Everyone, If you rooted your DroidX and removed CityID and/or GTalk and found out you can no longer download from the Android Market, heres what I did to fix it.
I searched and searched and found others who provided the stock, untainted .apk files for gtalk and cityId. I saved to pc, transfered to my SD card, then used the file manager to navigate and open them. I selected the manage option and selected " INSTALL "
Once done, I cleared the cash of the Market app, ran it and it worked!!!
I emediatly re-downloaded all my old apps bith free and paid. No problems.
Now I reset my phone to defaults first and then rooted it. I dont see why you would have to do that and i dont see a problem trying it if you phone is not rooted but thats up to you.
I discovered this fix when after the Market issue, i tried to install the leaked Froyo installer ZIP and kept getting an error refering to CityID.
Bassically it was saying it was checkeing for an update and files related to CityID and since mine where missing, it wouldnt install.
I thought that maybe this was also to blame for the Market download issue. Sure enough my inkling was right and now my phone is fixed.
FYI, if yo dont have CityID and/or GTalk installed, then the Froyo update wont install. Leaked or otherwise that I know of.
So if you had my problem, gve it a try. If for some reason you android market doesnt download, try replacing or re-installing the .apk files I attached and see if it fixes it.
Post here if you discover anything or need help.
Im not a programmer, just a PC Tech, so if things go wrong, sorry, I dint make you do it.
These attached files are for the DROID X.
WHy Google hasnt said anything about this is beyond me, but im sure they have known all along.
Cheers Android world, and Google, your welcome, i just may have saved you mucho customers. Enjoy.

Is it possible to just extract and install Only the Google Market app from the gapps-mdpi-20100816-signed zip file. It does not seem likely to work but I thought I would ask anyway.
It is a real bummer trying to buy apps from developers when you have no access to the apk files. Not to mention the apps I already purchased and now I have to figure out how to contact the dev and get a copy. Should have backed up my individual apps, lesson learned.
Yea I just tried installing Vending.apk and MarketUpdate and they do not work. The market app shows up but fails to launch. This is a serious flaw with this rom unless I am missing something. How is every one putting apps on their phone? For example Evernote or any of the other apps that are only accessible via the market?

I removed the apps I didn't want from the zip and then installed via clockwork.

Thanks for the reply and it was a good idea, unfortunately it did not work for me. I have no idea why. I finally resorted to installing the whole gapps package and that worked. It would be nice to get this figured out.
When I removed various apps from the zip and re-zipped the recovery did not seem to want to install it properly. As a test to see if it was installing I added maps in addition to the market and niether were installed on reboot. I may reflash and try again, It bothers me to have those extra apps hanging around. I think it may be important to have the firstrun stuff (OnetimeInitilizer) on there but I am not sure.
Any more ideas?

Install the gapps package, then remove the apps you don't want via adb. After removing them, clear dalvik cache and that will remove the dex files no longer in use and free up the space.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=735255 explains how to remove with adb, if you need the info.
ahh yes, that method works good thanks. I quess wiping the dalvik cache takes the place of the "pm uninstall *.apk /data/system/packages.xml" on 2.2 devices.
I know that there are tons of threads about this but none of them have helped. My market just will not work. It shows it downloading, then displays the message "Download failed" for a split second and disappears.
I have an HTC Desire (BravoC/CDMA) with the latest version of CyanogenMod 7 Nightly and ClockworkMod 2.5.0.9 for recovery. I also have Firerat's Custom MTD Partition. Details and links to all these can be found in my signature.
I feel like I've tried everything. Uninstall updates, Installed latest GApps, Installed old versions of GApps, Installed leaked versions of Gapps, cleared cache, formatted device.
This has been happening since the new market website was released. It really sucks, I can't update any apps or download any new apps.
If anyone can offer any help or suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you
Try removing SD card then try again. I had the same problem with my galaxy s I removed SD card backup on PC then I formatted it put it back in and market works perfect, don't ask me why but this worked for me

