[APP] Instant messaging app that using SMS? - Nexus One Themes and Apps

Are there any out there? I loved the tmobile IM.apk back when I had the g1 but it doesn't work on froyo and the modified version uses data.
Is there anything else out there that uses SMS instead of data?

I know that AIM has a sms version of their protocol. you can sign on via sms, send ims and receive IMs all via sms. As for an application that does this specifically, I don't know of any, sorry >.<

+1. I want an SMS IM app as well.

Which protocol or any? I know AIM already supports this.

yeah aim supports it, but there isnt an actual aim app that actually does it for nexus rite now i believe. the official aim app uses data like many other third party IM apps.

In a perfect world someone would port the one from the G1 to work with froyo. Oh why did Google do away with it?

Seems like whatsapp is serious into getting onto our phones

Those in the whatsapp beta for Android should update your software ASAP, because they just put in push functionality for everyone with a 2.2 phone. Is this the only software so far not from google to actually use the 2.2 push function? (C2DM and the likes do not count)
how is it different to what its doing now?? i shall update soon after i finish charging

It doesn't poll like the old version anymore, and after some testing, I am getting my messages a little faster, because there is usually a 10-20 second delay when the app is sleeping, but this time it's like a 2-3 second after my friend sends me the text via whatsapp.
ahh right so there would be better battery life too??
Is the beta app available? Have they mentioned a release date?
Thanks

Whatsapp is probably one of the most useful apps for someone coming from a blackberry and misses BBMs. The difference is the speed but the main upside is that it's crossplatformed. Also the app is good for people that travel and have an open wifi spot. Free messaging to friends back home is well worth it.

Nope, but it should be within the next few months, it's already very stable other than some of the extra stuff like backgrounds, etc.

Yeah, since I have quite a few friends with an iphone and BB, I'm able to send them messages via my data plan.
AppBrain's Fastweb Installer uses C2DM too for installation of applications from your PC browser.
Anything that uses C2DM is immediately interesting, I'll check it out!

It's not using the same type of 2.2 push unfortunately.
hows it different?
EDIT: also seems like there are sometimes big delays between messages. whatsapp keeps disconnecting in the new version
I had to revert back to an older verison I believe. Newest version yesterday kept logging me off also and messages were stalled until I sent one out then they'd all come in.
Looked on the changelog and they took off the "Push Notifications"
Currently running: v1.0.6138
I'm using whatsapp on 2.1. working pretty well so far. ... thinking of getting 2.2 but no sense UI ROM for hero yet.
can we have a link to the apps apk?
Aww man, they removed push notifications via C2DM and the reason was they need to give google a quota? I have no idea what that means.
http://beta.whatsapp.com/test/7/WhatsApp.html
* google push disabled -- we need quota from google
really, what's the difference/advantage of using C2DM. i dont understand what's going on in the background.
Yepp.... just downloaded the APK from the link provided above... You can download and install it, but when it asks for your display name, you will get a message that says "Unauthorized beta user, DO NOT E-MAIL US", or something like that.
That's too bad because I loved it on my BB to chat with my iPhone friends, you would think that it would be easier and faster to create an app for Android and it would already be out in the market !!
it works!! everyone gets that message just wait till tommorrow and try again and it will work. Heaps of people have had success using this method. dont give up so easily
updated yesterday and they've been approved for the push notification via GOOGLE's c2dm.
Only thing i've noticed is that the app unlike iPhone's version doesn't time out while it's in the background. So it seems like you're always logged in. This could be corrected by a task manager app to kill the app but once you receive a new message it auto logs you on and double check marks the message as read.

[Q] Iphone-like smstoogle for HD 2

Hi! Since I don't like the SMS-function on HD 2, I was wondering if anyone knew if there is some tweek simular to what Iphone uses for SMS-structure? You know; where you can see "bubbles" with eachothers texts downside?

Yes but to make it work you have to uninstall HTC messaging client and in this way you loose the capability to send/receive MMS...IMHO it's not worth it....

If you add back in jaatyu mms works fine and full size.. the only issue is when you click to open an incoming mms is (seemlessly) kicks you over to windows messaging before it opens it. THe energy roms have all this done for you and works right out the box.

mmmmh, sounds interesting...(quickly) searching on google I haven't understood if Jataayu MMS is a free (and downloadable) app or not...is it? In case do you know how to uninstall HTC messaging client?
I havent installled kimi on its own.. i just patched it when mms didnt work .. now energy puts it in all his roms and all the patching is already done..
so im gonna bow out of this and plead ignorance beyond just knowing the name and knowing it has the potential to work flawlessly.

[Q] 3G internet-based sms client?

