I'm stuck, dunno if I am in setup... adb shell says no device found and no noise when plugging in usb so assume debugging is off.
USE THIS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256
Much easier. Thought i'd add a note here so it gets front page coverage

Turn your phone off and remove PB99IMG.zip from your GoldCard. Hold vol-down + power. Wait 15 secs. Press vol-down x2, power button x1, vol-up x1. This will wipe userdata and reboot phone. Now start from step 10.
If I press search I get feedback from screen so I assume I am past setup. It's just enabling debugging now.

wow, thats great. sounds very complicated to get the correct number of scroll downs! is there no way to do the blank screen fix sooner in the rooting process instead of counting?
good luck to anyone trying this then.
You could try tapping the right bottom corner 13 times, but the correct number of scrolls is a better solution AFAIK.
Just thought i'd chip in here, if you're not sure where you are in the setup wizard, you can just restart the phone to begin it again, with...
(if bottom keys are unlit firstly)
press power short
swipe down the screen
(then)
power button long press, phone will briefly vibrate
joystick up a few times
joystick click
joystick click
That's to say, you don't need to wipe the phone in the recovery menu to restart the setup wizard, just restart it normally.
Also worth noting if i let the bottom keys go unlit, the phone was in standby, so to begin the setup wizard i had to do a short press on the power button to light up the keys, and swipe down the unlit screen to unlock the phone.

These steps may be easier for enabling debugging:
1. Wait a couple of minutes (so the display would switch off normally).
2. Press power once, and swipe down the screen.
3. Press menu. Right 4-5 times, down 2 times, press. (now in settings).
4. Swipe up on the screen to scroll down to the bottom.
5. Down one, press. Now (hopefully) in Applications.
6. Down 5-6 times, press.
7. Up a few times, press.
8. Press once more to confirm debugging.
If it doesn't work, press back 5-6 times and try again, though you can skips steps 1 and 2 if you do it straight away.
(I tried simulating this a couple of times by covering the screen so I couldn't see, and it worked each time)
edit: step 4-5 isn't completely reliable. It may be better to do step 4 and then try to press the part of the screen where the option is, near the top just below the + of the vol button.
Wow! Great job!

I couldn't get into USB debugging using the instructions in the first post, but this worked perfectly. (First attempt)
Tried multiple times, different steps. Going through it with lollylost on msn.
Anyone else wanna help out? He has to go.

You didn't copy update.zip or didn't flash it through recovery.
After step 28, should I be able to see something on the screen? (It rebooted, but the screen is still black.) Unrevoked said the root was successful.

Yup thanks alot all. If only usb debugging could be done another way this would be extremely easy. Ah well.
All went smoothly... apart from the re-rooting process!!
All of the no display bits were fine, unrevoked worked fine and I now have a clean non vodafone 1.21.405.2 but when I run unrevoked a second time to root again I have the same issue that I started with which is that my phone refuses to go into recovery!!! ODD.
Thanks so much for all the help so far, I am tempted to just apply the 2.2 update that I am prompted with now as I have no root anyway and at least then I will have 2.2 with no root!!!
Does this change how a custom ROM is installed? I'm following the tutorial here, but won't using the update.zip in that link break the screen again?

Ignore that. Install the ROM through custom recovery (be sure to do a nandroid backup first).

Hi all,
after installing volDeus BG tweakv 0.5 my phone died. i can't restart it and i can't perform a hard reset. i also tried the red reset button from the back - nothing. it's not even charging. i tried a different battery but didn't solve the problem. any help would be appreciated. i don't want to send it back for repair.
It happened to me after manilla, i made this factory reset and after that the phone worked fine.
Performing a factory reset using phone buttons
If you cannot turn on your phone or access the phone settings, you can still perform a factory reset by using buttons on the phone.
With your phone powered off, press and hold the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons.
While holding the volume buttons, press the END/POWER button briefly and then release it.
When you see a warning message on screen, release the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons.
Press the VOLUME UP button to perform the reset, or press any other button to cancel the reset.
thanks for reply. like i said, i can't perform a hard reset because the phone is not responding. when i press the volume up, down and power button nothing happens. i don't know what to do.
Ahhhhhh.. me 2
My hd was dead during flashing and still not working but a good thing......
I bought a new HD2.
But if some one have an idea plz let me know.
Thanks in advance

If you're unable to perform a hard reset with the hard keys as explained above, you don't have any other choice but to send it in for repair as far as I know...sorry.
I'd suggest first taking out the battery for a couple of hours and then try again.

