I modified my X10 Youtube apps from \system\app to make it always in high res.
My X10 is HK R2BA024
Original Post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=676545
For the X10 the youtube apps should modify the line 145
.line 145
invoke-virtual {p0}, Lcom/google/android/youtube/PlayerActivity;->getNetworkSpeed()I
move-result v1
const/4 v2, 0x3
#if-ne v1, v2, :cond_0
const/4 v1, 0x1
Also I attached my modified Youtube apps
Replace the original Youtube from \system\app
remember change the permission, and then reboot your device
Tnx Just what I was looking for.
Guys,
I am using Astro File Manager and there is no way I can paste the file over to the phone directory.
Please advise me how I can able the permission to copy file to the phone directory, thanks.
you need adb....
and do this...
Code:
adb shell mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock2 /system
adb push YouTube.apk /sdcard/YouTube.apk
adb shell dd if=/sdcard/YouTube.apk of=/system/app/YouTube.apk
adb shell rm /sdcard/YouTube.apk
adb shell reboot
What would be nicer is if you gave this version of Youtube a different name, like Youtube-Hires or something so that we can have both installed and pick which resolution we want for a video instead of always one or always the other.

Dear all members,
I have found the Root Explorer and tried copy the modified YouTube.apk into the system/app folder but I encounter an error message which is telling me that it is read-only file so I cannot overwrite it.
What should I do?
Guys, I have managed to change the permission for the youtube.apk file to enable the user read, write and execute and replace the original file.
After rebooting the phone, when I watch any youtube video, it is still playing in normal quality.
What have I done wrong?
Sry, but what´s adb? :S
Thank you it worked!

Hi, can anyone help as I tried to root the phone and copied the modified YouTube.apk to the /system/app/ folder but after reboot, this directory becomes R/O and when I start the YouTube, it is still showing video in Normal Quality.
I have used Universal Androot to root the phone and use root explorer to copy the file.

I also use the universalandroot, and root explorer
on the system/app the top corner, you will see the R/O press the Mount R/W then overwrite the existing one, can then change the Permission to
User Read , Write
Group Read
Others Read
after that press ok, and then reboot your phone
suppose the youtube will always in high res. and I watch the youtube everyday and haven't problem
Thanks~

Thanks for your instruction. I managed to get it to play videos in High Quality by default.
Dear gurus,
I am noob and I think the procedure is to change the permission of original YouTube. Apk to non read only and paste the new file. But how do it get adb running? Thx again.
Rooted x10
My Youtube is deleted. I don't have it anymore and this doesn't work anymore. Could anyone help to get YouTube back again?
did i understood it right?
if i have the permission to overwrite the file i havn`t to use adb right?
only overwrite and everythings done!?
I think the instruction is very clear and there is no need for adb in this case.

I follow the steps above and use only universalandroot with Root Explorer then I can always play YouTube videos in High Quality.
Found the missing youtube file and adb your edited files.
Awesome, works great.
Thank you ,

thanks Chong. Wow, just saw your singapore flag. I am also from Singapore and currently my vesion is R2BA020. I manage to download the root explorer apk, install and perform each step as mentioned. Of course the different is i am not using universalandroot. I rooted my phone by another method, also from XDA, a 30sec root procedure and not by flashing my rom. So far no luck. Perhaps it is the rooting procedure different, do you think so?

Yes, I think the rooting procedure might be different, you might want to try using Universalandroot instead?
If you need further help, let me know.

Hello,
I have rooted my X10 and I have R2BA020 and I have removed some apps with Titanium, nothing like Mediascape or Timescape. I have removed Moxier, GTalk, Quadrapop and user manuals. Obviusly I have uninstalled something that I shouldnt ( me IDIOT didnt make backup of those apps in Titanium !! ). Now whenever I start my phone I get this message that it has failed to start and I must press Force close. I have found some solution that I delete data from Google Apps and Gmail in Settings -> Applications but it seems to work one time because when I entered my data again in Gmail I got it again when I boot my phone.
Please, can anybody help me ? Maybe give me GTalk and other app that was below it as .apk so I can install it ?
Tnx a lot !
Removing GTalk was a terrible idea.
I see that now I have found X10 dump and installed Talk.apk and gtalkservice.apk and I got GTalk icon but when I press it I get that message again. I dont get it when I go in Gmail or Market, they are working.
Any other help, please ?

