With Android anything is possible.
However this would be very difficult because there are dozens of different Magic/MyTouch devices. Each with a variety of radios, roms and hardware.
You would have to design an app that would allow you to somehow download and flash an engineering spl from the operating system, without bricking the device. I think most people would not volunteer for this. I know that I wouldn't.

im a n00b but im wondering if this app can get you root with an app can you not update/downgrade your radio in a similar way as well than?

I don't think that you can upgrade your radio while your radio is active in the system. Besides it's very risky to update the radio on many MyTouch devices especially if you have a perfected spl.

How hard would it be to develop an app like this I know its a very risky job since a lot can go wrong. If you shut your phones connections would that not suffice in the radio being disabled as well?

there was an app like that in a sticky thread for a very long time - relentless rooter or something like that.
And then the dev decided that it should be paid for. Here is his website.

[Q] first post, 2 day owner of inspire 4g questions

hello
i have a new stock inspire 4g and i was thinking of rooting not sure yet. i used to have a samsung vibrant which had unknown sources option available thats pretty much all i would root the phone for im not interested in flashing or anything i would just like to use amazon market and some other apps. using a sideloading app would not work beacuse i wouldnt be able to install from amazon. i was reading and wanted to know if it where posible without making a goldcard using attn1 step 2 script (hackerize-ace setup-downgrade which if im not mistaken it will give you temp root until u reboot without having to actually downgrade) just imput in cmd prompt something to enable unknown sources? i dont need the option to be available in applications just want it to be enabled. if this is not possible and my only choice is to root then ive been reading some issues on rooting and wanted to make sure. if i use bubby's method would i loose sound like on attn1's method? im not planning on flashing anything after that so i will not lose hsupa? at the end of the rooting process what will i have the stock rom rooted with all att apps or the downgraded desire rom? and last how do i unroot and/or return to stock after this? again asuming i use bubby's method. thanks for all help in advance and sorry for all these questions i have done some reading on this great forum and wanted to make sure i understood correctly before doing anything

Check out my guide, it has a side loading apps section. You cannot root and s-off with out making a gold card. You can use bubby's GUI but its the same process essentially. If you haven't rooted you don't hsupa anyways, and only "some" people loose hsupa. After you root you will have a stock rooted inspire rom with att bloatware still installed. Also in the guide as well.
I like you didn't really want to root this phone... I had a captivate prior to this and never really bothered installing different roms. Basically just used andromeda.
But seriously, rooting this phone is much easier than it looks. It's just takes a min
There are also some pretty sweet roms floating around.

You'll need to flash a custom rom/kernel for the volume fix unless there's a Froyo version of something like this floating around somewhere that you'd just be able to sideload.

It's a great phone out-of-the-box, no doubt about it, and there's nothing wrong with waiting a while before rooting.
Learn how the phone behaves normally, make sure there's no manufacturing flaws, etc.
Chances are, though, seeing as you have already identified the limitation of being unable to side-load, you will eventually root.
It's a piece of cake, as long as you have your head clear and follow the process to the letter.

If you're not having any problems then there's no need to change your radio, unless you're just wanting to experiment. 26.06.06.30_M works very well with CM7 if that's what you're using now.
26.03.02.26 is what it is on. Is mine just a standard one? Should I put the other on

If you do wish to change the radio and Ril combination then check out this thread that I provided a link for. There is a lot of good information in it and you can grab the files from there. Just check MD5 sums before flashing.

Now that I see your radio version, I'm going to change my tune slightly. Your radio version is an older downgraded version leftover from the rooting process. It came with the first wave of DesireHD phones at the end of last year but never came with the Inspire (although it still works). I'd suggest putting 26.06.06.30 on your phone. It's the latest stock radio and works well with most ROMs. As Wolf_2 said, check out the radio forum.

I swear, this is the only "flaw" with the hack kit, and it's not the hack kits or Attn1's fault, and it's not really a flaw, more like an unfortunate side-effect for noobs.
This problem comes up so often for new people who root this phone.
They think they're done when they get to the end of the hack kit process, and then, low and behold, we get these threads saying "my signal/wifi sux," and when the baseband version comes to light, it's...you guessed it... 02.26
Most people figure out they have to flash a working rom, but enough people don't, to where these threads are a regular recurrence.

