Can I replace my internal SD card with a faster/larger one?
Is it soldered to the logic board? or just plugged inside the housing?
I tested the speed via Activity monitor, and am getting speeds ~9MB/s This is good, but I notice lag when I start playing a movie, or music.
Also Whats the largest SD card i can put into the external SD slot?
Thanks.
32Gb in the external SD slot, and I haven't noticed any lag playing movies or music on either internal or external memory.
I'd stick with a 16GB external card until the speeds on the 32's come up ...
The current flavor of (sandisk) 32GB SDHC cards is class 2.
From what I can tell byt looking at pictures of the PCB's in the phone the internal SD card is integrated on the board ... I do not believe it can be modified or replaced ...
Well thats sux. Does anyone know what the speed rating is on the internal SD? Like I said I was getting ~9MB/s non formally viewing Activity Monitor on my mac while adding files.
I will try to run some tests to see what the actually speed is if noone has an answer.
Here we go. See screenshot of Disk test from XBench 1.3. The SD card could be a Class 4 I think.

It also depends what format and video player your using. For example on rockplayer I have a 2.2GB 720p 2001 space odyssey that won't even play but it plays perfect on the samsung video player. However i also transformers 2 1.1GB 720p that plays on rockplayer but its choppy and that also plays perfect on samsungs video player
@wpb2
2MB/s = class 2
4MB/s = class 4
6MB/s = class 6
I'd say its class 6 judging by your uncached read/write speeds of 6.10/7.41 MB/s. I think thats as fast as you're going to get for SD cards.
I have a Kingston 16GB class 2 SD card and with a 8kb buffer I get 16mb/s reads and 13mb/s writes. The internal NAND gives me 14mb/s reads and 0.5mb/s writes. Go figure

It sounds like you are measuring write speed. This would not affect playing movies. when you see lag playing the movie, are your playing it on the mac or the phone? I have watched some HD rips on my phone, and they play amazing.

My question is how does the worlds leading manufacture of Flash memory go with an internal SD card for their flagship top of the line Android phone. What a dumb move.

Sorry to reply to an old thread but I have a question.
Could I replace the board in a Verizon Fascinate with one from a Vibrant, Captivate or Epic 4 G to bump it up from 2GB to 16GB or are the GSM/CDMA radios also integrated into this board as well.
A Franken-ate mod if you will...

Is this your first ANdroid phone? All of them have internal sd and option for external, 16gb is pretty big for and internal and I use my exteral for viewing media, no problem. The argument is stupid.
SD? We don't need no steenkin' SD!
OK, Samsung just calls their built-in flash memory an "internal SD" as a convention to help end-users think of it as being functionally different from the 2GB of internal system memory. It might even be interfaced similarly to SD specs, but there is not actually a removable MicroSD card inside your phone. Just think of it as a metaphor.
The internal SD card is not an actual SD card. It is a chip of flash memory that is not user replaceable. The performance issue is a software issue.
I have often wondered, as there is a micro sd sized removable panel, sealed with a screw that is behind the battery slot.

I've read 2 different things about how much memory the Captivate will see. Does anyone know for sure if it's 48 or 32 gigs?
I put my 32Gb Sandisk in my Captivate today...and it mounted ok, all 21Gb of installed music and movies on that card seemed to work fine, based on my random sampling.
Keep in mind that it makes a "fake" /sd directory in the root of the internal /sdcard, and that points to the external storage when using an Android file explorer like Astro. And also keep in mind that there's a lot of apps that just don't know about this directory, so they can't "see" the external storage.
Windows sees two distinct storage devices, however, as it should be.
It has build in internal 16GB (2GB of that is reserved for apps) rest 14GB is data for whatever, Plus whatever Micro SDHC card you will add.
16+16 SD = 32GB
16+32 SD = 48GB
I have put 16GB micro SDHC to it (32GB cards are to expensive) connected to windows i get two drive letters one for Internal 14GB Data partition and one for my own 16GB card.
Hope that helped you.

Yep the ATT site spec sheet says 32gb is supported by the phone. And from all appearances it does indeed seem to work with the phone just fine.
Now the real question. Who is going to tear apart the phone and replace the internal SD card (since I assume it's literally an internal microSD card as seen in other devices) with a 32 GB card and see if it can handle 32+32 GB.

you seem like a willing volunteer
hmm if only i had two 32gb sd cards i would but they expensive
The real reason for replacing the internal SD card would be because it's so damn slow.
I agree with the slow part hence the mods to change the cache onto the external which speed up the phones.... any word on if the internal SD card is replaceable or not? If it is, that would be great news as its definately not as fast as a class 6 card and replacing it with one would definately speed things up.

