Allshare + Windows Home Server + MKV files - Captivate General

I have Rock Player installed, and I can see my Windows Home Server on the phone. I have lots of video on there, some in AVI and some in MKV. AllShare doesn't recognize the MKV files, only AVI files. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think there is anything you can do. AllShare won't play WTV or DVR-MS either and these are Native recordings on Windows Media Center.
Until Samsung publishes some specs we won't know what is supported.
The only solution i have see is to find a DLNA server software package that can transcode on the fly. There are 30 or so different ones, and some are free but i have not ventured down this path yet.

Try the vlc streamer app from the market, plus vlc player on your pc. Works beautifuly once you have everything configured right.
This transcodes on the fly, so you can play pretty much anything.

Thanks alphadog. I'll look into DLNA software for my server.

That does sound promising, but I don't always have my laptop turned on in order to play the media. That is the appeal to AllShare was. I could stream music or a movie with out having to use my laptop.

Will VLC Stream and Convert work for you? It's able to connect to VLC running on a PC and tell it to stream and trasncode on the fly to the Captivate.

I guess if I install it on the server itself, it should work. Not sure why I didn't think about that when jsmith recommended it.

I think I know why it isn't working. I using my home server mostly as a file share and a way to do automatic backups of my laptops. So there are no codecs or software installed on the server to play the files. I bet if I install vlc and the cccp codec pack it will work. And if not, I can try the vlc streaming app.

I wish you luck, but I don't think installing codecs on the server will affect what the phone plays. My machine plays every file under the sun, but the phone will only play certain file types - that is why something needs to transcode on the server to a format the phone will understand.
VLC or some DLNA server that will do this on the server side is a good way to go.
But I don't want to discourage you - let us know how your tests go.

Sorry for my message earlier echoing the poster above me. didn't see it show up as I was preparing mine. Vlc doesn't require additional codecs to be installed. So it should work as long as you are able to install onto your server.

Yeah, just install vlc on your server, and as long as you have everything configured properly you should be fine.

Thanks everyone. Hopefully this weekend I will get a minute to look into this more and try it out. I will be sure to let you all know how it works out for me.

[Q] Streaming Media from UPnP Server

I have a 4 TB NAS appliances on our home network loaded with all our family's media. This works great for our other networked devices (blu-ray players, wii, 360, etc) and using the builf in file manager on the G I can map to the NAS. Problem comes whenever it hits some xvid/divx/mpg video files, it just won't play.
Any recommendation of an app that can do media from a network server?
There is a dlna app that comes with the droid x that I don't believe is tied into the framework. I will see if I can link the files for it.
Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk
Getting a decent uPnP client is on my list of ToDo's - I'm hoping that we can port the Archos video player over, just for that purpose.
Found a link to the APK, but I haven't tried it yet...
http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/droid-discussions/2818-droid-x-dlna-app.html
<edit> Parse Error: There is a problem parsing this package. when trying to install it via Root Explorer.
<edit2>Copied the link wrong which caused the parse error, APK installs correctly and the app runs fine as a DLNA server. ( I didn't verify connectivity), but it force-closes if you select "Network Settings Set up Wireless Access Points" possibly due to the TnT version of Settings?
either way, it makes your gTablet a server, not a client so you won't be browsing your NAS with this APK...
ah well, looks like we might be waiting for kernel source or a custom compiled kernel to get streaming video.

I found an app called UPnPlay in the market that is working really well for me. If you are familiar with the Archos media player this has very similar capability. If you haven't done the market fix you probably won't find it though.
I was just watching a movie streaming from my Windows home server on my G tablet. Played nice.. Took it a few minutes to initially find my server but it did.

Nice tip used it and rockplayer worked perfect
This is a nice app - tried it and it found my media player (PS3MediaServer) fairly quickly. It did crash once, but it's certainly better than nothing.
It plays audio and photos well, but video seems a bit choppy on my setup so far. I have all different types of containers / codecs so I might have to find the sweet spot - Xvid / MP3 / AVI's seem to play best.
Thanks for the find!
No mkv support, but otherwise looks good
Heck, this thing even found our DirecTV HD DVR as well as the uPnP NAS!

I think it's limited by the video player - and MKV support on the GTab is very limited, unfortunately.
Fantastic Find! Thanks Sprdtyf350-
Nice!
This finds my MythTV server. I am able to play .wmv videos on the MythTV server, with the default player. But it is unable to play the MythTV recordings of OTA digital (HDTV). These are a form of mpeg-2 video, similar to what a standard DVD is. If we can find a player that can play DVD files, then I think it will play MythTV recordings too.
ORB LIVE is the answer.
Orb is the Answer to this... if we can make it work.... I use Orblive on my EVO and it works amazingly. I can stream from anywhere and it decodes most files. It runs over Wifi, 3g and if I am on the same network as my server, it goes direct without hitting the Internet. I works GREAT.
But unfortunately, it doesnt work right on my GTAB. This could be specific to my device, but it cannot stream the files. This sucks because this is one of my main uses for buying this device. With Flash fixed, I can stream through the internet via the orb.com webpage. But the App works much better. If anyone that understands the codecs of these things can figure out how to make the orblive app work, it would be amazing.
To the G tablet users using UPnPlay, how do divx files do for seeking/searching? I'm using UPnPlay on my Evo with both Rockplayer and Vplayer and neither searches or seeks particulary well..... or at all. If the video file plays with Androids native video player, it seeks just fine.
I don't want to be forced to always begin playback and the start of the video and not be able to resume where I left off if I have to leave the player/app.

