I have developed One Click De-cripple to enable installation of non-market on the Captivate with one click. While many of you may be saying that Android Central's Sideload Wonder Machine already does this, my program will make a persistent change to enable non-market app installation without being attached to a computer. OCD was developed in Visual Studio 2010, therefore prerequisites will be that the USB drivers already be installed, that .NET 4.0 be installed, and the phone is already rooted. If you have not yet rooted your phone, I recommend "Samsung Galaxy S One Click Root" by TGA_Gunnman.
v1.0.0.2.

Wow... don't know how I missed that one. I'm sure my project is using a similar mechanism but is geared specifically for the Captivate and at this time requires that the phone already be rooted.
I used his program to root and allow non market apps yesterday. Worked great for me but alot of people had problems. So go for it maybe yours will be good for those people.

DB edit through shell isn't that difficult. and YES... another one. Apparently some people have been experiencing issues with rageagainstthecage which is what SuperOneClick relies on. OCD does not rely on this mechanism and is designed for your average person with little or no *nix, coding, or CLI skills to free their phone. Gripe all you want but I'm sure someone will find it useful.
And without further ado...
A big thank you. It worked where others failed. Totally worth it!
Does this work on Eclair, Froyo or both?
I'm already rooted and have OCLF installed but I assume that doesn't matter, right?

It wasn't a gripe, just an observation. Maybe a better alternative is for a campaign to get AT&T to uncripple the platform.
Anyway, good deal helping those that need it.

OCD was designed and tested for 2.1 Eclair but will likely work on 2.2 Froyo. My understanding is that the manual process to enable non-market apps on 2.2 is identical to 2.1. If you are running 2.2 and have tried OCD, please share your experience.

OCD should work with OCLF but has not been tested with it. OCD requires that the phone already be rooted so you are already half-way there.
Thanks dude, good work. I was tired of doing all that adb stuff !
it works
Worked like a charm....
finally got non market on my 2.2
I launch it and I get the black "Galaxy S" box but can't see anything in it but the half outline of two buttons. If the buttons have text, I can't read it.
Rooted w/ drivers installed. XP Pro SP3
Think we will get an update for it? Maybe the upcoming gingerbread upgrade will have it

We here at XDA are a minority among Android users. And not everyone wants root.
Yeah but come on so many benefits to rooting why not you know??
True but in my case I have not rooted because of the process. I do not want to redo all my settings and data and such....I am sure I am not the only one
I totally would but, its kinda tough to do that with a mac

Well then good luck with that. Personally anyone who buys a phone that's missing a feature , especially one that's mostly used for nefarious purposes really should learn to read before buying. Then again one would think; all it takes to have root is said reading and therein lies the cusp.
Wouldn't be a problem if say the rooting process was like the hero or evo hell even my former samsung epic. No data loss

This means don't buy any AT&T branded device. Hopefully sideloading happens with the Inspire. With hsupa now enabled and with this, I would lose more reason to root. Although getting rid of the bloat would be nice. I just wish we could root stock without having to downgrade.

If your phone is Stock rooted, you can always edit the settings.db file and enable side loading feature. I did it and works like a charm. I didn't want to take a chance with a custom ROM, so I updated the stock ROM with the latest HTC update and the rooted it with gingerbreak. So far so good.

try using titanium back up, that helps out alot, if u really don't wanna waste the 15min it takes to reset up ur phone, or just root it b4 setting it up, right after you buy it. sure, some rom updates will require a full wipe but its always for the better, there's just too many benefits to rooting not to want to do it. removing bloatware, ability to sideload, tethering, being able to run any of the many roms out there and the list goes on and on and on.

+1. If you're on AT&T, and have an Android phone, you are going to be missing out on all your phone could be. Even if you hack the living daylights out of a stock ROM, it won't compare to any ROM floating around here. It's not nearly as hard/bad as people think.

I have side loading without root. In fact, my Inspire is totally stock. And I've been able to side load apps from the beginning. That's one reason I don't understand this AT&T side loading business.

