Question re: WIFI Tether - IP ADDRESS? - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hey, I have an HTC Droid Incredible, and a MyFi mobile hotspot (yeah, big red LOVES me!)
My questions is this: I carry the MiFi because I do a demo for my company that opens an HTTP channel using an IP address. So, I use the miFi to login two computers, look at their IP address, and set my software accordingly.
My question is: Does the WIFI Tether create a separate IP address for each computer that is using it? (ie does it function exactly like my MiFi does?) Or is it doing some prestidigitation under the covers that makes it SEEM like it is a real WIFI connection? (I am not using HTTPS, btw. Just HTTP, if this makes a difference....)
If this would work, I'll root my Incredible, and ditch the MiFi...
THANKS!

OK, I'm bumping this... Hate to be a nag -- but no one knows whether the Tether gives an IP address?
The reason I need to know is if it doesn't, I'll be staying with the stock and buying the IP Tether service when it Froyo comes available... but I'd rather root the phone and get the IP tether now...
Can anyone who has it help me out? Just connect 2 devices and do an IPconfig to see what the ip address on your computer is...
Anyone?

OK... NVM. I got the answer on another forum.
The answer, btw, is yes.

Why don't use Wireless Tether and everything can pull internet from the phone without the need of a router?
Bridge the connections in network connections or use ICS

tried both of those, the bridge would connect, but no internet, ics didn't work either, i am pretty tired though probably missing something simple.
WIFI tether is cool and all but i want to use it full time with a dedicated phone and be able to use my wireless printer
I've never been able to get to work if you do post Back with what you did. I think the issue is up addresses, you may have to setup the router gateway address as the pcs ip or even the phones ip... Im not a networking guru though

to be honest i was hoping someone had done it and could tell me how easy it was. while trying to get it to work today i was just clicking around, tomorrow i'll go about if more scientifically and post all the stuff i'm doing wrong.
I can't see any reason off the top of my head why ICS wouldn't work.
So, let me see if I have this straight. Your phone is connected to your PC via USB. Your access point is connected to the PC via ethernet. And you want other devices to connect over wifi and have Internet access. That about right?
Try this... Assign the ethernet port on your PC a static IP address of 192.168.1.1. Connect that to the "Internet" port on your access point, and assign that port an IP address of 192.168.1.2. In the wireless setup on your access point, assign the wireless side the static ip address 192.168.2.1 and tell it to act as a dhcp server, and hand out addresses from 192.168.2.100 to 192.168.2.200. Netmask in all cases will be 255.255.255.0. For dns go ahead and use 208.67.222.222 unless you have another dns service that you prefer.
The router should be configured to use 192.168.1.1 as its default gateway. The wireless devices should be set to use 192.168.2.1 as their default gateway.
This *should* work. Different accesss points can be finicky in various ways, but I really don't see why the setup I've outlined wouldn't work....

MyCloud/Splashtop = Outside Home Network?

Can I use 3G or say my schools wi-fi to access my home computer?
If you're tethering from 3G, just make sure you portforward your router, and just put your external ip in the settings. Google ipchicken to find out your external ip.
Interesting.
But any idea how do I make my IP fixed?
It seems that the external IP changes whenever I make a new tether connection.
BTW, which port should I forward through?m My 2wire router ask only for the tcp/udp port for forwarding, it does not require me to key in any IP address.
Can you advice?
thanks.

To work around the dynamic external IP address you can set up a free account at DynDNS:
http://dyn.com/dns/dyndns-free/
The above link will set up a hostname for your IP address and when it changes, DynDNS will automatically update.
To forward the correct ports, go to the website below and choose the router model you have and then select "Splashtop Remote" from the list after that. (You'll get redirected to an AD, just click skip ad at the top right of the page)
http://portforward.com/
If you already know how to forward the ports, they are 6783 to 6785, both TCP & UDP
Splashtop can sign into a Google account and find itself regardless of networks. I've had no troubles hitting my computer from miles away using that method. Being said I nixed my loud and bought splashtop HD, easily with the money.

