I posted a thread in the general section, but no one has responded, so I'm hoping maybe someone from these subforums can help me.
As most of you know, the Captivate is available through Amazon for only $50 and the deal has definitely made me want to buy it. However, at the same time, I'm afraid it won't fit my needs somehow and am contemplating waiting for the T-Mobile's G1 Blaze.
I like the Captivate and all, but my first apprehension would be the lack of physical buttons. The G1 Blaze has a full QWERTY keyboard which comes in very handy when playing games, ESPECIALLY emulator games. I love the idea of being able to bust out old school games on the go if you're bored. The Captivate can certainly do that, but I find touch screen phones don't go well with emulator games.
In addition, AT&T's plans feel a big expensive to me. $25 for limited data and $40 for a small amount of minutes. However, the tradeoff would be a good, strong, consistent signal. T-Mobile's plans are cheaper, but I'm afraid I won't be able to get a good signal inside my university's lecture halls and dorms.
Do you guys think I should get the Captivate or wait it out for the G1 Blaze?
Isn't there a 30-day try out period for AT&T? I would check that out.
Sprints Galaxy S variant - the Epic 4G - comes out at the end of the month and has both a full QWERTY and unlimited data/text for approximately the same price. Don't know how Sprints coverage is in your area, but that is something to check out.
Ah, but isn't sprint going to charge an extra $10 a month for 4G service even if you don't get it for ALL 4g phones?
That's the deal breaker for me...
Like another member said, I'd try out the providors for 30-days (which is what I'm gonna do, I'm on the fence about TMOUS and AT&T as well)
Oh yeah! I forgot there was a 30 day trial period. I'll give the Captivate a try then. I should be able to weigh the cons and pros by the same time next month as I'll be on campus by then.
@mesaone: I really don't like CDMA networks or phones. I tend to swap phones a lot. I went from an old school BB Curve to a Touch Diamond to a MyTouch 1.2 this year already x)

Walked into a Verizon store so my girlfriend could get a new phone. As the salesman was helping her out, he started up a conversation with me about who I had service with and what phone I was using.
Like a gun slinger pulling out his shiny nickle plated revolver I smuggly produced my fully hacked and modded Samsung Captivate. He was seriously impressed with it. Especially that I had a 2.2.1 ROM loaded on it with all the bells and whistles.
Then the fun was over and he hit me where it hurt....."How much are you paying each month for your service?"
To shorten up this story I will just skip to the part where he offered me a service plan on my 3 lines (2 of which are Captivates) that was almost too good to be true, and before I new it, my poor cappy was now nothing more than a hopped up mp3 player, and I was the new owner of a Droid X.
Its been 2 days, and I have yet to have a conversation where the phone doesn't shut down in the middle of it. I have flashed the latest and greatest ROM over on the Droid X side but it still reboots at will. I have found numerous people with the same problem after searching Google, but no fixes for it.
Coincidentally, the second droid is doing the same thing.
To be honest, even without the reboot issue, the DX just doesn't compare to my Captivate in any way.....well except for one. The GPS is stinking flawless on the droid.
I want to drive by the Verizon store and throw all three phones through the window and go back to AT&T begging them to take me back without either of them charging me out the yahoo in penalties.
Does anyone know if I can switch back without any issues or is Verizon and AT&T both gonna stick it to me? I made the purchase 7pm Sunday the 16th.
Its worth mentioning that two numbers have been ported over to Verizon and one will not be for another week or two. So technically I still have an account with AT&T.

At&t should be able to restore your numbers on your account. Basically everything goes back to the way it was before you ported. Then you should get credited back for the ETA fees if they already billed you for it. There may be reactivation fees though...
Doing so would also automatically cancel your Verizon account so you would need to return all the equipment back to them otherwise they'll charback your credit cards for the retail prices of the phones.

