I would like to request whether a similar function like the "Home app in memory" for "Spare Parts" can be extended to critical functions like the Dialer and Contacts app? I find it irritating having the phone to constantly restart the application when coming off the browser or some other applications. It takes a good 2 seconds to load it completely. I have tried clearing the logs etc. but I think having it in memory would really speed up its use.
Can such a thing be done? Or has it been done? Please comment, thank you

My solution is to download the AutoKiller app, and set it to whatever setting you like...go to settings, and find the running processes, long click on Dialer and select "Keep Alive"
Works for me. Always seems to stay in memory whenever I check running services. If you have any other task managers or app killers, be sure to "ignore" Dialer for those as well, so they don't close it either. Hope that helps. This is a great idea though, I've been introduced it along time ago, with no response, maybe you'll achieve otherwise. Good luck.

Thanks for the alternative solution However, I am hoping that it would automatically boot it into memory when the phone starts, instead of having to run it once before it gets shifted into the memory. Hope I am making sense... but I'll certainly try your solution.

Yeah, I tested your method and it works perfectly, just 1 second or less to switch. But as expected, I need to run it through Autokiller again when I reboot the system. I really hope that it can be autostarted and remained in the memory from the start. But that's a lot... this will have to do while we wait for a kind developer who may take pity on us on this matter

There is another app in the market called autostarts that you can set to start the dialer on startup, a long way of accomplishing what you want, but my work for you.
OP, it seems AutoKiller app will do this for you. Check this post in the How to configure Android's *internal* taskkiller thread.

My phone at times loads things slower than usual, especially the dialer app when I have more than 10 call log contacts, etc. I guess it is a HTC Dream problem with its now ancient 528Mhz processor. *shrug*
If a developer can help out on this, it would be great

It is not complicated at all.
1) Install AutoKiller
2) Start AutoKiller
3) Allow it root access permanently if it asks, relaunch AutoKiller
4) Click on Processes tab
5) Long press on Dialer
6) Choose "Keep Alive"

I understand the process. When I say it is complicated, I am referring to the need to redo every 5 steps whenever my phone is restarted. I restart my phone daily, and would find that having to relaunch Autokiller, and click this and that is more complicated than just clicking a box 'once' and not needing to worry about that anymore. In fact, this is the problem stated in the thread given under "durability". Thanks again.

I still hope there will be a kind developer who will help with this request. If the solution can be incorporated into a ROM like cyanogen's ROM, even better. Thank you anyone who may be interested.

I agree that this feature is a good idea and should be more standard. Making calls is the primary function of our devices and as such, I should be able to do it instantaneously. On my last non-smart phone, I was able to push talk and get the dialer in like, 1 micro-second. On my G1, I've gotten more used to waiting anywhere from 2 to 5 seconds.

I too have been looking for a way to set the oom of a few processes to -17 so they'll never close. I've used autokiller, but i too hate that everything has to be set after every boot. I've set the minfree values through custom_init on my hacked up version of StupidFast 1.2, and I'd love to be able to set the oom values there too.

as long as I am doing this, you can still use the rom from above... HTC dialer is just sooo much better when it comes to speed, memory consumption and usability...

hey guys not sure if any of you are experiencing the same problem with advanced task killer
but as the title describes, every time i open advanced task killer the same apps that i killed previously is on the list again showing that its in use...is that just the way it is or is there a way to shut those apps off for good?
and then on top of that, every time i kill the same apps the amount of available memory shows a diff #.
any input is much appreciated.
I think the closest thing you can use for now would be the auto kill feature lol but that's not an amazing option either! As for memory I've experienced it an all and perhaps someone can explain to us both! I'd really like to know..

Hi - I think that the processes that you're referring to in ATK are kindred of those found in the Windows OS and the like - they are processes that need to be running for the phone to function.
I too noticed the vast difference in the available memory fresh after each kill - I've pegged it down to the old rule of thumb, smart phones need to be rebooted every 48 hours or so - just like a computer, rebooting is the best way to free up RAM (or in this case, sweet sweet x10 memory).
Personally I reserve ATK for when I exit an app that doesn't in fact have an "Exit" option in it's in-app menu; just to be sure that the process has been killed.
Hope that eases the brain strain
ive started to use fastreboot.. reboots the phone without having to switch it off.. does it instantly and helps free up ram!
This does not really resolve the issue does it. I need to restrict programs to start on reboot, thats all I need. I know there are applications are causing the battery drain.

