How is the GPS working on your phone? - Captivate General

In all the threads I've been reading about the issues with the GPS, I keep seeing a few people chiming in that they have no problem, and other saying that the GPS is so bad it is unusable. Since I'm still up in the air about what phone to get (b/w the Aria and Captivate), I'm wondering how many people have 'working' GPS units vs. not.
In addition to voting in the poll, add a post if you can saying where you are and what kind of environment you're in (urban/rural, indoor/outdoor etc.).
EDIT: Make sure to vote if you post! I see a few posts already claiming good reception, yet the poll still shows 100% unusable.

Mine sucks. If I do get a lock, it takes about 2-5 mins to get one.. I have tried the tweaks posted but did not work for me

I live in the suburbs, (not exactly urban) and it does not work at all. However, upon doing diagnostics in the hidden GPS settings I found more then 7 satellites are in view leading me to believe this is a software problem. Since it will get fixed later this year (and the Samsung Captivate is a far better spec-ed phone) I'd go with the Captivate

I don't think I have any issues. when I'm out in the open the app typically takes less than a minute to acquire my location and I'm off. Even inside my house if I am next to a window I can usually get a signal, which is something I didn't think was possible with GPS. I live in the bottom floor of a two story apartment building and my old phone could just forget about trying to acquire a signal inside any building, and I thought that GPS was pretty solid. I also have not performed any GPS tweaks.

Mine works fine. Gets a lock on 7 sats while inside my house within a minute. Its rooted, but I have done no tweeks to the GPS at all.
(Sent from my Captivate with XDA app)

I'm n the suburbs. I get 9 satellites and lock in under 30 secs. most of the time. Under 10 secs some times.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897

Mine's working amazingly. Connects within 10 seconds and is only off by about 5-10 ft.
I'm rooted and I did the gps.conf hack and these are my current Application and supl/cp settings:
APP>Operation Mode>MS Assisted
APP>Accuracy>20
APP>Use SkyHook>ON
supl>Server>supl.google.com
supl>Server Port>7276
supl>supl Secure Socket>OFF

Crappy. I get 7 sat, but they come and go and never fully lock. Only time it seems to work is when im standing outside in an open field.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App

if I'm driving around (when its important) i'll get a lock. I usually have to restart maps or copilot though.
in my house though...forget it haha

Screenshots or pictures please. I no longer trust anyone. I've seen too many videos of people claiming they have x number of locks when in fact they are confusing the number in view and the number actually locked to. You're probably telling us the number of sats in view, not the number of locks you have.

I had 5 within 10 seconds, 7 at 30secs and 9 after ~90secs. I'm assuming they are locked, correct me if i'm wrong.

You have 9 satellites in view but are only locked to 3 (denoted by *). That is the whole problem with the Galaxy S phones. They have no problem seeing satellites, but they never lock to very many.

Compare to the Aria I had for 28 days, the GPS sucks on the Captivate. It usually take 1-5 min to get a lock while it never took more than 1 min on the Aria. I use RunKeeper to keep track of my walks and I usually lost the first few minutes of tracking.

Voted unusable. Over the weekend on a road trip to the beach I think I was able to get a lock ONCE the entire time.
Right now I'm in GPS Test and I have 8 satellites in view and 0 in use, 6 of which have a signal of 30+. It's been running for about 1-2 minutes. I've never seen that many satellites with that high of a signal and no lock. And just now while I was typing this, it lost all the satellites and dropped to 0 and is only picking up 4 (in view of course, not in use) now after 30 seconds or so.
This needs to be fixed. Messing with those settings isn't fixing the real issue, IF it's doing anything at all.

satellite Expire after 7 Days ?

Hi All,
when i download satellite , it expires after 7 days.
is there any fix to keep the satellite for longer period ?
or any other method to never expire the satellite .
thanks
You don't download satellites
What you're talking about is QuickGPS which is meant to support a faster GPS-fix.
YOu can set within the options of QuickGPS, that your data is updated either after a certain period automatically or always when you connect it to your PC.
It needs you internet-connection.

yes it is QuickGPS which i was trying to refer to.
it expire after 7 days... then my tomtom does not work.
can you please give me some tips how can it be fixed ?
thanks
Just enter QuickGPS, click menu and alter the update settings to fit your needs.

