Gmail attachments - Captivate General

I guess this may be a silly question. But if someone sends me an email with an attachment to my gmail account, I know I can click the "Preview" button and preview it. The phone will download it and play it. But how can i just make it download the attachment and save it to my sdcard?? Like I want to email myself a couple of mp3's then save them to my sdcard and use them as ringtones, or do the same with jpegs and use them as wallpaper. That way I dont have to be at home to plug my phone into my computer to do file transfers.

I don't have my phone yet and I've used WinMo in the past, so I can't directly help answer your question. But have you tried using Dropbox as another way of getting the same thing done? I think it has an android client. You should just be able to save the files in a certain folder on your computer and they automatically sync to whatever other devices you add the account to (including your phone).

You can't.
Try opening gmail in the Web Browser, then you can do it....

Get dropbox from the market and install it on you computer for easy OTA file transfers. Installs in seconds, works well and includes 2gb of storage for free. Also a good way to backup update.zips and .apks without having to keep them on the phone.

I found that by configuring the internal mail application (the one at your home screen) as your mail client instead of the gmail app will allow you to save attachments

You can't download certain attachments.
If you want to do that, navigate to mail.google.com, login and download the attachment.

i'll have to check, but in the gmail app i get the option to preview or download. i cant seem to get the preview to work, but download works fine.

Actually, you can download them. In the market there is an app called Blackmoon. Get it. When you hit preview, it will open a window asking what you'd like to do. You do have to type in a name and ext for it though.

Did anyone try attaching a video?

I can't attach a video to my email using my gmail. After I type an email I click "attach" and it takes me to the Gallery but the videos don't show up. What's going on?
I've also tried attaching a video right after taking it but it says "file too large".
I can attach the same video using yahoo email.
Can anyone explain this to me? Thanks.
Wow, that is a weird one. Not sure if it's a gallery or a gmail bug, though. I'll confirm that videos in the camera folder in the gallery don't show when trying to attach from the gmail app, but videos I have in a synced Picasa album do.
I've just tested it a couple of different ways and both worked. Have you tried either of these?
1) Open the Gallery app, then tap the video you want to send, then select the Share button, then pick gmail. Gmail will open to a new email with the video attached.
2) Use a file explorer app (like Root Explorer) and do the same basic thing as in #1 - browse to, select and share to gmail.
I used test files up to 20mb in size. If you've tried one of these and it's telling you the file is too large, how large is the file? Have you validated that gmail allows attachments of that size?

According to Google Help for gmail, the maximum file attachment size you can send through gmail is 25mb. That's probably your issue.

You're right. So, is yahoo mail - file attachment limit is 25 MB.
I checked the size of the video I've been trying to attach - it is 6.17 MB. And I still can't attach this video when I select it from the gallery.
If I write an email first, and then select "attach" the video does not even show. Pictures do.
Anyone???

I did the first thing and I keep getting message " file too large" although it is only 6.17 MB.
How do you do the second thing - I would need step by step directions. But does it solve my problem?
Thanks!

How do you exactly do that? Thanks.

Yes you can.
The question was "how can I?".... I don't see an option from the SkyDrive app or Gallery.

Launch the SkyDrive app.
Press and hold the album you want to send a link to.
If you want to just send a link to a pic, press and hold the pic.
In each case, you get a send link option.
Follow the rest of the on screen steps. Guessing you can figure it out from there and it just wasn't obvious to press and hold.

That should definitely be something that exists in the gallery app, not just Skydrive.
Yah I'm hoping more skydrive functionality will be coming later this year. I would expect in Apollo to be some sort of revamp. Skydrive is nice, but is lacking many functions that would make it great.
Directly No but indirectly you can do
Select a Picture > Long Press on a File > Send a Link > View Only
This opens up Email List, Select any and you will find the link which you need to manually copy and paste and then share.
or you can download it your phone and then share but that sucks on the double.

This is what I want to do. Point is you can't do it from the Gallery/Media which is silly.

You definitely can do this in Gallery!!
Go to the album where your pic is.
Go to the pic.
Select ...
Select Share...
Scroll down to SkyDrive.
Now I have got the SkyDrive app installed in my phone. Maybe that is why I get it integrated within my gallery. I am not sure you get this option without having a sky drive app. But if you do, then the OS will smartly integrate it within your gallery. There is one post of mine in 'iPhone v/s Mango' thread where I've listed all the options I get within the gallery to share. I think it's also mentioned as one of the plus points for Mango OS in that thread!