Also try this;
1. Remove the battery
2. Plug the USB cable to your computer and to your HD2
3. Push and hold volume down/up
4. Insert the battery
Normally the HD2 would start when doing this.

1. L3nny, for future reference, Co0kie's Home Tab v1.8.5 already has the voldeus skinning function built-in, so there's no more need for it in the future... but since you've got it now... calm down and bear with me here...
2. Voldeus' skinning does not mess with your rom image at all, and any changes can be reversed with a HardReset (i've been there and done that). A HardReset does take 3 hands and a few tries to get it for the first time. The red button on the back is only a SoftReset, same as taking the battery out, so that's not gonna work. And since you've just seen the bootloader now, your previous HardReset attempt probably didn't have the correct buttons combination, so it never worked. Try again using this combo from TBoy2000's HowTo thread: remember it's pressing volumeUP AND Down together AND Power button. you need three thumbs

hard reset is not working. i don't think i do it wrong, because it's not the first time i try this.
i copied shell32.exe and aygshell.dll from voldeus' post an dput it on my sd card. i chose some settings, chose the wallpaper and soft reset. but the phone froze at start-up. i put out the battery and from that moment, i couldn't do anything.
if i can enter the bootloader does it mean i can install HSPL and maybe a stock or custom ROM? but if something goes wrong i loose my warranty!
please help me guys, i'm lost.
1) Maby your battery charge is too low ( maby, your usb port is broken and charging is not ON)
Try to connect your HD2 to charge
Its will be better if you will go to service centre.
sorry for my bad English

Is your machine tied to a certain provider? If it is send it back and get a new one.You obviously have a faulty machine.Easy way to bootloader,
Hold volume down.
Take off back.
Press red button.
Bootloader appears flash radio or ROM
i tried with another battery and nothing changed. so i solved this problem already.
yes, it's an orange phone. what would be better: trying to flash a new ROM (if something go wrong i loose the warranty) or send it back for repair?

I dont know but i think that: to flash a new ROM you must enter in bootloader.
It is better to change a device for the new
Its a critical problem. This problem can appear again even if you repair your phone.
If you have official guarantee - you must change your device ( go to your service centre )
DUDE!~!!!!~! You're already in bootloader, just flash your original orange STOCK ROM already and be done with this!!! ALSO, you MUST take out your SD card, since that maybe the problem to begin with (having your core system files at the root of your SD is not a smart idea). If that DOESN'T work, then send the damn thing back to Orange for an exchange! Your choices are really simple, why are you wasting everone's time with this!
Good luck
i just wanted your opinion about my problem beeing a beginner in WM phones. i think always is better to ask a second opinion, especially when you are a newbie. if i wasted someones time i'm sorry.
anyway, thanks for the answers. i'll send it back to orange.
I wouldn't send the phone to repair.
1. enter bootloader-mode
2. mtty task29 search forum
3. enter bootloader again
4. flash orange original rom
5. after flashing perform a hard reset

Method 1 - Update.zip
http://www.filedropper.com/update2
1. Put the file on the root of your sdcard and rename it to update.zip.
2. Turn off your phone.
3. Remove the battery.
4. Reinstall the battery.
5. Hold volume down + power until you get to a white screen.
6. Use the volume rocker to highlight FASTBOOT and press power to select.
7. Use the volume rocker highlight RECOVERY and press power to select. If you see an exclamation point instead of the blue menu, you might have to press volume up or down to get into the blue recovery menu.
8. Use the volume rocker to highlight and press power to select APPLY SDCARD UPDATE.ZIP.
9. DON'T TOUCH IT UNTIL IT'S DONE AND REBOOTS ON ITS OWN.
10. You should now be in 2.2.1 with all of your data preserved.
Method 2 - pd15img.zip
This procedure will completely erase ALL of your data but it is guaranteed to work.

