[Guide] How to listen to Pandora radio outside the us - Android General

Just thought there were some people that wanted to know.
This requires a rooted phone!
Firstly download the Pandora radio apk from a filesharing service or use market-enabler to get access to the American android market and download it from there.
Next, download Orbot from the market. Install it and don't forget to give it root permissions.
Before you press the on button in orbot, go to the app settings and select pandora to run through orbot.
Also check the "transparent proxying" box.
Next, start orbit by pressing the power button on the app to start the service.
Now open Pandora and it should work.
If not, try restarting orbit (kill the task too if it can't start again). Also if it prompts that it isn't available in your country AFTER it has launched, just press the back button and it should work. If you have any questions just ask

Hi followed your instructions to the letter but doesn't work. I get the message that pandora is not available in my country even with orbot running. I then close orbot and relaunch it but it freezes and can't connect anymore.

Works like a charm, thank you!

if it dosent work, try reinstalling orbot

Doesn't work for me Tried reinstalling Orbot.
Galaxy S Froyo, UK Orange.

Didnt work on desire.
could you explain your settings on your orbot and what version is your pandora apk

@GlobaL_TroTTer
Thanks a lot. That worked like a charm.

I'm using Pandora 1.4 on a rooted stock Samsung Vibrant ROM.
In Orbot Settings,
Select Transparent Proxying.
Click on Select Apps (wait a long time for all the apps to show up). Select Pandora.
Start Pandora. Wait a while. I had Pandora setup in the US. So I don't know what happens if you are installing Pandora fresh. But for me, it started playing.

COOL..WORKS FOR ME.. SEA region
thanks for sharing...

Nope doesn't work for me either on Desire with Froyo DeLite 1.1

Aaaah, thanks for the great tip of rebooting. Works perfectly on my Desire now

Not working on my Motorola Milestone. Already tried rebooting and reinstalling Orbot.

g/adp1 germany - doesn't work, even after reboot and sending all data through tor

Same for Samsung Galaxy S. Even after reboot and reinstall..

Works great on N1 in Aus. Cheers
Just curious any idea how how much avg data this uses on either high/low quality?

Not working, N1 in SA.
Thanx anyway

works like a charm.. orbot needed a few tries to connect though so keep trying

Does not work for Galaxy S. Tested pandora 1.4.1.

Another possibility is that the Tor node you're ending with isn't located in the US. Tor is a global network, so you could be ending with a node in Germany or somewhere where it isn't supported.
I'm not familiar with orbot, but you should be able to use something like "new identity" to switch to another node. Eventually, you should get one in the US.

[Q] Nexus S and Market Website Installation

Have any Nexus S owners had any luck getting installations from the new Android Market Website to work ?
I can install to my ZTE Blade (rooted with custom ROM) without problem but whenever I try installing to my Nexus S (rooted with stock 2.3.2) I get the message "This app will be downloaded to your device shortly." but nothing happens on the phone.
I've tried signing in and out of GTalk without any success so I'm wondering how other users have got on.
I've not tried it yet TBH, sorry.
Works fine for me anyway. Download starts a few minutes after adding it. sync on? Checked market settings?
Mine works fine as well, it's almost instantaneous for me to install stuff via the market website.

GMail sync is off as I don't use the Gmail client but it's the same on the ZTE Blade that works.
As for the settings, which market settings should I be looking at ?
On the Phone App the only option is Notification which is set to "Notify Me" (the same as on the ZTE Blade), while on the Market Website the Nexus S is there and set to "Shown in Menus". Is there something else I need to set ?

Rogers Gingerbread 2.3.3 Bug Report Thread

My fellow Canadians...
I have noticed a number of issues with the latest official firmware for the Rogers captivate. I think it would be a good idea to put them all in one place and try to start figuring out what common issues exist and perhaps we can address them all at once. Please state the issue, when it seems to happen, and what if any modifications you have made to your software setup. Maybe someone will notice a pattern or trend and we can get them resolved.
Thanks!

