OK, I've searched for days to try and find a fast, stable, sense-ui (Theme-wise) ROM that works on the HTC Hero. I've found tons of ROMS for the G1, I've tried the CyangenMod 6 ROM, I've spent hours searching for a good ROM. CM6 is a bit faster, but occasionally it will hang. (A bit better than stock 2.1) I don't like that a lot of apps don't work (After downloading an app and installing it, you can't click open or find it in your apps list) and I don't like that the fact that you can't group your contacts or have the Sprint/HTC widgets work. (The only widgets I use are the clock and the email, messages, and voice mail widgets that show how many you received.
Please let me know if you use one like that you can recommend.

For a good sense UI rom I would go with Zen rom. You can find it here.
I've been using this rom NFX-Hero 2.2.1 by nfinitefx45. After playing with other roms and the cyanogen ones, i've come back to this one. I've been running this for a couple weeks and it's pretty smooth and stable. So give it a try. Also, nfinitefx45 is one dedicated developer, he actually visits the thread often and help with answering questions, solving problems/bugs!

+1 nfinite's roms are put together well and are fast yet also solid.
I'm using the cyanogen rom. CM6. It's actually running android 2.2 (froyo) instead of 2.1, and I think it has a better keyboard and runs very well. I use the "digital clock widget", and the weather and "news and weather" widget, I think both are available in the Market, but News and weather came with the rom. I miss the bookmarks and calendar widgets from Sense, but its not worth going back. As far as voicmail goes I'm using google voice to handle my it, and there are widgets for it too.

I use CM6 as well, and prefer it over any sense rom but the OP wanted sense so I thought I'd humor myself
The CM6 with CyanogenSense theme looks and feels like my stock Hero, but runs way faster and has a better battery life. Zen makes a great rom, bit imo the CM6 is the way to go.

I've decided to try making a theme using the tutorial thread number 667951. (I can't post links yet I don't think, so again I'll just use this work around.) That being said, I've decided to stick with NFX-HERO for my ROM since the only thing wrong with it is the boot loop issue which I'm going to try starting from scratch to fix it today. So, the tutorial says that a good starting point for a theme would be to get an existing compatible theme and modify that one. (Great idea in my opinion. I've done this in the past with other phones I had.) Does anyone have an idea of a theme that would be useful for me to start off with? I want to change a lot of things on the phone, so the more intricate the theme is, probably the better.
Also, on a side note, if I remember correctly this thread had 3 pages before the site went down. I'm not sure why it was truncated. If any mods know why, please let me know.

We lost about 2 days posts when the site crashed
i used a theme called blue echo to learn where most things go. and in his rom there is a great vending apk that has the market themed as well. then i took a dialer from one of godzen's and moved it all to compare to my stock 2.1 files and made it work with a rom i am currently running. im just now getting into looking at the apps like clock etc but that was a good start for me since there is alot covered there.
OK, let me ask you this. It'll clear up some things I need to know on compatibility. What makes a theme compatible with one ROM and not another? Likewise, what makes an app compatible with one ROM and not another? Is it the structure? If so, how? I'm a computer programmer, but even though android phones are quite similar to a Linux system on a PC, I'm still not sure if I understand the compatibility issues behind themes.
Also, just so I don't have to post again to ask this in case it's relevant, are Blue Echo and GodZen's dialer compatible with NFX? I downloaded them, but it never said anything about NFX. Is NFX similar to Sprint's 2.1 in the sense that it will run any themes I make for NFX?
well the Rom im using is mostly stock so the framework and htc.resource files are the same. for say CM6 (and i havent looked into it just a example) may have say the status bar grey and i want black. in the stock i would change the statusbar_bkg file in the framework.apk folder but in CM6 it may be in the same plae with a different name or the same name in a different place or just non existent all together. as for if they are compatible the only way to know is to try. the only way to know for sure is to open them compare and replace what you need in the correct order. also i use metamorph to apply themes. you can find it in the market. but the Vending.apk theme must be pushed with adb for some reason or it will crash the market.
matter of fact now that i think of it, the Rom im using is about to incorporate NFX. go here and you an see my post where i put what i transfereed over and they should work as i think NFX is mostly a stock (so to speak) Rom.

