Google Contacts - Captivate General

I've searched and searched and found no answers...
Is there a way to only sync the google group "My Contacts" versus all 1000+ contacts that I may have emailed once upon a time...
Thanks

Uh yes. Go to contacts, then menu, then "display options", then tap your google account, then make sure only check box is on My Contacts.

I dont see the My Contacts box. Just the google account.

Tap the google account then it will let you select which labels (my contacts, sent, trash, spam, etc..)

I don't see that... clicking the google just checks and unchecks the google account...

Try this:
From the home screen, select "contacts". Click the menu button, then select "Display options". Check the box at the top that says "Only Contacts with phones"
If that doesn't work, you could export your Google contacts out in a .csv format, uncheck to not show the Google contacts on your phone, then place the .csv file you exported in Google onto your phone and import it.
Let us know if this works or not. Good luck!

The problem with selecting "only with phones" is that you may want email contacts, but don'thave phone for them. In that even, I would expect to have all of My Contacts, but not the other 1000.

Contacts sync with google doesn't seem to be working

I have sync enabled with my google account. I can get my gmail contacts on my phone. However, I do not see my phone contacts when I go to my gmail account.
What am I doing wrong? My contacts from my phone should show up in my gmail contacts right?

See if this helps. When in Contacts, tap the (hardware key) Menu and tap Display options. See if Phone and/or Sim is checked. That toggles the display of additional contacts saved in the Phone and SIM memory.
Scratch that. I think you want your phone and/or SIM contacts to show up in your Google Account on your PC right? I don't know how to do that... Sorry, I'm not so helpful after all.

in my contacts, on the phone, I see some contacts that have a "g" next to them. These equate to the ones on my gmail account's contact list. Most of them do not display the "g" though.

You're right, I want all of my On-Phone contacts to be sync'd into my Gmail.com contacts list on my pc. and any help is helpful
Your phone\sim contacts will not automatically move to google's contacts online. You have to move them manually. Here is what I did to move my contacts up there:
1. In contacts, under settings, go to Display Options and uncheck the option to show your google contacts. You will turn this back on later. For now, you just need to see the contacts that you want to move to Google.
2. Under settings, go to More and then Import\Export. Then choose to export to SD card. This will create a file on your SD card with your contacts in it. Make note of the location of the file. It will likely be the sd folder and a file called 00001.vcf
3. Exit the contacts app and go to the my files application. Find the file from step #2 and long press it. In the menu that comes up, select Share and then email it to yourself.
4. Now you should be able to get to the file on your computer by downloading it from your email.
(Alternatively if your phone is hooked up to your computer you could just find the file on it and copy it to your computer)
5. Go to google.com/contacts and import the vcf file. They will now be on Google and if you have contact sync on they will get pushed to your phone. I had some duplication between names on my phone and names I had in google so I had to spend some time merging and cleaning them up.
6. In the contacts app on your phone, undo what you did in step #1 by going to display options and checking Google. You will now see all of those contacts with a "g" beside them.
Note - this does mean that your contacts will show multiple times on your phone if your display options have it showing Phone, SIM, and google contacts. I ended up going in and removing all contacts from my phone and SIM card to resolve this. The captivate does try to link similar contacts together it may not bother you. I just decided I wanted all of my contacts in one place and nowhere else.
d'oh you beat me to it. I was doing a test myself to see if it works. It sure does and when I was about to post the instructions, there it was, yours. I couldn't have done a better job.
Nice! This will work.
However, I am quite disappointed that I can't just sync my phone contacts to my google account. It's one of the things I miss coming from WinMo using Microsoft MyPhone.
... you would figure with everything this phone does a simple task such as synching with your gmail account would be a no-brainer in the droid world.
Well.. nothing is perfect.
Thanks for this! I was looking for a way to do it and couldn't figure it out but never got around to asking
Yeah I agree, its kinda bs that they won't just sync. I use "uia back contacts" from the market. Works great with dropbox.

I know this is old topic, but I have a question about the procedure described previously for getting contacts into google...
What about in the future...if I add a new contact on the phone, will it then automatically sync up to google, or do I have to do this whole process again?

[Q] Contacts keep adding everybody I've ever emailed. Any fix?

Hi all. I just migrated from my "old" HTC fuze and got on board the Android train with a Samsung Vibrant. It's fantasic out of the box, but I'm sure after a few more minutes on the forum I'll find something that needs fixing.
One thing that does need fixing is that when it syncs the contacts, it adds anybody I've emailed or responded to, outside of my contact list.
GMail doesn't add these people as contacts, but the droid does. Any fix for this short of going through my contacts every couple days and purging???
I hope this works for you, this is with my Droid Contacts.
Open Contacts -> Settings/More/Options button -> Display Options
There should be a "Choose contacts to display". Select your GMAIL account. Mine is currently set to "My Contacts" and everything else is unchecked. Also check the others listed. Gmail will store random outgoing/incoming emails, as All Contacts, where your contacts are "My Contacts"
Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately, all my contacts are google contacts, and nothing on the phone.
Is there any way to get gmail to not store all the various random emails and people I have contact with? I've dug through the settings and even tried to find something in the labs tab that might stop storage of ALL contacts, but couldn't find anything.