Thank you Phateless!
I've just bricked my phone this afternoon, and been looking for some noob way for recovering it.
It is all because I rooted this phone and might delete some critical apks that caused my phone lost its desktop/main screen.
Doesn't PD15img kill WiFi?
If you read the How To Root. . . thread carefully you will see that PD15img is only partially 2.2.1 and more has to be added to get a full install of 2.2.1 with working WiFi.
After waiting more than a week for an automatic update after I got my phone, I tried the PD15img thing without reading all of the posts and only too late discovered that my WiFi didn't work and a lot more had to be done to get it back. And it appears that PD15img can't be undone. I had decided to take the phone back for an exchange but. . .
That very night TMo did an automatic update from my incomplete 2.2.1 to real 2.2.1, which fixed the problem.
I didn't get the phone from TMo directly and I never gave them my IMEI. I wonder if the automatic update was just luck or PD15img had something to do with it.
Thank you.. My phone hasn't been rooted yet, but I'll give that a try. I hope it's a full update.. That'd suck if my wifi didn't work...

You're thinking of the OLD pd15img.zip that was part of the procedure to undo the OTA update. The one I linked to is the NEW one posted by Football that completely restores to 2.2.1 without issue. NEW radio, NEW SPL, NEW software.
I tested it on two different phones and everything worked perfectly.
You were thinking of this method.

If all you did was delete the wrong APK and it can be restored by flashing a stock image, it certainly is not bricked by any means.

So told him to just flash using LeoCustomRRU as he could do task29 and flash.
BTW NRGZ28 thanks for cooking NRG roms bro loved your 6.5.X work specially the whole 29XXX base as it was most stable and fast to bad HD2 is stolen.

I followed the guide you gave me since i was using an obsolete one and it worked perfectly. My phone says its on 2.2.1 but it doesnt feel like i am.... i remember after my update the market app was completely different, it has this half circle kind of look to it where it featured some popular apps. this version of 2.2.1 doesnt have that. is there any specific reason for that or am i missing something?
thanks again for your help!
The market update itself was a separate update "just to the market app" than 2.2.1. I had to force 2.2.1 on my phone early on; market came later. You should be able to find it in the apps/themes section, or just give it time and it should update itself.
Great post but I really need help.
I guess my phone is from some other batch or ... who know these chinese these days.
Anyways my menu is just different from described.
as folllows:
HBOOT screen
FASTBOOT (gets me to FASTBOOT screen)
RECOVERY (just give triangle makeing out with exclamation point)
FACTORY RESET
SIMLOCK
IMAGE CRC
FASTBOOT sreen
BOOTLOADER (gets me back to HBOOT screen)
REBOOT
REBOOT BOOTLOADER
POWER DOWN
Don't really want to go with pd15img.zip route to preserve data. (So far)
Thanks
btw - I'm on Simple Mobile so no OTA for me

I don't quite understand your issue here? Is it that you get stuck at the recovery screen with a triangle? Did you read step 7 of the previous posts clearly?
7. Use the volume rocker highlight RECOVERY and press power to select. If you see an exclamation point instead of the blue menu, you might have to press volume up or down to get into the blue recovery menu.
Ok, maybe this time it will post.
Thanks for your answer Genocaust
I'm noob so I'm trying everything that comes to my mind several times before bugging good people.
Somehow my menus seems to be different than expected. Anyways, right after hboot my first screen has following options:
* FASTBOOT
* RECOVERY
* FACTORY RESET
* SIMLOCK
* IMAGE CRC
Clicking on recovery gets me triangle/exclamation screen after several tries i managed to get blue menu by pressing VolumeUP and POWER simultaneously (just up or down does nothing at all).
there is apply update.zip but when clicked returns yellow message:
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
Invalid operation
and goes black and not responsive.
After waiting for say 20 min decided to pull battery. (phone works, still 2.2)
Tried above few times. Downloaded update file yet another time, even changed file name using file manager on the phone (i know).
I will appreciate any suggestions. I guess next step is pd15img.zip which I wanted to avoid or stay on 2.2
Phone is few days old and all stock
Thanks again
A week ago I tried flashing to a newer Revolution Rom that required me to SUPERWIPE and so I used super wipe before flashing the device with the Revolution ROM, But after doing so CWM said that the rom package was in some kind of error. So I turned the device off and re-downloaded the ROM.
Now I can't seem to get to CWM.
is this a soft brick ?
what can I do about it to make it function again?
how do I get to CWM?