Haha, exactly that. If I had the money for two 32 GB cards I'd try.
Edit Hmm... I saw a tear down of the Galaxy S and I didn't see an internal microSD card, so maybe it doesn't use a card like the Streak. Might be built in and unable to swap. Oh well!
I've been reading that the higher class SDHC cards like class 6, 10 aren't great for random write access, small blocks, but since we run our OS/apps on the phone's internal memory and we don't do the A2SD+ stuff, should it be ok to use class 10 cards?
Or does android still do a lot of significant random access on SD cards for the sensation?
Class 10!
I use a 32GB class 10 with nearly all my apps stored on there. I don't suffer and read / write lag. All I'd say is you get what you pay for, so don't buy a cheap one
I understand but do you know if the OS does the random r/w on sdcard? I'm not running any a2sd for my apps or anything so AFAIK I could run my phone without an SD card...
well since gingerbread came out app2sd is integrated into the OS, so you can transfer your apps to your SD card or they can be internally stored
just go to settings>applications>manage applications then tap into any app (thats not a system app) and you can move it to your SD card o to the phone
?????
I'm not asking about transferring apps to SD card?!
I'm asking if the random read/write access matters since our OS and apps are on the internal 4GB memory of the phone. Does the OS use the sdcard for any operations at all?
i read somewhere in the forums that class 4 will suffice. class 10 suits those HD camcorders as the write speed is high. if i'm not wrong, the read speed is the same for all (don't blame me if i'm wrong though)
I'm actually also wondering about this. Since the sensation can record 1080p, does that mean we need a fast writing card for our phone?
I have just bought a 32GB class 4 Sandisk micro SD (£28.99 Ebay) and i have no problems at all recording video at [email protected] Mbps. It may seem slightly jerky when you are actually filming on screen but when you play it back its smmmooottthhh!! Don't buy cheap memory cards. YOU WILL REGRET IT and waste your hard earned cash!! Just a personal experience warning.

I agree. I have a 32gb class 4 sandisk and also a 32gb class 10 lexar and both record perfectly fine (smooth recording and playback). I'm using Amaze Cam v7 with 16mb bitrate. So if it can record and playback (via connecting to USB to computer and playing on PC) smoothly, then it is more than fast enough to run the apps and constant writing apps.

I ordered Lexar 32gb class 10 card from Amazon Tigerdirect seller for 48$... Will get it in couple of Weeks... I think class 10 is good fir sensation and is also future proof...
Spending once is better then spending twice later...
When I play video stored on my internal storage, it is smooth. I can watch a 90 minute movie video without noticing any glitch at all.
When I play video stored on my external storage, there are glitches. One glitch every 1-2 minutes. These are not big glitches, just a brief deviation that gets your attention. If I listen, I think it is skipping a fraction of a second of the audio. (It may be skipping a fraction or second of the video display also, but my eye doesn't detect it). It's not a huge deal: ...... but just something that I notice and it's a minor irritation.
Since it occurs only on external sd, not internal storage, I assume it is the speed of the sd card. I have a 16GB Sandisk SD card. If I remember right, it's "Class 6"
I don't hear any glitches when listening to MP3's off of external sd, works just fine with no glitch ever.
SUMMARY: no problems on internal sd, no problems on mp3's. The only problems are videos on external sd.
It seems to me that the external sd can't quite keep up with the high transfer rate required for video playback.
Has anyone else seen this?
Any observation about which SD cards do this and which don't?
By the way I'm running rooted 2.3.6 from qkster's package, with Zen's Infusion A kernel. Holo launcher.
I haven't tried boosting to 1600Mhz. I'll try that and report the results later.

I just tried it - no difference. Glitches still occurred with cpu max frequency set to 1600.
You should try to format your external card and then try again.
Also, it could be your external card is to slow on reading
Should not be that slow if it is class 6 though...
Maybe try other card on your infuse with same video file.

Thanks. I have also noted the SD card media scanner runs to scan my external sd card more frequently... almost every time the phone comes out of sleep. I think this symptom coincides with me adding more files to my external SD.
I will try reformatting now as you recommended.
Question: is it better to reformat sd card in the phone or on the pc?
(if on the phone, there is no question of file system... I'll let the phone pick the format. If on pc, I'm not sure what format to pick... I'm using Entropy's kernel with voodoo lagfix enabled... does that mean external cannot be formatted to FAT32? )
The bigger problem is the constant scanning every time I turn the screen on. It was a nuisance, and I think it was draining my battery.
It gave the error message "sd card unexpectedly removed".
There are threads on this for some other Samsung devices.

