The samsung vibrant comes with visual voicemail, but the captivate dosn't.
Is there a way to port the vibrants visual voicemail to the captivate?
I know you can use google voice for visual voicemail as well.
Visual voicemail is dependent on carrier support. ATT doesn't support it on android. The vibrant's Visual voice mail is supported by t-mobile. You couldn't get it working on the captivate without switching carriers.
I'm using google voice for voicemail. I just set it up today and I'm very happy with it. The voice quality is not as good as the iphones, but I was surprised how integrated it was. Its like it was meant to be there all along.
(and the transcriptions are usually hilarious).

Agreed. The transcriptions seem like they should never have made it in the final product. Errors aside, it normally gets the numbers correct so you at least know the call back number.
The transcripts are hilarious. You can usually get the gist of the message from them thoug which is good enough for me to not bother listening to the audio.

I was trying to set that up, but apparently can't figure it out. I downloaded google voice from the market, went through the set up, got online and logged into voice and found my google voice #. Changed my voicemail service from carrier to Google Voice. It then popped up for the number, I changed the phone number to my google voice #.
Called myself from my wife's phone, left a voicemail, it still went to my AT&T voicemail. I had to change my setting back to AT&T voicemail to access them and hear them. Meaning, my incoming calls were going to AT&T voicemail, but my phone was accessing google voice voicemail, which is correct.
I also tried using this guide that's for Captivates on knowyourcell (it was the first result when googling "captivate google voice voicemail"
but it didn't work either.
What am I doing wrong?

When I set it up I started on google.com/voice on the computer. There were a lot of steps. Maybe you should try that first.
You also have to set up missed call forwarding on your phone to your google voice voicemail number (they tell you what to do)

So yesterday I made the switch from using Visual Voicemail to using my Google Voice account as my Voicemail. So far, I LOVE IT (I recommend doing this if you have a GV account). My only concern is that I'm wondering if I need the app constantly running to get notifications of new voicemail? Because I have gbhil's kernel installed with the tweaked memory-killer, so I don't know if the GV app is always running. Can anyone using Google Voice for Voicemail post how they have everything setup? I want to use the least amount of battery with this, so I was thinking maybe only enabling SMS notifications of new Voicemail?

Yes, it is always running, and to be honest, it takes up very little battery to be noticed.

Setting this up forwards voicemail from calls to your cell number (not your GV number) on to your Google Voice visual voicemail. In my case, nobody even knows my real cell number, they just call/text GV, but for folks transitioning it could be useful.
Isn't that the same as using Google Voice for your cellphone Voicemail? Anyway, what did it mean by "immediate" forwarding? I didn't quite understand what they meant by that... and I don't want to see a $0.20 charge on each minute/call I use... my dad would get very angry haha.

I should probably say that right now, I have a Google Voice number, and I have the voicemail setup so that any call I get to my Sprint number gets picked up by the Google Voice number's voicemail... I hope that makes sense?
Yes, setting GV up in "voicemail mode" is a newer feature than when I first got my GV set up, but my roommate has his set up that way. It's pretty much the same but they take out a few of the forwarding features that you wouldn't be using if you're just using it as a voicemail service. (ring multiple phones and such). One thing you'll be glad to hear is that around the end of last year, Sprint decided to drop the charges on conditional call forwarding, as part of a "partnership with google". So, there are NO CHARGES when call forwarding to google voice.
Edit: I see what you're saying. When they say immediate call forwarding, they mean unconditional call forwarding. (forwarding all calls into your sprint number). What you probably want to do is CONDITIONAL call forwarding (forwarding calls when the line is busy, or when there is no answer).. So you've got [sprint number]->[google voice]->[your phone] Which will be charged because all calls are forwarded to GV, and then GV rings your phone
I have, (and you probably want), [sprint number]->[your phone]->[if no answer, google voice] Which doesn't result in a charge.