UPNP/DLNA playback with seeking/searching?

I use upnplay with rockplayer and have found it to be hit or miss depending on the file. Some work really well, others not at all. My Xvid files seem to work pretty well, I tried an MKV and it was ok. I have a bunch of MP4 files that don't seek at all. I haven't really looked into it all that much yet.
Until something like the player in my little Archos5 comes around this is probably best we have for now.

I actually have 3. Tversity, PS3 media server, and Orb. I don't actually turn on the media server feature for Orb, but I did try it with Upnplay, but that was the worst of all 3. Both Tversity and PS3 media server work about the same, but I get thumbnail previews with PS3 media server.
And before anyone asks why I have both Tversity and PS3 media server installed and running, I use the PS3 media server for...... drumroll..... the PS3, and the Tversity is for an old Dlink media player my son watches that doesn't work with the PS3 media server.

I'm running Serviio on WinXP.
For me, the server won't start on boot, and shows a pop up message "server not running". Probably because Java hasn't loaded yet.
Use a .bat file located in the bin folder to start it.
The console runs independent of server.
If you decide to try it, be patient during install. It appears to hang but it's loading Java 6 from the internet.

Best App (Currently) for streaming locally stored pc videos to android devices

Hey everyone-
I've been doing a bunch of searching lately for an easy-to-use and convenient application for streaming videos from my pc to android device (like airplay for the iphone). And I can't seem to find one specific app that makes it simple and easy, they all seem to be a pain in the ass. I know this question has been asked before, but not for a couple months, so what in your opinion is the best application and/or method for streaming content from a pc to an android device? Thanks in advance for any help.

If you have your PC setup with the dnla server software, this place has a beta dnla client for Andoid. I saw the write up on EuroDroid.com.
http://www.skifta.com/
I tried using the Playon streaming with the mobile link. It worked ok...but I do want a nice streaming option.
VLC Remote
Doesn't VLC Remote just control whats playing on your desktop? I think the OP is looking for something to stream movies to his handset.
That aside, I love VLC Remote.
Yes, I'm looking to stream videos from my pc's hdd to my phone, in an easy way (i.e. in the same way that airvideo for the iphone does).

And i don't have a dlna server on my pc, it's just an external hdd connected to my pc.
I use File Expert as a file manager/explorer and I mapped my computer under it's network tab, then when I select a video I use VPlayer to play it in. Works perfectly!
Every other way I tried before this required the video to download before watching, but this way I can stream any video directly.
You will need to setup your video/movies/etc folders on PC to be shared with proper permissions. Easiest to just share the whole external HDD.

Thanks for the suggestion, I appreciate it.
Let me put it this way, is there anything as stupid simple as audiogalaxy for android that will do the same thing for music?
I'd definitely give RockPlayer a go. It has both hardware and software decoding and it works with TVersity!
Same way, through the file explorer. You just need to share your music on pc and connect to it.
My Desire HD came with DNLA client software and when I go into the music program I can stream in there directly from my WMP library, that's probably the easiest way but that would vary with different phones.
I use VLC Stream & Convert, though it is somewhat cumbersome to set up...
I ended up using windows task scheduler and a lot of program commands to start it with my computer all stealthy
Yeah, I've got windows media player set-up correctly with all the proper permissions and such. All of my media files are showing up, i.e. music, videos, etc, and all of my music plays fine as well. But, the one thing that won't play are ANY of my videos, which are mostly xvid-encoded .avi files, which I'm not sure skifta supports (as it uses the dlna classification). Any suggestions?
If you have a windows PC you can easily setup windows media player to stream via dlna. Just google "windows media player dlna". If you are on mac or linux, just substitute for OSX or your linux distro and the word dlna for a bunch of options. Once it's up and going you can use the dlna app mentioned earlier or if you are lucky enough to have a SGS like me, you can use Samsung All Share to stream. I have used this since I got my phone and it's working like a charm!

try diceplayer
Rock/Mobo/Vital/vPlayer can not use hw decoder when playing file that isn't supported by system like MKV(+DTS/FLAC).
Diceplayer can play MKV/M2TS files using HW Decoder.so
diceplayer use almost same power as stock player. sw codec base player need more power.
Xperia Play have QSD8255. it can play 720p High level 3.1~4.1
I had issues with RockPlayer on my XP, can't remember if I tried MoboPlayer.

