I will not do anything with this, or publish how. But you can be assured the "warez" guys from that one site will figure this out within a day or so as well...
As most of you will know I am a software developer by trade, with some commercial offerings from my company.
And then there was Marketplace. For commercial devs, something nice to have. But if you have followed the news, the piracy protection for commercial developers is not much to speak of. See this document http://download.microsoft.com/downl...tplace for Mobile Anti-Piracy White Paper.pdf.
I will refrain from quoting the obvious mistakes in this document, if you give this thing a read, you will notice them soon enough. What it all comes down to is that there is no copy protection, not even at the advanced level, at least if they implement it in the way I interpret from reading that document.
So today I started up Marketplace and it worked. Hurrah. The current level of protection is making sure the CAB files are deleted upon install - which is obviously not a way to protect anything - but even this, I thought, should easily be circumventable.
Now, because I wanted to see how fast it could be done, I went with a hunch instead of doing any investigation. And that hunch worked like charm. It took me less than five minutes to circumvent this "protection", and get the ability to save the CABs the MarketPlace app downloads to a different folder. As the CAB file is the same for every downloader, you could just give this CAB you payed for out to all your friends.
Obviously I will not disclose the method, because that would be working against other commercial developers, and ultimately myself. It's just to let you know how ridiculously easy it is, and to give fair warning to those looking to sell apps on the Marketplace.
So, the moral of the story is... WTF MICROSOFT?
I know firsthand there is no such thing as perfect copy protection, but this is just plain ridiculous.
What we really need is for apps to be able to use our own copy protection schemes... you know, like the good web-based app stores out there.
EDIT: l3v5y has also succeeded in doing something similar, and it seems the WMPowerUser admin also found another easy way to do it... Yay, and it ain't even out yet!
Not even 12 hours after launch...that's pretty quick
Oh noes.... that's not good!
Imagine Microsoft reads this and decides to offset tomorrow's Marketplace launch...
Or even worse, Microsoft launches the Marketplace but developers decide not to submit their apps because they're concerned that their apps get pirated.
Thats what happens when devices aren't locked down.
That sounds bad, but it's really no different to how things are today. Perhaps there are some apps that have more security than either nothing or a serial key, but none that I use have anything more sophisticated.
Even as a developer myself, I'd easily take this over some DRMfest.
So, if I'm reading this correctly, when you buy something from marketplace it's not tied into your username with a password like most apps? Instead, you just buy it and it installs the app, but doesn't give you a cab? Yeah, I don't think it's that hard to work around that and get a cab for yourself. Some of the cheaper apps at Handango are like that. Can you re-download an app onto a new device or if you have to hard reset, and is it free or do you need to buy download protection like form Handango?
Good, copy protection pisses me off, all it does is piss of the genuine users. We have to deal with codes and activation to be legit, while people getting it free, just click here and there, copy a code here and huzah.
Copy protection doesnt work, someone will always find a way around it. Unless its linked to a windows live profile/xbox live profile. Which I can see probably happening when they bring out Zune on mobile phones, which sounds like it might be sooner rather than later!
I did something like this earlier... MS haven't quite got security done yet, though my guess is the iPhone is no better...
I'm really surprised by the lack of any drm; what's the point of signing in w/ one's Windows Live account? The easiest thing to do is to associate valid applications w/ one's Window's Live account. That's what itunes does for music at least (I don't know about apps as I don't have an iphone/ipod touch). Of course, what would happen is that an internet connection of some form is needed when the application is first installed, which could become inconvenient.
The truth of the matter is that the percentage or ratio of people who would bother to do this is pretty small. Most WinMo usersbarely even know how to setup e-mail not to mention install a cab file.
Most of the people in this forum already know how and where to get cracked apps or warez if they wanted too. I don't see this so called "flaw" as being an issue to MS or developers.
Must admit that I find it a bit worrying that your not able to make a backup of the applications you buy by taking a copy of the cab file somewhere safe.
After having sent back 4 HTC phones (two different models) in the last 10 months, and having an SD die on me I'd really like to know that I have a backup of anything I've paid for.
Can anyone confirm if its possible to reinstall something you've paid for through the Marketplace app if it gets removed from your phone, or you get another phone? ie if you log into Marketplace with the same Lice ID does it show apps that you've bought but which aren't on the phone your connected with?
If I look at an app that I have installed through Marketplace there is no install button anymore and Marketplace tells me that it is installed... so no obvious way to get the application back...
Not enough free apps on the UK store for me to mess about with really (have installed Shazam trial but don't want to risk uninstaling it just to see what happens).

looks like it keeps track of all apps you purchased.
ow well, I guess it's a matter of time when there will be sites that point to all the cabs available on upload sites and stuff. Just like those sites exists for iphone/ipod (appulo.us for example)
I guess that's what happens when people see that there a lot of apps available on other country stores..
what do you think...