I sideload right on my Inspire. I have the apks on my card and choose them with any file explorer and install them. I can even install apps that require root to function. Those particular apps will install, but they won't work without root. But all apps that don't require root to function install and work just fine.
It figures... right after rooting. I like root though. I'm a control freak and I like to determine what is on my phone. Deleted all of ATTs bloarware and just darn well like playing with ROMS. I was a Linux distro sampler too for a while before settling on Fedora.
I have been spending a lot of time reading about Android security in this forum and realize I've made mistakes.
With my new nexus 5, I have recently corrected most of them. With my last phone, I'm sad to say that I was asking to give my data away.
Here are my new practices...
1. After rooting, I used Boot Unlocker to re-lock the bootloader.
2. I am running the stock recovery and when I need to flash something or nandroid backup, I flash TWRP temporary.
3. I use Tasker to turn USB Debugging off when I disconnect from my home network.
4. I do not share passwords between apps/websites. I use LastPass to generate unique, random, strong passwords.
5. I use 2 step verification whenever possible.
6. I'm in physical control of my phone whenever I leave my house.
But... I have not paid attention to the permissions my apps ask for. Is there an app that shows a permission, and then list the apps that have that permission? I do have Lookout installed, and it's sister app Add Network Detector and all scan OK, but I'm looking for more.
Also, if anyone has any other recommendations, I'd like to hear them. I'm not a fanatic, but in this age of identity theft, I do want to have my eyes open.

I can only second that. If you refuse to use Xprivacy through installing Xposed Framework first, you'll NEVER get to the core of all settings with any other app. Asking for a "best way to review permissions" here but refusing to do something to get there is like not wanting to die but refusing to eat. In short: Get XPrivacy. You won't regret it, believe me.

I didn't want to get into exposed framework because the reason I own a nexus is to flash custom roms.
On my GN, I used AOKP.
But, you have peaked my interest, and I'm going to give it a try. I was enjoying running ART, which is not available in OmniROM yet. Can you use it with exposed modules?

Well, as far as I know, the main developer @M66B is working hard on it to get it to that state. To make sure and get all the latest and greatest information of support, have a peak at the Official Xprivacy Thread. Also, you should bookmark the Xprivacy Changelog to always know what was changed. And to be honest: I'm happy you like AOKP as much as I do. Always keep it gangsta.

First of all, please don't talk to me like a kid. Even if your english might not be that good, try to keep it in straight forward language and as simple as possible. In order to use Xprivacy, you NEED the Xposed Framework. Both of them are an awesome invention, I even bought Xprivacy. Now, what is your exact problem with the Xposed Framework? You want to control your apps permissions? Well, having the Xposed Framework installed and adding Xprivacy to it, is the BEST and EASIEST way there is. Point made. If you refuse to because your ego is too big to make a NANDROID first and try it out, then please don't bother people with asking any longer. You can probably feel the stress in my "voice"? Your behavior is uncool.

OK. I gave xposed a try and went back to omnirom. Omni has some pretty nice security features right now, but when their new google-free dialer and some of the other mods they are planning come out, it will be the way to go for the security/privacy minded android user like me.
what about luckypatcher to remove permission ? is this apk reliable ?
Now that I have rooted my phone I don't know what to do with it. It feels like I have rooted the phone for no reason what so ever. What are some things that you can do with this particular phone noe that I have root access. I want do fun things. I have not been able to find much on your device. I did find the thread HERE. Also you can look into Xposed. With Xposed Framework , and Xposed Modules you should have some options as to customizing your device.
Can you please tell me more about this software. What can I do with it. I guess I should be a little more specific I want to do things like watch movies on my phone for free?

In the Link I provided is an FAQ. Also there is a separate thread for each of the Xposed steps, and Modules. The Modules themselves have a breakdown of how to use them, and what they do on the corresponding threads for each module. Since there are so many modules, and they are so varied it would be very difficult to give you a rundown of them. Suffice it to say you can alter many, many aspects of Android.
As to the second part of your question. I will direct you to THIS THREAD.
Ok, if anyone's going to recommend rooting, just move on to another thread please. I can't root, I like my Final Fantasy games and want to actually be able to play them. Anyway, I got NVIDIA's dev drivers for my PC, and on the PC side the application is showing Helium as being activated on the tablet, but the tablet side doesn't seem to agree. Anyone else had any luck with it? Any alternatives that DON'T require root?
An other alternative? An open mind without no-sense fears.

Final Fantasy Dimensions and Final Fantasy 6 do not work on rooted devices. Not even if you use root cloak. I already tried it. I already said if you're going to say "root anyway" to just move on instead of trolling. If you want to be insulting, I have no problem using the report button.

What is your goal? Syncing, backing up regularly or a one time transfer of app data to the shield?
Regular backups at this point. I rooted it before to get the files synced over but I had to unroot so those games would work, couldn't find any workable countermeasures. Annoying but such is life

Only solution I could offer is to set up a custom recovery and backup through there instead. Have you contact helium's support to see if they have any ideas?
Yeah, waiting to hear back. Tried from my Win8 laptop and my Win7 desktop, same issue, hopefully it's something they can fix. I was hoping there were some other options out there, or maybe some other option for spoofing Squaresoft's root detection, but if there isn't, then there isn't. Being able to root would make life SO much easier.
