Hi, I'm using android on my hd2, I know power issues are a common problem. I'm currently using set CPU to ease battery drainage. After using juice plotter, I've found the mobile web (apn) been costantly on to be a big cause of battery loss. Is there a decent program on marketplace that will limit the access time of the mobile web. I've tried juice defender but found it not to work. Any other ones out there.

Thanks for the reply ill give it a try. It seems that its only a toggle for sync / apn. I was looking more for a schedule. Ie turn on automatically for a set time then off again. I know juice defender. Does this but as I say. For me apn is still active. When the program should have disabled. It. The interface isn't very good. And no option for customising individual programs. So does anyone know of a program that will help. Due to trial and error I've found to save battery on rooted Droid, make sure all your emails are ticked off as read or apn will constantly try download them constantly. With huge battery drain

I'm looking for an app which can, as happens on nokia phones or on iphone, enable internet connection with the specified and desired frequency.
I'd like to download mails and get apps synced using the internet connection which should turn ON only, for example, 1 time each hour...
Internet Connection should be kept OFF during time other than when sync is needed also to preserve unuseful battery consumption.
Any ideas?
By Android settings I can see only "keep internet connection always on".
Look for Timeriffic in the Market

Tasker can set Auto Sync or Mobile Data entirely on/off on any kind of schedule you want. Mobile Data manipulation relies on APNDroid, which might have caveats or requirements, not sure.
Tasker can do a zillion other things too.
Honestly, however, with all of the things I have running on my Nexus One, including K9 Mail syncing two IMAP mailboxes, weather, some periodic GPS stuff going on in Tasker I have set up, I still see 2-2.5%/hr battery usage. I charge nightly, so this is plenty of battery life for me.
Anyone know of an app that monitors individual apps net connect? I use 3g Watchdog but would like to know what apps are using the net and how much?

I've noticed my Android phone is gobbling data a lot faster than my Blackberry ever did. I'd like to know what's eating it as well.
I know the Blackberry is a lesser experience, but I've burned through half of my data cap in a week.
I've now resorted to just disabling data unless I need to use it, but it would be nice to know if there is one app, or a few apps that are chewing through it that I don't need to be running.
"Phone Usage" is what you should be looking for in android market! Droidwall is another app that will allow you to explicitly enable/disable certain apps from accessing data on your phone!
Try spare parts, there's a battery management option that'll show you data usage, gps usage, partial wake lock and cpu usage. if it shows a UID in place of the app you just need a app identifier to tell you what that uid is.
Biggest thing I found using it was dolphin browser had a huge data leak even after closing it through exit causing massive battery loss on my phone

Droidwall requires root access though. I am trying Phone Usage now next to Network Monitor (which does not monitor seperate apps) cause I am wondering if Network Monitor catches everything (Provider says I am using more...)

Anyways, I have PhoneUsage, which is useful for showing how the data is spread across your phone, and shows the top apps. However, I don't think it shows individual apps..only the top hogs.
3g watchdog PRO does monitor individual apps also. This is one of the extra features on the pro version

this might be useful. Although it's more on applications that are not closed properly or running on its own..
You can identify the problem by looking at your CPU usage.. if you have application showing and the cpu is high. probably, the problem lies on the program.

Hello. I am also looking for an app that monitors individual installed app network usage (3G or WiFi) in a real time sense (graphically or text based).
There are several utilities that monitor apps individually (3g Watchdog, Network Counter, NetworkTraffic Stats, OS Monitor) but nothing I've found offers a real time showing of individual apps the way that some apps show real time network usage of the OS.
Some show hourly tracking and some will refresh and show slight changes, but for real time tracking purposes (what the heck is consistently sending data *right now*), these are not as helpful.
Some background: for the past few days, my Vibrant would only get 3-4 hours of uptime, way down from the 8-12 I'm used to. I then noticed that my 3G connectivity was always on in both directions and I wanted to know exactly which app(s) was constantly transmitting. With the hourly monitoring, I had to wait, and I might have missed it. With the constant refreshing utility, the changes were so miniscule and not sorted by actively transmitting apps that it was counter productive to search that way.
Again, I'm not looking for one of the many utilities than do real time monitoring of the total network traffic, but real time network monitoring of the individual apps.
If anyone knows of any app that can do this, assistance would be really appreciated.

