1) If you have ADB setup on your computer, hook your phone into the computer and connect into it via ADB.
2) Once in, "chmod" the directory or file(s) you wish to change permissions for.
IF you don't have ADB:
1) Download a terminal
2) su - to root
3) Change your directory
4) "chmod" to whatever pemissions you want
it means that folder/file you're chmod'ing was mounted ro. you cant change anything if its mounted as ro. to check just enter "mount" and you can see what are mounted as rw, ro etc
yantz
I would also suggest changing it back when you're done. This helps prevent you from accidently overwriting or deleting something and have to reflash if you're rooted.

ok so I'm trying to root my G2 phone from T-mobile, I have followed the steps in this forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik..._Root_.2F_.22Permaroot.22.29_using_gfree_v0.7
all of the steps, I downgraded my firmware, I got permroot but when I get to step 2: copy files to phone it does not let me push the Superuser files onto my phone, it says permission denied. I have USB debuggin on and i have the screen on stay awake, I have superuser app on my phone but I don't know what i am doing wrong.
adb push su /sdcard/
adb push Superuser.apk /sdcard/ <---these 2 are the ones it doesn't let me push. i have them installed on my platform-tools directory and everything too.
Look here

What is this??
this is for ADB I already have adb
Instead of pushing to /sdcard, try pushing to /mnt/sdcard (/sdcard is just a symlink and I am not sure every system has it by default).
Example:
adb push Superuser.apk /mnt/sdcard/
Also, are you sure your sdcard is working properly? You could also just copy those files manually to your sdcard from your OS as well as you would any other file like music or videos. It would make no difference.
That totally worked!!!
Thanks man, I was stuck on that thing for like a week, ohh man thanks again.
Can't seem to get it to save after i restart the emulator.
Heres my command on cmd:
adb remount
adb push build.prop /system/
adb reboot (note it gets frozen so i just close it and restart in avd manager)
Any help guys?

Why can't you manually edit it? Its fairly easy. Use root explorer or is file manager to mount system and you can edit all you want.

I use ES File Explorer. Check "mount file system as writable" in settings and you're good to go!
Thanks for the resposnes but I've already tried all that, after mounting as R/W and editing the file, it doesn't stay that way. It always reverts back to default
hey!
I try to backup my backup. So I want to copy my nandroid-files from internal-SD to my computer. everything is working fine, but the two big files from data (810MB) and system (1200MB) cant be copied. If I try it with normal USB-MTP windows just ignores my copy-attempt. With adb pull I get an error:
adb pull sdcard/TWRP TWRP
results in copying everything instead of system and data: "failed to copy FROM to DEST: Permission denied"
any ideas?
I'm using JMZ-kernel, dev-unlock, root.
forgot to say: Also no access via Airdroid and ES Explorer/Root Explorer. I tried to copy those files somewhere on the SD-card, also tried to put them in a zip file.
The backup is in a special folder with protection, so you need to set the correct rights to copy the files, I think.
You may use these commands in Adb console:
adb shell
su
chmod -R 777 data/media/0/TWRP/
exit
After this it is possible to copy the files

Hi,
I recently pushed a folder (Download) to the sdcard of my OnePlus One via ADB in recovery. Now, I can't delete any of the files inside that folder via any (root) browser.
How can I fix that?
Thanks.
If you are unlocked, install Root Explorer, or the like, and check the directory permissions. Mine is set to 777, and I can delete it if I wish. Or you can change the permission of the files inside, and delete those, as you wish.
There are likely adp commands, as well. Perhaps someone will show with that know-how.
I tried that, though it unfortunately doesn't work via root browser.
I'll try it via adb later today.
adb remount (to gain rw-access to root partition)
adb shell rm -f <path to file> (to delete the apk)

It is not ROOTED..
I have a couple of saved WiFi passwords in my phone. I forgot them and want to retrieve them now. I know /data folder can not be accessed on non-rooted phone. So I tried it by using adb. I have latest adb, fastboot and Motorola drivers. So let's start. Usb debugging is enabled and my phone is recognised when I use "adb devices" commands. Then I type "adb pull /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf" but it says it does not exist. I have been trying this for many days but I don't want to root my phone for some time. I browsed Internet and all sites say adb pull or adb push can be used successfully without root. Adb pull from /SDcard is always successful but not from /data folder. When I try to open /data/misc or data/misc/WiFi using adb commands it says permission denied. Adb push is also unsuccessful in /data folder. I made a fake wpa_supplicant.conf file in C:\wp folder and then I typed "adb push C:\wp\wpa_supplicant.conf /data/misc/WiFi (I also tried /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf) but it says permission denied. I also can't make these folders readable writable as it says permission denied. Later I also tried using terminal emulator on my phone but no gain. Please help me how can I make proper use of adb without rooting my phone. I don't type commands wrong as I have visited countless sites for many days. And sorry for my English mistakes, if any.
Thanks.

Hey mate, that folder is off limits unless you have root (to protect against malicious apps modifying stuff)
Cheers

Yes /data folder and its subfolders are private by default and can be accessed only after root. But adb push and pull are possible in /data/misc/wifi/ xda-developers and all other major tech sites can not be wrong.
Ok then, i think there is no other method than rooting. It says wpa_supplicant.conf doesn't exist in /data/misc/wifi/
So it may be there in any other folder. Where to look other than /data/misc/wifi folder
