in the name... as for the media scanning, there is a work around for this which I believe is putting a file named '.nomedia' in whatever folder you want excluded from the scan (music or pictures for instance), if you want no scanning at all put on root of SD card and that should stop it however this means you will have manually search/scan for anything you're looking for because that file will tell all apps trying to access what you're blocking that there's nothing there
blazing through on my Acer A500 via XDA app
The Media Scanner feeds Gallery and possibly the default music player. I don't think it is something you can get rid of, but I could be wrong.
There is an app called Super Manager that makes it very easy to mark folders as "noscan". I use it so all of my ebooks don't show up in the gallery.
I didn't know about the additional related app files being in the data/data. What might be the repercussions if I miss cleaning up all of them? Do they just take up memory space, or are they being executed by the system, even if the apk and odex files are gone?
As for the media scanner...I take it this is a critical system function? Is it an indexer? If the ONLY way around it is the ".nomedia" trick...and there are obvious disadvantages to using this method, then perhaps it is just best to put up with the extra boot time.
UPDATE: Just ran "Rescan Media Root" from the Market. It stops the media scan from occurring. And you can re-enable it at any time by running this app.
I also got Rhapsody stopped by searching and deleting the rest of the associated files. Thanks for the help guys!
I'm a little late here, but Rescan Media works fine to stop the scanner, and Titanium Backup has a "Chuck Norris" mode of killing bloatware.

no. i use an app called total commander. you wont find it in the market yet, so just google total commander for android or visit ghisler.com. when you open total commander in landscape mode, you should see a button with a green plus sign. if you dont see that, switch to portrait mode and hit the botton with the two green arrows. then you should see the green plus sign. when you hit the green plus sign, a window will pop up that says add/edit button. at the top of the window it will say change directory. click that and change it to internal command. then click where it says command and select 119 remount. this will only work with root access. click ok/apply. you will now have a button with an r on it. go into any partition and click the r button and it will remount as r/w. when mounted as r/w, the button will also display r/w. click the button again and it will remount as r/o. go into system/app and remount as r/w and you can delete any system app. when im done i usually remount as read only again just to be safe. you probably already know this, but you have to allow total commander su permissions for this to work. but thats how i do it.

there are several good ways to remove system apps. any file browser with root functions will do the job. i like total commander because it has two windows, you can copy from one window and paste in the other, i like the interface, and i like the way it displays folders. it is also free, and it is the "full version". its an app thats currently in development. right now release candidate 4 is the current version. i dont know when the official version comes out, but i know it will be in the market. also dont know if it will be paid or free, but i think free. right now its free, if it becomes paid, i will have to find another root browser that i like. but i hope it stays free. i doubt i will like any other browser as much as i like total commander.
i also have converted several user apps to system using an app called apps2rom. its available in the market for free if anyone is interested. its very straightforward. select the apps you want to convert, click move, allow the device to reboot, and voila! its done.
Titanium Backup Free also allows for free app block/removal (and this is for a *rooted* Sidekick 4G). (and it is what I have installed )
Just get a custom rom like glorious overdose..it will save you the trouble of going through each unnecessary app and deleting it..a good rom like that is already fast and lightweight..

some people want to stay on the stock firmware, myself being one of them. removing bloatware really isnt that troublesome. if you spend a little time figuring out how to do it, it really takes no time at all. removing bloatware takes most of the bugs out of the stock firmware anyway (now is the part when people start screaming about touchwiz being the main problem, but it works fine for me). not everyone needs a custom rom though.
I finally tried to block an app but found out that feature is only in the PAID (aka DONATION) version of Titanium Backup. Cheapskate that I am, I went to your "Total Commander for Android" (1.0 rc4) and downloaded it. Any suggestions on how to use it?

these are all the instructions you need to delete apps i cant explain it any better
I guess I am not sure where to LOOK for the system files. not sure which folders have the files in them (no clue about how Android sets up their stuff in the root directory) but I saw the R & the icons mentioned, etc.
open total commander. click file system root. scroll down, click system. then click app. then remount, delete the apps you want, then remount back to read only. if you are not sure what an app is or does, google it. thats how i figured certain things out. i dont remember what any of them are, i only looked them up and deleted them. i also suggest if you have cwm recovery that you boot into it after deleting system apps and run fix permissions. to do that, boot into cwm, scroll down and select advanced, then select fix permissions. you dont have to do it after you delete every system app, just delete a bunch and then do it. android stores permissions for every app, and i theorize that deleting system apps causes permissions errors similar to registry errors in windows. fix permissions takes care of that.
re-reading stuff now. Where to I move them to? I am thinking of making a new folder in my SD card and moving stuff there. I can then upload the stuff to my SugarSync account for permanent storage.
I removed the default Contacts APP. the "CONTACTS" word disappeared for the home screen. I used Go Contacts Pro. if I move that app into the system folder, will the "CONTACTS" Shortcut come back?
Also getting constant "android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly" Force Close error again and again. How do I fix this?
also, where do I find "cwm recovery"??
i looked here and don't see anything:
https://market.android.com/search?q=cwm+recovery&c=apps
AND
https://market.android.com/developer?pub=ClockworkMod&start=0&num=12
I tried this 1:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.stericson.permissionfix
But it didn't seem to do anything. Still getting the "acore" Force Close error
after a bit more research on the error, it looks like Facebook & Contacts are the main culprits. i will attempt re installing them back into the system app folder.
The Gmail 4.2 APK is signed by Google, but with a different key than the one in the Play Store (we checked the signatures - they differ). One is probably the test key and the other the production key. For this reason, you can't simply install it as an update and therefore need to be rooted with the ability to mount the /system directory for writing in order to remove the existing Gmail APK.
OK, let's get down to it. You'll probably need ADB installed on your computer (here's an easy way that doesn't require downloading the Android SDK). There is a chance that this might work without ADB by just removing the APKs mentioned below and installing the new one, but it didn't seem to work reliably for everyone.
This should, though:
1. Download Gmail 4.2 from one of the mirrors above.
2. Rename it to Gmail2.apk.
3. Make a Nandroid backup in case something goes wrong (this is always a good thing to do before messing with your device).
4. Delete (or move if you want to save the APKs) all other versions of Gmail. Usually there are 2 or 3 copies. One will be in /system/app (that's the original Gmail that was pre-installed on the device) and there may be a few in /data/app (these are the updates installed from the Play Store). They'll be called "Gmail.apk," or "com.google.android.gm-[number].apk," An easy way to tell is to look for the Gmail icon.
5. You may need to delete the .odex files matching the APKs in step 4 too, if you have them. Neither I nor Artem had to do this, but there are many different ROMs out there, and we're trying to cover all bases. Ignore this step and only come back to it if something doesn't work later.
6. Reboot. Once you do, you should have no Gmail as far as Android is concerned.
7. You can try to install the Gmail 4.2 APK you downloaded at this point by tapping it in your favorite file explorer (move the APK to your device first, of course). If that doesn't work, or if you prefer ADB, fire up a command line and type adb install Gmail2.apk.
If you get an error message, you probably didn't delete all copies of Gmail. If you don't feel like playing with ADB for Step 7, I've also gotten it to work by just copying the APK to /data/app, but that's not as fool proof as "ADB install".