There was a suggestion Sandisk cards in Samsung devices tend to have the problem.
I transferred my files to my pc, formatted sd in the phone, no problem until I transferred files back... then problem started recurring.
I reformatted in the PC to Fat32. Put files back on. Seems to be much better. But very close monitoring using SD Card Monitor program....
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5zZGNhcmRtb25pdG9yIl0.
... shows it is still have problems. I'm going to break down and buy another sd card. Perhaps another brand.

Your SD card has problem for sure.
It shouldn't scan that often and it shouldn't say it is unexpectedly removed.
Seems either phone's card reader or the card is very unstable. That is why you are having problems in video files.
If the SD card benchmark program shows that tour SD card is performing bad, I beehive you got fake Sandisk SD card or really low class SD card.
From this point, I believe getting new SD card is the best solution here.
PS. You should put the SD card on PC then run benchmark on PC to see how it performs on PC. If it performs too much faster on PC, then the problem might be your phone's card reader.

Symptom went away with new sd
Before replacing the sd card, I had 100+ sd card events recorded by theSD Card Monitor program in a 24 hours period.
After replacing the sd card, I have 0 events recorded by the SD Card Monitor program in a 24-hour period.
The new SD is a Lexar 32GB Class 10 for $45 at Target. (preformatted as FAT32)
It was cheaper than the $70 32GB SanDisk they're selling at Best Buy.
I'm tempted to say the problem is solved.
On the other hand, one thing I noticed on the old SD was that the old sd symptoms got worse with time... I don't think they were there when the card was new. So I'm not sure if I've really solved the problem or just reset the clock waiting for the new SD to act up under whatever influences degraded the old one. Time will tell. For the time being, life is good. That scanning upon coming out of sleep was a real PITA.. slowed down the phone just when you picked it up to use it... actually dropped two phone calls recieved while phone was sleeping.. I presume because the phone wasn't able to handle scanning and answering at the same time.
Perhaps it was a fake SanDisk. Where'd you buy it from? Lots of fakes on eBay.
I bought the SanDisk (that had the problems) at Best Buy.
Hi,i've bought a micro sd for my nvidia shield k1 (micro sd: class 10; 90 mb\s; toshiba exceria U3; 128gb). I format it like a internal memory and i moved some apps on it.Simple apps like aptoide crashed, some doesn't start and games doesn't load or lag. Why?
The micro sd is: https://www.amazon.it/Toshiba-Sched...=8-1&keywords=toshiba+exceria+micro+sd+128+gb
A U3 is usually good.
Go to the play store and look for A1 SD bench. Then test the speed. Maybe your SD card's write speed is too slow.
I can recommend: Sandisk Extreme 128GB Class 10 SDXC u3

Thanks man,the results are 11mb\s write and 40mb\s reading. Now the sd card works apparently good
11MB/s write speed is too slow! I've one of those slow cards too and I had to replace it. The current write speed of the Sandisk is over 45MB/s.
I presume your card is too slow for screen recording. I couldn't download and watch videos simultaneously with the slow card. Also, the download speed was quite slow.

I am using the same SDCard currently in mine. Having a few issues with adaptable storage, however runs fine as external.
Anyone use Samsung micro SD cards in their U12 (or other device)?
I've used SanDisk exclusively the last few years, and PNY before that. But, the Samsung Evo cards are consistently $10-$15 cheaper for a UHS-3 128gb card.
Just wondering if anyone else uses them, and how well they work for 4K videos.
the Samsung ones are the best, but the PNY 256GB is UHS III class 10 speed V30 A1, and works very well on my HTC U12+, for the price worth each penny

Yup, I save both 4K videos and pictures to the SD-Card with zero problems. Just make sure you don't encrypt the SD-Card as it impacts both read/write speeds which in turn results in the slow speed warning being displayed.
Cheers

I was getting the same message for my transcend card, I almost bought a new sandisk card, and stumbled onto the storage settings for the card on the phone. It gives me the option to format the card for the phone. It says that after formatting, the card will only work with the the phone. I am ok with that because it is for the phone and I like to store my pics on the external sd card to not waste space on the internal. Just go to settings > storage > portable storage (select the setting icon next to your sd card) > format
