The past few months I've fallen in love with the Dell Streak but it's release kept on getting pushed back. I bought the Captivate on a whim because I got bored with the 3Gs (owned all iPhones but not the i4). Hopefully AT&T will have some in stores before my return window ends for the Captivate. The Captivate does have better hardware all around, minus the camera flash and front cam, but the Streak's 5 inch screen is my main attraction to it. I need some hands on time with it
Don't want to sound harsh, but I came in here to research and discuss Samnsung Captivate.
Sorry bud I thought this was a Captivate forum? 5 inch LCD got nothing on a 4 inch Super AMOLED.
Besides 5 inch is too clumpsy to hold. 4 inch is the PERFECT size to fit on your hand.
Holy **** this is dumb, where else should I post this? Streak General, maybe, but I'm highlighting the positives of the Captivate as well.
The streak has a SMALLER battery(relative) and a screen thats some 20% bigger or so. Even though the captivate supposedly has the best battery of any smartphone on the market, I still feel it dies way too fast.
If for nothing else, you can't friggin use these phones for long. At least the captivate tries to be super batt efficient. Froyo did wonders for the Evo, lets hope it does the same for the captivate...
Oh ya, and who knows if the streak will ever get froyo
I've owned every iPhone since the first (even the i4 for 3 weeks) and tried out the Evo 4g for a month and absolutely loved Android. Returned the Evo within the 30 days and bought the captivate. While it does have its bugs (lag and GPS), it still is a great phone. Out of the box, I don't think it would be noob-friendly like the iPhones are, because you really have to tinker around to get it working up to speed.
Now the Dell streak, WOULD be great if it came out in time. But now, the hardware AND software is dated. 2.1 was leaked for it, but that may be the last official software update Dell may release for it. The community behind the Streak may be lacking because its only coming out (so far) on AT&T, while the Samsung Galaxy S phones is a literally a worldwide release. Therefore, the hacking community may be slim - thats one reason why I love the Galaxy S, it really has great support from the community and even Samsung is listening to the people now.
Streak:
+ Large screen, great for viewing web, movies, etc
+ Aesthetically looks great (it looks like a larger version of the Captivate)
+ The GPS probably works
- Too large to comfortably hold with one hand or use for calling
- Compared to SGS, slower CPU and GPU
- Screen pales in comparison to Super AMOLED and Retinal Display
- 1.6 Stock loaded, 2.1 beta leaked, but no official release date
- Dell Android UI = UGLY
So, no, I wont be jumping ship, but I do want to play with it. ATT store did not have any in yesterday
Well put, Andy. I was once extremely interested in the Streak too. Now it is second fiddles to the GS, DROID X, and Droid Incredible.

The op is discussing the captivate. Whether to keep it or not. Why not go post something like this in one of the ip4 vs cap threads and see how far that gets you? Ease up man.
To the op, I'm getting the captivate for the same reason I got the fuze, lots people in the community. The phone is sold worldwide. Itss the first high end android phone on ma bell, one of the best harware wise period. Keep the beast.

I think it's a valid question and this is the right forum for it.
I won't be switching to the streak. I like the galaxy screen too much to switch to the streak. Also,i feel that a five inch screen is really stretching that wvga resolution too far. I read the streak is also shipping with android 1.6. That is a deal breaker and a half for me.
I have owned almost every current android. While each is unique my experience summed up goes like this. N1: too many screen problems, early updates, small app storage. Droid: the phone that started it all. Eris: junk, Droid Incredible: great phone great II decent app storage, gaming capabilities lower due to snapdragon. Droid X: great overall, great build quality, great amount of app storage(8gb), decongestant most powerful phone made CPu,GPU wise, awesome screen. Gets better with use. Samsung galaxy S: overall most powerful android phone available, great foe gaming, unfortunately not on Verizon yet, fantastic screen. By the time u are able to get the streak it will b way outdated with crap II. Stick with what u got. Motor will b bringing a new phone with OMAP 4 to Verizon this fall it will be the only thing that will compare to SGS power user wise. Well that's a short synopsis of my experience.

I too thought the Streak was interesting - 9 months ago. Now it is dated. As mentioned already, it is to big to be hand held phone, it is sold at full price but locked to AT&T, and the hardware and shipping OS are old.
If I want a phone that is to big to use as a phone, then I will get a tablet with 3G, and wear a BT headset all the time.
Oh, and rumor is that Samsung will be showing off some new tablets in the upcoming weeks.
I totally forgot about the community aspect between the streak and captivate. I already put the JM5 EURO GS on my captivate and there's many more projects GS users are working on. You can just take a look at ask the activity on the I9000, vibrant and captivate forums VS the streak's.