You are using a Hero, right? Not a G1? That would explain the boot loop issue you had with NFX.
NFX-HERO was listed in the Hero ROMs section. You sure it's only for G1? Would another phone's ROM actually even flash to a different phone properly? I mean it works, but with boot loops.
Yes they will but may it may not work. And I'm sure that Rom is for a hero and I would flash over and look for myself but I have been threw like 5 Rom's today and just got it back normal lol.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
OK, so today I had a chance to wipe and flash the NFX-HERO ROM again. Now the phone seems a bit more stable. I can boot it and it boots all the way up fine and I can click "Shutdown Phone" and have it shutdown without freezing and rebooting, but now right now I've spotted only one flaw. When I use the phone in disk drive mode, but then pull the USB out of the phone without switching it back to charge only, and it freezes and reboots on me. (This happened last time.) I've also noticed that the phone gets increasingly more unstable as time goes on, so I wouldn't doubt that it would do this even more later on.
Correction, no matter what I do, to remove the USB when I use it as a disk drive, the phone freezes and reboots.
Update again: I decided to use RegawMod instead. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=661991) It's super fast, no bugs from what I can see, highly compatible, and it looks slick! I even used a mod to turn my dialer pink. lol I can see this being my ROM of choice for a long time. The only thing I didn't like was that it was lacking the Google Navigation tools, so I installed GoogleApps.apk (If you're looking for this file, just Google GoogleApps.apk) from another ROM and rebooted me phone (So it would show up) and then it worked just fine. I'm not sure why it isn't showing local listings for destinations first, but that may be just because it didn't catch the GPS location right off the bat. I did set my location settings to being shared.
There is a pink theme in 2.1 catalog if i remember right. If you like pink that might be a good start for you to move the files around to see how they are built.

Haha... I see how that can be misinterpreted.
Yeah, NFX is a Hero ROM, I was asking if you were trying to flash it on a G1, because if you were, it wouldn't work.
I like Regawmod 2.1. Fast with a nice dark theme. Based off of damage control. Just my two cents.

Hey everyone, i did some extensive searching in this general section and didnt see my specific problem, so if theres a thread open on it already, please (kindly) point me to it.
I'm having an interesting problem where sometimes, some of my widgets are not displaying properly. So far its been Beautiful Widgets Home, Arti's Contact widget (4x4), and the AudioGuru profile widget that have done it.
PowerControl, TaskPanel X, and BatteryLife have always been fine, and shortcuts have been fine. I attached some pics of Beautiful home and audio guru. For Beautiful Widgets Home, it should be quite obvious, for AudioGuru those buttons are half the size they should be.
I cant pinpoint when it happens, although the last time it did, it was after i closed the stock browser.
Lastly, rebooting the phone fixes it, trashing the widgets and re-adding them fixes it, and connecting to my laptop via usb and mounting the sd-card fixes it.
I'd like to know whats causing it. Has anyone else experienced this bug with any of their widgets?
safe to say it's a bug with the launcher, this sometimes happens on custom launchers and it's a quick fix by just restarting your custom launcher.
usually it happens when the phone tries to rotate and then gets confused so the widgets get all screwed up. Shouldn't happen that often though.
i have it happen on LP everyonce and a while if i'm in a landscape game and then go back to my portrait homescreen, but i'd say 95% of the time they fix themselves.
Well I appreciate the insight but I'm not on a custom launcher which is sorta why it bothers me a bit more.

you might be right but I'm not so sure its gbread per say. as an update, since my last post, it was doing it at random times. i could not reproduce the issue intentionally but it happened one to two times a day.
I started toying with LauncherPro yesterday and was impressed so earlier this morning I bought Launcher Pro Plus. it hasnt happened once while using it. So I've recreated every screen i had on the stock launcher in LauncherPro Plus (and then some) with no issues.
The phone has only been release less than a month. I think that devs are still getting to grips or updating existing apps to be compatible with GB.
i find it hard to believe that widgets running on the stock launcher within gingerbread might mess up due to the dev needing to change the code to be gb compatible yet those same ones running within launcherpro are just fine. It has to be something specific to the launcher itself and not gb the os and third party. although i haven't spent any time testing just the widgets that come out of the box to see if its 3rd party only that's having the problem
Hi guys,
Since the AOSP ICS builds I noticed that when the Phone app is not in memory it opens very slow. The next time you open it is almost instant. I thought that it would be fixed in the OTA, and even if it is a little faster it is still quite frustrating sometimes. Tried many roms/kernels and even if in some configurations it open faster, it is still slow.
Since I dont use the Phone that much, almost every time that I use it it is not in the memory and it is slow. Anyone has an idea to fix it, like a hack to make it persistent in the memory?
Thanks.
Bump. Is there a way to keep it in memory ? Maybe giving it a special permission like the launcher will help. I will take a look...
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
This is my only problem with ICS - I've tried a few memory management programs to see if I could keep the dialer, or contacts, persistent in memory, but nothing works. When I launch the dialer, the application 'Contacts' ('com.android.contacts', which seems to be the new ICS 'People' app) is shown as an 'active application' in my 'SystemPanel' app off the Market, and as long as that stays as an active app then the dialer usually re-launches straight away when pressed the next time, sometimes with only a small bit of lag if the screen has been of for a minute or two. When the 'contacts' app is shut down by the system, I guess when you open other apps up that need memory, the dialer lags again.
All the time, the process 'Phone' ('com.android.phone') seem to be sitting there as an 'Internal System Process' and seems to be persistent, but that alone doesn't make the dialer launch quickly, the 'contacts' app needs to be active as well.
My observations, but I am not a techie.
actually i recently read a thread here on XDA that addressed this issue. it involved a command on the terminal that allowed you to prioritize certain apps. too bad i can't seem to find that thread anymore!
found it! it involves using the Renice command. you can run it as an init.d script
or demo it out using the prioritzer apk (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1224125) kind thanks to this developer for creating the app. it works great!
all i did, was set the phone and contact app to -20 priority. it loads MUCH faster... try it and report back.
here are more links related to renice