Are you certain the file is named PD98IMG.zip?
Are you sure the file is located in the root of your SD card?

[Q] I need help with rooting my Inspire

Hi there. I'm relatively new to Android, and i want to root my HTC Inspire. But i want to make sure i don't brick it or anything, so I've got a few questions about the hack kit.
1. the hack kit says i have to go to this specific gold card generating site, but the site has been down for a couple of days. I've found a program that would generate the goldcard for me, and its standalone from the web. would that be able to work?
2. when i read the manual, it says i have to install the stock ATT Radio, and gives me the path to a file, but i have no idea where to get the zip. In fact, i don't understand any of the option menu steps. could someone please help with that?
3. can somebody please give me to the link to a stable CM7 file, because i cant seem to find one...
4. there wouldn't happen to be a stable one click program that will do all this (perma-root, s-off, goldcard, everything) would there? Because that would make my day!
thank you!

1) you can try it. Somebody in the dhd section making gold cards with a similar tool.
2.you don't have to install the att radio though I would. It is already included in the hack kit you just have to run the optional menu. For other radios go to the radio thread in the Dev section.
3. Just install a nightly they are pretty stable at least for me. I recommend ninja as its based on cm7
4.no, but attn1 hack kit is really easy. It looks and sounds more daunting than it is. Its more like a 5click.

A radio not just specifically the att radio is what is used to pick up your signal for voice and data. During the rooting process we get downgraded inorder to gain soff. And applying the att radio gets you back to what we originally had. Though now their are newer radios for att. Radios depend on a lot of things what might work for me might now for you even if we are right next to each other. But generally any att radio should be good, but its not an exact science.
Nightlies are as the name implies nightly builds of cm7. Its Constantly being worked on that it changes so its not deemed stable. But for me and others it works fine as a daily driver

Newcomers please read me, a helpful little guide

While I'm seeing an influx of new comers to the MyTouch4G section, most likely due to newer phones coming out and picking these up cheap.
I'd like to remind you of a couple of things prior to just jumping in and rooting your phone.
Disclaimer: i am not a mod or an admin, just a humble "helper outer"
First Things First.Rooting one's phone is not to be taken lightly. When you root your phone to are basically giving your self SU access to the /system files of your phone. While this allows for GREAT expansion of the devices capabilities, you need to under stand that it can also brick your device in a heart beat. I know a guy who lives in St.Louis who said all he did was flash a custom font, via an application, on his rooted droid 2 and it bricked. You need to read, and understand what you are getting into. Because when the rubber meets the road you are the only one who can save your phone.
Secondly and just as important as anything else else.please install the ADB drivers at a minimum. TrueBlue_Drew has put together a very simple walk-through with video for this http://bit.ly/q7MP9t. Please take the time to learn the basic commands and what they do.
Third, and this can prevent some headaches down the roadplease go and check which eMMC chipset you have. Our phones where made in two different places, and have two different Chip set serial numbers. One of them is problematic and one of them is pretty safe. Please take time to verify which chipset you have prior to flashing anything. And yes it can be done without root access [http://bit.ly/y2zmdr]. Please see this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
Fourth, and this is where the rubbers meets the road. A)
You need to decide which root method is for you. There are two different proven methods out there. One is known as the root.sh method. This is the simplest method. the long and short of it is this. You download a packet, extract a folder to your SD Cards root directory. Then you download, install and run a program called VISIONary. after you do that you enter a simple command or two to run the script in the extracted folder. you can find that method here root.sh method now this method will work to turn your phone into a rooted s-off phone. and is super easy i used this method to root my phone with s-off before i even left the T-Mobile store when i bought the devices. However it only turns off the security flags. IF you flash the PD15IMG to return to a stock fashion it will remove all SU rights.
B)
the second method is a bit more entailed but completely removes the security flags. IT's called ./gfree method. Now you need to be careful because this will root a phone with a bad eMMC chipset. Meaning it will be easier for you to brick your device. If that happens you own a 200-500 USD paper weight. And as of currently there is no sure fire way to recover from it. you can find more on that method here ./gfree rooting method.
c)
ONLY IF YOU HAVE THE STOCK 2.3.4 (GINGERBREAD) ROM
you must downgrade to 2.2.1 before you can root your phone.
Please see this link http://bit.ly/rugejM.
d)
if you do not know what you are doing i would advise against the OneClickRoot for rooting ANY phone. It's a simple path to enable someone with no knowledge to root their device.
We are glad you have chosen to make XDA your source for all of your hacker needs. But please take some time and read and study prior to doing anything. We'd hate to see you root and brick your phone because you over looked something.
the Q&A section is used for just that Questions and Answers
the Accessory section is for just that Accessories devoted to the HTC Glacier
the Development Section is just that a section where you can find ROMS, Kernels, hacker, and PC/Mac/Linux guides
the App section is just that a place for us to talk about add ons and applications
everything else falls under the general section.
hope you enjoy your stay here.
Finally, and i wanted to post this separately
please do not be afraid of the search button or Google. Chances are if you've encountered a problem, or have a question. Someone has already asked it, or solved it.
Please watch this