I own both the Captivate and Streak. Streak is great for real estate space but not so great as a phone. I use the Streak now as a replacement for my archos 5 for surfing on the couch or bed. The Captivate is the day to day phone.
I think I'm going to get the Streak in a couple months and have both my Captivate and the Streak. Had the Streak come out a month or so ago, I would have had one. It seriously takes this long to release basically the same phone across the pond? I could even see if they'd updated to 2.2 in that time, but its still running 1.6. And that makes me wonder if and when they will update to Gingerbread. At least with the Captivate I know Samsung will get me to 2.2 in a timely manner.
The only reason I'm still even considering trading is because of the pentile screen on the SGS, BUT the pixel density on the Streak sucks anyway, so *shrug*.
Just to let you know, there are multiple websites posting that Dell is going to be shipping the Streak with Froyo instead of 1.6. I haven't seen any updated benchmarks, but I am sure they'll be around what the Nexus One can get.

no, it still ships with 1.6 and froyo is only RUMORED to be released by Dell (and skipping Eclair), but at an unknown date - could be months off.

Enough said.
I love my Captivate, I looked at the I Phone4 they were side by side at the AT&T atore and held it played around a bit on it but I was already sold on the Captivate, I researched it for a while. It isn't Noob friendly, electronics no longer come with a user manual worth a dime but once I downloaded the pdf I played with it night and day. I lurked on Android Forums, and here to learn as much as I could. I love playing with gadgets that are pretty much idiot pfoof and I think the Samsug pretty much is. I've only had it 3 weeks and I have it tweaked to my liking for now. All the AT&T crapware is off of it as well as some other bugs that are also gone thanks to BuglessPete's Unleash the Beast Rom/Tool. I wouldn't by Dell no way, imo, they make an inferior product these days. I would feel uncomfortable with a 5" screen, the I4 is too small and this Samsung is the perfect size. Plus, the Hummingbird processor is lightning fast and there is so much available as far as tweaks go in these forums this phone will be quite fun to mess around with for quite some time.
The big screen is nice I guess (too big imho), but Dell clearly does not seem to be pulling out their A-game for this phone, so even if I needed/wanted a phone with that much real estate it'd be an awfully tough sell.
Do not buy:
- has 30fps cap issue like the evo
- very low benchmark scores.
- android 1.6 with slow updates.
- little to no dev support.
Dell made so many mistakes with the device launch it is just sad.
Currently have an iPhone 4 for a personal phone, and I'll be getting a new phone for work. I'm deciding what I should order. My work only deals with AT&T or Verizon. I personally am fine with either network. I've never had problems with AT&T. Phone choices are basically the Captivate, the droid 2 and the droid x.
I am leaning toward the Captivate as I'm not so sure I'd like the physical keyboard on the droid 2, and the droid x screen may be a bit to large to be comfortable.
Any thoughts? UI wise I'm not set on either the Motorola or Samsung UI, all of the phones also have around the same specs as far as I know.
Go for the Captivate, but if you're looking for reliability as far as the network goes, get a Droid X
Like I said AT&T is not bad for me. At&t network is faster, although higher latency, and I can talk and use internet at the same time, so I'm fine with it.
i would also go for the captivate.
Captivate hands down. Droid X is too large.
Or get the Fascinate for Verizon when it comes.
Hi, Im getting tired of my iPhone 4 and I have a upgrade available so what verizon phone should i get?
The droid incredible 2, droid charge, Droid x2, (wait for the samsung galaxy S2?) or get the HTC thunderbolt.
I just cant decide and my soul is slowly dieing inside because of the "staleness".
Thanks
I'd personally wait for the Droid 3, as that thing looks like a Droid X with a physical keyboard. But if you really cannot wait, I'd suggest the Incredible 2. The Charge is just too expensive, and the Droid X2 doesn't really offer much besides the screen real estate. Thunderbolt is pretty nice, with the 4G and all; but I just dislike it personally.
Take my opinions with a grain of salt, though. It's your choice.
Yeah
I was thinking the same thing but i feel like the pixels on the screens on both the htc phones are too low....
I have that same question as well but I'm primarily focusing on the LTE phones they have.
If you had to choose one of the following...
LG Revolution
HTC Thunderbolt
Samsung Droid Charge
Which one would you choose and why?
I went from the Charge to the X2, and now I'm starting to dislike the lack of development for the phone and I miss 4G.
Anyone here previously own a Charge and/or X2? Thoughts? I would have gotten the TB instead but the comments I've seen about the poor voice quality and some bad screens had turned me away.