He means share pictures that are already in a skydrive folder. This is where there is confusion here.
In your pictures hub, if you go to a folder located 'on your phone', you can "share" and share to skydrive, which will put it in skydrive and then share via a link.
But if you go to a "skydrive folder" in your pictures hub, you have no share option. You can't share pictures directly from these folders as they aren't on the phone.
This is some of the functionality that needs to come with Apollo or sooner. You should be able to have all your pictures 'in the cloud' but have all the functionality of local data.

Ah I think that's expecting too much out of it!
Thinking of how it can be implemented:
To share something that is online, you need to access it. You could access things that are in cloud by using SkyDrive app. Then share it as you would. But the gallery which is 'sandboxed' into the phone doesn't have Skydrive access. I think accessing clouds via gallery might be difficult. However what is surprising is - when you scroll to application within the gallery, I get my boxshot (dropbox client) but not SkyDrive! That SkyDrive official app has to update and use the app-link features.
Yeah the skydrive app needs some extra functions... like moving files between folders

Yah, and it wouldn't surprise me to see the skydrive "app" actually just come integrated like that in Apollo. MS is very serious about the cloud, so I expect to be surprised with what they are able to bring in that area in the future.

You mean, so it uploads to Dropbox and then removes the file from your phone? I've never heard of something that would do that.
You can use Dropsync to make your phone act like the desktop version of Dropbox, i.e., whatever you put into a specific folder will automatically sync to a folder on Dropbox.

[Q] cannot attach pdf from Google drive to gmail on nexus 5?

I can easily attach a PDF to a draft gmail from drive using my galaxy nexus on 4.3 android. I can no longer do this since upgrading to the nexus 5?
I click attach in gmail, browse to drive, but my PDFs are now all greyed out on this new phone. Only images allowed. I really need this functionality. Any help very much appreciated. Thanks.

I have the same issue. You can't attach any thing other than images from a cloud service like Google drive using the Gmail app. Attaching local files that are on the phone works. This new integration with Drive has broken this.
Thanks for replying Kayno. I wasn't sure if it was just me doing something wrong.
A workaround is to open the PDF using drive and then save it to the phone, them use a file manager to attach it.
It was much easier to attach direct from drive though. Hopefully the app developers are on it.

Hope they fix it as I do like the new file picker integrated within gmail but that's no good if we cant attach any files other than images and videos.
Another work around is to attach your drive account to a file manager like Solid Explorer which works very well with all cloud accounts like Box, drive and dropbox. Save your file from there to your phone and then share it as a gmail attachment. I know this is also not ideal

[Q] Hangouts/gallery/Photos linked up mess

I have searched around and found nothing on XDA or anywhere else about this. With that being said, I understand the existence of Gallery and Photos. Not complaining about that.
Is there any way to keep Hangout MMS pictures from populating their own albums in the Gallery app? Here's the issue, every picture I send, creates an album with prefix Hangouts then the name of the contact. Deleting the pictures from the Gallery app deletes it from my conversation in Hangouts too leaving a white picture and the three dots at the bottom which means that the pictures can't be found. This is not only for chats, but MMS as well. Yes I could go get another Gallery App etc... But wanted to try and see if anyone has it figured out first before going down that route.
There is no option to only view albums on the device itself. Disabling the sync, disables auto-backup.
Thoughts or solutions anyone?
+1 on this, I was randomly searching around google support for this the other day but never hit paydirt. Its annoying as hell.
Edit. You inspired me to go look again. Go into the gallery app select settings and turn off sync with google account. Go into main settings/apps/gallery and delete data and cache. Reboot. Worked for me.

Thank you! While you solution does work and I have tried it, it isn't quite exactly what I am looking for. Reason being because I do sync my pictures to my google account considering I just blew through over 70GB in DropBox storage and can no longer automatically upload pictures I take. Basically, I am looking for a way to selectively pick what to display in my Gallery app(I don't want anything Picasa/Google+/Hangouts/Photos in there). Since the intro of the Photos app which is mostly tied in with G+, it shows everything online, and if they are going to keep the gallery app, then they should at least allow it to be used for offline images available on the device(Just like Play Music has, where it gives you the option to to use music on your online account or what you have on your device).
Unfortunately, the dependency of the camera app on the gallery app, makes it impossible to revert back to a previous version of the gallery.
Ah, sorry about that. Not sure how you can pull that one off, I sure didn't see mention of such when I was searching.
Try making a .nomedia file in the picassa folder where it downloads the pics. And same to every other folder you don't wanna see in your gallery. This will help you select what displays along with auto sync enabled.

It creates one for every contact I send a picture to in Hangouts.
That's going to be a lot of files to be created. I guess there is no other way. Unless I just install another gallery.

No it's not like that. You would have to copy paste only one .nomedia in the main folder of the data file of hangouts and one in picassa.