Great, thanks for coming back on this, this sounds interesting - I'm not rooted at the moment, I will look into doing this as I think it would be worth it just to sort out this problem, as well as the other benefits. I will report back with my results!
I decided not to root in order to fix this, I've gone a different way with the dialer - exDialer has a polished looking ICS theme and I installed that to see how it would work, and it works great. It opens up consistently quicker, maybe due to the 'Keep in Memory' option that it has. I haven't had one laggy episode with it yet. Most other third party dialers don't look so good but this has a great ICS look, has smart dial, and a great call history function, and it's free (or you can donate as I did). Worth a look for anyone having similar problems.
I would still go back to the stock dialer if it worked properly, maybe a future update will solve this without having to root.

SPEED UP PHONE AND BOOST PERFORMANCE. On the new ics leak.
You must be rooted to do some of these tweeks..
1. Use titanium backup or the app of your choice to freeze or uninstall unwanted or misbehaving apps. You can find a list of apps that come preinstalled (bloatware) that is known to be safe to freeze or uninstall by searching the dev section.
2. Uninstall any and all task killers or task managers. After research I find they do more harm and slow down performance and kill battery life than they help. By freezing or uninstalling misbehaving apps in step one you don't have to worry about apps running in the background eating up your data. And besides ics has a really nice data manager built in.
3. Install apex launcher from the market. I can't explain why but using this launcher with ics instead of the stock tw launcher sped my phone up considerably and totally eliminated that little bit of lag that was in it when exiting apps and scrolling screens. Not to mention apex has a lot of freeking really cool features you can't do with the stock tw launcher. Like add another shortcut icon on the dock bar and the ability to scroll 5 dock bars full of shortcuts you can add. And the home screen allows for another whole row of icons and much much more. But best of it made my phone ALOT FREAKIN FASTER....
BATTERY DRAIN ISSUES.
I found going from gingerbread to ics was a bigger strain on my battery a way bigger strain. So far this trick has helped a lot but I'm still looking for other ways to go with this to improve it even more. So if you have any tricks up your sleeve feel free to post please. So here is what I've found so far...
I used rom manager from the market but I'm sure there are other free apps that can do this again far as I know you need to be rooted to do this...
1. Wipe battery stats. After installing any new rom or even updating an existing you should always wipe battery stats. This helped my phone tremendousley.
2. Find a app that monitors your battery stats. I use badass battery monitory. I don't like the name but it will tell you which apps are draining your battery and allow you to make necasarry changes. There is a free version on the market but I'm using the paid one.
I posted this info I've learned to maybe help someone else. It helped my phone a bunch but each phone is different and what works for one may not for another so I make no guarantees. For info on rooting see the link at the beginning of this thread it worked for me. Anyone that has learned other tweaks please post. And if this is in the wrong section I'm sorry. I just started using the app and not my pc to access xda and I'm trying to figure the app out still which is laid out weird and the search option just plain sux...

Are you using any battery saving apps?
and also ICS task manager does not do anything when you swipe the apps of, I am using 360 Launcher it's as smooth as ever, it has build in cleaner that brings the memory usage to 29-31% that is with major apps I use excluded from clean. On the other hand not using anything will have your ROM running at about 380M at boot and 450M+ then on after you use something, even after freezing things.
P.S. I agree not using another task killers, but the one in 360 it's just like the build in one in the ROM, when you press clean memory, just has a widget.
! One more suggestion, using System Turner or Rom Toolbox, remove apps from start up, that you don;t need at boot.
When I said task killers of course i meant those you download from the market not the stock one on the phone. Sorry of I confused anyone but I did not remove the stock one but the two I had downloaded and installed from the market. I have rom manager and I'll try that tip thanks and sorry for the confusion

