File Manager - Android Apps and Games

I am looking for a file manager and I thought root explorer was the best, but I loved how astro looked. After researching I discovered Linda and Estrongs. From the looks of it, Estrongs looks better then Linda and Astro. So my question is, what can root explorer do that Estrongs can't?

Estrongs root ability is limited to CM based and hiAPK ROMs. I don't have root explorer, so can't comment on it.

I see. I think I will get both, since both have some neat features.

I personally prefer SUFBS. Rooted devices only.
Root privelges, ability to wrtite to data and system partition, built in terminal, search function.....

I just got Root Explorer from market and after install, ES File Explorer which came as part of Revolution HD ROM, keeps coming up with 'SD Card unmounted or not present' when I open it. Doesn't seem like you can run the two on the same device.

[Q] Best file manager for Android?

Which is the best file manager on Android platform? Now I use the eFile app, but it has some deficiency (cannot write/delete root files, strange way of sorting the files, etc.). I've tried at least 15 file manager apps, but I haven't find yet the best. I need basic file handling (copy, move, etc), unzip/zip, unrar, modify on root, small size (yeah, X8 with 200 MB phone memory). So which is the best?
Have you tried androzip? It's great for archiving tasks. I'm using it in conjunction with astro.
Root explorer is what you need if you want total control over your entire file system.
There are .apk around here somewhere.
I use ES File Explorer, it knows everything (maybe except unrar) and it's free. You can set it to be a root explorer and you can mount the partitions from within the app

astro file manger for me simple and sweet
Hi, i'm also the ES file explorer its free and great!
Sent from my GT-I5800 using XDA App
I've tried androzip, ES and Astro, but they cannot extract rar files. This is very important for my work, I always receive emails with rar attachment ( rar is the official compression method in my company)
I've no experience with root explorer, but i will try it

Use unrar Or unrar pro.

Androzip can extract rar files, sorry. But cant modify root files

I love ES File Explorer. It is best for me, to manage files from my computer over W-LAN.
Aksi sometimes i am using Root Explorer.
I would recommend Astro File Manager.
Another vote for Root Explorer.

+1, for all your files' needs
for navigating to my sd card and installing apps I use Astro File Manager, and for system management, permissions... creating folders etc.. I use Root Explorer.
I've tried a few but I use ES File Explorer. Just my preference to manage files with. Well I use that and AndroZip of something needs decompressing. Is root explorer just for your root folder for your phone or does it have access to all.folders? Probably a silly question.

Yes. It gives you access to everything. When in root folder just scroll down to/sdcard/ to access your sd card contents.
Definately Astro for me

[Q] does anybody know a good free file manager

that will let me move system apps to sd like you can with eaglesblood ive given up on unstable roms for now im running stock rooted gb2.3.3 with faux kernel its slower that eb i really miss the speed and options but its just to much plus i really love the lg cam 3.0 my benchmark is 2532 lol wow
es file explorer...it has been able to do just about everything i've asked of it...might work for ur purpose too...make sure you enable root privileges and mounting /system in the settings tho before u try moving the system apps
thank you so much can you tell me what you mean ........make sure you enable root privileges and mounting /system in the settings tho before u try moving the system apps im rooted i see no options for that
nevermind i stupid i found it cant figure out how to move system apps but i figured that out thank you
Super Manager. Its in the Market and its free.
Hmm...i tried just cut and pasting the system camera app from /system to /data once but that didn't work...i think the apps might need to be recompiled or modified in some way in order to install them to /data
If you can ask one of the devs, they probably know how to do it

Astro only allows read access to system directories, which means you can only copy files from those directories. You need read/write access (root privileges) in order to actually move files from your system directory to another location. Astro does not have root priviliges.
I'll go for Linda file manager cause its easy and really good in my point of view
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
thank you so much im using astro nothing els is as easy i have not yet found one that will move system app to sd for free maybe one day i can afford titanium backup
There was another file manager that something else had me install, then the stupid file manager wouldn't work. I think the file manager was called IO File Manager or something like that, I would stay away from that one...
lol i will thank you
dual file manager is pretty good
I use file expert for root stuff and ftp etc. but for simple stuff, built in cm file manager.
Try FX File Explorer. Its really cool.
https://market.android.com/details?id=nextapp.fx
Pay $4.00 and get Root Explorer. It's well worth the cost. I know you said free but this is a small price to pay for an excellent app that you can use for life and on any device you have used the same google account.
I'm a fan of File Expert. Free on Market:

[Q] Astro file manager?