One major issue I have noticed is when updating apps through the 3.1.5 market. It seems to only happen when I am updating an app, not when I am installing a new app:
Sorry!
The application TwLauncher(process com.sec.android.app.twlauncher) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
At which point I have to force close it.
Also, I have experienced random shut downs, I will click the power/screen lock button to unlock the phone, and it seems the phone has shut itself off. If you hold down the power button it boots normally.
Anyone else experiencing these issues?

Did you try a factory reset after you updated?
Voice for Swype
The voice command for Swype doesn't work.......
1. Speed dial no longer works. Says 'USSD code running' then closes and gives message 'unknown application'
2. GPS has stopped working completely.
As far as the launcher crashes, I don't use touchwiz. I do use Launcher Pro. It does seem to crash every so often. I've replaced all my widgets because I've read somewhere that this might help.
No random shutdowns here.
I talked to a samsung technical support rep and his captivate's swype voice input didn't work either.

GPS works perfectly on mine captivate 2.3.3 and I get better reception and locking time. But GPS will stop working if you flashed a custom Kernel on it! I know that because I tried it and GPS wasn't working when I had a custom Kernel, had to flash back the stock kernel.
Edit: I just tried Speed dial and it's working perfectly, I think there is something wrong on your phone.

I also don't have any issues with the GPS or Speed Dial. My only mod was rooting with the FUGU kernel.

I hadn't thought of that; I wonder if I'll lose my root? Come to think of it, I wonder if that's causing the launcher crashes...

Got the phone from Rogers with 2.1 then upgraded to 2.2 then to 2.3.3 (all done through Kies. GPS was ok but spotty on 2.1 and much better with Froyo but hoped Gingerbread would bring more improvement.
I've tested it since Rogers released 2.3.3 and on a few occasions I've even gone to the roof of my building on a clear day and waited for 45mins!! and nothing! Not lock then lose it but NOTHING! Speed dial I can live without but I actually use the GPS quite a bit.
Since upgrading I've done a factory reset 4 times and even sent it in for repair, which came back saying "upgraded SW and factory reset" which fixed nothing.
I've just rooted (just root nothing else) and I've tried to do use the gps code but I can't even get into that!!
What can I do at this point?

Yeah, with the 2.3.3 you can't access the gps setting by entering the code, because everything you enter the code *#*#3214789650#*#*, you'll get a message saying "Service mode has crashes blablaba...". The only that I found to bypass that was to go to market and install the app "Anycut" then launch it, select New Shortcut, Activity then choose Angry gps.
I'll look up what's the problem that causing you not to get a good gps signal.

Man I was going nuts trying that gps code. Googled and searched this forum and everything pointed to that code. Was ready to toss my phone off the roof!
Was reading these forums for the past couple weeks learning how to root/flash (just rooted today actually) to get gps working.
I'm guessing I might have to try flashing it again with the stock rom from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=979133 but gotta do some more reading before attempting it.

I use an app called GPS Status from the market. There, in the menu under 'tools', you can 'manage A-GPS state and wipe the location info the GPS has back to scratch. Then download the assistance data from the internet. This worked well for me and I do it from time to time to keep things current.

How long have you had the phone? The random shut downs is not a ROM issue. I am pretty sure it is a hardware problem. It was acknowledged by Samsung. There is even a list of effected builds. I am sure you could find the build numbers with a little search. I had this problem when I first got the phone last December but had Rogers replace it. If it is the same problem, I think you will notice that the sleep of death only occurs when the battery is like above 85% or somthing like that. It has been a while so I can't exactly remember.
I can't seem to get the firmware actually downloaded. I'm going through kies and it recognizes my phone, and recognizes that I need to upgrade, starts downloading the upgrade and at 12% it disconnects. I have two screen shots here that show what I am talking about.
Any ideas?

