[Q] Legacy software: Journal Pro - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Themes and Apps

I have recently moved from an Axim x51v (WM6.1) to HD2 and am keen to move all my old, favourite apps to the HD2. Mostly I have had successes eg Recordian, Mindmap, HandBase4, Listpro, etc. Some glitches with selecting from the drop down calendar under HTC Sense were solved by a registry tweak, and the command display bar at the bottom of the screen was sorted in these old apps when I got spbShell. So pretty happy with the move, though I am yet to find a dibber for the HD2 that works - have tried 3 different patterns, all useless, but have not yet faced up to the high cost of the Digi Stylus which is the last type to try (foam rubber and solid rubber ends just don't work for me). Battery life is accpetable if I keep the juice hogs like Wi-Fi and BT only turned on when needed; the 400mA charging rate means I can use an external Lion battery Proporta Mobile Device charger in my case) if I run into low battery situations.
However ... I am stuck on Journal Pro, so the question is to someone who uses this ancient, but excellent app: how to get the display font to appear at the same size as the input font. The HD2 weirdly displays 2 font sizes in this app - one huge one which is the stored text, and also a reasonable size when inputting, one over laid on the other in the text window. There must be a registry tweak but it doesn't appear under Journal Pro, I've tried hunting the obvious stuff. Has anyone experience of Journal Pro?

Throttle Launcher

This is a great Today app, but has annoying habit of moving down the screen by a bar - see attached pic. Anyone know solution or not have this problem?
I liked it too... for the first 5-10 minutes or so. Gave it my best shot, tried many settings and options, installed and re-installed it a few times, but it's buggier than an entomology museum and eventually screws itself and your device up.
yep, i agree, funny and eye candy interface but heavy and buggy... i did it a chance but uninstalled soon.
Anyway, i got the same bug... there should be an option in the first tab of TouchFlo settings panel for the plugin heignt, you have to reduce a bit from full and manually find tne correct height, i can't remember the exact number now, sorry
for me is this great app:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=414342
WAD2
For me the best is WAD2, even if still in RC12 and a little buggy.
However I've 9 virtual pages, a dozen of docks (used practically as other pages), full of graphical candy, everything at 2 taps, quite all the functionality many previous programs had, and the best it's very easy to do the interface YOU want!
All this never going under 16-18 Mb free on a 64 Mb Universal using Tomal 7.7 ROM. The counterpart to having all this RAM is page switching isn't the fastest. But if I had 128 RAM (can't find anybody in Italy!) I could get off the "low-memory" management and have the speed in change of more RAM.

WM MarketPlace - Increased App Standards?

I was wondering, with the Windows Mobile Marketplace coming in 2 weeks, whether it will step up app standards, particularly graphical standards? Comparing primarily to the iPhone (sorry), and focusing on differences I find mainly with gaming (;}), WM's applications are behind in some of these areas:
Software Icons
WM 6.5 is a step forward graphically. The icons actually properly blend! However, I see many developers overlook icon creation. Well I'm picky, and I see too many icons with poor use of colours, jagged edges or edges that are blended to white (instead of transparent, if you know what I mean). And it can be done - SPB Mobile Shell replaces some of the ugly WM6.0 icons with fantastic ones.
Menus and Controls
The iPhone has games and apps that have menus that utilize scrolling and finger-friendliness. This is one of the issues with supporting WM6.0 and WM6.1 - they don't have WM6.5's kinetic scrolling. While some apps create their own scrolling (ThumbCal and Resco Contact Manager, quite a few developers seem to opt for simple menus. Most games I've tried that use menus or numerous controls on the display make them small - therefore less finger-friendly. Some of the great games I've played were developed without touch really considered - small controls & menus, not utilizing touch gestures and scrolling...
On the topic, how do options and settings show up on WM6.5? They are so ugly on WM6.0 (why I haven't flashed? I'm waiting for a final release of 6.5, based on the official ROM).
Graphics of the UI
Some games have proven to be kind of PSP-graphical standard. Not as in all the action, but that many corners and edges aren't blended properly (giving that jagged edge look). Some just look plain terrible. Sharper graphics that also look good are possible(Warfare Incorporated), but 1 game has stunned me. My Little Tank by AstraWare / Binoteq. It's a game that matches the iPhone in perfect blending and stunning graphics, and imagine if all WM apps were like that...
Unified Graphics
Many of the iPhone's apps have headings and interfaces that match the overall OS. It would be nice if you could identify an app as a WM app. Certain games (Warfare Incorporated) have their own UIs, and that is effective to fit in with gameplay. However, some apps don't even have a unified graphics within the app itself. If anyone has tried the game Towers Trap by Zone Projects (tower defense game), I found the graphics also superb, but the title menu (and gameplay controls) looked so lame compared to the gameplay. On a side note, there was rather awkward spelling in that - completion of a game gave the text 'CONGRATULATION!!!', and you could build 'ROCKET LUNCHERS'.
Fullscreen Apps
Is there a proper way to make them? I minimized some games with the end key on my Elf; when I maximize them the 'taskbar' of WinMo hides, but takes over the space (i.e. tapping the screen where the taskbar should be functions like a taskbar is there)...
Multitasking is a big feature of WinMo, hopefully it gets prettier (and admittedly I can't use it much due to the ridiculously under-spec'd Elf), but it should work right.
Price
At what price will apps enter the MarketPlace at? I understand they probably can't get as cheap as the iPhone's (Microsoft's price on releasing an app + a smaller target audience), but currently a good app can cost quite abit. And often I find myself using expensive apps to replace what should be perfectly fine with an OS (calendar, contacts, file explorer - you name it).
Oh well, apologies, my rant is now finished.
Uploaded images as attachments, sorry.
Anyways, what are your thoughts?