I am actually very tempted to switch to Verizon solely due to all the scrap and issues that ATT has given me in the past. And that their 4G network promises to bring only mediocre speeds is not appealing either.
I mean, I love my Captivate, but I don't think that ATT's service is worth the money or hassle. If my workplace wasn't paying and forcing me to stay, I would have jumped ship 4 years ago.
(Why didn't you get a HTC Droid Incredible? What were you thinking? )

You should have 30 days to go back to Verizon and tell them thanks, but no thanks.
Verizon gives you 30 days to try out new phones. all you have to do is return it and they will charge you a pro-rated amount for the service that you used, nothing else. No etf's or any penalties. And I'm sure AT&T would be more than willing to take you back, especially if you are coming back from verizon.

I have no problems with att, and verizon's 4g speed is still less than the six mb/s att's 3g pulls down. I seed no reason to switch to verizon. slower, less coverage, customer service is crap, phone are ****e... Att has been nothing but gold to me.

Verizon's theoretical speed is upwards of 15Mbps last I checked. AT&T's 3G coverage seems to be pretty shoddy for me; often when I'm travelling, I am forced to EDGE; it doesn't really bother me that much, but means my internet is heavily crippled. For customer service, ATT's bricked 4 of my phones and asked me to pay. I don't think it gets much worse than that; at least I managed to force them to upgrade my RAZR V3 to a V3XX after it just died within 2 months, then to send me a new one when they bricked that while unlocking it, then sending me a new LG Shine after bricking that while unlocking it when I owned it. Worst was when they bricked my Bold 9700 when they told me to update it after my data got spontaneously wiped.
AT&T has no good phones save for the Captivate and the iPhone (both of which are debatable at this point), so I have no clue what your point there is. Any of Verizon's Droids destroy both.

i also hate at$t, but in my area it is great!! and yeah i want the infuse! i need a bigger screen,atrix will be aswome im sure, just root, flash and love life
I got a free dell streak from my dell Rep and it is easily day shiznit. It came with froyo preloaded and it is unlocked. Works great on att but there is no compatiable software for front facing webcam.
Can't beat it really. And the GPS works instantly

I talked to the verizon rep that sold me my phones. He replaced the dx's (which have worked flawlessly btw), and told me to give it a couple of weeks before I made my move.
I have to admit, I'm liking the new coverage. I'm not getting the 2 and 3mgs download speeds I was getting on my cappy, (which I could only get in very few areas) but I am getting about 1.5mgs on the dx almost everywhere with verizon coverage.
The dx isn't a elegant a my cappy and I have had to jump through a couple of hoops to get a custom rom installed, but it is just as functional, and the gps has been spot on.
I miss my captivate pretty bad, but as the initial shock is wearing off, verizon doesn't seem do bad.
I still have a couple of weeks to decide and my cappy is still sitting on my dresser just incase.

Just to correct everyone about the "30 days" to return/cancel your service with Verizon. On Sunday the 16th (the day the OP purchased his phone) Verizon implemented a 14 day (not 30) day period to avoid the ETF.
I know this because I work at a national retailer who sells Verizon phones.
That explains why the rep said "just give it a couple more weeks." Wow do I hate people who try to screw others over (the rep in this case).
"You may return or exchange wireless devices and accessories purchased from Verizon Wireless within 14 days of purchase. A restocking fee of $35 ($70 for netbooks and tablets) applies to any return or exchange of a wireless device (excluding Hawaii)."

I know 2 people with Droid X's and TBH they are horrible. I'm not saying SGS phones don't have their own unique issues but the "official" 2.2 for the Droid X is seriously just bad. They both have random shutdowns/reboots and they are sluggish compared to SGS phones. The one lady I know used my cappy and didn't understand why her droid was was so much slower...at everything. I told her that's what she gets for buying a phone because it's "Cool" because they have a commercial for it ever other commercial break. Also did you look into if you get a discount through ATT for your job? I get 20% off my bill (5 phones, 3 cappys, iphone3g, crap flip phone) for a company I haven't worked for for like 4 years now.
As for the Streak, I burned all my Jinco's 15 years ago and bought jeans that fit. I don't care how great it supposedly is or isn't, a 5" phone is to big to fit in a normal pair of jeans comfortably and not look retarded.