Figured this was a general Android app problem. And in case it matters, I'm running an HTC EVO Shift with stock room and rooted.
My problem, and this has been so since day one but its gotten to the point of bugging me too much, is that google maps will constantly run. i can kill it using taskiller, but it'll just come back after a few minutes. and normally with more than one copy. i do use it a lot which is why i don't just flat out delete it off my phone. however, it'll auto run its self without me doing anything.
for example. i can hit the kill all button (i've hidden the system apps) and it'll kill everything off and be fine and dandy. give it about 5 minutes and during which i don't even touch my phone, and when i refresh taskiller, maps is running again and is the only thing running, and their may be more than one copy of it running (aka more than one icon with the name "maps" under it).
so short of uninstalling it, how does one go about making it stop and stay stopped till i run it again? is there some program that's starting it? how do i find and destroy it? And yes i'm fairly certain its not latitude. i've never even run that program once. personally, i'd like to just uninstall it, but don't see it under titanium backup any where's. is it embedded in google maps or something?
When you buy a phone you should 1st do some research about it's OS, how it handles memory and all that. You don't even deserve an answer you know that?

If your phone works fine I don't see the problem. Android handles process killing by itself when needed. Task killing in Android is a bad reflex. Android doesn't work like WM.

1. You have the 'Let Google use my location' enabled. Settings -> Location and security -> Use Wireless networks
2. You have some app that is tied to Google Maps, maybe not Latitude, but something.
I also have Latitude, but I found that if I leave the 'my location' setting unchecked, Google Maps stays away. Once Maps once, though, it is there until I reboot.
p.s. You deserve an answer. I can't figure out why people who don't even have the answer go out of their way to point out that they don't like your question.
If you really want to kill map uninstall it or use titanium backup to freeze it.

What he said. Had Same problem on my inspire. Latitude killed my battery.

Helo...i am x Android fan boy...there is an option in settings, kill task or process until I start it again manually or something...don't have an Android device anymore so you will have to figure it yourself...anyways...but the option is definitely there, used it myself a few times...
And yes, you DO deserve an answer...people who criticize should be banned IMHO. Anyways...hope I helped...

Google Maps can prefetch map data when you're not using the app, so it keeps burning battery power and data in the background.
You can disable prefetching and switch off network location, but then you'd have to switch it back on everytime you need it. In some scenarios killing the maps app makes more sense.
In android you DONT kill apps/process's/services unless there is a problem with the app itself.
There is no point in using a task killer unless you want to waste your battery for some reason. That is why you do not deserve a answer.
Instead of being a jerk, you could have just avoided the thread. And, pretty much, there's no use killing it. If you're rooted, you can use titanium backup to freeze and unfreeze when you want to use it, but apart from that, inorder to avoid problems, just let it be.

Go to Settings > Location. Uncheck GPS and wireless networks. It should be good enough to not run constantly. BTW, task killers are bad. Who ever thought it would be a good idea to have on Android is stupid and who ever installs a task killer is stupid too.

OP, I would keep an eye on the battery use and if you see it there then worry about killing it somehow. If not then it is not doing you any harm. Your not in windows aymore. Lol
Unchecked network location, switched off map prefetching, disabled auto updating, but when I rebooted Google Maps still started all by itself to download a few megabytes of data.
Task killers are a waste of time for most apps, but Google Maps is an exception. Google Maps is really a misbehaving app that needs to be tought who's boss.

And for the record, at night I like to play games and could give a poo about the maps. The maps, however, cause the game to stutter. Pain in the rear. I do also notice the battery is draining fast on my Samsung S3, and on top of the consuming list is Google maps, and considerably a lot more than the next one on the list, so i too would love to stop that Google map unless its VERY important for the phone to work normally...

I'm running a cappy with CM nightly #104. I upgraded 2 days ago and everything was running well.
I installed Autokill memory optimizer to help keep things running smoothly. I set it to the aggressive preset and it worked fine for a day.
Today - out of the blue - nearly everything on my phone started 'force closing' email, gapps, apps when opeend, etc. Even autokill force closed after only being open for a second or two.
I uninstalled autokill and things seem to have returned to normal.
Did I miss something? I found a website that's a kind of guide for autokill. I like the program and think it should make things run more smoothly... but this was very strange.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: It started again with a few apps constantly closing (gapps, email). This time I uninstalled autorun manager and things went back to normal.
We'll see how it goes since I don't know of anything specific I did that would make that sort of thing happen.

The advice is NOT to use any task kill/auto kill app. They do more harm than useful, especially in newer Android OS.

Is there a better way to optimize memory usage? I have apps that seem to lag more on the newer OS after a min or so of usage. (EX: words with friends)
I would suggest the supercharger v6 script in android general section. Worked wonders for me. Dlev5, talon.