You have to push them to /system/app, not just installed regularly
Ok, thanx. How do I do that ? I really have no idea how to do this, I have installed them only like any other .apk.
Thank you very much !
Assuming you put the two apks on your sdcard..
Code:
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mtd2 /system
dd if=/sdcard/gtalkservice.apk of=/system/app/gtalkservice.apk
dd if=/sdcard/Talk.apk of=/system/app/Talk.apk
chmod 644 /system/app/Talk.apk
chmod 644 /system/app/gtalkservice.apk
reboot
I put them on root of SD card right ?
Only one last thing, how and where should I copy&paste those commands ? Can you please tell me step by step, I would really appreciate it because I dont want to flash my phone again. Connect the phone on my PC and then Start -> Run or how ? I can see that you are professional and it is very hard for me to understand how to do this.
Thank you SO MUCH !
Android terminal app, YOU NEED NOT WORRY ABOUT THE COMMANDS BUT CAN MANUALLY COPY THE INSTALLED APP FILE FROM sdcard/gtalkservice.apk TO SYSTEM/APP/ ENABLING R/W OPTION TOP LEFT IN ROOT EXPLORER.
I need terminal app on my phone or on my PC ? Here:
http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.android.term
Manually copy this Talk.apk and gtalk.apk file to system/app ? How can I do that ? I dont know how to enter system/app folder on my phone ? Also those read-write permissions, where do I change that ? Can I do it with Astro File Manager ?
Please explain me like to an idiot coz Im not far from that
And on the end, should I uninstall Talk.apk and other one first since I have installed them just like regular .apk app ?
Is this Root Explorer that I need:
http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.speedsoftware.rootexplorer
Tnx a million !
I go in this Root Explorer and cannot copy Talk.apk from SDCard to system/app, it says that file system is read only. When I long press on Talk.apk in SDCard and go in Permissions there is no tick in User row, only in Group, then I tick Read and Write and OK but when I press ok ticks are gone again and I cannot copy that in system/app folder then.
Please guide me how to do it.

They need to be signed with the same signature as the system afaik. You'll need GTalk and the other app from an x10 build.
I have downloaded Talk.apk and gtalkservice.apk from X10 dump. What do I need more ? I think I will have to flash the phone again since obviusly there is no solution for this...
Tnx
Hey,
I had the same pb and the code on the 1st page worked for me.
Put those 2 .apk files on the root folder of your sdcard.
Write the code on 1st page in Better Terminal. Reboot and you're done !
Good luck
Nope, I have tried it but nothing happened with those last 2 chmod commands and I have reflashed my firmware again and not touching GTalk app
Tnx for the info
Hey guys,
I just rooted my phone, and haven't removed ANY of the google apps and I'm getting this same error... Any ideas?
X
wouldn't hurt to try a re-root
I get also same error, even i've not removed Gtalk. Gtalk works properly
i found these apps so that the error is not repeated all the apps should moved to system/app folder using 644 permissions
i have attached the files at the end
Removed Gtalk
ok, so yesterday I was using Gtalk on my samsung captivate to chat with some friends, until i wanted to sign out and go onto another of my google accounts to chat with other people. but when i clicked sign out it simply closed the app then when i reopened it, it was still on my other account. well me being the impatient person that i am decided to use my root power and remove gtalk and try to reinstall it later.....WRONG.... now i keep getting an error... (com.google.process.gapps. has unexpectedly closed. well i though ill just factory reinstall getting rid of the error. so Now i cant download anything on android market to get the explorer back because i cant use 3rd party apps again because my settings.db was reset! so i need lots of help.. running Ubuntu 10.04 so that makes the process even harder for a noob like me -.- any help is appreciated in advance
Hi,
I tried to copy an API to /system/app, but when I did that, the screen just blinks, and the file is not pasted into the directory.
I had temp root, and had remounted R/W.
I eventually was able to do the copy by using ES Explorer, but not with RE itself.
Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong?
Thanks,
Jim
Don't know if this helps but... I recently tried to do some copying of files using AndRootFile, and RootExplorer. And like you they did not "take". I finally figured out that after I selected a file to copy, I would use the back arrow button to move to the target folder. This was the problem. When I used the Parent folder icon instead to move back out of the folder, and move to the destination folder without using the back arrow button. the file copied just fine. Hope this helps.
Reggie,
Thanks for the suggestion, but, no, I wasn't using the "back" to get to the /system/app directory. I was clicking on the parent dir, etc.
Jim
I also am having that problem. I tried both the back buttons and the parent directory. Ive tried factor data reset as well. I wander if it has anything to do with the update yesterday?
Until we/someone figures why, you can use root explorer to mount, then the built in es explorer to do the copy...
Jim
I've been doing some stuff w/command line, and I noticed that my stock Gtab doesn't have a native 'cp' command, so you have to use 'busybox cp' instead. I wonder if that's why the RE copy/paste doesn't work?
Jim
SOLVED - it was no native 'cp'