If it does go bad there is good chance you can exchange it just don't tell them anything about you rooted the phone. I sent my phone in rooted with S off with a different problem and had no problem getting an exchange now I have this 2.3.4 which is not too bad but still figuring out the downgrade process I miss all the privileges with being rooted.

Great guide! It helped me with several questions I had, I was even able to check if I had a bad eMMC, I'm lucky I have the good one \o/
My phone came with 2.3.4, I really want to root to remove all the junk that comes preinstalled.
I have a question, if I used the root.sh method (which seems the safest), after downgrading of course. If I flash a rooted stock 2.3.4 ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1264704
Would I loose my S-OFF? Also to install the ClockworkMod recovery, is it the same way as other phones? ex can I just install it using the ROM manager?
Also is it really necessary to flash the engineering bootloader?
thanks for this great tutorial!

Once you have s-off, you will keep s-off until you manually turn it to s-on. So to answer your question.
No if you flash the rooted 2.3.4 of the stock OS you will keep s-off.
Yes you can flash it via the recovery image, without any problems. Just make sure to do a back up first.
It's not really needed, but encouraged as you can flash specific sections of the OS, or recovery image if needed.
Thank you very much for your help!
Everything went smoothly, now I'm in 2.3.4 rooted with bloat and ad free ^_^
The root.sh method didn't work for me though, but gfree worked like a charm (was kind of scared using it, but since I already checked my eMMC was good, I went ahead and worked perfectly!)

I wasn't able to find any. I think the doubleshot got played with this mySense crap. It sucks so bad its not even funny. If we could have gotten Sense 2.1 I would have been happy because that's far more capable than anything I've seen a dev do with mySense. Just my 2cents though

It is because of the Genius system. From the original MyTouch, the whole line incorporated the Genius system, which is a modified (and more powerful) version of Dragon Naturally Speaking. HTC and Nuance developed Genius, with HTC modifying Sense to provide hooks for Genius to work with, giving it many more capabilities than it could have by being just a slap-on app. That is why you can't take Genius and just install it on another phone, the necessary hooks in Sense aren't there.
So I guess the answer is no. I also want to ask will gingerbreak work on this device? If not is there a good one click root app for our device?

I installed HTC Sync to get the drivers
I used HTC's unlocker steps found here:
http://htcdev.com/bootloader/
I used Hasoon's little PC app to get the clockwork recovery, root, and to flash superuser. It's not the only way, and it's not much easier than other ways, but the app has useful instructions in it that helped a bit.
I used fastboot to flash kernals that I pulled from rom zips, and ROM Manager to flash the actual rom. Rom manager first, then fastboot.

I've tried the Rev Method twice and still didn't work and I need to know the meaning of flashing something and I want to use a live wallpaper from sense 4. What I really want is the HTC One S but as you all can tell I have a two year contract....so I want to get my phone as close as possible to sense 4 and that's what I will do. I will try doing that SU zip thing and then see what happens if not I guess imma just rely on apks and widgets and WidgetLocker

Try using different launchers. Golauncher is free, and has tons of themes(like skins) to choose from, and doesn't need root.
