I've spent most of my "Captivate" time with stock I9000 roms but have recently returned to stock because of audio problems while making calls.
I used the "one-click" stock rom flash, rooted the phone, downloaded Root Explorer, TiBackup, and Rom Manager. I've modded the setup.db file to allow side-loading and installed .apk files I had on my extsd, and I deleted bloatware.
So, why won't the stock browser allow me to download an .apk file? I get an error message that says "Cannot download. Content not supported on this phone." I remember a setting somewhere "Allow browser to download all content", but now I can't find it. I suspect it was part of the I9000 rom.
Opera Mini downloads them, but I prefer the stock browser. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
I dont know, mine downloads them fine and saves them to /sdcard/downloads. I'm on stock ROM, I've never changed ROMs. I have rooted, modded settings.db to allow non-market apps, and have used TiBackup to wipe out the AT&T bloatware.
I found the setting. It was in Astro's settings. I could have sworn I looked there before.
Oh well. At least I found it.
@dc41 thanks bruh, i was lookin for the same thing
I have this same problem on stock rooted 2.2. Where are Astro's settings? I don't have Astro file manager installed if that's what you're referencing.
Thanks.

I know this is probably a very basic question, but I'm a noob. When you install a new rom, how do you recover your apps?
I generally back them up with App Manager, but then I have to re-install each app individually. Is there any way to just recover them after flashing a new rom without having to install each one individually?
Thanks.
I use Astro to back up my apps. When installing a new ROM, just install Astro, go to menu - app management and you can easily get them all back.
I tried 'backup for root users' and it was a big FAIL. Does not seem to work at all ...
The Astro file manager app can be used to back and restore all your apps at once I believe. After installing a new ROM, grab Astro from the Market and it should read your backed up apps on the sdcard, which you can then restore all at once.
I haven't done this myself but I've read that it shoulr work the way I've described.
Awesome, I'll give Astro a try.
so i'm dumb i know but i deleted my messaging app from my samsung captivate (2.1 rooted). I've tried a few different times to find mms.apk but none of them want to install. i usually will put them in my sdcard folder and try and open them with package installer but it will just say application not installed. I've been using handcent (which is great) but it will only receive sms but not mms. does anyone know how to install mms.apk or just a way to get handcent to do mms without it.
thanks
edit: tried adb install through terminal comes up with the error install_failed_dexopt i know i have enough memory for the app so i presume it means that the file im trying to install is corrupted but i'm pretty new to it so im clueless.
Please tell me if this is feasable.
I was retarded and never bothered to Root my incredible when it was possible to do on 2.1
It obviously isn't possible using revoked/simple root/ or any other methods after 2.2 (not yet anyway)
I would like to remove the stock annoying apps(amazon, cityid, etc) from my phone entirely/rename them, but I can't. I can't because without root access you cant rename/delete files from the system/app folder on the phone, and you cannot force an unintall of these programs.
I recently downloaded the update.zip file from google for the 2.2 update(since I didnt want to wait for the OTA update). Do you think it is possible to remove the apk's you dont want from the stock 2.2 google rom since they are located in the same folder system/app within the rom files. Then rezip the rom files and reflash your phone with the edited rom files which would not include all this bloat crap stuff I do not want?
I cant think of a reason why it wouldn't work / be possible??? thoughts?

Since you are using the stock recovery to install a stock ROM/update that is signed by them with keys the that you don't have, I would say NO. You'll have to get root first and install a customer recovery in order to install custom ROMs. If you modify the stock ROM/update and resign it, it will be a custom ROM/update at that point.