I think there's 2 kinds of people out there.... There's the guys that think everything kicks ass, and there's the guys that think everything sucks ass. I really think people should investigate more for themselves and rely less on here-say to form an opinion about something. There's still people that think the Tbolt has problems rebooting all the time.
I haven't had one problem with my Tbolt. Can't say the same about anything from Motorola. A friend has an X2 and is feeling some real regret on account of speed, lack of 4G, and... It's a motorola. I think that pretty much says it all.
The Charge isn't bad, but it's not as technically capable as the Tbolt; a fact that carries weight with me. To me, the Tbolt is still the only option for me.
I came from the Droid X and I was disappointed in the t bolt. I'm on my 4th now, all of them rebooted constantly while on the old radio, but this is the only one that still reboots even after the new radio was flashed. the build quality is very poor on the t bolt compared to the X, horrible sound quality, call quality (on both ends) cheap feeling, poor finish. The only things I like on the t bolt over the X is the captive buttons, 4g and the RAM. Motorola has the best build quality, best reception, best call quality. As long as the bionic is rootable that's what I'll be getting next (verizon will replace it with a different phone next time)

Motorola cellular radios have always sucked ass. I stopped using them because it didn't seem to matter what model it was, NONE of them could keep a signal on the coast or the island I lived at. One had a buzz so loud you couldn't hear anyone talking over it. One wouldn't let you use switchboards. They ALL restarted all the time. Before I went smart phone, all I used was Samsung and Kyocera. For smart phones all I'd use are HTC, Samsung, and MAYBE BlackBerry. Every review I read of a Motorola notes it's cheap, flimsy feeling and build quality. If the Bionic ends up like that Moto Sprint is selling, I wouldn't be impressed by it.

Well I had a 2 Razr's and a Droid X and no Samsung, LG or HTC can match the reception of any of those, and they all had great build quality (personal experience, not reviews) I also had a blackberry storm which was a joke, but it did have great reception and call quality when it wasn't frozen. I have also had a few Samsung and LG phones (as well as my wife) and all of them had poor reception and call quality, and the trend continues from what I've seen with the galaxy phones. I've only had one HTC phone and it hasn't impressed me but from what I've seen in the inc, and what many others have told me about HTC Windows phones they seem to be good phones, that's why I think the t bolt was rushed because it isn't a very good phone.
I agree with both of you on certain points.
I have owned a few Motorola devices and my DX was by far the best when it came to call quality, I could be in my basement with -99 dbm signal strength on a call and it just wouldn't drop. Only a few times in the year I had that phone did I ever just randomly drop out of 3G in an area where Verizon had excellent coverage. Probably the most dependable phone I ever had. My old v325 held signal very well too, never had a dropped call with it.
However... the lack of updates and the outdated hardware makes it difficult for Motorola to keep up with the competition, that's why Samsung and HTC are ahead in the Android game. Those two companies are always coming out with something better in one way or another... but what has Motorola release lately that is a knockout? Nothing, and pretty soon the Bionic will be in the same boat. Motorola is too late in the game with the Bionic and it'll probably have the same crappy Pentile qHD display. I'd almost rather have a standard LCD screen.
I owned the Incredible when it first came out, but I sold it for the DX because I wanted a bigger screen and I wasn't a fan of that generation of AMOLED screens, looked just like the Pentile on the X2 except with more vivid colors. Otherwise it was a speedy phone, just didn't have the call quality the DX did.

My devices usually see a minimum of 30 or so states, if not all 48, so I definitely get to try out devices under just about every condition and terrain there is. Motorola's devices have consistently sucked ass. I was forced to stop using them all together when my wife and I lived on an island in FL. Forget making a phone call... you couldn't even text with them. I'm not too concerned about call quality if I can't make the call. The only company to make radios that are as bad is LG.

I will agree with that.
Are you on your original TB? What do you think of the screen and the call quality? Those are the two biggest factors in my decision on getting this phone. I read that the TB gets much better 4G reception than the Charge does.
Screen and call quality have been great with mine. But like loonatik, I've never had reboot problems either. That said until I bought the extended battery I was ready to give up on it.