a little weird thing i noticed is,if i have checked the box that allows applications to be download to the external(Apps2sd) whatever i try to download, will be resulted with Unsuccessful. When i unchecked it, my downloads were successful.
See if you have it checked.
I discovered that it was a problem with the CSC file. I had exactly the same issue with a 'mixed up' firmware. Download would not work at all from the market. Anyhow, I flashed the phone (galaxy s) with a different CSC file and the market started downloading.
the only thing I had changed was that file.
So u may want to consider that Hope this helps.
I think there is also a possibility of going to applications --> market, and then stop & clear data.
same situation here...
re-flash the rom and market won't download anything.
But it's strange that I can install apps from web market.
i know i'm at the wrong thread but could somebody help me pls with sgs gingerbread im stuck at on command where it is saying that busybox is not a valid command and thats its not recognized
Thanks for all the suggestions guys, after some time I have discovered what was causing the market issue. It was the Firerat Custom MTD Partition Mod the whole time. Apparently the new version of the market deals with downloads a little differently now and doesn't get along with Firerat's mod.
So now the waiting game begins for a new update from Firerat.
Hi,
NOt a solution, but I found a workaround for this issue on my phone.
I am using Hyperdroid GBX V8 on my HTC HD2 now. From last 2 days I was struggling with this problem. I tried all solutions I found with google. Clearning everything and Reflashing, clearing the market and caches for other apps, reflashing, unmount/mount SDCARD and so on, smaller bigger recovery partition, without EXT3/4 partition.
Still the problem exist on the phone. But I found a workaround. Logon to market.android.com using your google id and password, select the app you want to install and click install. if your phone is up and live, it will be installed in a few seconds.
In other words, pull doesnt work, but push works .
Thanks.
Anil
For some reason the Market did not download apps and updates anymore. All downloads simply failed ending up in paused downloads. I figured maybe a Market downgrade would fix this so I uninstalled the Market with Titanium Backup. After that I put Vending.apk (version 2.3.4) in /system/apps but for some reason the Market does not start. It doesn't show up in the app drawer either and simply clicking on vending.apk does nothing. Am I maybe missing a step here??
Maybe try with the one linked in the 2nd post on this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=896312
That is what I used since my chinese stock rom did not include a real Market.
Just put the zip on the root directory of your SD card and install it from the regular recovery (power ON + volume down).
Hope it works for you.
Both the stock recovery and clockworkmod report an error in the zip file. It's in the root of the sd card. It opens fine on the pc.
*edit*
It seems that this update.zip is specifically made for the ME525.
Out of despair I decided to flash another rom (Pays 5.1). But to my surprise the problem remains! This is horrible because now I can't reinstall most of my apps. Simple things like clearing the market cache has no effect. Why doesn't the Market work as it should?
*edit*
Also tried to download apps over the mobile network but same result. Seems the ISP isn't the problem.
Have you done all the wipe setp?
Check if Data Saver is enabled.
Well after having changed nothing at all the downloads started working normally again. After doing some more online research I noticed more people had similar problems, probably due to problems with google's servers. At least it wasn't my phone although it made me flash a new Rom resulting in a now undowngradable and warranty void phone. Oh well at least it works again. Nevertheless thanks for all the suggestions!

Hey guys and gals I've been fighting with this issue for a while and can't seem to find a way to fix it. I'm running the newest nightly for CM12 via safestrap and I've done a complete wipe and fresh install and I still can't install facebook. Tried clearing the data and cache from the google apps that were recommended via other threads.
This morning I did an entire wipe, installed stock, rooted, installed Facebook successfully, then installed Safestrap, made a new slot, installed CM, and facebook fails on install. Tried installing via Playstore as well as manually with the APK and both fail basically the same way though when doing the APK it doesn't give the 504 error.
So I'm hoping someone out there has another idea of something to try, in the interim I've been running Facebook lite, which works but notifications are unstable for me. It would be easier if I could run the normal app but it's been fighting me at every turn.
Thanks
Luke
Did you try pasting the .APK directly in /data/app and setting appropriate permissions?
Alright I figured I'd come back to this since I did end up finding a solution. I didn't try pasting the APK direct since I had read of some issues with guys doing that and having to wipe the device and I didn't want to have to do that. So I ended up using Titanium backup to backup the copy from the stock rom install that was working, and then restore it into the CM12 install and it worked. Wouldn't update via Play Store but it did work to get a functional install.
So if other guys find this thread down the road, this might be a way to make it work.
Take care!
Luke
I don't know why it wasn't working when you tried to install the apk, but sometimes happened to me something similar. I wasn't able to install any app from the PS, it always trow me an error, I don't remember the exact number, but if it wasn't 504, is really close. The only workaround was to delete my Google account and format data, and when it turned on I skipped the Google first startup wizard and went straight to the play store, and when it prompted to log on, I did and worked flawless. Glad to know that you already fixed it, but this workaround may help someone else