Hi all,
I have had my Nexus 5 phone for a few weeks now and I love it.
Before that I owned a Galaxy S2, running on CM10.2 with Dorimanx Kernel with Nova Launcher.
I really love the N5, it really is a beast and answers most of my expectations.
However, I have recently been confronted to a problem : my homescreen widgets are not syncing/updating anymore...
Not much of them though :
- Beautiful Weather 4 x 2
- Stock Agenda 2 x 3 redimensioned at 4 x 3
- Today 4 x 2 redimensioned at 4 x 3
Before that I also tried on my N5 : Dashclock + Widget Locker and some extensions for Whatsapp, Google Music, Hangouts, Gmail, etc...
Lockscreen widgets worked fine and were correctly synced and updated.
I have noticed that my homescreen widgets are only updated once : when I set them up or when I turn on my device. After a few seconds they stop updating. Even the update button in some widgets does not work.
This is really annoying as I really like my N5 and this is really bothering me.
I have searched through all the web and through the forum and I have not found anything useful. I have tried uninstalling all these apps and reinstall them. I have tried installing them one at a time and it does not work.
I have seen your N5 homescreens in the forum and it makes me jealous as they are really looking good and rely on synced widgets.
Has anyone got a clue ?
Thank you all very much.
Marc
Hi all,
Just a quick update : I have installed Nova Launcher 2.3 Beta and all my widgets seem to be working fine in Nova Environment. Well synced and updated.
Has anyone kept the default Nexus 5 launcher (Google Experience) and observed the widgets are not syncing ?
I have tried to reset the Launcher by going into the app details and stopping the app and resetting the cache and data. It still does not work.
The weird thing is that I seem to be the only one experiencing this issue as I really have not found the problem stated elsewhere. Or maybe for other devices and particular widgets but I have tried all the solutions and none worked.
Are you running Google Experience on your N5 and are you having these issues ?
I do like Google Experience feel and is there another way to reset it ?
Do you have any clues on how to debug this ?
Otherwise, do you know where I can post this problem and find help ? Is there any Google support for this Launcher ?
Thank you all so much for your help !!

EDIT
After fighting that problem for 2 days without any luck (tried restarts, reinstalled beautiful widgts, widgetoid etc.) the problem is gone now after posting yesterday into this thread.
Nice.
The only thing that changed since then is that i deinstalled tapatalk - but I can hardly reproduce the problem or solution...
Really a small chance but maybe the OP has tapatalk installed too?
Hi licht,
Thanks for your feedback though you are right, I don't know how I can reproduce your solution.
And by the way, after a successful day on Nova the problem has appeared on Nova now !!
So I guess this isn't launcher related...
There is a pb with Kit Kat somewhere...
How could I debug this ? What is the process responsible for updating home screen widgets ?
Thanks to the community !
OK I've had this problem too.. Very occasionally.. But it's happened in holo launcher..
A restart fixes it..
And I do have tapatalk installed too though am not sure it's related

Hmmmm don't care for nova, unnecessary memory usage. I thought you said earlier it wasn't a launcher issue?
Will try to solve it tomorrow, perhaps it is as simple as wiping cache? Will keep you guys' updated.
You are right to point that out because I thought it was also not t refreshing on Nova. But it actually did, and for some time now it runs fine.
Thanks for trying it. I'll be checking your results in here.

Exited it and now my widgets refresh. Can anyone explain how this app would get in the way of the widgets updating?? =\
problem solved
My nexus 5 block sync all widgets:
The solution is, deinstall phone weaver!
Sören
What is Phone Weaver ? Is it a specific program ? Because I don't have it.
I thought it was the stopwatch app i had running causing widget freezes, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Widgets are still refusing to refresh. Will flash 4.4.2 (clean install) hopefully that helps.
Issue is well documented here http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=28216
See if this works for you guys https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/nexus/uu27aDrcwFs/9L9JRo6kXqkJ

I've found solution which works for me. I hope it could help others as well.
all that I did is ran in CMD:
adb shell am start -n com.google.android.setupwizard/.SetupWizardTestActivity
after this nexus asked for locale and name again. Then I've put back my widgets.
I had no problems about a week.
Please, notice that it could be done at your own risk!
I tried the above and it seems to be working so far. Post your results =]
So i have found a temporary fix without needing to reboot.
I used https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.systempanel.r1 to kill all processes and tasks, the widgets start to work! The bug will occur again most likely.
Now when the bug does occur again i just have to go kill the process/task 1 by 1 to figure out which one resets the widgets, probably google search (launcher)
This must confirm there is conflict with ram! any insight?!
Anyone figured out a solution that does not involve booting, restarting the phone or manually running an app? that is no permanent fix. and this is extremely disappointing.