That might be true Mike but my money says you'll be pulling your hair out trying to port 2.3 over to the Atrix with its locked up boot loader when the Bionic is to be released with it already.
And its almost a sure bet you can tack on about 6 to 8 months on AT&T's promised release date on any phone they advertise.

This is correct. He told me this Tuesday. I bought the phones Sunday. So I have until the next saturday to make up my mind.
Just so you know, Verizon's is CDMA which means it will have weaker call signal and stronger data signal. The signal bars only report your data signal, not your voice call signal. It can be very deceiving.
Also, you cannot use data while using the phone to talk to someone. So you can't say, "Let me look it up right now." Because it will just say "No Data Connection."
if you decide to stay with verizon, make sure you check your bill each month. vzw likes to add bogus fees that most of their customers don't even notice. this happened to both me & my gf (on separate accounts)
First Verizon's return policy is 14 days after that etf is 375$ no matter where u r n contract, 2nd they don't have a 4G phone that has 4G speeds nor do any carrier. ATT speeds are greater at 3G than all competitors except tmo areas that are using their upgraded 3g network they claim is 4g and they r barely faster but they have a small area their coverage covers without losing Singal since they "changed their 3g".
And who would do the droid x over the cappy? That sales man must be good at what be does because stock the cappy kills droid x in all benchmarks and speed tests for network since Verizon 3g network is the slowest of all major carriers. Do a speed test bet it don't do more then 1.2Mbps down when I can get 5Mbps on my cappy with ATT.
ATT 4G when it is rolled out will do 4-5x faster then what it does now which is suppose to be 7Mbps x 4 so around 28Mbps down is insane... my phone is already faster then a lot of dsl providers...
Anyway not flaming just wanted to put my 2cents in with facts. My brother owns a droid x its not bad but cappy is one nice piece of hardware

I am planning on purchasing wither the SGSII or SCII, as my first smartphone.
Right now, I have a very old, at least 7 year old, flip phone. The backlight doesn't work any more, so its a bit difficult to read text, the mic is going, so people can't hear me too well. But since I hardly use it anyway, I can wait. I also don't have a plan, I go prepaid and that works fine. I spend 100$ on my phone yearly, and I never go through it all (less than 10$ a month), so that is why I am also not going to get a plan, as paying 4x that a month for the same use is not worth it. Plus, I have wireless ever where, so a data plan may not be needed, but Ill see after a while, and get it if I need it.
I know the SGSII is out right now, but its with bell, not that it matters though. The captivate will probably be out in a month.
The SGSII is 4G, and the SCII is LTE I believe. A sales rep told me (and yea, I was just reading another forum that says to not take their advice too much) that 4G is really 3G, the standards for 4G dropped, and phones with 3G were marked as 4G. Then LTE is the "Real" 4G network, which should be faster than an SGSII. However, I don't really know about phones too well, and I wouldn't know if the 4G and LTE will make a big difference. Plus, if it is mainly through downloading, id do all my downloading at a wireless location since I don't have a plan anyway.
I'm with rogers right now, so I would have to unlock the SGSII from bell, but it shouldn't be too hard, the people here know what they are doing. I would be buying the phone outright, since I don't have the plan.