Having decided against moving to Win Mobile 7 I got a Sensation a couple of weeks ago (from a HD2) and hence my first Android device.
All is going well apart from the data connection. On Win Mob 6.5 I had 5 business emails which the phone checked every 15-30 minutes. The phone would connect, check the emails and then disconnect. If I wanted to browse then when I opened the browser, it connected and disconnected when I closed it.
On the Sensation I seem only to have the option of data connection on or off. I have set the email to sync every 30 minutes but I have to have the data connection on all the time to let it do this. The battery drain is crippling.
I download Juice Defender Ultimate after reading another thread but after setting it up it only allows data for so many minutes in the hour and when I say that the browser should overide Juice it just says I have no connection.
I love Android but losing 75% of your battery in 6 hours because of business emails is not quite good enough.
So is there a way of getting the data connection to go on and off as required (both on demand and for scheduled automatic email syncs)?
And if not what Juice defender settings do I need to get it to do what I want?
Any help much appreciated.
I'm looking for an answer to this to, for the exact same reason. A "Data Connection Timeout" setting or something similar.
Switch to pushmail, saves you quite some data transfers and is more effective in the end. I have two hotmail addresses plus oen gmail on pushmail and I don't notice any more battery drain with data connection permanently on.
Settings>Mobile Networks>untick "Enable always-on mobile data.
This usually helps the battery drain a lot, especially if you don't have things that are always using data, like pandora and the like. If you have things set to specific intervals, then it should work like your WinMo devices and connect then disconnect as needed.
Admittedly the droid likes to be more automated than WinMo, and you have much less control than 6.5. (Never used Phone7, so I can't comment on that.) But, once you learn the tricks to using it (just like the tricks to 6.5) its just as powerful as WinMo was for the business geared user, as far as I can tell. The battery is something that takes some finessing as well, so keep working with it and keep learning. There are some pretty good guides available that can tell you steps to take, even a few here on XDA for the searching.
Good luck with your new droid device, it will become second nature in time. It took me a month to quit tapping the icons in the task bar. LOL.

I think the fact that the HD2 and the Sensation both use Sense helps and therefore it has been fairly easy to get to grips with Android.
I have already unchecked the 'always on' option but I never seem to get any emails unless I open the email program up...even when its running in the background. Win Mobile 6.5 used to check without the email being open.
I have had another play with JD and seem to have sort of got what I want but sometimes the data connection won't wake up after the unlock screen without a data toggle on and off.
Is there any better email apps from the market?

Strange because when I do that I get a lot better battery life and my push Gmail arrives in 2-3 minutes instead of isntantly. also Google Talk won't stay connected with this setting. Other than that it seems to work really well for me doing exactly what you want.
Does anyone else is having problems with auto sync? If I turn auto sync on the damn thing seems to run all the time even if there us no internet connection. Yesterday when I went to sleep I had 58% battery and just to test my theory I enabled auto sync,my network connections are set to be disabled from 11pm to 5:40am. After 6 hours of sleep my phone had onl 8% battery left. That is f**** unbelivable. Is there any service that I can remove from phone to stop this. I am using rooted sens rom with most of bloatware and sens stuff removed. Pleas advise me what can I do,beside thr obivous thing that is disabling auto sync.

When syncing the phone will turn the connection (wifi/3g) back on. Therefore turning wifi off will hardly help at all.
I would recommend using some app to control the phone connection. Personally i use Juicedefender.
When rooted, JuiceDefender can use advanced features.
Like putting your phone in flightmode from midnight till morning or disabling autosync after workhours (i use the cheapes paid version -JD plus-. I have no idea about other JD versions or other apps).
I am using CleverConectivity but it doesn't seem to affect the auto sync:/. Another thing when I have auto sync on the icon in statusbar is always present,this is very strange.

Try 2X Battery. Works for me.
I might found the root of my problems with auto sync. I will report it later, when some time passes. But for now it seems to run fine. I just had to disable Facbook Sync Live Feeds.
Now I can say that disabling Facebook Sync Live feeds has sloved my battery problems, and I can use Auto sync without too much battery drain. :good:
I try to tweak the phone to save as much battery as it can, but I still want to be able to use the Lost Phone functionality. What settings do you suggest?
For now I'm using these settings:
- Allow WIFI to sleep when in sleepmode
- Allow WIFI to scan even if WIFI is turned off
- No GPS
- Location is on battery save mode
- Don't allow mobile data connection when screen is of (using Llama)
Now im using the default Google find my phone website. For the theftie I installed Lockwatch (it will take a pic after a few tries of entering the wrong code). But you need a data connection / wifi for the app to sent the mail? So how to circumvent this if wifi and data is off after the phone goes to sleep??

