On the Captivate by the ear piece there are 2 little, well I don't know what they are look like maybe LED or sensors. Can anyone tell me what these are?
One is a light sensor so the phone can dynamically adjust the brightness of the screen depending on the lighting conditions in the room.
The other is a proximity sensor that prevents accidentally pressing buttons while the phone is being held to your ear.
There ya go.

Are there any tiny lights near the ear speaker? I see a clear little light type thing but mine does nto light up. I would have thought I would get different colors like on the 8125.

yep... light sensor. when you put the phone near your ear, the screen turns off... so you don't accidently "end call" Nice touch!
Also adjusts screen brightness... lower brightness when dark, brighter when light.
I have asked this elsewhere but have yet to determine what this is. It's right underneath the camera lens. It looks like an LED but there is no "Flash" function in camera program. It also looks like a light sensor for the screen backlight. But it seems like an unusual location to place such a sensor. Being on the bottom, or back, it would only receive indirect light and at many times get unintentionally covered up by ones fingers while holding the handset with keyboard extended. I also thought it could have been a sensor for the camera. But it has no effect on cameraboperation (eg.. autofocus, white balance etc). Any ideas? Thanks
It's the mute button when the phone is placed face down.
You must have lost the button or something, since there is a pic of a mic on it, but if the button is gone, I could see how you would think it was a sensor of some sort.
That's just a piece of translucent plastic that goes over the real mute
lighted-switch w/c is in the phone body. The screen backlight sensor and proximity sensors are up front by the earpiece.

I can make out the picture quite easily. You may want to consider glasses. I'm not poking fun really, I can see a traditional broadcast mic with a slash through it, suggesting it's mute capabilities.
I think he's looking at it with the cover off, in which case it does kinda look like a sensor of some kind.
Hi I have bought an LG G2 D802 from eBay for practically nothing. The only thing that was wrong with it is that the screen had been replaced by what I presume is a cheap Chinese copy and after the replacement the screen would seem to turn off randomly (particularly during calls) and could not easily be turned back on again. Otherwise the phone works fine. The only thing that doesn't work is the proximity sensor. However I presume that this is a result of the new screen. Having read around on several forums, it seems that the proximity sensor is extremely sensitive to things like screen protectors, which can obstruct, or limit or prevent the functionality of the proximity sensor entirely. I therefore concluded that the likely issue was because the proximity sensor is likely to only respond to light over a given number of polarities (dark infra-red, placed against face, something similar I presume, in daylight or bright light, nearer the blue end of the spectrum etc). This would simplify how the proximity sensor should work under a number of given scenarios.
In the end the workaround was simple. I simply opened the phone and disconnected the proximity sensor and placed a small piece of insulating tape over the sensors connectors so it couldn't inadvertently reconnected when I closed the phone. The phone is now 100% fully functional, minus the proximity sensor of course. It now just functions like any other normal smartphone. I am naturally more than pleased with this outcome, given what I paid for the phone, which itself is in otherwise mint condition.
However the question I have is that the reason the proximity sensor was included was to prevent accidental button presses when making or receiving a call, when for example the phone is pressed against one's face. However it strikes me that exactly the same functionality should be possible in software? What I am looking for then is an app that will either lock the screen (or turn it off) to prevent accidental button presses in this way while a call is in progress and that will disable itself as soon as a call is ended. I of course need to be able to easily disable it, either from the lock screen, or via the power button, so that for example when I dial an automated dialling service and they want me to press buttons to navigate their menu I can still do this.
There seems to be a few apps around that can do this, but my question is, which is the best? Which is likely to cause the fewest problems for what I want?
I have ordered a new proximity sensor from China in case the proximity sensor itself might be at fault, but really having read that this can cause several problems and is rather more 'gimmicky' than practical, I think a software solution would probably be better anyway.
it should be replace with same hardware sir to be able for your device able to control it.
So has anyone found a fix for this problem aside from replacing the sensor itself? Maybe a build.prop or by using terminal. My phone screen wont stay on because it detects its in my pocket all the time posted screens below of useful info.