Tried this the entire day and still nothing. I know it's kinda cloudy out today but still nothing.
i found 2.3.3 very slow, and poorly built. no voice button in swype PEEVED me off.i was originally making my custom canadian rom off Kh2 (rogers 2.3.3) but i dropped that project and released a canadianized/rogersized KJ3 (2.3.5).

My captivate is still 2.2 and while connecting to Kies it says this version of the device cannot be updated.
Current version shows PDA: JL1/phone: JL1/CSC: JL1 (xxx).
I had rooted via Super one click and I can see Superuser installed. I havent used it for any purpose.
I removed my external SD card and did factory reset. No luck.

problems with modded huluplus app

so ive downloaded the huluplus modded app from xda to use on my unrooted transformer (i have the latest US update).
whenever i try to play a video it loads the ads perfectly but then tries to buffer the show unsuccessfully and gives me a message telling me to check my connection and try again. afaik my connection is perfectly fine. i can stream hulu on my laptop just fine and this problem still happens even on the lowest quality.
any ideas?
hello...
I just upgraded to ics and rooted it
I tried every method mentioned here and still was unable to get hulu to play. GF really likes it so I had to try everything!!! anyway the only way I was able to get it to work was through www.playon.tv . I don't like that you have to pay for it but I don't see another way right now. They have a 2 week free trial so that might get you to the point to where you can find a hack that works for you. If you do please post a how to reply!!

S Voice APK

The S Voice APK was leaked so I decided to download it and try it. There are some downloads that aren't working as they keep giving parse errors so I found one that does work. Some things work and some things don't. I am trying to set up a custom wake up command but I'm guessing either due to some proprietary technology limited to Samsung or just because the APK wasn't meant for our phone, it is giving me a "Unfortunately, S Voice has stopped." error.
Hopefully this can be changed to work with our HOXs better. It does seem to be able to answer my questions so I'm guessing it is able to connect to Samsung's servers. Asked where I was currently located and it brought up a map and I asked about the weather and it brought up a weather forcast even though I uninstalled HTC's weather apps. So there's hope I guess.

Seems to have issues with wifi. If I have it turned on and go into the app, it only lets me do one command. Then I can press on the button but nothing happens. When I have wifi off, it works basically fine; albeit the voice is a little slow. Interestingly, I can turn it off before going in then have S Voice activate my wifi and as long as I don't leave the app, it works fine. As soon as I get out and go back in it stops working properly.
Eh not the greatest but better than what the hox has.

you can set it up to listen for the "hi galaxy" command, or another command of your choosing, it will use more battery, so it's not on by default.
for me though, it crashes every time it tries to complete my query.

It works off and on. I had times it worked well with little lag, but also had periods where it would just kick off a network error or would FC. After clearing cache and waiting it would randomly start working again. It really isn't anything special though. It seems like it is just a skinned version of Vlingo. It also looks like it works alot kinda like Siri by using Wolfram Alpha.
Vlingo looks like they are beta testing a newer version of Vlingo assistant that has a wake up command option like S Voice. It only has a few options currently though

i'll try that.
pretty sure the network errors (not force closes) are due to samsung not having the servers ready for public use, and as such are turning them on and off on their end.
on a slightly related topic, samsung really phoned it in on the UI for this app, they basically ripped off apple's setup, if they were having issues with apple legally before, this app and design is not going to help.
i wish samsung would hire some competent and creative developers for their products.
Works fine for me once I uninstalled the stock voice app.

The only bug I get is when I hang up a phone call that was initiated using voice to go it will pop up a window saying that the app quot working.
It doesn't have every feature but it has a bunch and they work pretty reliably.