I really don't see your problem. When I enter QuickGPS I see this screen:

There you just have to check the box within the red rectangle. Then you'll never have to care about QuickGPS anymore - updates work automatically then.
thats just quickGPS data to help u lockon to data faster
He thinks that his tom tom doesn't work anymore after 7 days. correct me if i'm wrong.
I really don't see what your problem is here. The QuickGPS data is simply there to get a faster GPS fix. The data will automatically download every 7 days, and you can change the settings. It's very simple.
If TomTom is the problem, then contact them. But I highly doubt that QuickGPS is the problem.
he wants the data not to expire after seven days!
i think he's not asking for an automated update.
like the others said: quickgps is just for getting a FASTER satellite-fix. if the data is expired, the fix might take (a lot) longer. tomtom will work with expired data, but taking a long time to get fix might let you think it doesn't work.
as far as i know, there's no way to "keep" the satellite data longer. it needs to be refreshed after a max of seven days (du to the satellites moving around in orbit and changing their position maybe).
well tecnically the data never realy exspires if you tick all the boxes becouse when ever you connect to your pc or wifi the data will update automatically, so there is no problem?
also i have been using tomtom since my wizard days and yes sometimes you do get the delay in getting signal lock but i have never had any issues with my hd2
thank you guys.
so basically if its expires, my tomtom will work without any problem ?
if thats the case then i think i need to update my hd2. and clear any registry leftover,
thanks again for all your help
QuickGPS Just help GPS fix sooner but GPS can still work without it, In that case TomTom take you longer time to get an acurate fix. I usually start Gmap first, it work with both AGPS(almost get a fix at once, based on your 3g connection), and GPS, when GPS fixed, I start my navigate program. Hope these help.

i do not have 3G connections.. i bought this phone @ full price.
is there any possible way out there to get quick gps signal ?
i do not have 3G connections.. so its a problem for me if the satlite expire after 7 days..
Another advice is to stand still in open ground in order to get better GPS signal (when your HD2 start searching for GPS), usually take me about 40 seconds to 1 minute and a half to get an accurate fix without AGPS or QuickGPS data. It's very quick even compared with professional navigate device.
Satellites don't expire after 7 days but need to be refresh !
Check the activesync box and connect your phone to your PC just before using TomTom then satellites will be update.
I have never downloaded quickgps anyway . my HTC finds me on GARMIN XT
between 2 and 6 SECONDS . I have signal inside my 2 story house . I used to have pharos traveler 127 with gps and if I lay it down it loses signal . This HTC
has Kickass GPS . I dont even think there is any use for quick gps on this device .

Isn´t it a miracle how many people are breathing precious air and walk over the planet Earth without knowing what they are doing and without any will to research what´s behind an issue ???
Reminds me to the iPhone vs EVO - cartoon everytime I read posts like this
- Change HKLM\Software\HTC\QuickGPS "ExpiredTime" from 10080 to whatever value you want. value is in seconds, i.e 1440 for 24hrs.

[Q] Snapdragon S4 unlock GLONASS ?

Hi, i am new here thefore i cant post in "One S Android Development"
I KNOW that (HTC one s)Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 has support for GLONASS. can it be unlock ?
anyone known what soundchip it got onboard also ?
Appreciate the help.
Are you sure it needs unlocking? Mine said on the box "Supports GPS/GLONASS". Not that I have any idea how to check.

Download GPS test from the market.
Fire it up and see if you log any satellites numbered 65 to 88.

My Htc one s, havnt arrive yet, i still waiting, i think it would come next week, then i can do the gps testing. It would be nice to hav a good gps.
I am using Samsung galaxy s1 and its worthless in sweden..
Btw i hope Snapdragon s4 get Wolfson audio chips
My HOS IS showing satelites number 69 and 71... are those GLONASS sats
Out of 15 satellites that I could see, 6 were #65 or over. Looks like GLONASS is working fine.
Edit: Just to clarify, I'm in Japan, but my phone came from the UK so is the European model (No One S for the poor Japanese, lol)
So it works completely transparently to the user and does not need special software or adjustments, it will just work by "supplementing" the accuracy reported through the GPS interface and therefore also every navigation software etc. will automatically benefit from it?
That is kinda cool if its the case.
This is going to be GREAT for once i can use "GPS" correctly in sweden, anyone knowns more about the Sound chips onboard the S4 ?