This is the best method, and easiest. I used my above solution when it wouldn't work with my Gmail account. But I already had DYNDNS set up for my media server so I only had to forward the ports.
Sent from my I897 using XDA App
Just a note/caveat they are correct that, no matter what, you are going to need to make sure your route is setup to make your computer connectable on those ports. Otherwise its just going to block the traffic thinking its malicious.
I have run into connectivity errors on some networks because they also block traffic on non-common ports, so if you occasionally cant find yourself that could be it.
thank guys!!
very infomative!
I tried everything.
I forwarded ports on my router.
Disabled my firewalls.
Changed to Static IP on my computer, then router, then both.
Made sure the ip was outside DCHP range.
Rebooted after every change.
Tried DynDNS, but I must be stupid because there's no way to enter a host address in splashtop.
Tried using external programs to set a static internal ip.
Set Splashtop to external/internal IP.
I don't know what the hell it is, but I just can't get this nonsense to work. I don't understand what's so easy about this for some people. I have comcast cable modem attached to n300v3 router over WAN, and nothing I try works. Been at this for 3 days. Time I quit.
Are you doing the google account link? That, along with making the ports pass through on my router, was all I did. Seriously, that is is. Comcast/xfinity with a belkin wifi router.

[Q] Problems with RDP through Droid Bionic Verizon WIFI Hotspot and VPN

I am trying to use my Driod Bionic to get to my work dekstop. This is what I am doing. I am firing up the wifi hotspot (paid through Verizon) and connecting my laptop to that. I verify that it has internet access. Next I open my Cisco VPN client and connect to my work network (I get proper IP address, DNS servers and search domain). When I open remote desktop and try to get to my work PC (or any other pc/server) it times out.
We also have a Veriaon MiFi and I do the exact same thing and it works flawlessly. It seems to be related to the phone. I also have a co-worker trying to do the same thing with an iPhone and having the same result.
It appears to be something in the phone blocking traffic. Has anyone else had this problem and got it to work? When I call Verizon they say they don't support it past connecting to the VPN. Another agent toled me I need to get an app to ebable the RDP passthrough.
Thanks a million!

[Q] Change my internal Mac Address

I have the Droid Razr HD 4.1.2, it is rooted but not unlocked. At my school they have jammed my mac address from being able to use my mobile hotspot. They have only jammed my hotspot not anyone else's. So using a different mac address should work, but all of the programs I use are not working. I have tried the Mac address ghost which turns off every time I turn on the hotspot no matter the settings unless the interface is something different than eth0 or wlan0. I have tried the terminal thing, but I keep getting errors saying it doesn't read the "ether" comand when writing ":busybox ifconfig eth0 hw ether 00:11:22:33:44:55". So if anyone has any idea's that would be great.
We need more info what you mean, do you mean that you cant connect to your schools wifi or your phone's hotspot app is being blocked, if it is the hotspot from your phone I am not 100% sure but I believe its a FCC violation and can actually be cause for major fines in the high thousands to low tens of thousands of dollars.
As for the school wifi, best idea is to just not use the school wifi as they are strictly monitored and depending on if you use a alternate app for texting (one that sends texts or calls over the internet) they can monitor anything you send through the server.

How can I set a static IP address of/for my hotspot?

Short version:
When I turn on my phone's hotspot I want to control the IP addresses it uses. It wants itself to be 192.168.43.135 most of the time, and I need to set it to something else more or less permanently. The address it wants to use is causing conflicts. Can you please help me figure out how to do this?
Long version:
My wife and I use our phones as our home's internet source. Till now, we've just been connecting things directly to our own hotspots individually as needed. However, we now have many more devices wanting a stable connection, so I bought several routers (Asus RT-AX92U). I've set two up as bridges, one connects to my hotspot, and the other to my wife's hotspot. These bridges feed into the third router set up as dual-wan, to either aggregate or fail-over. All this seems to work, EXCEPT, both phone's seem to want to dhcp the IP addresses used over their hotspot connection. I suspect this is causing IP conflicts when both phones are setting their own IP addresss on the same subnet, and their gateway addresses also exactly the same. I've tried setting static IP addresses in the bridges, but then even though their wifi connection remains, the access to the internet drops. I think I need to tell the phone what subnet to use to correct the problem.
Someone please help!
Thanks in advance.
-Jason
PS. both our N20u's are bootloader unlocked. So, you know, I can probably control anything that needs to be, if I only knew what and where.
You'd need to root the phone for that - OneUI does not let you finetune the hotspot functionality unfortunately. In fact, Android itself hardcodes the tethering IP and DHCP range. Once rooted, you can use any of the root tether apps, many of which allow setting your own DHCP ranges and IP addresses.
Another, possibly better solution would be if you took a home broadband data line from your provider/carrier, and used a USB 4G dongle with that.

Could you recommend a tethering app with that ability? I am rooted. The tethering apps I've looked at either won't do that, or get bad reviews for not working well.

I can't, unfortunately. To be honest, since Android introduced built-in tethering, the market of tether apps have dropped significantly, especially since rooting hasn't been a mainstream thing for the past ~4 years or so.
Why can't you get a real Internet connection? . Main will be the cable/fiber & failover can be your mobile connection.