You know how tethering with PDANet allows you to use the sms client on your computer? Is there a similar app that connects via wifi/3g? When I'm at work I hate typing on that tiny-ass keyboard when I'm sitting at a full-size computer.
I use Google Voice when possible but I don't want my friends to need two phone numbers for me. I suppose I could just use GV as the primary...
Any ideas?
Look for smshare. I just found it three days ago, and it's awesome!

That looks pretty neat. No usb cable required?
No, no cables required.
The Data exchange is done over 2G or 3G Network.
But SMS isn't much data, so it won't hurt your Data limit.

Interesting... will check it out.
I have also tried bloove now, but i must say it is very limited if you use the free version.
No auto-Sync feature for the android app: You always have to start the app on your phone that the sms are sent. And also SMS are not stored if you have edited them on the webinteface.
The App has to be opened on your phone while you send the sms on the webinteface.
Smshare has all these features, but it's main problem is that the Addon is only available for Chrome right now, and until now it is not possible to send SMS directly from smshare's Webinterface. But according to smshares blog it will "soon" be possible to send SMS also through the webinterface. So i hope tis problem will be solved soon.

[Q] Iphone group text possible?

Does anyone know if its possible for us android users to respond "to all" when iphone users send us a group text? Or even see who's involved in the group text? I've searched and searched and don't think there is a way so I figured Id ask here in case someone knew of a way.

Whatsapp.. That should work. Dunno. Don't use official texting. Whatsapp should work though.
And tell them to get Android. Make fun of them. Show the beautiful widgets. Then tell them to show you a beautiful weather animation on their homescreen. In they pull down the Android rip off pull down tell them it's weak, full screen. It should be easy, you know. On your little dinky screen.

Trust me. I've done literally everything you just listed. I've been an Apple user since the first gen Iphone up until the Iphone 4. Whatapp does work but the Apple user has to download it as well. I'm trying to see if I can connect with their native group text. I guess that's impossible at this point since we cant cross platforms yet. Similar to BBM on blackberries. If there is anyone with any ideas, please share.
Currently we are using Voxer which is pretty neat. However, the iphone user still needs to download it.

I'm looking for the same solution. Does anyone know of an app that allows android phones to see iphone group chats as group chats rather than breaking everything down into individual text messages that way we can do a reply all rather than having to send the same message to everyone that is in the group? Thanks.
There's plenty of apps that do this. 8sms is my favorite.

Thanks for your help. I've installed the app and it looks nice. I still need to test it out to make sure it works with group text messages with iphones. But I'll update this post once I'm able to confirm that it does or does not work. Thanks

Android 4.2 messaging app does it natively now. And there's also the new Hangouts which allows for group messaging.
Android 2.3.6- 4.0.4 I've used NinjaSMS and can can confirm it works with group messaging. Again, there's also the new Hangouts app.

I'm currently trying NinjaSMS. Hangouts didn't work for my phone. I couldn't send or receive MMS which appears to be a known problem with a few phones. In addition, the 8sms app which was suggest to me also didn't work. It broke up their iphone group text to an indiviual text from each person. Therefore I still had to reply individually to everyone in the group. I'll let you know if NinjaSMS works for me.

RCS (messaging) on V20?

I'm seeing more and more about the RCS messaging (currently through Android Messages).
Right now it seems to only be available to Pixel owners.
I know that there are mods and magisk mods (google framework) that allow us to use other Google apps on the V20.
Anyone know of a way to use RCS messaging on the V20?

From what I've read RCS needs to be supported by your carrier. Model doesn't matter. You download Google messages and if it detects that your carrier has it implemented it then it will automatically show up in the settings for messages

Several things...and I'll probably miss some, so feel free to google search RCS.
Two major ones are:
1. It's more secure than SMS.
2. You can include more characters, attachments, etc., than SMS.
A minor reason is:
1. You see if the other person is still typing.
A personal reason is:
I have true unlimited data through an old grandfathered Verizon plan but limited SMS, so this allows me to use less SMS since RCS counts only toward Data.
So I enabled mine and got it working on my H918 on T-Mobile. However I'm unable to send any file that's bigger than 10MB (which was the stock max limit on T-Mobiles advanced messaging using the stock LG app. Anyone else have this issue? Everything else works (read receipts, typing indicator, and pictures I send under 10MB that send properly will show being sent through rich communication service).
[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[UPDATE]]]]]]]]]]]]]]
So apparently the only videos that won't send are ones that I've recorded with Hi-Fi audio enabled in the stock LG camera. Can any one else try this one verify. Not sure why that would matter unless it's more than just size restriction for the limit.

On rr7, los 17.1 and los 18 it's working. But make sure your service provider supports it.