If this doesn't work and it just goes back to the eee pad screen. I have a dirty method that might fix it. I was actually able to root my B7 by soft bricking it with the the universal root method that doesn't correctly work on B7(some) or B8. Not going to recommend it right out though since it I'm not sure how safe it is to be doing it.

Running CM 10.1, 06/08 Nightly
I did search the threads and google, but could not find any posts about a phone that works normally except for download and recovery.
Problems:
1. Can't boot into recovery (via apps, power menu, or manually). It gets to the boot logo, and then blank screen and resets. It will keep resetting trying to go into recovery (a battery pull will put it back to normal).
2. Can't stay in download mode. When I put the phone in download mode, it turns off after a couple seconds. I can't ODIN it if it keeps turning off.
3. Power button doesn't work properly (sometimes it works, most of the times it doesn't). Example: I press the power button to close the screen. No response. A few minutes later I might press it, and the screen will close, but come back on and this time with power menu. I took out the button to verify that it wasn't stuck, and tried pressing the actual button inside the phone with the stick. I can feel it click, but it still has the same problems. Pretty sure it's not a stuck button.
What's working:
-Everything else. If I let the phone boot normally, it loads perfectly fine and into cyanogenmod. No issues with voice/data, any apps, or instability. No battery issue. No lag. No crashes. The only issue is with the power button, and my inability to boot into recovery or go into download mode.
History:
-I was experiencing a random reboot problem (and power button issue) from an earlier nightly, and I waited a couple months for a more stable version. The CWM recovery for some reason only worked sometimes. When I did get it to work, I flashed RC5 (format and wipe data, dalvik, cache, factory reset, etc.), which fixed my reboot problem, but not my power button.
-I came across this thread: at plus.google(.com)104277415207525128383/posts/iAVpVPYqMtM and updated the radio, even though the RC5 fixed my random reboot.
-I did try flashing CWM, TWRP, and Stock recoveries (the latest ones, and from CWM/EZ recovery apps), but have not tried CWM Touch. It doesn't seem to matter, it won't boot into recovery.
Perceived Solution:
-I have a plan with Best Buy - I am considering smashing the phone and getting it replaced with a refurb, but would like to avoid that if possible.
Anyone have any ideas? I am okay with the phone as is, but I would like to be able to update CM or to another ROM in the future
Thanks for helping me out!

Thanks for responding; It doesn't boot into recovery at all. Right after holding Vol. Up, Menu + Power, I get the screen with the small text in the corner, so you know it's going to enter recovery. Then the logo appears, except after that the phone either hangs with a blank screen, shuts off, or resets itself.
I think something got corrupted, but I'm not sure how to find out what, or what steps I could take to fix it.

Unfortunately if you can't get into the recovery mode or the Odin mode then you would need to replace the phone. It's bricked.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I've never really heard or seen someone with a "functionally bricked" phone, so I'm not sure what to do.
Before I go ahead and smash it for the insurance replacement, I want to see if anyone else has any ideas..
Like I said, the phone boots normally just fine. Is there some kind of app that can flash files? Or maybe some commands I can enter in the terminal emulator?

Have you tried Odin Mobile Pro? I've never used it myself, but I've heard a lot of good things about from some friends.
It sounds to me like a faulty power button, it isn't hardbricked because your phone is able to boot into recovery and download mode. But If for some reason your power button is stuck in the on position, it will skip booting into recovery and eventually boot out of download mode. Just because the power button physically moves and clicks doesn't mean it can't get stuck, there's obviously something funny going on with it that isn't rom/kernel regulated.
You can try terminal emulator to see if it will work, but I honestly wouldn't do anything in any menu because your phone has the potential to reboot during a process and destroy your phone. Commands are:
su
reboot recovery
su
reboot download
If it's a power button issue, best buy should replace it anyways, you shouldn't have to smash it. Samsung will also fix it under your manufacturer warranty despite it being rooted.