Hmm... I'm still confused about that. With the diagrams above, are you talking about someone calling me? Or me calling someone? Really I don't care about having anything transferred to my GV number... all I want is the voicemail part of it.
What have you done so far? Are you forwarding ALL your calls to google voice first, and then google voice is ringing your phone? (*72 forwarding?)
What I'm trying to get across here is that you want all your incoming calls to go to your phone first, then if you're busy or there it isn't answered, it will go to google voice, which will automatically pick up and go to voicemail when you have your phone set to "activate google voicemail on this phone" in your Google Voice settings.
If you currently have it set up to forward all your incoming calls to your google voice number, then google voice rings your cellphone afterwards, you will be charged for this type of call forwarding. You don't want to set it up this way if you're just using google voice for voicemail.
If you followed the setup that GV gives you for voicemail, they have you use *285555555555 (replace 5s with number you want to forward to. In this case, your GV number), which is what you want to use. This forwards calls to the specified number, after you either don't pick up your cellphone, or you're currently in a call. (*38 turns this off)
In contrast:
*725555555555 (again, replace 5s with the number to forward to) forwards all incoming calls to your sprint number to whatever number you specify. This charges you monies. Don't use this one. If you have done this, turn it off by dialing *720
Yes, I have the first thing you said currently. Basically if someone calls me (Sprint number), and I'm not there and they leave a voicemail, it leaves the voicemail with Google Voice. I then use the GV app to listen to my voicemail. I think I understand it now. So basically all I want to do is click "Enable Voicemail on this phone"? How would I go about setting it up so that all calls are forwarded to my Google Voice number (just so I don't accidentally do this)?

But I went through this same thing late last year, GV can be very confusing for people that haven't used it.

Quick question, what is the best way to set GV up so that I don't need to have Mobile Network (EvDO) constantly on? I only really ever have EvDO enabled when I need to use it so I can save battery life.
Well, I don't ever turn mine off, but I'd guess you'd just need internet connectivity to check and download your GV messages. If you don't mind not being updated the moment you get a new message, then there's nothing you'd have to do. (I mean you'll know when you get a missed call, if your phone is on, obviously) But if you REALLY need to know right away when you get a new message, you can turn on SMS notifications in GV settings.
Your phone still has internet connectivity in 1x only mode, it's just not as fast.

Well, he said he was turning off 'mobile network'. When I turn off 'mobile network' in my settings, I don't get ANY internet connectivity. I'm pretty sure it disables it entirely, regardless of connection type

Switching yesterday to android was a shock when I found out there was no visual voicemail for android on AT&T. Dialing in for voicemail seems archaic now. But google voice can easily take over your AT&T voicemail and much much more. You don't even have to use your google voice phone number to use the voicemail feature.

True, I didnt even think about that. I dont even know how to dial in for voicemail on AT&T. The entire time on AT&T I had an iphone that did all that stuff automatically.
Google voicemail transcribes which is even more awesome
Google Voice is great if you don't use Google Apps, if you use a Google Apps account it won't work with it, which is really a pain. I don't want to maintain two separate Google accounts

I used appbrain to download it, maybe you can try there?
So during the wizard to set up google voice I choose GV for my voicemail, and all it does is says no changes made and kicks me back to the GV wizard. I am unable to get this to work.

Did this earlier in the week. Here's what I did.
Install Google voice as you normally would but don't do any of the app's set up for voicemail use..it wont work. Go to settings>call settings>voice calls>call forwarding.
Leave the first option...think its Always Forward...as disabled but the final three options where the calls get forwarded to your AT&T voicemail...edit those so the number is your GV number. That should take care of it.
Be sure to write down your AT&T voicemail number just in case you want to change it back.

I don't believe you get charged per minute for call forwarding.
As far as the A List goes...I have no idea.

A-List essentially is a list of numbers that you have unlimited calls to and from. When I was on my iphone you initiated GV calls by getting a call sent to you with your caller ID, so I would add that number to my a-list and voila, free calls.
not sure how it works with the app though.
Edit: looks like every time you dial out of GV it uses a different 10 digit number so you cant abuse a-list...shameful! Wonder i theres a way to force it to use a specific number

Never had this happen before. So, somebody called me and left a message as I was putting a Rom on my phone. I didn't realize this as I was setting up my phone. I use Google voice for voicemail. After I set up Google voice, I noticed I had a voicemail but I can't check it as it's from Verizon voicemail. I've tried going back to Verizon voicemail. Unchecked Google, chose my carrier, signed out of voice, but everytime I try checking voicemail, it still accesses my Google voice one... Same ladies voice and same message by me. How can I completely get rid of Google voice and set Verizon voicemail back up? Thanks!