Guys (and girls)!, I have found the solution, it took me like 6 hours to figure this out.
I have LS980 (LG G2 ofcourse).
I replaced the screen, and I actually refurbished the screen with LOCA glue myself, it is perfect, but apparently there's an issue with the proximity sensor, due to the specific shade they use to cover the inside of the glass at the location of the proximity sensor.
After replacing the screen, the Knock ON was not working, but KNOCK OFF was working fine.
In the Sensor Box i saw that i was getting half of the light that i was supposed to (on another LS980 i was getting about 800, while on the "faulty" one i was getting 400 light.)
And also the proximity sensor was dead, it showed 0.0 and a fallen plant.
I tried putting some tape, and colored it with a permanent market between the proximity sensor and the glass, and the KNOCK ON began to work, but during calls, the screen would not shut off.
I figured, there must be some SYNC between the light the screen is getting, and the proximity sensor, so i scraped off the paint that was on the glass where the proximity sensor is, so there will be much light coming in, and IT WORKED!!
SOLUTION:
Scrape off the dark paint on the glass (inside) at the location of the proximity sensor. do it gently.
clean it with alcohol so there will be no remains of paint.

Before you start to scrach the touch, try this.
On LG D-802 , the ruber thing on the proximity sensor was cousing me promblems. CUT the ruber only the part atached on the light sensor and proximity and turn it around. The big hole that was once on the light sensor(Ruber) comes on the proximity...
And that fixed my proximity. Now the light sensor is covered with the small hole on the ruber and the small amount of light is passing try that hole, try spreading it with heated something.

I think I am having the same problems with a G2. The digitizer on my girlfriend's phone broke so I replaced it with a digitizer/screen combo. No we can only turn the screen on (power button or knock) when there is a lot of light in the room. If it is dark, the screen will turn on for a second and then turn off. The screen doesn't go dark during a call either.
This problem didn't start until I installed the new screen. I scraped half the paint off but it didn't seem to make a different. I also don't have the screen completely sealed as I didn't have tape pre-cut for the shape of the phone. I wouldn't think that makes a difference but who knows.
Since I am a newbie in this technology, what is a proximity sensor and what is it used for when it detects or does not detect something?.. I installed the proximity sensor finder app on my Nexus 6 and I could not tell any details except timer started when portion of phone front was covered YET the measurement displayed did not say anything other than 0 or 5.00000 etc.. I also use the phone in speaker mode ..
The proximity sensor is there to turn the screen off during a phone call when you move the phone to your head. It turns the screen back on when you move it away from your head after. On the 6P it is located below the speaker grill.

No, the purpose of it is to deactivate the screen when it's against your face on a call so that you don't press things on the screen with your ear/face.
Yes, it does save a little power (you can power off the screen while on a call), but is really helps the screen know when you have the phone to your face. This allows it to disable input so you don't hit buttons on the screen while on a call.
It's a neat feature, but adds some difficulty because not all screen protectors are cut out to allow it to function fully. Like those above said, it helps you by not pressing buttons while you're talking.
I would also assume that android uses the proximity sensor for "on body detection" to tell if it's in your pocket or out in the open etc.
I am having similar sort of issue, I have glass protector on nexus 6P and when I dial any number the screen will go black and will not come back until the other person hangs up. even the phone is not near my face, how strange. not sure how to resolve
I also have a problem of my screen not turning on if I move it away from my face. At first I thought it was proximity sensor dead, but I used the proximity sensor finder app and was able to see that it works fine if I cover it. So it could be a bug with dialer/caller app in Marshmallow. Or maybe there's a setting somewhere.
How to turn off the proximity sensor? I have a tgsp that does not have a cut out for the sensor.
Return the tgsp because it's defective. The newer revisions do not suffer from the defect.

I believe I understood that there was a "three dimensional" sensor on this phone,
Above the flash I saw a sensor, but for the front face I think there is nothing
In use, I often have the screen that gets too dark, because my hand must hide this sensor, or the rear face directed towards the ground and therefore less light towards this face
Also, if I use my phone flat on a table or desk, it goes to a minimum, which is very disturbing since I like using my device a lot. ?
With the sun, we can see under the panel the fingerprint sensor in the middle of the screen, a small rectangle not very straight, moreover, but also a small circle at the top, where I imagine it Is there a light sensor, am I wrong or someone has some info to confirm this ?
