[Tut] (Root) Update to Latest Superuser - Droid 2 Android Development

Once you have achieved root (see other thread), to update the Superuser.apk to the latest version, run these commands:
Code:
adb shell
su
mount -o rw,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
rm /system/app/Superuser.apk
pm uninstall com.noshufou.android.su
Then search on the market for Superuser and download the one by ChainsDD. Confirmed working on latest Droid2 2.2 ota.
EDIT: To be safe, go to Settings>Applications>Manage Applications and find Superuser. Then clear the data. This should prevent any of the Superuser issues discussed.

sorry..new to the whole android scene. are there any advantages to updating the superuser app the the latest version and can this command be input on the droid itself through the terminal app?

i like the interface much more and its got a new autoaccept after 10 seconds if you arent paying attention when the popup shows. it's up to you. i'm sure future root tools will just include it.

alright thanks. is it as simple as installing the new version and uninstalling the old? or does one need to enter the command prompts listed above?

that is what the commands do. unfortuantely, the old version is on the system partiton. this means that we must first mount the system and read/write and then manually delete the old version ourself. then the new version can be easily downloaded through the market. anyways, adb shell means it's done via your computer so its very easy to copy and paste like 3 commands.

These instructions are not specific to the OS on your computer, they work with anything.

Perfect!
Worked great! Thank you!

Instructions worked fine (I just made them up for Linux), but the newest SuperUser is giving me weird results. Every program that requests root access will ask me numerous times, like it never remembers that I gave the app access. Like removing one app with titanium will it will ask me 4 seperate times to accept or deny permission. Other apps do this also. Anyone have a copy of the old apk I could reinstall? Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks

I had the same thing happen to me. Launch the new superuser app and go to settings. Unselect and reselect Notifications. Apparently it shows it being checked, but you have to recheck it for the actual setting to get saved.
After I did this, it only asks once for a program, and then I never see it again.

Nice, thanks!

I had that issue too. I ironically un-installed superuser and re-installed it and it worked fine too

I used Root Explorer to delete the old Superuser.apk from /system/app. Then I rebooted and installed the new version from the market. Worked great.

that works too though without having the superuser apk and rebooting, that could be a little dangerous for others hence my adb tutorial. no need for a restart either. could easily just use root explorer, delete the old, download new from market.

Worked great
I just renamed Superuser.apk to .bak then tried to install. Don't forget the last step. I had to adb (I was using terminal emulator) to do the last step then installed fine and removed Superuser.bak.
Thanks I like the New look.

I had the same problem. I rebooted my phone and then it installed fine. Not sure if it's risky to reboot once you remove the apk or not. However, it didn't cause any problems for me.

I basically did the same thing except I renamed instead of deleting it. Well, once I installed SU from the market, I can't find the .apk file even though it's running and launching correctly. I assumed it would be called superuser.apk in the system/app folder but only my old renamed superuser.bak is there. I'm just worried if there is an update in the future, I won't be able to rename since I can't find the .apk file. Anyone know where the .apk file is for this new version of superuser?

Tried this, and it didn't work for me. With Titanium Backup in particular, it will literally ask upwards of twenty times for permission. It's insanely annoying. Any other tips?

[Q] Swype Beta No Longer Working

I'm running XBoarder's GB 2.3.3 ROM Version1.2.2. I flashed it this morning.
The "old" version of Swype is working just fine. However, when I download the Beta.apk and try to install, Swype won't work.
I'm using Titanium to "Freeze" the original Swype so the Beta will load onto my phone. It used to work like a charm, but is not working anymore.
Anyone else having any problems?
Does it Force Close on you?
you have to uninstall completely the old swype. then you have to use a file explorer to remove a file called libswypexxxx.co or something like that. It is located in system/lib. Then you install the beta installer and finally you download the beta and install it through that app. you can also at this point use one of the swype themes, which look amazing.

Adevilfish,
How do I completely uninstall Swype? I go into Settings - Apps - Manage Apps - ALL APPS, and then I scroll down to SWYPE. It does not give me the option to Uninstall. Just to Force Close and/or Clear Data.
What do you do at this point?