Double check my attacked image, else only other thing i can think of is to remove and readd your google account to your phone.
Ahhh, there's the problem. When I chose Contacts > Display Options, I get a checkbox for my google accounts - there is no drill down for which accounts I can select. I'm on the Samsung Galaxy.
BTW, what screen cap app are you using?
Ok if you can't stop the phone from, getting them then you need to delete them in gmail.
Cause gmail does save everyone you have every replied, or sent email to. It's under other contacts.
just go in there and delete all the ones you don't wont

You dont see a little link icon at the top right corner after you make a contact?
or
Whe you make a new contact, right under name there should be a drop down that says phone, and gives you options for google, phone or sim?
Check and see if your logged into gmail as well, just in case.
I dont see an option for either of them. I check to see if i can link newer ones to google and its not giving ke that option or the option to add to google when creating a new one.
While in the People App. Menu -> View -- make sure Google is checked.
I unchecked SIM and Phone so any contact I created is automatically added to my Google contacts. If you have more than one of the options checked then you should get a choice when you create the contact.

When adding new contact, scroll up. Should say contact type, choose google.
As for syncing, it's automatic.

[Q] I HATE facebook contacts, how to remove them?

I apologize for the profanities in advance, but I'm really pissed off!
I avoid the facebook app like the plague, because once you turn it on it infects the entire phone. However, yesterday I was group-pressured into to checking something out on fb, so I installed it, and set up my account. I clicked in !!!!!!!!DO NOT SYNC ANYTHING!!!!!!!! only to notice that in about 10 minutes, fb took a big ****ing diarrhea right into my contacts lists.
Now I have around 1000 contacts in my phone, 98% of whom I will never call in my entire life. All contact pictures have been changed from the google image to the fb-image, and whats even more disturbing, is that when I make a call to a person with a facebook account, I see his fb-status or last wall-post in the dialer! WHY?! Why would I want to see this?!
I realize that clicking DO NOT SYNC ANYTHING doesn't matter, because HTC Sense ignores this and syncs everything anyway under "accounts". But I realized this too late and walked straight into the trap like a complete idiot. Now its too late, my phone is infected by the facebook diarrhea, and even if I remove the fb syncing in "Accounts", I have all the contacts left.
My question is, is there any way to remove all contacts, besides those in google, without doing a complete nandroid restore? (Im on stock sense.)
Thanks... Again, sorry for the profanities...
Nevermind me.... I solved it.
LOL you totally raged
I have this problem too!
How can I fix this and remove or hide my facebook contacts?
It should be in settings, accounts. There should be sync options there for all of you're accounts linked to the phone.
Sent from my Kindle Fire using Tapatalk 2 Beta-5
Settings/Accounts&Sync/Facebook/
Just uncheck "Sync Contacts", and restart your phone.
Or....
From inside the facebook app
1. Press the menu key (the three dots that no one likes)
2. Select "settings" (the sprocket)
3. All the way at the bottom is an option called "Sync Contacts", select this.
4. Select the option "Remove Facebook Data".
5. Then select "sync" in the upper right-hand corner.
This should remove this facebook info from your contacts list only...
If I helped click the "thanks" button.

Suggestion. Go to contacts. Click CONTACTS tab>settings> "find people you know" uncheck, "suggest contact link" uncheck also
This should solve it.
Also to show only people with phone number select "only with phone numbers" in the above same screen

Thanks for the help but it didn't do anything. As of right now I dont see my contacts from facebook in my address book since i've set the settings on that already but sadly if i go to manually dial a number those same facebook contacts still show up. same with emails. i guess ill just have to log in and out of facebook each time so they stop showing up. its a pain in the butt... i've accidentally text messaged/emailed people i never speak to thanks to this.
Don't use the facebook app and the facebooks friends won't show up. I use the browser to access facebook and its the same thing.

Question I want to see only one set of account contacts than 2 in whatsapp / contacts

Hello,
I have two google accounts in my device (because I want to see 2 Gmail mails but only that) and when I serach for contact I see it from two accounts (it's written in two accounts) also how to set that the whatsapp will see only contacts from one account and from the second one?
Thank you
In Settings/Google choose the relevant account and you can turn on and off sync for any feature (calendar, contacts...). Don't know what will happen with the already synced contacts though, you may have to remove and re-add that second account.

At least in the "Contacts" app, clicking on the 3 lines at the top left seems to separate the contacts between "all accounts" and the various accounts you may have on the device.
I does not seem that there is the same capability in the Phone app -- so, if anything, you'd have to go through the Contacts app particularly to accomplish what you seek (if you go by this method).
Can't say anything on whatsapp as I've never used it...sorry...
Thank you both, yes that what I did, add the first account and sync it all, and than add the second one and not sync all, just the GMAIL, but the thing is that in whats app I see all the contacts and in the contacts app itself, when I search for someone, the result is from both of the accounts, but when I look only at the contacts app itself I see only from one account

mmmm if you are looking more for whatsapp specific condition/circumstance, it would probably serve you better to change the title of your thread to reflect that; vs. the generic "i want to see only one set of account contacts (in general)"....

Oh, okay...it was a bit hard to follow in your Post #4...
Well, at least it was figured out with the contacts app....
If anything, it would seem that it would be on the developers of WhatsApp to implement that protocol/feature. You may want to look into trying to contact them with a "feature request" or whatever similar/comparable they might have to such a thing...
and for the contacts app, there is solution for the search and to see only results from one account?
Thank you