Hi dicemaster,
How did you try this? Uninstalling and reinstalling on the same phone or another phone? Or the same phone after a hard reboot / content erase?
I'm just interested to know from what state you can get back to your purchased applicationsand whether is purely your windows live id that connects you to your purchases or if there is some device specific stuff checked as well.
Cheers,
FM
Is there anything to stop Software Authors implementing (or continuing to use) their normal Serial number protection systems?
Looking at the Market Place, there are obviously some of the Big Names we all know and love, and I don't see why they would remove protection systems they have in place already, unless it was a MarketPlace requirement.
Personally, I can't say I'm at all impressed with the MarketPlace implementation - it heralds back to the early days of PocketPC. Maybe they're going for lowest common denominator hardware support, but frankly even the relatively poor Android marketplace on Hero is massively better. And the Appstore even more so. And I think Cydia tops most of them!
Let's hope that the MarketPlace at least drives prices down.

I am assuming it's more difficult then just going to \Windows\AppMgr\Install folder while the installer is running and copy the CAB file to another location. This is how I get the CAB files from PC only installers.
I personally use SKTracker a lot. I take a snapshot before, and then during the install and see what has changed. That generally tells me right where any install files/CABs are that I need to grab.

Microsoft does not support your own serial systems. There is no information you can compare runtime vs purchases either, so you can't roll your own. Well ok, you DO actually have device ID information you could use, but that way purchasers can only run the application on the phone they actually bought it on. It is not clear how 're-download' information will be transmitted. If that also transmits a device id, then it is possible to roll your own, though it would be pretty nasty.

If you go to C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync on your PC, you'll probably find an archive of many things that you installed over active sync.
SK Tools is a good way to re-pack any installed programs into cabs. I would guess that it works with programs from Market Place.

Hey I was wondering if anyone knew or a Ventrilo program for android (HTC Incredible)
I heard of Centrilo for WinMO, but tbh could never get it to work, is there a Vent based program for our phones?
Thanks in advance

So i found this and I was wondering if anyone knows anyone who could help them, I would LOVE to see this app fully working on a android based phone...

Why should he edit the URL? Are you using Chrome? I've noticed it likes to fail on forums and when the forum shortens URLs and puts the "..." in place of the text it has taken out, chrome will think the ... is part of the actual URL.
That along with a few other problems Chrome had given me, has made me switch back to Firefox.
Anyways, here's the link.
Apparently the company is having problems finding a Android/Java developer.
It was posted in March, and there had been one reply by someone interested. So I'm not sure if someone has taken this project on or not.
Anyone know anymore of a Ventrilo app coming?

He fixed the link (see edit), but I think the link issue may have been fixed in the latest Chrome (if it supports WebM it should work, but I am stuck using Firefox myself for various reasons even though it still has memory link issues, esp. with certain plugins =p).
contagous, as far as Ventrilo/TeamSpeak/etc, what cody said still stands. Because they choose to stay closed-source there isn't even a way for Android developers to "take a whack at it". Part of the issue is that some of the codex they use are copyrighted themselves, but it's mostly an issue of them being closed-source. I know how cool it'd be to be in a game and have your buddies on a on your phone (either via speakerphone or even better, a bluetooth headset), but based on what I know we won't see it soon.

lol thanks, i was wondering if the linux version that was open source, someone would create something with that.
oh and this has nothing to do with games , i speak to my family on vent a lot, because we can all be in the same place and chat. See they are all back in UK, and im in Seattle WA
Anyways thanks, and maybe one day
Make them get Skype then =p, I believe you can do voice conferences in there (I have the hardest time getting my friends to install Skype, they always say "Well not a lot of people I know use it", to which I often reply, "That's the problem! Just download it and get the ball rolling!" and then bang my head up against a solid object for a few minutes =p.
Everyone has Skype, Skype is good but everyone all in one place without push to talk to crazy, BUT BUT check this out

They did it, and it works amazing, its still only in alpha testing but its awsome
they have a test version to download works fairly well too its a bit loud on the receiving side but for the most part good.