Yup, looks like it. There is no separate setting to "Enable GPS" / "Enable GLONASS". Although rather than being transparent to the user, it is more like hidden from the user. I guess the average user neither knows nor cares about GLONASS, as long as the thing shows them where they are on the map.
I do not get satellites > 28, but total 22 visible and 14 in use.
Don't know if GPS or GLONASS - but 22 are a lot
My HOS consistently sees ~17-21 even when indoors although while indoors I get no GPS lock even though GPS Test says that it uses ~5 satelites. But once I take it to a window it gets a good lock immediatly.
My old Desire and my TF101 only sees ~4-5 when doing the same test. So it seems that the HOS really are using GLONASS too.
Yes they do. With GPS only I never had a situation where I could "see" more than 6-8 sats at once with a mobile and not all of them had a fix/lock because the signal was too weak (only once supposedly had 9, reported by an Audi in-car satnav with dedicated external antenna, but I am not sure if that was fixed sats or just the visible ones). I think as of now I think there are less than 30 functional sats in orbit globally and the GPS architecture hovers around an amount of 32-36 sats maximum (with higher coverage of landmasses and lower coverage on the oceans).
Also, GLONASS will be very beneficial to anyone in the upper northern hemispere, and lower southern hemispheres as the system is of course globally active, but due to sat orbit inclination and distance (orbit heigth) it allows a better coverage of the regions closer to the polar regions, while GPS seem to be more designed to cover the "middle ground" and also have a lower orbit.
And when the US went to war in the middle east, I think I have read about some of the satellites being repositioned to give a better signal feed to the troops and equipment in that area, therefore automatically neglecting the rest of the world a little bit.
This is a really good feature I did not even read about in the reviews prior to purchasing. I pity the folks with the One X who don't have that... It will double satnav usability and accuracy even in less than optimal conditions (cities with high buildings covering satellite line of sight etc.)

[Q] GPS - 12 satellites, no lock ever

I know this topic has been beaten into the ground but I think my problem may be slightly different. Within seconds I get a whole bunch of satellites in view between 22 and 34 SNR but I NEVER get a lock, I can leave it for half an hour and nothing happens.
I know the hardware works because it worked (badly) when I was running Froyo Audiophile. I just flashed Valhalla Black FB Edition and I get the satellites beautifully fast (way better than before) but it just won't lock. I've tried:

A bunch of sites giving different setting configs.

GPS Doctor (Paid)
One thing I did notice is that in GPS Aids it won't do XTRA data, just LTO, and it's own GPS Doctor couldn't fix it. Another thing I noticed is that in GPS Test, it won't show the satellites on the map, it shows them on top of each other above the map (in the SNR scale box). Below I have a picture and video of this happening.

I've been manually copying the files in, and ya I copied them in again after trying all the fixes. I read through the notes thoroughly now, tried the cache wiping, battery out, etc...
Currently I'm trying out a whole bunch of different versions of the file(s), and then I'll try flashing a different ROM. Is there one you can recommend? This is the list I'm going off:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-T959V/List_of_ROMs
I'm not sure if I should switch back to Froyo or not, and the only stock Gingerbread one I see doesn't seem to be deodexed.
Thanks for the response.
Alright, well after flashing back to stock gingerbread then stock froyo I got it back to its slow self. Then flashed back up to valhalla and working but slow. Added in google 3.1 no ssl and hasn't done too much, but at least I have GPS again and I can go through all the notes and see if I can get it working a bit faster. At this point it still waited for 9 connections (5-10 minutes) to lock 4 of them.

If stock and/or stock plus this patch cannot resolve your problem, I would venture a guess that you have a weak GPS receiver.