I am running Darthstalker X1 rom and I need to remove the file SDM.apk from system/app file, but when I choose it in Astro and hit delete nothing happens. I also have tried to rename files with Astro and it won't do that either. Is this normal for Astro? What file manager app do most of you use?
Thanks,
Glenn
Edit: I was able to download File Manager (free) and gave it super user access and then was able to delete the apk. I have not figured out how to grant Astro Super User access through SuperSU yet though???
I know when I use root explorer I have to mount as RO before I can make changes. I'm not sure if astro allows this. If not use esfile explorer its free and I know that works.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda premium
What you are trying to requires root access. ES file explorer is one app that allows you to do that for free. There are others but you may have to pay for it.
I'm not the type of person to shy away from spending money on ApPs. However the app I use the most is 1 of the only ones that actually is free. ES file Maneger is the only one I've ever used. I Tried the rest but found this 1 to be a perfect solution. Just make sure you enable root access and system read write permission under settings. You can't go wrong

[APP] ES File Explorer CLASSIC (v3.2.5), perfect version before it got bloated!

Update 2023:
By now I've been using CX File Explorer (free. No ads. Friendly and intuitive UI) for 2 years with lots of pleasure! It has great support for local files, editing files, webDAV and even lets you edit online files locally and updates them online automatically. It's very easy and simple to use. High WAF. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cxinventor.file.explorer
Update 2018:
I switched completely to MiXplorer which has all features from the old ES File Explorer Classic and is available for free via XDALabs (which will also keep it up to date).
https://labs.xda-developers.com/store/app/com.mixplorer
------------------------------------------
ES File Explorer has become bloated since version 4. Luckily, version 3 existed for over a year and overall, ES File Explorer has been a rockstable app, with all the bells and whistles you need from a File Explorer. I believe app updates are HIGHLY overrated in some cases. Just like QuickPic v4.5.2, ES File Explorer 3.2.5 has been working perfectly for years. No update could improve it or make it more stable, it could only become more commercial, like happened with both ES File Explorer and a lot of other great apps like QuickPic, making it more heavy to run for your phone, adding malware or moving certain features to a Pro version.
With this signed version of ES File Explorer 3.2.5 (the latest v3) you don't have to worry about the Play Store updating it to the bloated version!
Because it has been signed, you will get a notice the first time you run it, about this version being a custom version. This is normal, just hit the checkbox and ignore it.
Why is ES File Explorer 3 still the best?
- free
- remote browser (access files on your phone via your desktop browser easily)
- S(FTP), SMB etc support
- DLNA
- root supported
- backup apps etc etc
Download ES File Explorer 3.2.5 SIGNED from my CloudUp Classic Apps collection: CloudUp clearly failed to keep the downloads working. Please find it attached to this post.
When you start ES File Explorer the first time, it will ask if you want to update, hit the checkbox (don't remind me again) and select no.
thanks

I'm sorry! I can but I think this could be interpreted as warez or similar and violating the forum rules .
Anyway, I think a quick Google search will return your desired result...
The app has material design since version 4.
Warning:
Do not post or request warez.
This is a violation of the Forum Rules.

Ha I wish he had put that in his 1st post and changed his title! That way I would have found it and no need to create this topic.
But if I only look at the name of his file, it is version 2.3.7, while mine is the latest (3.2.5) before version 4 which introduced a bloated ES. But I haven't actually installed his version. If it is the same version as mine, they are simply identical.
@zilexa
exactly what i was thinking about these apps.
hated the updates.
more ram
more cpu
more functions but useless
Solid explorer should have paid es file explorer commission when they came out with version 4. I know 8 people personally who switched over...maybe some of the ones holding out will use your version so thanks!

As with all file managers, the paid features of X-plore are available for FREE in ES File Explorer Classic, version 3.2.5 before it became bloated.
SFTP/SSH file transfer, remote manager (managing files from a pc, via wifi), music player. It's paid in X-Plore.
So again, no reason to use anything else, sticking with ES File Explorer 3.2.5

Fortunately I don't need any of paid features in X-plore. Keep free without ads, without selling your data, without background jobs, without battery drain.
Hello - I'm running Android 4.4.4 (the latest release from T-Mobile for the Samsung Galaxy S4) and I have ES File Explorer 4.0.5.4 (Market) installed. I'm not sure what the "Market" part means, but I don't think it's the paid version.
I can't edit text files or save newly created text files to my external SD card any more.
On the Google Play site under the "What's New" section for ES File Explorer, it says, "Cannot write on ext-sdcard in KitKat(4.4) -System limitation. Root or upgrade to Android 5.0"
I am rooted but I guess that isn't enough for the version I'm running.
Does anyone know if version 3.2.5 will let me create and edit text files on the ext-sdcard if I'm running 4.4.4?
Thanks.
Edit: I was able to get it working with the 4.0.5.4 version that was already installed. I didn't realize that there was a toggle in ES File Explorer called "Root Explorer". I had allowed the SuperSU rooting app permission to ES File Explorer, but still needed to toggle on the Root Explorer toggle in ES File Explorer. (I got to the toggle by clicking on the 'three bars' in the upper left corner of ES File Explorer.)
After toggling it on, I was able to edit the platform.xml file as mentioned in this post:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2617921
After restarting the phone I was able to edit and save text files on the external SD card.
Been looking for this one.. thanks a lot!