Hi,
I just tried a test, where I created a softlink for 'busybox cp':
ln -s /system/bin/busybox /sbin/cp
I then was able to use RE to copy/paste into /system/app !
CAVEAT: I don't know if busybox is on Gtab by default...
Jim
At the command line us cp vs Cp. If you want to copy an entire directory, use cp -R /indirectory /outdirectory .

Hi,
That was a typo on my part. The 'cp' command (lowercase c) was really missing in my Gtab .
I've been experimenting w/alternate keyboards, and keep making typos ...

P.S. I fixed the typos ...
jimcpl,
I was just working on putting Market onto my stock machine and I am having the exact same problem. So far as I can see I have set it up right and followed procedure -- but files just won't move.
Now that I have read y'all's comments, I will try again a time or two.

Hi,
BTW, to create the softlink (using ln), you'll need to use adb shell. Or, you could use a terminal, if one's installed (kind of catch 22, since you'd need market to get a terminal).
Otherwise, what might work is:
- z4root to get root
- root explorer to make /system R/W
- kill then restart es file explorer and use that to copy the apks to /system/app
Jim
SIGH ... softlink doesn't survive a reboot
It looks like the softlink that I created disappears after a reboot... then RE can't copy again.
Sorry...
Jim

Did you tried the "RW" option on the rootexplorer? Or just delete first the file, and not try to overwrite them...
You can do this over adb too...
GL!
The R/W Option is Enabled! =(
UP! UP! UP!
First make sure u are rooted and then
try remounting the system by typing in terminal:
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/stl6 /system
NOTE: When u open Root Explorer a text should appear "Root Explorer has been granted Superuser permission"... If this doesnt appear check the su app for allowing permission to ROOT EXPLORER or u will need 2 reroot ur phone...
Go to the location where you want to paste a file or perform action.
Now click on Mount RW at the top of the screen. It will change to Mount RO.
Now you can copy files.
PS: Your need a rooted phone

it works on "/sdcard" and anywhere els. But not in "/system"
Any ideas?
Edit: actually in "Superuser" the root access has been allowed but when I start "Root Explorer" there will be no notification of giving the root access ("Root Explorer has been granted Superuser permission")

And how did you do it?
Got the same problem on my rooted Nexus 10 running 4.2.1 JB. Rooted it with SuperSU.zip via CWM and root seems to work fine.
Sadly I cant write anything to the system folder.
I tired to use the command "mount -o remiunt,rw /dev/block/stl6 /system" mentioned earlier in this thread but even with the use of "su" and granting SuperSU rights it wont allow me to create directories there. The mount command seems to work fine as there are no error messages but mkdir throws an error:
"mkdir: can't create directory 'test': Read-only file system"
Oh and there are no toast notifications about granting root access to the shell except the first time I typed su.
Anybody else having that problem on the Nexus 10?

i got a solution for this issue :
just install es explorer and turn on the root explorer mode then grant the permissions then again click on the tab root explorer and then a popup window will appear where you can allow permissions for each folder differently.