The forwarding is actually done on Verizon's end, so you need to cancel that first by dialing *73 from your phone -- it'll appear to make a call and hang up. Then just dial *86 to get to Verizon's voicemail.
When you're done with Verizon's voicemail, you need to reactivate forwarding by dialing *71xxxxxxxxxx (replace the x's with your Google Voice number, including the area code).
You can also get more detailed instructions by going to Google Voice's website, selecting Settings, Phone, and hitting Deactivate/Activate next to your phone number.

Since I haven't been able to get my Google Voice set up with this device for some reason, I decided to set up visual voicemail through AT&T's "Messages" app. I had called 611 to figure out why GV wasn't working and the rep pointed me to this app. So far, it seems to work fine EXCEPT it also grabs my text messages and missed calls.
I'd rather not have two notification for every missed call (yes, it pops something in the notification bar for missed calls, as does the standard phone app). At this point, I don't even care which one is going to track them, I just want to turn one of their notifications off! Has anyone figured out a way to do that? Or, alternately, is there another way to access my AT&T visual voicemail without their messages app?

You can set-up google voice here is how to do it.
Go on to google.com/voice and go into settings.
Click activate your phone, and follow the instructions (it will tell you to type in a code on the Dialer).
Then, install the google voice app, and run through the set-up, you will fail on the configuring voicemail steps but thats okay.
Call 611 (ATT Technical support) and have them manually change your voice-mail number to your google voice number.
Done. Enjoy google voice as voicemail. The app will work as intended.

I have Google voice only to be voicemail; I don't currently use it for any calls. It looks like my Voice call-in number is a generic voicemail call-in number (although tbh I haven't tried calling that number to see what happens). Is that the number that I'd give AT&T?
Yes you give them your Google Voice number (you had to set one up when you got google voice)
If you go to https://www.google.com/voice#phones
You should see listed your google voice number, and your phone that you need to activate.

I tried this, and now cannot receive any calls. I think that the number that's shown there is a generic voicemail only mail. Going to try setting up a google voice number and do it again.
Edit to add: OK, I set myself up with a brand spanking new google voice number, had to monkey around on my phone a bit in "call" settings in the settings menu to fix my call forwarding. I repeated the steps, but didn't have to call AT&T again and everything is working goodly now.
I had sprint before I got my One X. Google Voice was set up just fine on that phone, but I want to have it on my One X now.
When I go to www.google.com/voice#phones I see my phone number but the carrier is listed as Sprint. Should I just change it to AT&T? Then run through the app setup? Not sure what to do here...

It's the Visual Voicemail app that other android LTE phones use (Vivid, Skyrocket).
Caveat: Since you added att messages, you will need to uninstall it first, and then call AT&T and ask them to revert you to basic voicemail. When you call your voicemail, you notice the voice prompts have changed from before, yes? That switched you to a different VM system incompatible with the old VVM app.
When I called, they switched me to LTE without VVM - i was able to just change from my online account back to regular LTE (with vvm) and install the app and voicemail was all setup and I was ready to go. I'm not sure if asking them to switch you to "old" vvm would work, their system might only show that you have VVM already.
This aforementioned app does voicemails only.
I'm a new verizon customer who just came from Sprint. I've used Google Voice as my primary voicemail for years now (on sprint) and since google plays nice with sprint, it was a piece of cake.
Now on verizon it seems to be a huge hassle. I don't want to use GV to make calls. Sending/receiving sms would be great but by no means necessary. What I want to do is to use GV to playback/transcribe my voicemail...nothing fancy!
When I tried to set it up on my computer it gave me a number in a different area code and when I clicked "get a google voice number" and then "use my mobile number" it only gives me the option of porting my number to GV.
Am I just completely missing something here? Is it maybe because I used to have this same number set up as a sprint GV number?
Search turned up nothing but a bunch of fail so I thought I would reach out for some help.
All I've done installed it, went through the wizard and told it not to use google voice to make any calls, then when it gives a message saying google voice doesn't work nice with your carrier, you hit configure, choose google voice as the voicemail provider. Finish the wizard and you should be good to go. Google voice should now answer your calls and you'll have the voice inbox.
I downloaded the app from the play store and set it up through there. It sounds like you were trying to set it up at a computer

Yea, I was. Can't seem to go back now. I've moved on to youmail...no transcriptions but it seems to be working.