But it looks like a really nice simple app. From what I can read in the product description it implies that Lockwatch turns on the required features by itself GPS, WiFi, etc. Have you tried "stealing" your own phone with your power saving settings activated? The other thing not mentioned in the product description is does the app continue to send periodic emails to update the phones location after it has been stolen and is moving? Maybe you know? I am using Lookout which can be interrogated at any time to located the phone. But it is not a lightweight app, which makes Lockwatch all the more interesting. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I monitored the battery life of my Moto G LTE for a while and I can say that in standby doesn't drain battery, even if gps and mobile networks are active (I tried using Runtastic while riding racing bike for about 15km: 1h of gps and mobile network consumed about 10-15%).
Remember that, even if you turn on location, doesn't mean that phone searches costantly gps signal, it searches for it only when apps request for it.

You're welcome. I try to test it a few times. I'm still not sure when the mailing and gps kicks in. I do receive a mail when fake stealing my phone So it works good from time to time.
There is an premium feature that will try to sent again when there is data connection again.
If you want even more lightweight, im now using Avira with Lockwatch. If you like your phone to take pics for app locking, you can try Smart App Lock. And if you dislike Chrome, use CM Browser

The "time to time" bit sounds worrisome! I'm on this group because I gave my wife a Moto G. She just wants a working phone, so now that it's pretty much setup right and she can "drive" it proficiently I tend not to mess with it (read - I am not allowed!) . We live in Peru 6 months a year and we both like the fact that I can ping her phone using Lookout if necessary to see that's she's safe. However, they removed the photo taking feature from the free version, and the paid version is now about $30 p/a. Quite reasonable, but this has prompted me to see what else is out there before giving them my money. I have read good things about Avira ($10 for Pro version), so your recommendation might be perfect. I have also just looked at avast! Anti-Theft (pro version $15 p/a), this also seems very comprehensive, I am not too worried about antivirus protection as she only uses the basic's. Anyway I'm still looking around to look at all possible options. Thanks!
Oh, and sorry I don't mean to pull your thread off track. But you do want a location app that overrides your battery saving setup when needed. So the more possible options open to you the better right? On our Moto G, the WiFi/3g data is always on. We get a 2 to 3 day typical battery life.

It's ok, maybe some good anti-theft app can do this overriding the battery saving setup thingy. Im now trying "Android Lost", "AntiTheft & Find My Phone" and "Theftie" (all free of course) . Since we are just both users, maybe we can help each other here on XDA.
Sure, I for one would like to know which app you consider to be the best. Also the reasoning behind the decision.
I hope that you you find one that can override your power saving settings. I would hope that they all can...

After a few tests, i think Theftie and Lockwatch are the best. But I still need wifi or a data connection. And as a backup i keep Android Lost. So in the end i cannot save battery if i want to use the anti-theft functionalities.
Let me know if you what you decided.

Have you tried cerberus? It's one of the most complete out there at a reasonable price
I have to say Cerberus is very complete, I think this is the first app I have seen that specifies in its description that GPS is turned on even if its turned off. Edit:- not quite, only on systems earlier than 2.3.3 on later version you have to jump through hoops and convert Cerebus to a system app. Then In the case @justanicename the phone still needs to get access to a WiFi of GSM internet connection. I presume the only chance is that if the phone is stolen the thief will try to use the phone and the GSM data connection will become active when the screen comes on?
I did some further research on the battery saving settings and found a discussion sayin that actually turning on/of the wifi/dataconnection/gps is draining the battery more. So I will try this for a while. Cerberus looks really nice, it seems that Theftie does a lot of what cerberus does too.
Hi, I tried Cerberus yesterday. It does everything as advertised. The memory footprint is 4.4mb, compared with Lookout's 19mb, though Lookout does provide antivirus protection. I started to try Theftie today, but was putoff by the requirement to sign in using Google+ a service that I don't like and don't use. So I removed Theftie. I will go with Cerberus costing the one time 3 Euro. Thanks @agusaon for the pointer.