Dear All,
First thankyou so much for the great forum we have here, I am using Huawei Ideos u8150, the fone is network locked so I played around, being a total noob I started with installing sdk, and rooted my fone using z4root, rooting was successful
No when I try to copy a modified build.prop to the systems folder in root explorer, the file is copies but is not visible, also I have deleted the original build.prop & I am afraid to reboot the fone,
can restoring the fone to factory settings solve this ? also how come I copy the file to system folder, it gets copied and I still cant see it ?
I have tried pushing the file using ADB command line but the device refuses to mount (persmission denied)
I would really be thankful to anyone who can guide a noob like me, if you dont this forum has enough reasons to love it already,
cheers !

Moderators if by any chance I have placed this query in the wrong part of forum, please let me know in which part I should raise it, thanks !
In the top right hand corner or left it should be a r/o button. If you push that to r/w which is read/write you will be able to copy the bp correctly. Don't forget to mount as r/o which is read only before you exit RE. Then reboot. If you made a backup which you should have done before modding the bp you will be ok to reboot. If anything goes wrong just do a restore. Also you can Redownload the current rom your on to your cpu. Then extract it to a folder on your desktop. Then browse threw all the folders untill you see the stock build prop. Copy&paste it to your sd and that's your stock build prop. Hope this helps. Good luck

thanks a million for the help, would apprciate if you can point it what I am doing wrong
This fix Requires ROOT and Busybox installed to /system/xbin
Context: I have been looking for a way to make an app that hides files to read/write files on my external SDcard, The way I found was to edit the platform.xml file to add that missing line as guided here: LINK this is just one of the many articles saying the same thing. which helped some apps work, but not the one i was looking for.
Reason: the point of this script is to make it so you do not have to set permission to the "media_rw" folder after every reboot manually.
Steps:
1) Follow and complete guide linked above, or any other similar guide, if you have not done so already.
*NOTE* some custom ROMs have already implemented this fix
2) After reboot use an app that allows you to make scripts (Ex. Rom Toolbox) this guide will use Rom Toolbox app
- create new script, name it whatever you want. I named it "sdcard permission"
- input this line and save:
Code:
chmod 777 /mnt/media_rw
*NOTE* you do not need to put it as 777 but it is what worked for me as it gave full read/write/execute permissions
3) Set script to run at boot
4) Run script manually then check app to see if it worked
-Alternatively go check /mnt/media_rw to see if it has the new permissions
Now you should be able to access the external SD card after every boot.
NOTE: you may need to redo the guide in the first step after switching ROMs as the new ROM may not have the fix implemented.
Reserved just in case

I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 and been trying all kind of things to get to media_rw folder to keep its read writable and nothing worked so far. I did everything in you post to see if it would help/work but script not working. I can only keep permissions if I set manually set permission using root browser and then it working until I reboot the phone and I tried adding the script using ROM Toolbox pro but its not even changing the media_rw permission when run it.
This my first time using the script tool but to me seems to be setup properly. If needed I will get some screenshots of the script windows to show how I set it up. I am just posting this now to see if anyone can help or wants to ask some questions.
I know how permissions work in Windows and getting up to speed with Android. I been trying to make the media_rw folder r/w to be able to able to path it to my Titanium Backup folder on my external SD.
This looks similar to setting boot bat files in Windows so I know it should work but no go so far.
Heres the screenshots of my script that failed to run and the output file hoping to get some advice why script did not work.

also i just realized why it was failing on yours. make sure you have busybox installed to system/xbin
that will make the script work. or atleast should.

Honestly I am not to sure, I just assumed xbin was the right one as a lot of older mods and roms required busybox on xbin. so i tried it and it worked.