[Q] What Would You Like In The Next Update?

What would you like to be improved on your stock Sensation
Htc Sensation improvements & bugfixes
Improvements:
Android 2.3.4 or 2.3.5 (mainly for gtalk video)
Improved speed.
Improved stability.
Battery life improvements.
Ability to remove certain apps like htc locations, peep, friends stream, stocks, reader, dices & teeter.
Bugfixes:
WiFi deathgrip.
Screen unresponseness.
Mail app keeps storing the same attachments a 100 times!?
Please add things you would like to see in the next update (i hope someone from Htc will read this)
I just got my Sensation 3 days ago. Here's what I'm wanting so far:
- these 7 spinning Home pages - I cant seem to get a few to go away
- the phone pad covers up the speakerphone and end call/call buttons
- stop the BRIGHT light on start-up....make it black or something
- delete apps, or organize apps
- obviously the speaker sucks, so anything to improve that
- be able to adjust the auto-brightness - down some at least
- my turn-off automation doesnt seem to stop all the automation
*keep in mind i'm a noob, prob some simple answers to these I just dont know yet
I'd like it to feel like it actually has two cores running at a higher clockspeed than the Desire HD, instead of feeling slower.
Being able to remove inbuilt applications in the applications console would be great.
Apart from that, tis nice
I would just like to see them refine Sense 3.0, the home screen lag and constant reloading are too annoying. If they refined the launcher to use less RAM and fixed some of the bugs, I'd be happy.
you and me both...

this is the only phone, out of the EVO 3d, Samsung g2 and the LG G2x where the validity, or visible evidence of dual core speed is perpetually questioned. Whether Sense is not "optimized" or one core is working until certain processes need it, the phone does not, IMO, hang with its competition in its stock form.
ps- did I mention that I would like the FIRST FREAKING UPDATE here in the UU on T-Mo. Everyone else around the globe wants "another" one and we have yet to get our first (to my knowledge).
Speaker improvement, try and alleviate the WiFi issues, better BT support, and just overall optimization.
What I would like is to get the contact I am pressing instead of someone else in the text messaging.......... I have no idea how this is still an issue Oh and perhaps sense not restarting every time I exit a program, getting a little tired of the white HTC screen!

