Move Data between memory cards when travelling - General Topics

I'm searching for a device that allows me to move files from one memory card to another while on travel without a computer (only with my HTC HD2).
So I could made backups from photos and other data.
It seems to be impossible to connect an external card reader or memory card to a pocket PC.
So this may be an interesting solution:

Are there any alternatives?

How to "Active Sync" the SD Card?

As probably for most of you,
the SD card is not just a place to store programs and maps, but also the place where I record photos and short movies...
So, through my active sync and desk Sprite Back-up, I always have a back-up of the 128MB of the device main memory... but what about my SD card?
If the devide gets lost or stolen a lot of memoeries would be lost...
I known I could just copy the content of the SD to my PC, but It's not automatic, if I do it full it takes forever through my device and my PC SD card reader doesn't read my SD card...
So is there a Software around that would allow me to "Active Sync" the content of the SD Card with a folder on my desktop?
Thanks,
Chris
I'd suggest upgrading your PC's SD reader -- either get new drivers/firmware or replace it. USB-based SD readers are really cheap now, and it'll be much faster than any ActiveSync or network based solution.

changing storage card - what about apps on card?

hi all,
seeing as my wizard supports some of the 4GB miniSD cards that are now very cheap, and I've come across synctunes that'll allow me to synch it to itunes, i want to upgrade my card.
however, i've installed a load of apps to my card which i don't want to break.
now, if i copy everything off my old card to the new, will WM5 notice it's changed? do the apps installed to the card care about what the card itself is named as, or is it just called a generic storage card as far as WM5 is concerned?
cheers
ric
just copy over, it should work.

Device partially accessing SD card

Hi,
I have an HTC Charmer with a with a 2g Dane-elec SD Card.
Two days ago the device stopped accessing all the stored data (music, data files for skyscape medical books, e books, apps (all games), pictures, etc). I have tried several soft resets. I have downloaded and run scan disk using pocket mechanic's free trial. The only files I am able to access on the SD Card are WMDRM and Inbox.mst298.... that contains a mail attachments folder.
I have tried accessing the card via activsync and have the same trouble.
Via Start\settings\system tab\memory\storage card tab - the device sees the card and has it as almost full (1473.94MB in use, 471.69MB free)
I really don't understand why the device will see the card but not let me access most of the data on it.
Any help or thoughts would be really appreciated.
Will.

The solution is using chkdsk. See http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=39583

Hot swapping sdhc cards

I'm new to Windows Mobile devices, having previously only used friends' before. I have orderer the Touch Pro, but I think this is more a general question, so I'm posting it here.
Is it safe to swap the SDHC cards while the device is on? I have ordered an 8GB card, but I also have a 4GB card already. I was wondering if I can put movies for example on the 4GB, while having music and everything else on the 8GB. This means I can bring more data with me.
Some programs will be installed on the storage card, so what happens when the card they are installed on is removed?
Also, is it best to install most things on the storage card or internal? I've seen reports of some programs not working well or at all unless installed internally. Is that common? Id rather not fill up the internal storage too fast.
Thank you
sum notes:
ur 4 gb card will prolly load up the appz much faster then the 8gb , i hate how slow my sandisk 8gb card is compared to my 4gb patriot card
definitely try to get the more xpensive higher speed cards
sum progs only work if u install it to the device memory and not the SDMMC
when u take out ur sdcard , and put in another one, u prolly gotta reboot so the pda can refresh/view it
to transfer files i use softick card exporter v3.12

ok, but what happens to programs? are the links still in the programs folder after the sdhc card they were installed on is removed?
if i have tomtom on the 4gb card and the rest on the 8gb card, will everything work ok without having to restart between swaps?

Any program you install on a card, if you remove the card, of course the program icons won't work. Just plug the card back in, no need to soft reset and it will work.
I suggest, use your 4 GB card for ALL your programs including TomTom with maps, so you can place all your videos and music on the bigger 8 GB card. I doubt you can fill the 4 GB with just programs, unless TomTom's maps are bigger than 4 GB. That way, the only time you have to insert the 8 GB card is during music and video playing.
Better yet, try installing ALL your programs on the 8 GB card, even music and video files. I am sure you will keep all your music files. For the video files, if you are like myself who after watching the converted DVD files, deletes them off the card so to place a new DVD movie file to watch. THERE IS NO NEED TO TAKE OFF THE CARD FROM THE DEVICE, all you need is WM5torage which is a FREE program that will let you view the card as an External Disk Drive. In other words, WM5torage turns your device into an instant card reader without removing the card itself from the device with just a push of a button. So deleting or file transfer is WAAAAYYYYY faster than using active sync.

integrating SD card good or bad?

does this feature work better than having the SD card as an external device?
my concern is if you change the card or have to change the card..
surely everything will go to crap if its integrated and you change or upgrade the card.
I won't integrate it, if something goes wrong you have to reformat entire SD card to make it work as normal.
I will just save everything on SD card while internal memory is used for apps/chat storage
The disadvantage is as you have stated. But the advantages are 1) it will become part of your phone storage. You can store app or any other type of date there. 2) It's encrypted and only work while it's in your phone. You won't be able to read it once it's removed but you don't have to worry about loosing sensitive data if someone got your phone. If you need to change the card (replace with a bigger card), just connect to your computer, copy the data to your computer, switch the card, copy date back to new card.

Hi, total n00b here, but is this true? I thought the data stores were completely scattered once an SD card is integrated, so a simple copy of the data (after porting it onto a computer/other storage) to a new SD card would not guarantee reintegration, as you'd have to reintegrate/mount the new SD card.

When you setup initially, you have option for what folders, app you want to store in the SD card. I choose to keep all the app I use often in the phone (faster) and folders like media (video, pictures, music) in SD since they're the reason I need SD card. I currently have 64GB SD card. I plan to upgrade to 128GB when they have it available in UHS-3. At that time, I'll need to migrate from the 64GB to the 128GB. Here is my plan: Under Settings -> Storage & USB, it shows Phone Storage and SD Card. Under SD Card, it show the Apps folder with my few app in it, my music folder, my picture folder, and my video folder. There, I can move the pictures, Video, music folders to the computer. I then move the app back to phone storage (there is option for that). Then I can eject the SD card. Insert the new one and format as internal storage. Copy the folders back from the computer. In addition, I probably don't need to copy my picture files since they're backed up to Google Pictures.
It's not very convenience but the price I pay for encryption. Don't have to do that often anyway.