Ty for the response.
That is exactly the issue I ran into..
I wasnt able to figure out how to get past their md5/signed file check.
I am not sure if the bootlader/recovery console checks the file size or contents. What I tried to do originally was extract all the files in the update.zip package and make my changes then rezip them. Obviously this method failed because I had to repackage it and as a result it was no longer signed.
What I then tried was to edit the actual update.zip without extracting first. I figured this way the file itself would still be signed and I would be able to use it.
It generated a different error than I had seen the first time, but ultimately failed the check again..
Made me sad. I really wanted to get rid of all that crap. VZnavigator process is a memory hog. I dont need it at all, not with google maps which comes stock on the phone.. And to add to that, you cant even kill the process because as soon as you do it just starts again... So.. GG verizon
At this point I really only have two options..
1) Wait for 2.2 stock rom to be rooted. If this ever happens, I have faith that it will.
2.) Revert back to 2.1, s-off perma root and then manually load in 2.2 over that..
Have you tried that androot.apk? I was under the assumption that it was "universal".

I have not. What I did instead was use 3.2 unrevoked which works on 2.2
I am not sure what androot.apk is I will look into it out of curiosity.

Hi guys.
I've been scouring the web for the stock browser apk for either the stock rom or the gb leak to no avail.
I'm a total android noob, but know enough about *nix to usually know what I'm doing so far.
I tried installing browser.apk 2.3.4 from the sgs2 which functioned after some permissions fiddling, but had a couple bugs, so I want to go back to the previous browser.
I tried recovering it with Titanium Backup, but its just been FCing, and failing to install when I attempt.
I've tried a couple other apk's I've found for other devices, but have had FC issues with all of them so far.
I'm at the point of being ready to switch to Dolphin if I can't get it to work, but the stock browser worked pretty well for me, so at least wanted to have a working copy I could use if I ever needed to.
I'm running the leaked GB rom, and everything else is pretty much stock. from that.
Does anyone have a dump from the GB rom, or know of a browser apk that will work for me? If not, my next step will be to decompile the GB files and try pulling the browser out of there, but that will have to wait until I get home from work.
Download a rom from cwm section of the bible. Open the zip file, go to system, app, and pull the browser.apk

I just recently treated myself to an ex-demo unit of this gloriously impractical tablet for reading digital comics on and successfully used odin to flash the proper stock firmware to get rid of demo mode.
I'm quite tempted by the custom roms available, but I'd like to keep some of the stock samsung apps, especially sketchbook for galaxy, and I'm wondering what everyone's opinion on the easiest or best way to do it is.
Do I need to install titanium backup and backup the apps I want to keep? Can I just extract the .apk files I want from the stock firmware image which I still have?
Thanks
IMO the easiest way is:
Step 1 - stay stock, do an nandroid backup in TWRP.
Step 2 - Install Titanium . . do a full backup and debloat by freezing apps and services to get rid of lag and unwanted apps . . if you end up needing it later, defrost.
Step 3 - Install Xposed Framework, and begin experimenting with custom xposed modules to add additional features.
Step 4 - install other root applications to taste.
thanks, i may ultimately end up doing that, but i would like to try different roms as there are a lot of things about the GUI that i don't like on this tablet, and i'm confident enough that i can always get back to stock using odin.
i went ahead and installed cyanogenmod and reinstalled sketchbook from a .apk i created with es file explorer, seems to have worked fine.
Glad it works, sorry that I misunderstood.
I had sketchbook too, but after flashing cm 12 I tried artflow, never went back.

I use ES File Explorer. It has a Root explorer function which allows you to backup apps and their data. After backing up the stock app and data I have been able to transfer the app to other devices including custom roms like slimkat on my i9100. One app I've had success with is Navigon. I haven't tried sketchbook, because my tablet isn't rooted yet, but it might work. The backup directory can be customised, but its default location is on internal sd. This process of backing up leaves you with the APK and a zip file with your data. You can install ES File Explorer on the new device/rom and put the APK and zip file back into the backup directory. Then go to backup in root explorer tab of File Explorer and restore app with data, or just app. This may work.
Yep I used es file explorer in the end, and it worked. There seems to be no end to what es can do, i don't know why it doesn't appear on every list of essential/most useful droid apps. Just figured out a couple of days ago that you can use it to stream music wirelessly from a shared folder on your network. I've installed if as a system app on my phone with titanium backup and removed the stock file explorer.