LectureNotes app

I'm curious about peoples' opinions of the app "LectureNotes" by Acadoid Developer and how it stacks up against the other main players in the active digitizer game. I've only been using my TPT for a few days' worth of note taking and haven't settled on a specific app yet, so I would like to hear thoughts on how you chose your primary note taking app.
i use ezpdf reader usually and just annotate my notes onto the pdf lecture slides.
if i need free form writing, i use free-note as it has keyboard + pen input
or quill if i just need pen input.
personally i haven't tried lecture notes, but it seems like MyScript Notes Mobile preloaded with the TPT
Wow, pretty good app. I didn't know about it. Thanks!
I've been using TPT for about 2 weeks now, and like the OP, I haven't really quite settled on a specific handwriting app..
Key uses for me are:
- taking notes during meetings
- something to help me in my Japanese language study
- some silly doodling/sketching fun
Some apps I've tried:
- Notesmobile
- Antipaper
- Writepad stylus
- Lecture notes
- Asus' supernotes
- Freenote
- Quill
For lecture notes specifically, I like that I can choose checkered pattern for the background and set the pattern size, as that is perfect for writing in Japanese.
But I found that it lags quite a bit when writing, and there isn't an easy way for me to scroll between pages.
So I haven't really been using it much in the past week.
For the moment, I've sort of settled with using a mix of Writepad, Supernote and Antipaper. Sadly, neither Supernote nor Antipaper has stylus only option
Still waiting for the one app that can do it all!
Might never come, but I can always hope, can't I?
I use Lecture Notes and have more or less canned every other note software. Lecture Notes just has way more features that I need. It can export in many ways. It can backup all my notes to dropbox, great support for inserting images and easy to change color, pen thickness etc.
Only think missing is better organization of the notebooks themselves. When that's here, it will be perfect.
It's also by far the most stable of Quill, Notes mobil and asus supernotes.
Personally, I have tried a lot of handwriting notes apps until I cam to this one. At that time this one worked the best overall in my opinion. When I first started using it didn't have everything it has now. But it was already robust and never crashed. I had one issue after a full system crash and reboot that wiped out the content of one notebook. But I simply loaded my backup from the day before without issue and kept rolling.
I have about 15 different notebooks on there now and I use them daily for work notes as I am walk around the office working on equipment or meeting notes.
It doesn't have the handwriting recognition features you find in other apps but I think that is what keyboard are for and I wouldn't write a document up that way anyway.
My good things list.
First, The developer is always adding things per user requests. Options for everything you can think of.
Second, it is being developed directly on the TPT and it seems to be one of the only ones able to be truly palm rejection friendly by only allowing the app to pull input from the pen (Option can be disabled for those that don't have a pen).
Third, and again the endless options... every type of custom settings, scrolling options (one finger, two finger, scroll bars and bar thickness), export options, backup options, sharing options, zoom options, page size - color - patterns, simple drawing tools, cut paste - copy paste, and on and on... every time I turn on the tablet it seems there is anther update to this app.
The dev listens to the feedback and finds ways of making the ideas work. I have submitted several ideas that have become reality.
It isn't free... but I would buy it a second and third time if I could just to support the dev team.
I see a brighter and brighter future of this app.
Hi folks,
I am the author of LectureNotes, I was glad to read that the app is useful for you. Sorry for joining this forum and this thread so late, but I learned only very recently that there are couple of forum threads related to LectureNotes.
Note that I uploaded v1.12.2 today with a couple of minor additions, the most important one probably being the possibility to choose the directory where the app stores your notebooks.
Best regards,
Markus

I am using the trial version, but i am already convinced of buying the full version. I have a suggestion to make :
The software really needs a laso eraser it will make it more feature-full
Dear trt44,
LectureNotes has a `lasso´ eraser, moving the eraser in a closed path so that start and end point are close deletes the interior.
Best regards,
Markus
Perfect, i just tried the laso eraser and it works like a charm, so i bought the software .
I have another suggestion : The software lacks the ability to draw basic shapes (rectangles, circles, lines...), and from my humble point of view, basic shapes are very important for fast and accurate drawing when taking notes.
Many thanks for purchasing the app.
The app contains simple drawing primitives, they are part of the pencil toolbox (as long as you do not disable this in the settings). Choose `Show pencil toolbox´ in the pencil menu to get the toolbox displayed, click-and-hold to move it around. A single click on one of the standard or custom pencils chooses the pencil and a double-click on one of the custom pencils opens the `Custom pencil settings´ dialog; a click on one of the drawing tools activates the drawing tool, another click inactivates it.
OK, thank you, i will try it once i get home.