Android's media playing capabilities definitely seems to be weaker than that of iPhone and Windows IMHO.

you dont need a DNLA server such as ps3media center or tversity to stream your media.
Install the cifs/tuns modules (or flash my system.img with it all built in) and use cifs manager to map your pc's network drives to your sdcard.
You can now stream video, pictures and audio over your wifi network without any extra software running on your PC.
and if you wanna get tricky you can run a vpn to your pc and connect to it and stream music while away from your house ;D

Thanks for the recommendation on arcMedia. It worked flawlessly with .avi, .div, .divx, .srt subtitles in spanish failed with accented letters and non-english characters but japanese subtitles worked perfect, and they look really sharp.
Even though MoboPlayer was recommended by a lot of people and someone reviewed it (I searched for that thread but I couldn't find it again), .divx wasn't recognized as a video file, .div closed after a split second and .avi's audio was out of synch like hell. I didn't even check if subtitles were supported.

don't know about vpn but get "File Expert" from the market and you can map network drives (including NAS drives, i.e. PC can be off) and stream video via wifi (dice player or other players supporting your formats will be needed, otherwise your are limited to MP4 format) - I mapped my NAS device using internal IP address - don't know how secure it would be if you enable external web access to it through external IP and not sure if it would work as an FTP or something for downloading only not streaming possibly.
I use upnplay for streaming over a network in conjunction with moboplayer works great (probably the 2 best free apps iv ever come across).
Im interested in setting up a vpn to access my content whilst out and about or through someone elses wifi. Might have to invest in a sling box

I use Wyse PocketCloud from the Market to access two machines at work - one via remote desktop to take control of it, one with UltraVNC to share with other people on it. But if it's file sharing not just using your PCs' desktops - one of the guys here uses remote desktop to put files he needs into the Dropbox remotely, then picks them up in the Dropbox on his mobile. I don't use Dropbox yet - want to try setting up external access to the network files first to see how they work in File Expert if at all. Maybe TUN/CIFS modules are better for that but I haven't tried them out either.
Mobo Player the best!
and for audio FYI, i'd go for PowerAMP!
I'm using rock player, no issue for me so far.

Only downside is it doesnt supporr subtitles.
It's not great but it does the job.

Any idea where? Windows7 sharing options are a pain in the ass!
So, PS3 Media Server and MedaHouse app work fine for Music and Video Streaming. But Reconverting doesn't work... Trying 840x480 Videos works fine. but 1920x1080 isn't streaming well. Seeing 1 picture for 3 seconds, some sound noises and then maybe a next picture.

- Go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings
- Under Public - Media streaming you will find "Choose media streaming options", click on that.
- From there you will see "Show devices on:" choose All networks.
- If your device isnt listed there by name, then it must be marked as an "Unknown Device" and is Blocked on the right, Allow them one by one and see if it shows up on your device.
But i have some bad news, when I tested that myself and doing this makes it show just fine using my Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 to play Music or Videos on my machine, but not Galaxy Note 10.1 for some reason!

But i have some bad news, when I tested that myself and doing this makes it show just fine using my Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 to play Music or Videos on my machine, but not Galaxy Note 10.1 for some reason!

Tzzzzzz Seems like Samsung ****ed up! Lets hope they bring JB Update soon!
it works!
No Idea why! But i startet up Media Player on my Laptop today and then used media house for remote control! don't ask me why but I also startet up normal media player and pressed "find near" it found the laptop and worked!!!
gotta test if it works on my normal pc too...
Edit: NO it doesn't ! But only the Music library seems broken! Pictures and Videos do work!
Installed Twonky 7 now... that seems to work!
Oh well. i've tested a few DLNA/UPnP Apps on my tablet.
Twonky Beam (outdated) and BubbleUPnP Are my favorite atm. Mainly because they support DMR so you can play stuff from any other DNLA device ON the Tablet! Twonky beam is better because you can play music from Tablet to computer and also at the same tame from phone to the tablet!
If you try that with BubbleUPnP it stops the laptop playing from the Tablet!
But on the other hand If you use Twonky Beam to stream Youtube Videos to the Laptop you can't minimize it! BubbleUPnP works fine minized
BubbleUPnP also has a Player control on the Lockscreen and in the notificaton Menue. And it's easier to use chose server/Device and Library.

I really don't understand whats the problem...my galaxy 10.1 finds and plays all my music that is shared over the network (either from desktop pc, laptops or other devices connected to wifi. Stock music player works flawlesly and finds all music if i choose nearby devices. Another option is allshare that finds and plays media from computers, wd tv live hub and other phones/tablets. So either I don't understand what the problem is, or you are doing something wrong. I can even get music to note from my network server over wifi and then stream it to my dlna sony hifi. It works flawlessly. My only complaint is that apparently dlna doesn't support mp3 tags so you can't filter music by artists, albums, ...
qloud player
I currently using mediatomb for mp3. Note 2 stock player can connect to it. As for movie Qloud also a good choice. easy and play fast. also can play using 3G.
It was a Problem with Windows 7 Media server!
Btw, Using Synology DSaudio ... You need a Synology NAS as Source but you can stream it to any DLNA player. Has a nice interface.