It's a system app so you can't use the manage applications setting.
Code:
adb remount
adb shell rm -f /system/app/Swype.apk
adb shell pm uninstall com.swype.android.inputmethod
adb shell rm -f /system/lib/libSwypeCore.so
After that install the beta.
wewoapsiak ,
I sincerely appreciate the information, but that could not have made any LESS sense to me.
That was WAY over my head. I'm getting better with this phone stuff, but I clearly still am a "White-Belt Noob".
Forgive the following questions:
What was that?
What do I do with that code?
ADB---Android Device Bridge. How your phone communicates with your computer.
There are many alternatives, but if you want to learn about it, try here.
Or simply download Android Commander, it's a GUI for your computer that allows you to drag and drop or delete. Or use root explorer. There are plenty of ways. Delete the two files (Swype.apk and libSwypeCore.so), install the beta.
Can this be done using "Root Explorer"?

Yes. Navigate to those directory file listed in the adb posting above.

[Q] Showcase- cant root after installing CM7

would have just asked in :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1142872&page=67
but i don't have enough posts, and don't want to spam a bunch of useless "cool" posts to get my count up.
Anyways,I did every thing in that topic and have CM7 running fine on my Cell South Showcase. But, i don't seem to have root access superuser is there but seems to do nothing. i tried checking via the terminal with just a "su" command and got nothing. Tried Superoneclick (my go to rooter for awhile) and it just hangs at "looking for device" . and, Z4 seems to not work with 2.3.4 phones.
So is there any fix to this, or have i just hit some crazy bug?
I have seen some people allude to changing the kernel, but the last time i tried to upgrade/change the kernel on this phone i had to save it via odin
Don't you HAVE to be rooted in order to run cm7?
i know, it breaks all logic
i just know i cant grant superuser to anything, busybox installer says it isnt rooted, and Titanium cant do anything

Yup just an app
Also:
i have already flashed via Odin back to stock once and did the whole CM7 flash again from a fully clean rom
ok, Flashed Superuser 3.0 beta 3
no go, says my SU binary is out of date, and the app crashes when it tries to update it
checked my bin and xbin, both have a "SU" file in them
in terminal when i CD in to both folders and try to run "SU" i get an error that looks like it is trying to relocate a library and failing to do so
Can i just download the new SU binary my self and manual drop it in to the folders?
well that didnt work, cant modify anything in the system folder so i cant delete that old "SU" and replace it with the one from the superuser 3.0 apk
LOL
well i got it to let me replace the SU in /bin but not in /xbin
so now i got some half confused phone, i can grate Superuser "superuser" but when it tries to update or do any thing the log says "gaining root access....fail"
i still dont know how i have have a CM7 phone that by it very nature is rooted that thinks it is not rooted
ok for anyone who cares, i just gave up flashed via odin back to stock and tried the MIUI port, worked great once i fangled MMS in to working again
I had a similar problem, at which point I grabbed stericson's busybox app from the market which allowed me to flash a working busybox which after a reboot or two and running the installer again fixed me up..there is an app called root checker that can give info on su, superuser.apk, and busybox installs
I am almost positive that when I used jrummys busybox installer our killed root access on my phone. I had superuser.apk but without busybox it was rather useless as no apps could get root. the fix was flashing busybox 1.19.0 and leaving it in xbin and letting the app do its thing once I had rebooted.. then I rebooted again and everything was fine! after bring rooted for so long I don't think I could function without it!
for others out there, my experience has been this: stay weary of the jrummy busybox installer...its never given me anything but problems...and honestly unless busybox is borked, or ya have a damn good reason to upgrade or downgrade my suggestion is to leave it! the potential problems that can arise (for me every time, using jrummy's version..3 times) can be a pain!

i had the same issue but dont recall if it was CM7 that did it or not but i think it was.
i had to completely blow out the phone and start from scratch.
if i recall, CM7 uses a different version of SuperUser and it just want bonkers on me but completely blowing everything out reformatting and everything seemed to work.
If you're on CM7 already, you should be rooted. If not, try SuperOneClick (Google).