OK, so far this is the best note taking application for android platform, it works exactly the way it should. But the UI is a bit ugly frankly you should work it more. A software like yours deserve a sexy fantastic UI :
- Attractive icons cause the actual ones looks dead to me, note Books icons for example looks horrible
- The ability to go forward and back in pages using forward and back buttons (more convenient sometimes instead of just scrolling or doing a notebook overview and select the page from there)
- Notebook overview should have an icon in the top tools bar for easy access
One last thing, when you use palm heuristic there is no way to zoom but using the zoom function in the menu witch have a fixed zoom ratio, i suggest to add a zoom slider in the top tools bar where you can specify how much you want to zoom when using (or not) palm heuristic.
Thank you for the fantastic software and keep the good work on .
Many thanks for your kind comments. I certainly agree that the icons can be improved, but I am not an artist and I do my best.
The app allows to go forward and backward page-wise by using `One page forward` or `One page backward´ in the hand menu; alternatively, to move quickly through your notebook without changing mode or switching to notebook overview, switch on `Permanently display scroll bars´ in the settings and drag on the scroll bars (the bar thickness can be increased in the settings).
`Notebook overview´ is just two clicks away in all modes (one click on main menu and one click on the item), I do not think that it is worthwhile to add an extra icon.
When using the heuristic palm rejection, one or two fingers gestures for scrolling and zooming are restricted to the hand mode, but being in this mode you can scroll and zoom continuously. Besides that, there is a zoom slider at the left side, you can change zoom by dragging it (the bar thickness can also be increased in the settings).
Just wanted to say hello to you Markus and thank you for your amazing app.
I am loving your app more and more. I appreciate your email correspondence about features I asked about. It truly puts you and your application above the rest.
Cheers.
I just uploaded v1.13 into Google Play. The major new feature is to allow folders of notebooks (and folders of folders of notebooks, etc.), but I also added LectureNotes as an image receiver (so that the app shows up when you share an image) and fixed a bug that could cause the app to crash when using a template for a new notebook.
To allow folders affects all parts of the app (notebooks board, notebook content view, notebook overview, notebook index, notebooks board index, ...). I carefully double- and triple-checked all features and things should work as before. Please drop an email to me in case you noticed something unexpected and I will do my very best to fix it quickly.
Best regards,
Markus
Sweet, I requested this feature cause of large number of notes
Works good, but maybe change the icon of folders so they stand out more from the regular.

This is a wonderful feature Markus that I didn't realize I needed until just recently. Love it I like the idea of changing the icon on the folders so they stand out more. I also love the new storage location setting, it eases my mind to know it is on my external_sd.
Also, I dunno if I am just being dense, but I cannot seem to figure out the navigation menu when enabled in settings. Within settings, under Settings > Menu > Enable app's launcher icon menu and it says it provides a navigation menu at the app's launcher icon. I've always assumed this was an extra navigation menu in the top left corner, but cannot seem to ever be able to use it.
Any thoughts?
I am glad to hear that you like the new feature.
In case you switch on the menu at the app's launcher icon, you should see a menu when clicking on the icon in the left upper corner (in difference to the case when this option is off, then you get a message that there is no functionality assigned, with the exception of notebook content view where the changed pages are flushed to the file system). What happens in your case? Does the icon highlight when you click on it?

It doesn't seem to do anything when I click on it, with either my finger or with the pen. And it doesn't seem to matter if I have it enabled or not. Neither scenario causes the icon to do anything. It doesn't highlight or say/do anything. It also does not matter what screen I am at, the icon never does anything. Whether I am within a notebook, folder or at the notebooks board screen. Odd.
Would this have anything to do with that I am running ICS?

How can you make an app believe, that a tablet is a smartphone (with root)

Hello,
I am visually impaired and I want to use a tablet as a phone, because everything looks bigger on a big screen.
But some apps look different on a tablet than on a smartphone.
They show more content on one screen if you use a tablet than if you use a smartphone.
If you then set large fonts and an enlarged display, elements overlap in the display.
Is it possible to use a tablet as a phone and make the app believe, that it is a smartphone when it is a tablet?
My smartphone is rootet and I have already tried some things.
I have changed ro.build.characteristics=tablet to "phone" (build.prop)
But that did not help.
Andreas
Change DPI. Lower means bigger. You can adjust that in developer settings, in the "smallest width". Play with that number until you find the good value. Keep in mind, every restart will reset that value to default.
Note that the Android's window size and the device's screen size are not the same. . For example, the area within the window that is used by an app can change if the window becomes too big to fit on the screen.

That is right. Tablets look like a large smartphone. The screen of my tablet has three times the space of the screen of my smartphone. This could mean, that everything is three times as big as on my smartphone. But that is unfortunately not the case.
If you then set large fonts and an enlarged display, elements overlap on the display.
I would like to have a tablet, that behaves identical to a smartphone and everything on the screen looks exactly like on the smartphone, only three times as big.
The tablet knows the physical size of the screen. Otherwise it would not know the ppi-Value. Does anybody know in which file this information is?
Maybe the tablet knows the physical size of its screen ( screen size ), but that's absolutely not of any interest in your case: it's Android's window size ( viewpoint - resolution ) what matters.
You have to find the suitable combo of PPI related to resoulution ( window size ). Both values
wm size
wm density
can get set in Android's system file