Gps issues !! Help!! Please

I was hoping to find some information about alternative methods on correcting my GPS. I know android gps is not 100% accurate and i have tried everything to get dam close but i cant seem to make any progress back to the way it was when i first flashed CM 10.2. Everything i have tried sometimes seems like it worked but later proved wrong once i actually get out and drive around.
*
Things i have tried:
1) Reload stock based rom aquire lock and revert back to current rom.
2)reload stock based rom aquire lock and reboot and clean flash 10.1/.2
3)Navigated to system/etc and edited my gps.conf
4) Used GPS ToolBox to clear a-GPS data/download a-GPS data.
*
I notice on Google maps while driving i zig-zag on the map while moving. - _ - _ - _ - kind of pattern.or somethimes i am not even in the road but infact driving through peoples houses.
*
When i load up GPS Tool box get a lock i notice something odd about my speed(mph). At idle i am consistantly moving up and down from 0.0-->0.6-->1.1 mph. My accuracy is usually <30ft while idle. Moving its all over the place. Its also hell trying to drive in Dowtown areas with one way streets. My GPS will tell me to make a right as soon as im about to make the right it quickly will tell me to goto the next street and make a left now im in the wrong lane. I tried to find a place in St Pete and i ended up in Clearwater at a simlar street name.
*
i have not tried any other Roms other than CM 10.1 10.2. I did have this same problem on 10.1 but when 10.2 was an availavble optoion i quiclky upgraded and my GPS issues were gone. Something has happened in the last week or 2 and my gps state never seems to change no matter what i do to try to correct it.
*
The only thing i did not try is flashing a new radio. I have not seen any available radios to flash if there are please point me in the right direction.
*
I also play Ingress on the side and i notice the same problems translates over the game as well. Most of the time if i stop at an intersection and load up the game or have it already open im consistantly shifting around foward/back/left/right. i cant stay still. This is where the drifting is more present. Im always shifting around drifting off the road into houses or stores or whatever is on that particlar road while driving. Alot of the times i wont even move for a few seconds and then the GPS catches up but is usually lagging behind me. For instance ill pass through an intersection and my gps will pass through the same intersection a few seconds later. I also cut corners. What i mean by this is if i make a left onto a new road instead of my gps turning with me its lagging behind and cuts the corner of the turn instead of following me on the road making the left.
*
Im not sure what else i can do. The phone has only suffered 1 drop and it was from my lap to a raised floor sitting in a booth at a restaurant. I find it hard to belive that how rugged this phone is that a single drop could jar the gps out of wack.
*
Any help would be appreciated

Does this happen on stock as well? Sounds almost like a hardware issue to me. If it's on multiple programs especially.

Yes it happens on stock and just about any ROM or app using the GPS. Have you heard of others having hardware issues? I'm still under warranty, any suggestions?

If it happens on stock rom, then it´s very, very likely a hardware issue. Try to reset everything with GPS Status from the Play Store, if it still doesn't work then make sure to be smart quick about making the most of your warranty, and get it fixed asap!

Thanks for the replies. I am the OP from droidRzr.com forums. I am currently running nexusesque and I have the same problem. No matter what ROM I flash there is no change to my GPS state. I am starting to think its a hardware problem. I have tried every GPS app and it makes no difference. Stock OEM was the worst GPS experience BY FAR which is why I rooted. Google maps always shows me off of the road while driving or stopping at an intersection I'll be in the grass or a building. GPS status shows my altitude is never solid. I live in Florida and I find incredibly hard to believe I am 200+ ft MSL sometimes 400+. Its constantly moving up and down as well as my MPH alternates between 0.0-2.9 MPH while sitting stationary. I might might have to unroot and return the phone. I feel there is no fix due to it being a hardware problem. I will try a few more things but I think they will yield the same results.

It´s a hardware issue because of a faulty unit most likely, if it´s happening with the Stock ROM. This phone has one of the most accurate GPS units I´ve ever had in any phone. This was taken, for example, at 34,000 feet going at 600 miles per hour. Check it out:

Well quick update.I reloaded my cm10.2 10/28 nightly which is the ROM/release I had the best luck with and I removed every app that requires GPS permissions( i did have a few) and it has seemed to improve it slightly. Not sure if it's the placebo effect or what. I am however locking on to more available SATS then I previously was( 5-8 out of about 21 SATs). Now locking on to about 11-14 SATs. My altitude is still jumpy though and my mph still fluctuates but not as bad. The gps signal strength has also seemed to improve. My error is usually around 10m. I'll give it a few more days and see what happens.
Sent from my XT926 using xda premium
Well i let it run for a few days and it's back to what it was doing before. I'm just going to drop root and get a replacement. This has to be a hardware problem there is no other explanation to why the GPS can't track my location. I zig zag on and off the road.
Sent from my XT926 using xda premium
I took some screenshots in 1 to 2 second intervals of me standing in my driveway. One is me driving with the app scanner open(as you can see im not even on the road). As you can see my elevation is non stop climbing. Speed seems stable(except the pic i lose a bunch of aval. SATS). This is running the Pac-Man roms latest nightly. I start at 6 MSL and climb all the way up to 42MSL and i begin to lose locked SATS. Note 1 picture my speed is 1.1 MPH and im standing totally still. Even when i think its working properly i am proven WRONG once i start driving. The zig zaging begins to show. Stop at an intersection my GPS just keeps moving. This i think is due to my elevation not being stable. Then begins the MPH dance of 0.6 up to 1.1 and back down. Its completely unstable
GPS Compass on CM11 appear to not be working
Hi,
I was hoping to post it directly in the Android Development CM11 thread but my post count is too low at the moment.
I've tried installing CM11 twice now, full factory reset/wipe. It appears that the compass was completely disabled - no direction indicator on Google Maps, just location dot. No dynamic direction control on Ingress.
Has anyone else noticed any compass issues on AOSP 4.4 based ROMs or CM11 in particular?
Regards,
Marek

Okay.. for hours of driving up the Queensland coast, and bing ..
Dodgy GPS module right.. I need to replace
Very occasionally I need to reboot my unit to get GPS. I don't know what it is. Maybe something going wrong in kernel memory.
As I am a very impatient guy, I reboot my unit already after 3-4 minutes. I think that happened now 3-5 times in the past 7-8 months.
Note that I do not have a Teyes, but the hardware and accessories is/are the same for all FYTs.
Edit: This also happened occasionally on my previous FYT sc9853i.
Thanks Surfer. I hit the reset three times, and checked after five minutes. Then since I needed a rest break driving Brisbane to Bowen (1150km), I reset and turned the car off for five minutes before reboot.
Nothing...
3 and half hours later I physically removed the fuse, but again the gps unit only came back after 30 minutes or so.
You're probably spot on with some kernel bug

And maybe the simplest reason/issue: Check the connection: Is it correctly fixed?
Check your cable and lead it through your fingers: do you feel sharp bends, or broken fiber/cable inside the cable?
Do you have a GPS antenna from a previous unit? try it with that one.

Thanks man. Love it.
Yes, when I pulled the fuse I checked the security of the SMA connector.
When I started in IT we still had 10BASE2 and 10BASE5 on a Sperry mainframe. So I have the knowledge about bend radius and not over tightening cable ties. Now being an electrical/instrument technician I know the value of treating coaxial cables with care. Really should be something told to newbies in the installation manual, or even to seasoned auto installers.
I don't have a spare, but I am researching the different types and gains. As I am in the southern hemisphere, and we have bugger all satellites to fix too in comparison with our northern cousins. So I need maximum db gain, but not an active antenna of course.
Found out why GPS is so poor in my area. From the "Geoscience Australia Gov Dept":-
Atmospheric (ionospheric) activity north of 20°S will cause issues with maintaining lock on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Space Vehicles (SV) (due to scintillation) and/or introducing large localised gradients (due to plasma bubbles). The former is an issue for most End-Users Services; the latter for single-frequency and Safety-of-Life Services.
Yes, I live at or above 20 degrees south. Pesky plasma bubbles I knew they were a problem.
Don't worry, GeoAus is working to fix it, as they have turned off all other Differential-GPS services in Australia.
They are going to leverage multiple base station working out error correction, and using Australia's phenomenal internet speed to deliver LIVE updates.
If you have an awareness of the Aussie NBN rollout, you will understand the punch line.
And that many people will just have to get used to a roughly 10 metre accuracy. Zero self-driving cars in this country. lol

Interesting to know. Though that doesn't help you in the least