I have had problems with both the Droid X and the HTC Thunderbolt. I also travel all across the country and seen how each each work in those areas. I don't know why but one of the many Thunderbolts I had would have terrible static at times. I could hear the person but all they heard was a bunch of static. I heard static on my end a couple times. That device was replaced and I never had that issue again. Out of the LTE devices available NOW, I would still pick the Thunderbolt out of any of the others. I would actually pick it over any of Verizon's smartphones as of NOW. The Thunderbolts pros outweigh the cons for me. I love the 35+Mbps download speeds at times.

I have been lucky and have not had any reboot issues or any of the other ones some have mentioned. I get great reception unless I'm buried in the basment of the building I work in. I also think the screen is damn good. It's bright, great color reproduction, deep blacks, and very crisp. It doesn't do good in direct sunlight but thats pretty much the case with most any phone screen. Overall it has been a great phone for me but I would recommend rooting and a custom ROM for the best experience.

The TBolt is a cool phone. I had a really tough time deciding whether to get it or the Charge. At the end of the day, the Charge was cheaper at Costco and I liked the screen more. Development definitely seems better on the TBolt, though I don't really mind as much since I don't use 3rd party ROMs. I'm a huge fan of the SAMOLED+, the proper subpixel pattern makes all the difference. I hate the pentile format that older AMOLEDs used, as well as what Moto is using on all of their new phones...
Regardless, I'd honestly say wait a few more days and see what the Bionic does.
Gents,
I have a few questions regarding your phone. I recently left Android as a favor to my wife (switched for an iphone, handing it down to her when I upgrade). I am looking to jump back into Android but have a bit of a tough decision to make.
I've used the Rezound, G-Nex, and the S3, I haven't used a motorola since my old droid X. I'm looking to possibly get the RAZR MAXX HD.
The DNA has been ruled out due to potential horrible battery life and non-expandable storage.
I ruled out going back to an S3 or getting a note 2 as I don't like the new samsung build quality/touchwiz.
I am tempted to get a G-Nex again (found the 32GB version at a best buy), I was able to get excellent photos with it. The battery life sucked, but I loved vanilla android. While I have rooted and flashed custom roms to all my phones, with the nexus I ended up going back to stock most of the time.
after testing the RAZR HD, I have only a few concerns. First is the camera....I've heard negative things about it, but also heard that JB resolves some issues. I don't take a lot of photos but the phone is my primary camera. I loved the pics that I received from the rezound, g-nex and s3.
Second concern: I am hoping that with the "close to vanilla" features of the razr that I will not feel the need to flash roms very much, I have noticed that rom dev is not as popular as other devices (granted, I came from a nexus and also the fact that this device hasn't been out as long as an s3). I know that the locked bootloader has chased away several talented devs in the past and has been a repellant to new devs jumping to the device.
I guess after this long rant, my questions is to users that used and liked the cameras on my previous three phones listed; do you like the razr camera as well? will I be disappointed? Should I hang on until february and then upgrade?
your thoughts?
thanks for your time.

If you liked the camera in the S3, then you will like the camera in the RAZR HD. Simple as that. They have the exact same sensor AFAIK. The performance of the camera is indeed improved under JB and now it's pretty good.
There's not much ROM dev happening which is a shame..... Dealbreaker? No.
I think you'll love the phone. It's hands down the best droid I've ever owned (I came from the HOX and the GS3). Loving it so far and not looking back! In summary I definitely do not think you will be disappointed. Get on board!
If you've used any iPhone camera since the 4, or the Samsung S3, you will be severely disappointed. White balance is way off under tungsten lights, tons of noise in images shot at ISO 100, and generally slow operation. Love the phone, just my honest opinion as a photographer.

It's odd, the camera is my S3 was pretty sub par, and I found it not terribly different to the RAZR HD camera. But you're not the first one to rate it more highly then I ever did. Perhaps mine was a dud. Either way, I do agree that the camera in the RAZR is not great, and neither was my S3 hence the comparison. The RAZR is such a great phone though that the pros easily outweigh then cons (for me).
Gents,
Many thanks for the responses, I ended up not getting the RAZR HD, the only reason being the camera. I almost didn't upgrade at all as my requirements were good camera, great battery life, and removable storage. I couldn't find a phone on big red that fit all of these that I was interested in.
My wife ended asking me why I ruled out the Note 2, after talking with her about it for a while, I ended up giving it a try and the device is great. I'm still concerned about the fragile build quality, however I have accessories that hopefully will help that. as far as touchwiz goes, I still don't like it, but the camera and S-Pen software rocks. I'm settling for Nova Prime and widgetlocker to assist in getting a vanilla-ish feel.
again, I appreciate your responses. They were very helpful in my decision.
Thanks,
