Is such a thing possible? It would be interesting to see how well it runs on the captivates hardware
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Yeah, someone in the vibrant forum has it running. More than likely it will work on the captivate or could be ported to the captivate pretty easily.
I can confirm that absolutely no modifications are necessary to the Vibrant instructions...
Ubuntu works very well on the Cappy...
Enjoy!

Anyway we will see this on the Captivate? Also, do we have a Captivate developer? Or is everyone on the Vibrant and we are just waiting for someone to port it to captivate?

More than likely if he releases his method for using a vanilla android someone will be able to port it to the captivate. Looks good.

It seems only Koush has the Captivate amongst the well known developers, and he doesn't seem to be spending much time on the Captivate as he also seem to be doing Droid stuff. I (am not well-known - maybe someday ) have been trying to use a merged samsung+vanilla code base myself because I like some of the things from Touchwiz, but that isn't going well because of missing stuff from Samsung. Maybe I should just do vanilla builds too.

I'm just wondering if there are any devs working on this. I know there were a couple working on it, but what happened? Did it get discontinued? Thanks guys
Yes, people are working on it. In the meantime, be thankful for what we do have instead of whining about what we don't. That's the reason for the season.
Yeahh, i'm definitely whining. Sorry for asking questions, maybe my post shoulda gone in the Q&A section.. oh wait.
Well, the title of the thread said it all. I didn't mean to sound like an ass, it's just that we have great devs putting out great work right now, and still people are unhappy. Anyway, yes people are working on it and it has not been discontinued as far as I know.
Just move on to a new phone. That's what I did. Sgs4g will never have CM.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
It will. It just takes time- things have to be done first before CM will magically be officially supported. A working kernel, which is in the works, has to be done first.
It really takes time. No one ever thought that the Droid 2, X (though nightly's) or the Motorola Cliq (worst phone ever built) would see a Cyanogen build. As far as if anyone is working on it though... thats kinda an unknown. Krylon360 had a thread over on rootswiki about it, but there hasn't been a real update on status... he is a busy person with other priorities quite frankly, namely work, something I am sure we can all relate to.
Once the kernel is finished, it will happen. Truth be told, you are not missing much though. I had a Nexus One for a year, and quite frankly, Valhalla is a much more stable rom. Cyanogen's updates slowed down massively (people got jobs), and in comparison, individuals that develop here are for more committed and update much more frequently. The best thing you can do is attempt to learn how to do these things yourself, donate to the individuals that do, or be willing to subject your phone to the most horrendous of builds in order for everyone else to get a better build.
P.S. These 'buy a new phone' comments get really old. That's exactly what a company like Motorola or Samsung would want- for us to buy a new phone to get an upgrade. The Galaxy S 4g is an amazing phone, I personally see no reason to buy any other phone on the market. Android is supposed to be open-source and modified, we can't do that by simply walking away.
Everyone has their own tastes. The N1 has really old hardware compared to sgs4g. Google pushed the GB update to them, but it didn't really make much of a difference. So cyanogen had to make an official for them. Also, when we get CM7, we will like it more than usual because people who get things all the time don't appreciate. We waited so long, that it will be beautiful.
So the CM7 for Samsung Galaxy SII doesn't work on the Epic 4g Touch?
I'll keep saying this. You want a dev to work on something, show him some appreciation by sending him a few bucks so he can get a coffee for all those hours spent coding. Trust me, I've gotten donations before and it's a great motivator to get stuff out to people
Personally I'm glad there's no cm7 for the sgs4g. I don't like it and it seems like whenever cm7 hits a phone everyone stops making cool roms and starts basing everything off it. If we had cm7 we might of never got octane!

I feel the frustration that the devs have to put up with in figuring out what Samsung will not tell us. They instead announce they will not support existing Galaxy S phones because there is not enough memory to run touch wiz and ICS. Well, my opinion to that is, provide an API to existing proprietary drivers so the code can be tailored accordingly.
Releasing the source is a plus, but the hidden stuff is what stalls development.

I loved my mytouch 4g. Was an awesome phone with TONs of options.
Shattered it... had to use a SGS4G... what a POS compared to the MT4G.
Moved on to a N1 and now enjoying some ICS and CM. Basically use the SGS4G as a nanny can / mini webserver.