Yes, I did. This brings me back into download mode, at which the phone just turns off.

Thanks for the commands; they ended up just shutting the phone off.
Yeah, I did ponder the idea that even though the power button "clicked," it might not necessarily be working. I google searched "galaxy s 3 broken power button" and there was a video with a description where the guy mentioned something about the circuit always being switched "on"
But his phone experienced different symptoms than mine (because the circuit was always switched on, the phone actually restarted itself while in normal operation. This hasn't happened to me).
Is there an app for me to definitely determine which buttons are being registered as they are pressed? Similar to programs that tell you what buttons you're pressing on your keyboard.
I would take it back to Best Buy, but I just don't want to give them any reason to say it was my own fault since I rooted and put a custom ROM on it.
Haha, I'll dunk it in salt water in favor of smashing it
Thanks again for your suggestions and ideas :cyclops:
Hello everyone. I have Katkiss Kitkat #19 and TWRP recovery 6.something but I can't remember which. Anyway, I use to reboot into recovery by holding down the Volume down, then press Volume up when prompted to get into recovery. Now the power and volume buttons are completely busted. I can't press any of them. And I need to go into recovery to flash the new Rom.
So, here is what I tried:
1. Rom Toolbox. I tried to "Reboot into recovery" option but it just reboots the ddevice.
2. Terminal emulator: su reboot recovery, it says reboot: no such order
3. Tried to hook it to my laptop and use ADB, but no devices attached. I have Windows 8.1 64 bit. I have Android drivers installed and in the device manager it say Asus ADB and it shows Asus in the "safely remove" but I still can't see it in the My computer. I have USB debugging on and it asked me to allow my laptop keys and I agreed. Still, ADB doesn't work.
I don't know what else can I do. I can't go into recovery, bootloader or APX mode without the power and volume buttons. Is there anything i can do, or am I stuck here?
Any help will be greatly appreciated...:crying:
There's a few different apps that let you boot to recovery
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.siriusapplications.quickboot

When you say the power and volume buttons are completely busted, have you tried taking the plastic bezel off and pressing the micro buttons under the normal silver ones ?

I tried the first one and six from the second link and none of them work. Actually, when I was installing Xposed, I pressed reboot, but it said Reboot: No such tool. I don't know what's going on.
The problem with the power button is that my kid dropped the tablet many times and it got so many dents, so I took of the casing (or whatever it's called0 and then straightened it out, out the buttons in their places and then glued it in place. Now it's really hard to press the power button (the one underneath) but it works. But how can I do that every time I want to power off or reboot into recovery, specially if there is a boot loop. I can't do anything except pressing the power button.
That's why I wanted an easy solution at least to reboot recovery.
May be I should take off the casing one more time and try to fix the power and volume buttons one more time.
I just want to thank you for your super fast reply and taking the time to find those apps.
Thanks a lot...
In the past, while still on stock ROM,I have been using this tool to overcome the missing "reboot to recovery" option in the regular Asus power menu: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.transformer.recovery
Now I have tested it on KK #19 and this tool apparently does not reboot the tablet BUT:
when I run this tool and then reboot the tablet normally (with the power menu...) I get into recovery.
So if you are already able to reboot normally through Rom Toolbox you might try to run this one first before rebooting with Rom Toolbox.
NOTE I imagine you are perfectly aware that you are playing with fire here.
In case your tablet gets into a boot-loop while installing the new ROM, you might end up with a useless tablet. Is it really worth the risk?

OK, you did it. You got me scared, so I separated the casing in the power button part and clicked on the original button with a small screwdriver and it worked. Also the volume buttons. Now I don't know what to do. May be the buttons are broken from the inside. I'll try to see if those are sold on ebay or something. If not, I'll try to attach something to them from the underside.
Anyway, I'm really grateful that you made me take this step. I'll fix it tomorrow first thing in the morning. Well, we both know I'm not gonna sleep until I get it fixed, hahaha.
Again, thanks a lot...