I hope I'm not posting this in the wrong place & I apologize if I am. Mods, please move this if it doesn't belong here.
Anywho, I'm at a crossroads right now & I really need some advice. I currently have an HTC Sensation with T-Mobile, and a Galaxy Tab on my family's Sprint plan. But here's my problem- I want a Galaxy S II. BAD. It is everything I want in a phone & more. I like my Sensation, but the bluetooth is not usable. It's a design flaw of the BT antenna, so replacing it won't help(tried that already anyway). I am sick of HTC & their form-over-function BS, and keeping this phone is not an option. I NEED functional bluetooth, I use it at work & in my car all day long. I'm in a bit of a pickle b/c I cashed in my upgrade on the Sensation in June, before I had even heard of the SGSII & thus will have to pay full price if I wanna get the T-Mo version(Hercules). However I have a full upgrade available on my Sprint line, and can get it from Sprint for $200 right now, which I can actually afford. I've been tempted to go back to Sprint for a while now, ever since the announcement of the merger & because there are a LOT of places where I only get EDGE or GPRS on T-Mo. I get no signal whatsoever at work, but I get good signal & 3g on my Tab almost everywhere I go.
I have NO IDEA what to do. I like T-Mo for the most part, but I make peanuts for money & it's gonna take me forever and a day to save up the $600 or so that I'd need to get the T-Mo SGSII unless I manage to sell both my Tab AND my Sensation within the next few weeks(which isn't bloody likely, I've already listed my Tab on Craigslist & the only hits I've gotten are from scammers trying to get me to ship it to Africa). And if I decide to go with Sprint I need to decide before Oct. 1st b/c I believe the price of their SGSII goes up after that.
Option 1) Get it on Sprint & cancel my T-Mo service(which will still be cheaper than paying full price for the Hercules) or find someone to take over the remainder of my contract. OR- try to trade my Sprint Tab for a T-Mo Tab & switch to a tablet plan rather than canceling(BTW does anyone know how much that would cost per month?).
Pros:
*Affordable
*Most realistic, doable option right now
*Better signal & data in more places
*Cheaper overall. I will be back on my parents' family plan and I'll be paying literally HALF of what I pay now(yes I'll feel like a kid but I'll save a hell of a lot of money, lol)
*Truly unlimited data
Cons:
*I'll have to figure out what to do with my T-Mo service.
*I'll lose the convenience of sim-swapping.
*I'll have a pile of expensive GSM phones silently mocking me.
*I've heard that the Sprint SGSII is not rev-B compatible. This isn't a complete deal-breaker but it's a con nonetheless.
Option 2) Wait for it to come out on T-Mo and pay full price.
Pros:
*I won't have to futz with my contract.
Cons:
*EXPENSIVE
*5gb soft cap on data
*The merger could still happen and I'll end up on Sprint anyway if it goes through. Even if it falls through, T-Mo's fate is still nebulous at best. I could be stuck on a stagnant network or one that gets sold to another company that could do who-knows-what with it.
As you can see, I'm really torn. At this point I'm leaning towards going back to Sprint, but I have kind of a sentimental attachment to T-mobile. They both have their pros & cons & I just cannot decide what to do. Has anyone made a switch like this? What would YOU do in my situation? Also, does anyone have any tips for getting out of my T-Mo contract if I decide to go with Sprint? Thanks for taking the time to read.
P.S.- If I decide to wait & get it on T-Mo, my Tab & Sensation will be for sale

I'm debating tossing the towel in with Sprint, and am looking for what you guys are suggesting. First and foremost, I need Windows Phone, so right away AT&T is very attractive. But here's my delemia.
Currently, I have Sprint with the following plan.
1500 Anytime + Unlimited Data + Unlimited Messaging + Unlimited M2M + 3G/4G on 4 lines
Total $215 a month (and rising, this was originally $160 with my work discount a year ago)
Well, thier service has been horrid, data speeds are pathetic and I'm just wanting to give up with them.
So that pretty much leaves me with AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon.
Verizon = out of question, for my plan it's like 360 bucks.
AT&T = most likely, as I can align my package to what I use, plus get roll over and keep that M2M or (anymobile if you will) for relativly 180 bucks, BUT, the kicker.
With TMobile still having an unlimited data plan (ala capped), would you guys think it's worth the risk to sign up with tmobile and hope the plan carries through?
Also, I read alot about congestion on AT&T, and honestly, I can't imagine it's worse than Sprint. Sprint just friggen sucks really bad lately, data speeds are 10x slower than Dial Up.
Anyone else switch from Sprint to another carrier recently want to chime in? This is gonna cost me nearly $1200 so I want to make sure it's worth it.