Very nice, I had not come across this alternative but it seems to have a really good flow going (I like that they support Android 1.5 - 2.2 already). I am going to setup a VMWare install tonight on my 8GB flashdrive that will be my Android workstation, I'll lend these guys any help I can.

Layout is incomplete, ill take care of that later. Im mostly interested in clarity and accuracy of information.
i love the name to start it off!
I think the overall post is very good. I couldn't test much of it because I have a mac.
One thing I would suggest is once they get launcher pro, to get something like retro clock or a clock widget since I couldn't find one within the widget system using launcher pro.
haha thanks mad, i needed something that would catch people's attention and hopefully get to them b4 they started posting questions that have already been answered.

Thank you, i'll add that info now.
I still need more people to read through this.
Should i suggest that you should provide .doc format too?
Not a lot of ppl have 2007+ MS word.
I have to say this guide is wonderful.
We should start a wiki or something.
Thanks :]
there's a free Word 2003 plugin that lets you read .docx files, and Google Docs can read 'em too.
The only thing I have an issue with is the whole Cult of the Task Killer thing, as I'm an Apostle of Android Memory Management and find it offensive.
But seriously, might want to put some of the cons of Task Killers in that article. This isn't 2008 and we're not using underpowered G1's running poorly disciplined first generation applications. Or Windows Mobile.
croak, i guess im uninformed onthe subject, ill do a google search on that topic. In the meantime, if you drop back in, would you mind elaborating? I'd be glad to clarify/expand what i've written in the guide to ensure users understand their options so they can decide what they would like to do and what they wouldnt .
and thanks alot for the support accinfo. I'll release the plugin officially later tonight in a thread where everyone can read it (woot). Gonna make a few changes first.

Similarly, I find the whole "oh task killer is a must have" quite misleading. My phone is fast enough for multitasking.
Okay, here are some reasons.
Con: Either the task killer will kill too fast or too slow. The ignore list isn't really 'perfect.' Sometimes, you want to kill the app, sometimes you don't. In the end, you will have to manually delete the app.
In short, task killer does not kill the right app at the right time.
Any objjection, anyone?

Here's a good start:
http://geekfor.me/faq/you-shouldnt-be-using-a-task-killer-with-android/
There's still a time when you need to nuke something, but you can do that with Android's built-in task management if need be. There's even an easy way to access it.
Long-press on the desktop, select Shortcuts, scroll down to the bottom of the list, select Settings, and then select Manage Applications.
Once you have that open, hit Menu, Filter, Running Programs. Find your rogue program and nuke it by clicking Force Close.
I should add there's a few other useful shortcuts you can select under Settings, the most handy for new users probably being Battery Usage.

Thanks for the great suggestions, i'll write it in now and leave some space for an FAQ. and the document is only there for bad ass mofos like you who actually take the time to proof someone's work when they need it. I'll post the contents of this doc here after i add in some of the suggestions i've gotten and reread it one more time.
Im thinking about adding a section for the recovery that was recently released for us, but im wondering if that will cause too much confusion
You're welcome, you should be being thanked more than me being thanked.
Confusion? If you are able to format document with enough usage of "bold / italicise / underlining" then it would be a breeze for readers to read it.
Usuaully, people combine letters / number assigning to the table of contents. In turn, it'll be easier for users to use search (Ctrl + F) to search that most immediate issue.
For instance,
(PYP) Prep Your Phone
(PYC) Prep Your Computer
(RYP) Root Your Phone
(SO) Speed Optimization
(SO1)Swapping out Slow Samsung Launcher
(SO2)Task Killer
(SO2)Removing ATT Bloatware
(BO)Battery Optimization
(GPSO)GPS Optimization
(SME)Sideloading Made Easy
(RAMR)Removing ATT Market Restrictions:
(RAG)Recommended Apps and Games
Thank you, i will do that. Currently adding an idiot proof section on how to use clockworkmod recovery . I wish i had some mac users that could give me some tips on how to root and set up their macs for the captivate. I really want someone's personal experiences on the subject.

