Making Full Image Of Phone? - Captivate General

I have my phone setup exactly the way I want it. Is there a program or a way to create a full image / copy of my phone? That way if screw something or get a phone replacement I can restore everything as it was on the phone - settings, data - everything.
I'm not talking about backups like T. Backup etc. Something like making a image of your computer with Acronis but make an image of your phone.
Thanks in advance.

nexus s txt thread recovery?

Hello, I have a question I hope you can help me with...
I've got a nexus S 2.3 and Ive just deleted a very important text msg thread, have I lost it forever or is there anyway that I can recover it??
If I can recover it can you please tell me what I should do as I ve never done anything ike this before. Many thanks, concerned android user.
Never tried anything like this before, so just some ideas as a general outline:
The first thing you should do is a complete image of the phone before the data can be overwritten (if it isn't already).
There is no convenient way to undelete that I know of.
I would search for the sms database file and try some sqlite tools on it. Look if there are entries that are marked as deleted or something.
If that doesn't bring anything up, I would use a good (hex-)editor to extract the strings from the file and see, if the data is somehow still there.
Anyway it will probably mean a lot of work, depending on how many sms you have stored and the best you should hope for is that you can manually reconstruct the thread in a text file or on a piece of paper.
Hello cgi,
thanks for the reply with advice!!
what is a complete image? how do i do this?
how do i search the sms database?
where do i get hex editor from?
do i need to back up any data before trying to recover anything?
many thanks,
Ray

An image is a complete copy of the data on the phone. The easiest way to do that is to use a custom recovery system like clockworkmod recovery. If you have a custom ROM installed, chances are, that you already have it.
First: Is your bootloader locked or unlocked?
Second: Which version of Android exactly is one your phone?
If your bootloader is unlocked, you can install a recovery image that will let you backup the data partition where your sms database should reside.
If your bootloader is locked but your Android version is 2.3.3 or lower, you can use an exploit that let's install a different recovery image.
If your bootloader is locked and your Android version 2.3.4 (and your phone is not rooted), then AFAIK you are out of luck.

I don't know in which files your sms are being stored, but it should not be that hard to find out.

There are a lot out there. I use okteta from the KDE project, but you can use whichever you want. You could use notepad, too, i guess, but that won't make things any easier.

That's the image I was talking about. You would first copy all the data on your computer.
CGIi,
Many many thanks for taking the time to reply to my question!!
I dont think there is much chance of recovering this thread, my friend has about half of the 900 texts in the thread which makes it slighty easier to swalow.
once again the importance of backing things up is key to keeping the pics, files, texts you want to keep. I'l try to do this even more in the future, I'm so sick of losing data from old mobiles, PC'S etc, I'm gonna back up everything from now on!!
Many thanks again, RAY

Yes you can if you install a custom recovery.
And once your recovery is installed, you can make a backup and this is complete image of your phone.
Except all of your data which are on your sdcard.
And I suppose that you have different guides in the S3 forum with all guidelines for install and use a recovery
So take a little bit of time and search, read and compare a little and when you are ready, you can install your recovery

Thank you for the help and so quick response.
I have search already on different forums about recovery but I read things like ADB, custom rom, flashing and so on....So I am afraid about doing something wrong which can break my phone. Till yesterday I haven't root my phone because of scare to do something wrong.
Then accident happened. My memory cheap break (without reason, nobody knows why). Samsung service change memory cheap (on warranty), but I have loose all my data. When I say data I mean my application with a few years data filled in (like t2expense, aCar....).So I have made search all over the net about rooting and making FULL (image) backup. Then I found the easiest way to root my phone with CF-Auto-root and that make me happy because was really quick and simple. I buy also Titanium backup and make full backup (all app, user+data). But then I read on different forum that Titanium backup isn't image backup and if I want to make complete image like backup I need nandroid backup.
So please don't be angry if I say that I don't understand what mean "install custom recovery" I want something like CF-Auto-root; simple !! Is there a simple way to do this "install custom recovery". I want to do this quick and simple without hassle. I don't have experience, and I not shame to say I am an idiot for the Android. Before my Galaxy S3 I have iPhone so, it is normal that I am afraid. I read so many about custom rom and all other thing that my head is full of android stuff. To much at the moment. I only want if there is possibility to make image of my phone (like True Image in windows)so if phone break I don't need to install all application again. I have try to search like you mentioned for the "install custom recovery" but I again find so many confusing info like for example bellow; So I am to afraid to do this without afraid that I will loose my data. If you can help me with some better way I will appreciate and I say thank you in advance.
One more time Thank you very much,
Slavko
Method 1:
1. Download the ROM Manager App: HERE
2. Flash CWM Recovery as the Verizon Galaxy S3.
Method 2:
- Stock Recovery, or CWM Recovery Touch
- TWRP 2.2 Recovery
- CWMod Based 6.0.0.8 Recovery for d2vzw 6.0.0.8
1. Download one of the recoveries you like best from above ^
2. Place the .img file onto your sdcard
3. Open terminal and type in these lines: (be sure to change the below)
Code:
$ su
# dd if=/sdcard/.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18
# reboot recovery

[Q] Fresh device complete backup?