Installation:
1. Download files below, do not rename them! Transfer to SD Card.
2.* Use any file explorer and mount system as RW and delete file name (Root Explorer works nicely)‘Vending.APK’ and ‘MarketUpdater.apk’ from /system/app/. You can also delete folders com.android.vending and com.android.vending.updater in /data/data.
*Do a reboot.
* Open File explorer/ Root Explorer and Mount your file system as RW and copy ‘updater.apk’ from SD Card to /system/app/ and do a reboot.
* Now, mount your file system as RW from explorer and copy ‘market.apk’ from SD Card to /system/app/ and Reboot phone.
Edit: I feel retarded.. forgot to mention that this method is iffy on my rooted stock ROM, but it works great on my rooted custom rom.

acolwill[/B];16952837]What functionality? All I see is fancy graphics designed for children and iRetards, there's no discernible change in how apps are grouped or searched for since version 2.12.
I have 5 android devices ranging from the HTC Hero up to the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the new market looks **** on every one. Application presentation is marred with oversized text and incessant scrolling, making it slower to actually see information pertinent to what you are looking at. Emphasis should be on the applications contained within the market, not the market application itself.
Other than that, the obfuscated way that application permissions are presented to a user in the newer versions makes it far too easy for the layman to install things with less than honourable permission requests. At least in version 2.12 you HAD to move your fingers around to accept permissions, since then all it takes is two jabs with a finger with little or no perceived consequence.
The fault lies with Google for forcing the new market style on users, no choices outside of root&destroy.
So thanks for actually taking the time for making the Google apps look nice, just let those whom want the 'clean' version have their say.

The attached Vending.apk is the "old" market. In order to install it, you must be rooted and you need either a little knowledge of ADB or Root Explorer from the market.
Using ADB;
Reboot into recovery and plug into pc, mount /system using your recovery
From your preferred ADB console:
adb push Vending.apk /system/app
adb shell rm /system/app/MarketUpdater.apk
adb shell chmod 644 /system/app/Vending.apk
adb shell chown root.root /system/app/Vending.apk
Reboot.
Using Root Explorer;
Download apk to sdcard
mount /system rw
browse to /system/app
remove MarketUpdater.apk
remove Vending.apk
browse back to sdcard and copy the Vending.apk to /data/local/tmp
copy the Vending.apk from /data/local/tmp to /system/app
using permissions action, set permissions on Vending.apk [Owner: Read Write. Group: Read. Others: Read]
using set owner action, set owner to 0 - root, group to 0 - root.
Close and reboot.
The Root Explorer method may not work for all phones, and will not work on HTC phones which do not have s-off. The ADB method should work on any rooted device which previously had market access.

If you don't delete or disable Market Updater, new market will return... Maybe not right away, but it will be back. Also no need to reinstall old market, it is still on your phone. Just see my post above on how to uninstall the updates to market (Step 2 and 3), just uninstall updates, and go back to market, accept teh T&C and you will be back using old market again.
This worked for me ONLY after following the steps in OP and:
1. Changing the permissions of both files to rw-r-r
2. Renaming market.apk to Market.apk
3. Renaming updater.apk to Updater.apk
I think you'd need to 'chown root.root' on both files too...

[MOD] Email.apk With Exchange Security Removed *Added new Build*

Some of you may remember this from the Captivate thread.
But here we go again...
Tired of having to type in a password or PIN into your phone just because your Corporate Email account requires it? I know I am.
This modified Email.apk will allow you to bypass the password, and possibly other exchange security policies, simply because, when it evaluates the policy to see if it is active, it always returns that it is. And so, when it checks to see if your PIN is active, it simply thinks it is, and continues to go about it's business as normal. This will NOT add support for remote wipe, or functions that your device simply does not support. Though I might add that later.
I have taken the liberty of modifying the Email.apk from the Rogers Gingerbread Build using the same method as: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=729753
To install do the following:
Code:
adb remount
adb push Email.NoSecurity.apk /system/app/Email.apk
adb reboot
YMMV, I am not responsible if you get fired for circumventing your company's Exchange Policies.
Appreciate my work? Buy Me a Beer:

Help with wiping and/or reinstalling busybox

Hey guys and gals,
I've got a 7.7 on stock ROM rooted using the original root method the day I purchased the tablet. I've been using my tablet happily for over a month now.
Unfortunately, late last night I opened up Google Play and started updating all my apps, including Busybox by stericson. There was a new busybox version out (1.20.1) and I decided to install it using "Smart install." I'm not sure if it tried to install to /system/bin or /system/xbin but after the install I saw the app give me an error message explaining that the install was unsuccessful. Anyways, now a lot of my root-requiring apps including Titanium Backup Pro is not functioning at all. It seems that my BusyBox installation is corrupt.
I tried using BusyBox Pro by stericson to uninstall but the corrupt busybox seems to have prevented a proper uninstall, so it still lingers. I downloaded JadeEyedWolf's root.zip from his pinned "Root" post which includes SU & BusyBox thinking that installing the root.zip from CWM Recovery would over-write the corrupt busybox. After flashing I rebooted the tablet and I still got the same corrupt busybox issues.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks!
Edit: The corrupt busybox causes the Wifi to show Error when I try to turn on the radio. Not that internet is vital in repairing the tablet, but I've worked around it by tethering Bluetooth internet off of my OG HTC Evo 4G. It's strange though - I can peruse websites and view the items in the Google Play Store but it will never actually download, though the "Downloading --- " bar does display.
I had the same problem, stock rom as well. If you check the reviews for Stericson's Busybox on Google Play, the two top ones a few minutes ago both mentioned the same issue.
Trying to root again and reinstalling Superuser didn't help, neither did a factory reset (manually salvaging settings and data was a pain too).
Re-flashing the original rom fixed it, following the guide at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1469635
I switched to JRummy16 Busybox installer and it seems to work.
Surprising that no one else here mentioned the problem ...
Try this fix.
To be more specific: BusyBox installer 8.0 replaces /system/bin/sh and /system/bin/ash binaries. I don't have any idea why would it do that (considering that I specified /system/xbin as an install folder), but this quick fix restores original ash binary (and sh as a symlink to it).
Installer 8.1 and above has this bug fixed.
Had the same problem with busybox and had to re-install the rom. What does this fix do?

Personally I always use /system/xbin, so that some custom kernel (like CWM) could use /system/bin if it wanted to.
BTW, the BusyBox installer bug was fixed in version 8.1, and current version is 8.2, so you should update it anyway. I was wrong to mention "1.20.1" version. Post edited.
Hi guys,
First of all, I want to apologize sincerely for the bug that my application introduced in 8.0. I didn't catch the bug because my device wasn't affected by the bug.. (I always test my app myself before releasing..yet I still miss things due to devices file structure being so different.)
At any rate, the bug was that the application symlinked all applets to Busybox. Normally, this is done if you use smart install and change the settings manually. By default smart install will not overwrite applets that are not already symlinked to Busybox.
This was not a problem with Busybox 1.20.1 but was a problem with my application and how it performed the install.
Again, I am very very sorry that this has occured, as a result I am scouring the web trying to find people with the issue and help them resolve it.
If you have this problem, it can easily be fixed by reflashing your current rom. you do not have to wipe or clear any data. Once this is done, you can download my installer, version 8.1 or greater and upgrade busybox as normal.
Please let me know if you guys have any questions.

I too had the same situation, updated busybox then noticed something was awry when hidebar wouldn't work. My issues go way beyond broken root and WIFI, I've also been getting constant reboots. I was just about to re-install the stock rom until I read about the possible udate.zip fix. I'm very interested in how to apply the zip (I don't have CWM) being that i do extensive customization (with no backup, I know, I know) and I'd hate to re customize everything again. If I can get things right the first thing I'll do is install CWM and perform a nandroid backup.

you don't need CWM, just copy the fix onto external storage card, enter recovery (PWR + Vol. up Buttons) and apply the update from there. just fixed my tablet this way

Thanks for posting this, I'm in love with my 7.7 once again.
Appreciate the response stericson. I had purchased your Pro version but even after I fixed the uninstall failed and it also did not detect superuser permissions even though SU gave a notification that Busybox Pro was granted superuser. All other root-requiring apps work. Had to refund the Pro purchase though
No problem. there seems to be an issue with the application detecting root sometimes, that's why you can still try the install.
I'm looking into this issue, it just started showing up so I am not sure what is going on.

Really appreciate this fix. On the verge of wiping out everything....
But decide to see if its busy box since its the last thing i install before all this happens....
Just to note that uninstall busybox also doesnt solve the issue...
so need to fix.
I had a lot of problems with root permissions not being granted by Superuser app. Recently I have tried SuperSu from the market and uninstalled original Superuser app (important to follow the instructions for the App! ).
My main problem was that ntfssd was not granted root permissions at startup, so I had to start it again manually. With SuperSu it is no problem. Also I use Busybox and successfully updated to the latest binary recently.

Thank you so much for that, I had been driven crazy and had also gone through a factory reset to try and get my device back working, to no avail. Can I ask where you got the ash you're including here? It worked for my Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Plus, on 3.2, but is it a generic enough file that it can be dropped on nearly all Android devices without any issues arising?
I only ask out of curiosity and understanding the system more.