I recommend us cellular. I have been with them for over 12 years and service has always been great. phone selection isn't always good because they are a small carrier but they have a lot of android phones and at least one windows phone.

so as someone that's been with t-mo for over 10 years now...yes is a good one and worth the risk...
there's still a good chance that att will buy them, but there's a lot of opposition and legal challenges coming up
I think you can clearly get a better deal...and since they don't have larger user bases, the network doesn't tend to be as saturated and they tend to try harder to keep their customers...once you learn the tricks during the every two year renegotiation....
I would suggest, you take as much time as you can to try out their service int eh first 15 days they give you, to see what their network coverage is like in your area, but where I am, it's more than adequet. and the nice thing about them, that I'm experienceing, is while I don't have a 4g phone, my speeds keep getting better as they improve the hspa network speeds, unlike LTE, which if you don't get an lte phone now, you won't get any better performance until you upgrade...
I've been with spring a long time ago, left att to go to t-mobile, and had a verizon work phone a year ago that I gave back...I'm still very happy with t-mo and will stick with them unless att buys them.
Ok, I've looked at all the carriers and the resellers to include post and pre. I've been on a family plan for ever and I'm about to drop off and start my own family plan with my daughter.
I've just gotten a settlement and want to pay up front for at least the first year or more but want to stick to under 2K. What I'm having trouble with is deciding which is best. Everything I read is this is better but another says different.
When I drop off the Verizon and start my own I'll lose the unlimited data so I need to consider data, 4g, unlimited and whatever on 2 androids and what is the best latest and greatest.
Sprint looks like cheapest but no 4g unless I'm seeing it from for Arkansas and Indiana. Verizon has best coverage but data is limited and raises price when you go over which I would. ATT is expensive and has 2Gb cap which is about same for T-Mobile.
I'd love to buy two unlocked kick ass quad cores and do Simple which would be 4G but hear it's unreliable.
Anyone have any recent experience like mine that can share some input? I'm needing 2 Androids (best phones) with unlimited data (or a ton of it) and unlimited text and pic, plus around 1000 or more minutes.
My brain is fried, only reason I'm asking... Prolly over thinking but it's a lot of money.

since data is obviously a big must for you, i would suggest considering sprint above all. it will give u the unlimited data and relatively affordable prices. theyre launching the samsung galaxy nexus with 4g lte support very soon, and that of course, is a great developer phone.
if not the galaxy nexus, you will want to consider the samsung galaxy s ii epic 4g touch. it is sprint's version of the galaxy s 2 and definitely a phone that can hold its own. both phones are about 199 up front, and are quality samsung smartphones that should last you two years.

I've been thinking it's going to be sprint but not having the 4G is bugging me big time. It's almost as if they painted the whole map with 3G though so it will help. Daughter will be staying put in college but I'll be bouncing all over the place helping family take care of different things until I start getting low on funds again.
I cant do the throttled data as it will most likely be my only internet in the Toy Hauler that I'll be sleeping in and I like my Netflix to much. Maybe someone will know some magic combo that is better than anything I've seen so far. Have two weeks till she can port her number.

If you're looking for an available quad-core then no questions asked it's the HTC One X.
And you want 4G? Don't make it a priority in your checklist, 4G won't have the same coverage as 3G in the next 2-3 years and by then you'll probably be getting a new phone. IMO get into a carrier with the best 3G coverage if data is a must for you. You won't need anything faster on a mobile device anyway.

I had been looking to buy a digitizer for a G2X my niece had laying around and hitting Simple Mobile then my daughter told me she's paying 94 per month to ATT and has the smallest minute package and only 2GB of data. I'm used to being unlimited and paying less than that so I think that's insane.
I was looking at 2 that was on sprints site both being 1.2 dual, Nexus and G11 S Epic. Daughter already has an Iphone and I will if I have to (she asks) buy her another but I'd hate giving money for a mac phone. Would rather pay double for an Android than the iphone.

And you want 4G? Don't make it a priority in your checklist, 4G won't have the same coverage as 3G in the next 2-3 years and by then you'll probably be getting a new phone. IMO get into a carrier with the best 3G coverage if data is a must for you. You won't need anything faster on a mobile device anyway.

That One X comes out in June to sprint. I can stay in my family plan I'm in now if hers being att doesn't try and lock her into another two year.