[Q] Hotspot on phone won't connect to android tablet

I'm not sure where to put this so I'm going to post it here but if it's in the wrong spot please feel free to move it, Mod.
Ok, I have a Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE (downgraded to 3G, no 4G in my area) running Android 4.1.2 that I use my Hotspot internet off of. I have connected it to just about everything, computers, tablets, and other phone and it has always worked perfectly until now. I got a Visual Land Prestige Pro 7D tablet running Android 4.1.1 for Christmas and for some reason my phone's hotspot won't connect to it. It says it is connected but when I go to use the browser or any app that uses the internet it never loads or doesn't work. Sometimes the signal even drops out and reconnects but never actually works. I did some research and it sounds like it might be an IP address conflict but I am not sure how to fix it. Some sites suggest downloading another tether/hotspot app so I tried a few. Some revert back to the original hotspot setting on my phone, which of course did me no good, and some just plain did not work, they did exactly like my original hotspot, connect but won't work. I have pretty much figured out that it has something to do with my phone's hotspot since my tablet works perfectly fine on other people hotspot or wifi internet. Can someone please help me figure out what is going on?! Thanks in advance!
Are you on the stock ROM? Seems to be from your post.
You've tried using the built-in tethering feature, as well as some 3rd party software. Most of the 3rd party programs will create an 'ad-hoc' network which typically only other computers can connect to. There's some threads around here that discuss how to remedy this on stock. Search around.

Yes I'm still on the stock ROM the phone came with. I have tried the built-in and 3rd party apps and neither is working. I'm really not sure to look for. I have tried a few different things including changing the IP address in my phone hotspot settings and nothing works.

A phone w/o root is less than half phone.
BTW you can try foxfy or pdanet, the latter works surely, but at the price of a client installation on the PC side, and is USB/BT only.
I haven't tested the former

I have rooted my phones before but I like this phone the way it is for right now and I just don't want to go through that long process of rooting it.
I have tried Foxfi, it connects but like the others, the browser and app never load, but I can connect to any other wifi or hotspot and they load fine. From what I have heard Foxfi and PDAnet are the same, they even have a combined app. I have done some more research and it looks like maybe my phone or tablet, which ever one, is running adhoc (?) and either one or the other can't use that. Does that sound about right?
PDAnet and foxfi, are two apps sold by the same company, but are all but the same thing.
PDAnet is a 10+ years old program, is older than android, and is an absolutely proven SW, working on multiple platforms either on server and client side.
FoXfi is a relatively new program that manages to work on a great number of devices, but that is not guaranteed to work on any device.
If foxfi doesn't work on PQ, I'm afraid there is nothing you can do w/o rooting the phone.

Install TWRP, it will automatically offer to root the device after booting to recovery and then in recovery restarting to system.
Otherwise follow this guide to install CWM / SuperSU.

Sorry for the late reply. (time zone is our enemy
BTW given arrrghhh already replied, I can only add to avoid confusion to follow the linked thread about CWM, but replacing the CWM part with TWRP.
The latter is more newbie friendly and, will root automatically the phone, and will also block the function that restore the original recovery on the first boot.

Ok, it has been awhile since I have did this. Last successful root was an HTC Hero, if that tells ya how long it's been. I just tried but I am stuck cause I can't remember what to do. Can someone please give me the noobiest of noob instruction on how to get this done? Please?!

Where are you stuck? Did you read the guide I linked? Have you checked the official TWRP page?

Basically you need to install the drivers and get ADB working, before doing anything else
Once you have done that step you can unlock your phone, using the instructions provided on the CWM thread, and in the related motorola website iself.
Then is flashing the TWRP is pretty easy, you just need to start your phone in fastboot mode, connect your phone the the pc, then issue the command
fastboot flash recovery twrp-something.img
(replace the last part with the real name of the file downloaded from the TWRP thread.
then reboot in recovery once (is mandatory to not reboot in system the first time) and when you will exit the recovery environment, it will ask if you want to root your phone.
That's all
This is a quick walk-trough, I hope you can understand that I can't detail every single step more, if and when you have doubts, just google a bit and ask for the definite problem you may have, here.