Android keeps things in ram on purpose - to optimize switching between apps. The apps are not actually running; they do not actually use any cpu cycles, they're simply memory resident so the OS doesn't have to retrieve them off the flashrom chip each time you want to load something. The alternative (removing an app from ram each time you close it) will actually force Android to retrieve it from storage each time you want to run it, meaning it'll use more cpu cycles, increase loading times, and needlessly waste battery power.
Android also keeps a pool of minimum ram free that it needs to provide a smooth desktop environment. It'll automatically kill apps and services in a set order if it needs more ram for itself or a foreground app. Those task-killer apps have been hurting Android's performance since 1.6.

Autorun manager is something I can't live without. You do have to be careful with it though.
Only use advanced mode. Basic mode is essentially a task killer.

Hi all ,
I really hope I'm not duplicating here, but I've had a look and it seems like no-one has had this exact problem. Please accept my apologies if there is someone with an absolutely identical problem and I've just not seen it. I have looked on various different forums however, and to no avail.
Background - I got my shiny new HTC Sensation at the end of Oct. Fell in love with it, and Android, quite quickly, as it gave me the customising ability that I could never get from my iPhone.
Issue - Every 6 days since I got it (a pattern I've only just noticed) the lock screen freezes. The ring and shortcuts are there, but no background - just black. No touch input works, but if I call it, it rings and the status bar responds, I just can't get into it. The only way to get to it, is to take the battery out and do a factory reset. This is obviously incredibly annoying as, even tho I have a good backup system, I still need to do all my widgets and shortcuts and blah blah blah. The reason I've only just worked out that it seems to be a 6-daily cycle, is that my provider have already replaced the handset once, and it still does it even on the new one. The latest episode was on Friday night just gone.
Current situation - On the advice of my provider, I am now using my phone without the SD card in it, and without any apps apart from the the stock ones. Then, if it's still running after a week, they told me to put the SD back in, and then get my apps back on in batches of 2 or 3. This is going to be a very lengthy process, and will therefore be a massive inconvenience.
Question - Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this? I'm a total droid noob, but I've read lots of stuff and spoken to a few people and I've come up with the conclusion that it might be an auto task killer that is messing with a process, or it could be something that tries to update every 6 days, but causes a massive conflict somewhere in doing so. I'm really just guessing there, which is why I have come to what seems to be the best source of info on smartphones, to see if any of you guys and gals might have any ideas on this issue.

a reset wont work? are you ROOTED? or Stock? if anwsered these im sorry its like 48 hour day for me right now and reading and even typing is putting me to sleep,
but back to your problem it could be something updating and causing the issue, if it happens every 6 days, on the 5th day go into phone and turn off background data, this will stop anything that wants to update in background, and see if that stop the problem, then you know it is something that is running that causing the issue
or possible as stated a auto task killer,
what apps do you usually have normally, a list of what you install on your phone can do eliminate of process

So, at the moment I am using my phone without the SD card, on the advice of my provider, to see if it is the SD card that is causing the issue. Could it be the SD card that is causing the problem? It doesn't make much sense to me as I can't see how a corrupt or problematic card would be causing such a time-related issue. However, as I said in my first post, I am an Android noob, so I'm not basing that assumption on anything apart from what I know about PCs.
One thought I did have, was that it may be my Zedge app. I had it installed on both the original handset and the recent replacement one. Plus, I had it set to an hourly wallpaper auto-change, and when the phone freezes, there is no wallpaper visible on the lock screen. Again, that is purely guesswork.

It could possibly be that app zedge, ans no can't be sdcard if it was it would fail on the spot , also could be avg virus scanner , I suggest clearing phone and just installing zedge and see by sixth day, if it doesn't try avg, I only can see those 2 causing the problem

Thanks for your input.
I have it set to one hour intervals (I bore easily!) and there are probably about 20 wallpapers that it cycles through. I'll give a go for a while without that app - although I've had a look for any known issues with it and I can't find any that are similar to my issue. I guess it could be a conflict with something else and I'm just unlucky enough to have the exact config of apps that creates that particular problem!

That sounds like a really good plan, only problem is, I have no idea how to do it.
What do i do after plugging it in? Do i need any software on my PC?

adb/fastboot/sdk installed, and when it happens just plug phone to computer,
go to adb directory(unless you have it set in windows enviroment)
and do adb logcat and it will output bunch of stuff and copy and paste it here

Well, I'm on day 8 now with no issues (really hopeni haven't jinxed it now!).
I haven't re-installed Zedge or the avg antivirus and I've kept auto-sync off.