I use a mac, what do you need to know?
badass thanks, where did you get your usb drivers and how do you sideload apps to your phone
Oh i also heard you have to do something different when you root from a mac. did you use the android sdk? what would you recommend other mac users do to root their phones?
Macs don't require USB drivers, but for god know what reason it only connects when you are in debugging mode. I'm assuming this will change with a software update though. Rooting is the same as a PC once you have the update.zip and sideloading apps is supposed to work with the mac/linux version of sideload wonder (android and me) but I haven't been able to try it because the download link is down. Additionally I don't see why the DB solution shouldn't work, but for me it didn't even after correctly altering the database (I did for sure because I confirmed it with a SQL DB editor on the phone. Regardless everything is much the same on the mac, except the actual software solutions of sideloading which require a different program.
You should really consider creating a Mac version to go along with the PC version to cover all bases (granted you don't actually own a mac)

piece of piss to sideload it, - there's a step by step thread on how to do it too ??
I somehow had it because it was on my S2 or I downloaded it before it was taken out. I liked Watchland and first because of the variety of faces and they downloaded as GWD files but you can't download anything anymore. It just sits there on preparing and the developer pretty much doesn't update it much. It's a great concept but poorly executed. It's a piece of junk with a lot of potential. I used to swear by it but it's pretty much going downhill for a while. I predict it will be dead soon.
Apparently, the developer moved to China, and has a hard time keeping up with it, but says he's not done with it.
http://watchland.ca/2016/10/29/the-future-of-watchland/
In the meantime, while it is usually slow to load, if you surf around within the app on your phone, eventually, when you go over to "Categories", you can usually get into each brand and download a bunch of cool faces. Then just look in the download folder on your phone, and email yourself to install it via Gear Watch Designer on your PC.
If you do want to try to get the app on the watch, I haven't tried it yet, but here's the thread explaining how to do it...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gear-s3/themes/sideloading-watchland-app-t3517079
Yes but problem is that at first you could download most of the shared faces but now pretty much everything I try to download won't download and is stuck at preparing. I read that same blog post and if you look further on the blog, I think the guy has had server issues in the past.
Like I said, nice idea but poorly executed. I totally understand that the guy went to China but for now and until he gets a team together or comes back, it's a piece of junk until someone takes it out of the junkyard.
I'm not putting the app down and when I first started using it, I must say it was awesome and it's even more awesome that it downloads the gwd files so you can edit them or sideload them with the watch designer program as opposed to Mr Time, and Facer which really limit you as to design options.
For now I just use Mr. Time because I was able to design a simple watch face that I like and it was easier to design than doing it in GWD.
Sweet watch face you made - I like it!
For what it's worth - for me, it seems like none of the "categories" (brands) will even open, UNTIL I go over to the "Newest" or "Most Downloaded" first sections first. Then, when I go back to the categories, for some reason I'm able to get into any brand and download any of the faces. Give that a try (and/or let me know if you want me to download any brands you.)
But you're right, it would be sweet if it worked the way it was intended!
I can only download previously downloaded watches. I cannot download any other watch faces.
It's probably an issue with the servers and the developer is in China, nowhere to be found. Maybe if he were to get a team going or devote his time to it Watchland would be the best. To bad though. Like I said, junk until it starts getting some support. Also, with Mr Time and Faces it may be to late to come back.
Hope this jpeg works?
Something i came across which may be of interest?
Yeah, it's coming back! Here's the story from the developer himself...
http://www.tizenexperts.com/2017/01/watchland-for-your-gear-s-s2-s3-fit2-watchface-download/
Looks promising but looks like it's going to turn in to another facer or Mr. Time website and app. The beauty of the original was the ability to upload face look alikes and yes, I understand the whole copyright thing but honestly that's what it was good for. If it's just going to be another Facer or Mr. Time Maker, I'm not impressed u less it has a better design interface which I doubt. Plus the designer said it himself said he is the sole person on the project which leads me to believe it will be the same business as usual.
I'm optimistic but doubtful. I have the companion app on my S3 and the nice thing g is the ability to load gwd files without the designer. If he can get the companion app back o with that ability then it will be worth it in that sense but even sideload in with companion app does not work 100% with all GWD files.
Watchland new name
Not sure if this thread is dead or not, but i was a few pages deep in a comment section for the very same topic. I found out that the d3veloper had to chqnge the name of the companion app to 'Connected Watch' in the samsung app store. Hope this helps.
On a whim I decided to reinstall the app since I uninstalled it when the new one was released since it has none of the features I wanted, specifically any of the articles.
Super happy you finally brought articles back to the app, but what happened to being able to open an article in an external browser? Or even simply being able to share it with others? I have to go Google the title after on a different computer if I want to continue reading, and have the time I end up on a different site viewing it because I don't want to have to scroll down to find xda specifically to share it with others.
Also I went to report an app issue and kept getting a JSON error about the syntax being wrong, yet you can see the above text has no special characters even..
