THIS ROM CANNOT BE ROOTED AND IF YOU INSTALL THIS ROM YOU WILL LOSE ROOT

Can we have a big disclaimer that this is NOT rootable and people will lose ROOT if they use this?

Just tested and indeed S-Off remained so I was able to re-gain root with Unrevoked forever!
Edit: BTW I had to update to .79 HBOOT before using this it kept failing with ENG (.76) HBOOT...

Can anyone else confirm that? I'm sure that HTC must be able to patch up the S-OFF somehow, right? I doubt that you can be rooted 'forever'

does this install PRI 1.4?

Got a link to the .79 HBOOT? I'm thinking about trying it as well, what steps did you take to re-gain root?

Sure they can, but they will also do damage to all of their own test phones that have S-OFF.
And if they do, then I'm sure the Unrevoked team will do it again...LOLOLOL...

I can confirm that after using this I was able to regain root being as though I had previously installed unrevoked forever. Unlike a previous poster I did not have to upgrade to hboot .79. I just has to rerun the exe when I got the error.

Great question. Only one way to find out though. I'm downloading it now and will run it through DSIXDA's kitchen when it's done. If you beat me to the punch why don't you let the rest of us know

OK dude, I copied the rom.zip file from this .exe file, loaded it into DSIXDA's kitchen and, yeah, it's working just fine as a base ROM for cooking so far. I'll add root perms to the ROM, zipalign it and get it loaded into an AVD to see how it goes from there. I've been looking for this

Why?
If you use AlphaRevX to s-off, then use GingerBreak you will have you stock ROM rooted.
Maybe I am missing the point

[SOLVED] Best way to Root only

Hello!
Just wondering what the best way to gain root only is on my Desire S. Would it be SuperOneClick or Gingerbreak? That is, no custom ROMS or recovery, just root so I can run Titanium Backup and a couple of other root-only apps.
My Firmware info:
Baseband: 20.28I.30.085AU_3805.06.02.03_M
Build: 1.47.161.2 CL78999
HBoot: 0.98.0002
Radio: 0-3805.06.02.03_M
If it matters, I'm on a Vodafone UK branded model.
Oh, and like anything else, to reverse root, it'd just be to delete all instances of su and busybox on the file system?
Thanks a lot
Edit: Whoops! Forgot my disclaimer - I'm not a noob, but I'm not entirely sure what the best method is with the latest firmware without making any 'irreversible' changes to the bootloader.
You can run either of them. I used gingerbreak because of its simplicity. Just an apk which you install and run.
Also are you s-on or s-off?
Im pretty sure you can unroot using those two methods. But double check if you want.
Sent from my Desire S using xda premium
I'm S-ON. I'm willing to make it S-OFF if necessary - but I'll take a look at Gingerbreak. (Which I think will only give me Temp Root, which will be fine as I only want to back up a couple of apps!)
Thanks!
Well , I will say you should go with Superoneclick , As it has 99.9% success rate, where as Gingerbreak is at work everytime. I rooted my DS with SuperOneClick. Well if u r going with gingerbreak then Good Luck..
The only reason i didnt recommend superoneclick is because when i rooted my phone superoneclick wasnt available for desire s so i didnt want to recommend it but obviously if your saying its better than gingerbreak then it probably is. Plus gingerbreak worked first time for me. I think when you s-off it should give you permanent root

Both SuperOneClick and Gingerbreak didn't work, so I ended up using Revolutionary.io.
Seems to have worked well, even though I've voided all warranty (and the phone is only 3 days old!).

I don't see the harm to s-off and I think it'll be better to do so coz it'll reduce the possibility of getting wifi/connection errors when you flash custom ROMs/kernels.

[SOLVED] Cannot for the life of me flash hboot on 2.2

i have an htc evo shift 4g that originally had 2.3.4 on it. i successfully (i think) downgraded the system to 2.2. but every single time i try to flash the hboot_eng.nb0 to gain S-off the md5sum comes back different than its supposed to be. funny thing is, its perm-rooted somehow. i decided to go ahead and reboot anyway and attempt perm-root and it stuck. no brick, no errors, no nothing. its fine. but as far as i have read i need to have S-off to be able to flash custom roms.
am i correct in this assumption?
before anyone tries to point me to an hboot flashing tutorial, be aware i have looked at ABSOLUTELY EVERY SINGLE ONE AND FOLLOWED DIRECTIONS TO A T!!!!!
any help would be absolutely appreciated
EDIT: SOLVED
ok so after thinking i did everything right (which i sorta did) i glanced through all the tutorials again and found the answer.
CREDIT GOES TO gzetski and unbrkshft AT ANDROIDFORUMS.COM
All I had to do was re-install 2.2 per gzetski's instructions. Then I followed the rooting instructions at the top of this post as if I was running 2.3.4. It was flawless. I was able to downgrade the hboot and S-OFF. The phone is now running CM7 and the owner is quite pleased.

You don't have to be S-Off to flash custom ROMs... but it sure makes it easier. Go into bootloader and let us know exactly what it says at the top, there should be about 4 lines.
Re: [Q] Cannot for the life of me flash hboot on 2.2
Yup, if you're s-on you can flash roms but you have to flash the kernel seperately, which means you have to carry around a computer with you whenever you go on a flashing spree

Actually, as IT mentioned, I think I'm wrong about flashing. I believe s-off removes all flashing restrictions. Downgrading is no longer necessary.
It's the fun stuff that will take some time.

What can we expect now that we have s-off? Or rather, what would YOU like to see. I'm curious what the typical One X user wish list would be?
Also, I saw you post in the boot animations thread. Did you get it to work? Which animation did you pick?
i still haven't ran the s-off exploit yet. i also slept over 30 hours and missed the release. i was going to wait to run it until some hacks came out that use s-off but i guess not having to fastboot boot.img is good enough. ill run it in abit seems super easy, looks like basically a hacked up ruu =) i guess that is why it is called facepalm.

Interesting. S-Off means the radio is fully flashable (even for those on hboot 1.14). So I would think you can just flash another radio, if there are any issues.

The ruu doesn't actually install. It would need to run that a few times to fully install it. Basically we are telling the phone we are going to RUU, which in HTC's stupidity, unlocks the emmc partitions to be writable. Then the RUU fails when it finds superCID. So we cancel out of the ruu status, but the emmc partitions are still unlocked, and we turn the security flash off with soffbin3. And ya, that's why it's called facepalm

I'm running hboot 1.14 and can confirm that I've flashed CM10.1 (and restored a nandroid including the boot partition) without needing to fastboot flash the boot.img.
Seems like those running 1.14 are pretty rare around these parts...or maybe just quiet.
Edit: Restore was to AOSPA 2.54 (JB 4.1.2).