OK I'm curious, your always bashing the sgs4g, why? Did it rob you or something!? You seem to have a major issue with it and I really don't see why. Because honestly its a damn good phone. Not having the most dev support doesn't change that, mine was an excellent android device completely stock.

Technically, the kernel should work fine. Its the device tree that needs love.
Know what I'm talking about? Check out DRockstar's cm7 bml kernel thread for sources in the epic 4g forum. They have cm7 running on ext4.
I'm no android expert, just kick ass with the kernel... But slowly I'm picking up on stuff.
Check out the other repositories on my github page and pm me if you know how to help.

Hi,
I wonder if the fancy rotation animation from 1.5 could be ported to Skyrocket.
I'm sure a lot of people would appreciate it!
I know that Samsung has incorporated this feature onto the Galaxy Note, but is there anyway to get it this feature onto the Skyrocket? Either port it from 1.5 Cupcake or port it from the Note?
Would really love this feature to show off to my friends!
Its ics screen rotation effect. Would be great to port it from cm9 once will be attended here.

I've seen this effect on the Galaxy S II before on youtube. There is a thread on xda explaining how to do it.
However, I went ahead and tried it without success. I soft-bricked my beloved skyrocket. I managed to get my phone running again though.
I wonder if it was a mistake on my part or it just doesn't work at all.
Would anybody want to try it? :O

I asked sean (creator of sky ics) if he could do it, he said is was easy he just needs to find the right files I guess

Oh that's really awesome! All my buds with iphones keep bugging me about looks. They say "Oh, your phone's faster, but it's ugly."
HA, what do they know. Skyrocket is an amazing piece of tech produced by Samsung boasting an amazing piece of software (Besides touchwiz).
Looking forward to sean posting a tut on how to get the animation! Any ETA? LOL
Can we use it on our phone? I saw it in the front page and it said it works for the vibrant, but does that mean we can use it?

NO.
no and let me elaborate further
When you want to go to the restroom do you go into the girls restroom(assuming your a guy) just because both restroom's look alike?
Nope! Because the sign says girls and you're a guy
Like that the Vibrant may look like our magnificent SGS4G but is different in many ways, if you flash(you can't because their ICS slim updater script checks first to see if you have vibrant or not)you will brick.
sent from T959V running Vibrant miUI port (ironic) lol
Thanks for the elaboration,I was just so tempted at the idea of ics on my phone

Didn't we have a *nix loader available for us a year or two ago? Though I remembered seeing posts on that, but the links were dead by the time I decided to kill my phone.
Keep an eye on this.
THIS
Ubuntu stated that the OS works better on multi-core devices. We can still try to see if it works...
http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/android
Seeing what it did to some of the nexus 4 peoples phone I think it's a crap shot and very risky. There is a git that just got his nexus two days ago and already bricked out from flashing a alpha build of Ubuntu mobile.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah I messed around with it yesterday on my galaxy nexus. It's still in the very beginning of alpha stages in my opinion.
But there were allot of people having trouble going back to android afterwards on the galaxy nexus forums but no bricks. It's a cool idea but I think it needs some time to mature like android did.

Since Ubuntu is using CM as source I'd say it's possible. They seem to be optimizing it towards duel core(possibly quad by the time it's fully released) devices though. So why it should be portable to this phone the experience may be less the stellar. Think of running a new PC game on a three year old PC and you get the idea.

I hear it builds just like CM. A guy is building it for the Rocket as we speak. Or trying to. It's still so early in the development phase that even getting it to boot will be a challenge in and of itself. But you know the deal. You build it I'll log it. I'll have to look into what package would be needed to log it. lol

since they use cm as a base I don't see why it wouldn't since Erik got cm10.1 to work on this device.

I saw that on the galaxy nexus forums today I never looked at your link. oops

The biggest hurdle from what I seen posted is the transition of VM between android and Ubuntu. For the most part I think the issues with building and actually getting it to boot is the different Vm the two OS's use.
I wanna post the link just to say that I didn't see it on this thread twice already but here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Porting
. It looks intricate but it's not really different from porting a new rom . I can't wait to tinker with this...
Looks like somebody ported it the the original galaxy s

Although it looks pretty cool, the only thing I use Ubuntu for is for Eclipse and I wouldn't program Java in a phone. If it's on a Nexus 7 (other tablets too) then OK, but why would anyone want Ubuntu on their phones? Serious, not hating.
Being able to run both Ubuntu apps and Android would be fun.