Hi,
i will receive n5 in few days and want to know is there any good practices to start with.
I've read stickies and i don't mean that type of stuff, i mean something like backing up:
- all partitions (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2517503)
- backing other things like /efs (i see it can be done via TWRP : http://www.droidviews.com/how-to-backup-and-restore-efs-data-on-nexus-5/ , but what about other partitions?)
- complete NV backup?
Also should i backup these things after first boot, or that doesn't matter? (for ex. usage of stock rom for few days)
Thanks in advance
Not sure what you want to back up on a new device but what I did was put a custom recovery on and then made a nandroid of it while it was new. I also backed up the efs in twrp and stored it off the device. That'll pretty much cover everything
With the exception of the /efs I don't see any reason to back up anything, especially at first boot.
Google provides full factory images for each release. https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#hammerhead
Thanks for comments :highfive:

[GUIDE] How to restore your Nextbook Ares 8 - NXA8QC116 to Stock (TWRP/Rooted)

After tinkering with the tablet and trying my best to restore it I finally was able last night to restore it to a clean install using this method. I'm sure there may be other ways to do it as well but this worked for me and was painless.
1. Make sure the tablet is rooted/unencrypted using Vampirefo's guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/root-nextbook-ares-8-twrp-recovery-t3133165
2. Make a backup of your System, Boot, etc. of your current boot-looped ROM with TWRP.
3. With TWRP's file manager, go into the internal storage and delete all the files within the backup folder.
4. Download this backup:
https://onedrive.live.com/?id=19085CD12562E567%21931&cid=19085CD12562E567&group=0&parId=19085CD12562E567%21925&authkey=%21AHmuVovnpuzX0tI&action=locate
5. Extract the files from the zip and copy them over to the backup folder on the internal storage.
6. Go to Restore on TWRP and dance.
After many attempts of trying to restore from an external SD card and from just creating my own TWRP backup folder, TWRP just wouldn't see the backup until I copied and replaced. I'm glad it worked and I hope it helps anyone else who needs a restore.
Credit goes to jmreyesiii for providing the backup files and vampirefo for the rooting.

An absolutely great post! You need a special thanks because this ability to recover from catastrophe likely will encourage others to move forward with more daring mods. I feel much more secure in playing with a few ideas knowing you have the base Rom and recovery spelled out and that it actually worked (Yes, I knew how, but knowing it worked for sure is huge!)
Thanks,
Freddy999
Now if only some kind hearted dev would release a ROM....
Actually, after you root and decrypt it, and fix the cpu governor and such, and get rid of the google apps that you don't use, with the exception of the lollipop HW overlay flaw it is not a bad ROM to start with. I wiped most of the Google stuff and put in Nova launcher. Now the device is quite manageable and very fast without much further help. Here is a pretty good summary of the device for anyone who has the tools to build a ROM: http://specdevice.com/showspec.php?id=ee2d-39de-0033-c5870033c587 with the exception I can not find that the FM radio exists in the device although the hardware seems to say it is there..........
what do you mean cpu governor?

The backup file expired (or something) on OneDrive. Would you mind re-upping it somewhere? Thanks!

I partitioned my Ares 8 and now it is stuck awaiting fastboot command. Any ideas?
Can someone help me? Why does mine fail when restoring system?
My ares 8 is stuck in DNX mode and will not enter recovery, and is pretty hosed. I need a scatterfile and rom so I can flash it and use it for something besides a paperweight. Thanks 1000 times in advance!
Ahhh, after several hours of reading, I managed to get recovery back, but cannot seem to flash a rom successfully, and also my backup - says it was successful but when I reboot, it goes straight to DnX mode and I have to use a batch file to get back to recovery. But progress has been made and hopefully by today I will have it back up and running an OS
Hi, i have Nextbook Ares 8 after rooing i can't boot the device it has an error says "Your device is unable to start because the Android OS image has failed to verify" please help me to fix this problem.

Hi Im not a developer and dont know much about android i just don't know who to ask for this particular problem.
I had a ZTE Obsidian phone that wont get past the Metropcs boot screen so I did a system restore menu by holding power and the up vol button.
After going to boot menu I created a backup to my sdcard. userdata_20150101_003623.backup this is the file name I was given. To make sure I created another one and the only diffrence is trhe file extension saying backup1.
I then factory reset the phone and tried to reboot but it still has the same problem. I purchased a new phone the asus Zenfone3. I then tried to do the same thing here but restore the phone using the same backup from the ZTE but I received an error saying the backup is out of date. The zte was running on lollipop and the asus on marshmellow.
Im on windows 10. I was hoping to find away to extract my contacts and possibly the app color note with the notes I wrote in it from the backup.
Is this possible can I extract these files from a .backup to my windows 10 desktop some kind of way or can I get another zte phone and create a clone of my last one from the backup file
Greetings and welcome to assist. Do you know what format the backup was saved in ? Where you using twrp or cwm? You could use titanium backup to extract from the backup on your phone if you have root or I think assayed kitchen has the option to extract from a back up here

No I dont know what format the file is saved in. The file extension just says .backup
Where you using twrp or cwm?
Im a novice at android and developing. I dont know what these are. I used my no rooted phone from Metro Pcs (ZTE Obsidian Z820) before I factory rest it I created a backup using the factory restore system on the phone. I did not use a computer or third party apps to do this.
You could use titanium backup to extract from the backup on your phone if you have root or I think assayed kitchen has the option to extract from a back up here.
The phone was from metro pcs and not rooted. I have also downloaded the (Assayed Kitchen) program but have no idea how to use it to access the .backup file. There are no instructions for some one of my limited knowledge on android phones.

Greetings ans welcome again. It is unusual for a stock recovery to be able to make a back up that is the problem, it is only normally possible to make a backup using a custom recovery like cwm or twrp so I assumed you had done this. You can not restore a backup from a different model of phone as it is incompatible, if you copy your back up to your pc and right click it to get properties it should tell you what file extension was used. You won't be able to restore the back up to a different model of phone but may be able to extract contacts, messages, photos etc

Yea thats what I thought but wanted to verify it. Im currently trying to find the same model phone online so I can use the files.
When I click the properties button the file type is listed as "BACKUP (.backup)". I dont think there is a program that can actually read this file type at least I cant find one that does.
If there is one I would like to be able to get that kind of info off of it.
