it plays all the formats it claims to? wow.. you haven't had any issues with it at all?
It works really well, .mkv files play choppy, but any of the .mkv files I converted to mp4 play great. Divx rips play really well, they often look clearer on the small screen than on my monitor!
Been using it for weeks. Plays the most formats I've ever seen of any android player. Best part... Its free!!! Wish I could find a stand alone player for .swf format movies.
Now they want 10 bucks for it!!! Not worth it. But you can still use it. NAGWARE
ROCKPLAYER plays all avi files....
Its all I need )
doesnt work with hdmi out
If its not in the market I won't buy it.
never tried it yet, might in a bit though...

It now is and is out of beta
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
beta version gave me a bad humming buzzing sound when it got quiet in all my .avi files hopefully they fixed it..
that's weird.. i haven't heard any humming sound, although avi audio and video lags. i don't know why.
oh and i tried an mp4 720p video on it, such lag... i'm not sure how i feel about it. it's an otherwise good player.
Yeah, I downloaded the new release today, they changed it to ad/support or pay if you don't want to see ads.
Videos I had encoded into mp4 that played pretty well before, and flawlessly through the phone's video player, now are laggy, especially when you skip through the video.
mkv's still lag, avi/divx still plays well.
I hope they fix all this soon.
I've been using it since it was leaked awhile back, love it.

I don't have any except for when seeking through the files or playing after pause. For a few short seconds audio is choppy or there is none. Also so far I can't get subs to work. Oh and I forgot about HD, well you can fahget about it. 720p vids of bleach, in mpg format, that also seem to have low bitrates since its only 300 plus mbs didn't work. That was with the beta though for the latter.
It only supports .srt UTF-8 subtitles currently.
The application definitely needs some polish. It can't play most HD files yet, and needs more support for other subtitle formats and audio types, but it's the most capable player on Android. One of the only ones that'll play divx files flawlessly.
I love it used the beta for ever but yes it is out of beta and on the market get it while you can
One thing I like about rockplayer that I haven't seen posted anywhere is that it plays flv's. I have ton of those(I had a love affair with youtubedownloader for a while!)
How do I associate it with video files to make it the default video player?
Should I be able to open a file on my LAN via the wireless network in ESTRong explorer and play it?

today ,i have seen a great app in a forum www.hiapk.com app's name is rockplayer. i have received a beta vision. i test it in my nexusone and found it is so powerful than any mediaplayer in android.

2\it can play avi very good
have fun, all this own to the author!
sorry for remove the app. a gay said that I should seek the consent of the Author. I do not know of the Author so I think i should remove the app.
It actually plays avi files at a respectable rate! The quality is pretty bad though. In other words, I can play an MP4 file and it looks much worse than if I play it in a standard media player. At least it plays avi files though!
Wow, MUCH better than wuzhenhua player, works pretty flawlessly. Tested it with a .wmv, .mp4, and .avi on my evo. Also tried to make it run a mkv, there's video and sound but its a bit more choppy. Please keep us posted as this great app is developed, thanks op!

Yeah, but choppy. I tried to play a 720p clip on my Dell Streak and it was barely 3 frames per second.
Plays avi files pretty great on my evo, a few audio syncing issues tho. Also tried a wmv file thats just below the res of the screen, averaged around 10fps.
works good on motorola milestone
Works pretty well on X10 (rmvb) ... XD
I tried a random scene release xvid file, played it fine w/o any sync issues in the first 5 min. Will froyo help with the framerate issues for mkv at all? Not really sure how the "speed boost" really comes in to play here.

mobo player seems the best for functionality and .mkv files. Rock player for .avi. (My experience so far)
i had a lot of problems with mobo when i tried to hdmi mirror the only one that seems to work for me was Vplayer.... ya i know it's 5 dollars but atleast it works really work... and ya 1080 mkv's work fine
With Mobo player I have problems getting sound. (IE the movie playes stutter free, but i get no sound at all.)
With vplayer, rockplayer, and a few other I've tried, I get this horrible stuttering /slow fps in the playback.
I'm running a stock rom, not rooted with all OTA updates.
Honestly, your best bet is to transcode/re-encode your videos to mp4 format.
That's the reason I might switch to the Galaxy Tab when it comes out.
Re-encoding is a pain in the ass.
I wish there was something that works well for all the formats, a VLC or something would be awesomeness.

Galaxy Tab has the same engine under the hood, so it will have the same problems. You might have to wait until Tegra 3 for this to be fully fleshed out.

Samsung frequently add support for MKV and AVI containers into their android phones. But that is _just_ the container support it doesn't magically give the Tegra2 enough grunt to play high bitrate high profile blue ray rips.
Also note that the TF can already parse MKV containers (otherwise it wouldn't be able to play WebM) it just doesn't have the ".mkv" file extension plumbbed into the gallery or the default player. I've found that as long as the video and audio streams are playable then simply renaming the file so that there is ".mp4" on the end (without transcoding nor changing container) is enough to make mkv's play in the default player

I'll bet that's high/main profile h.264 video with AC3 audio. That will never play without at least transcoding the audio track. You either get hardware acceleration (and the hardware can't play the audio track) or pure software decode (and the CPU can't keep up with the video)
I'm looking for a videop player that can play avi, mkv, m4v, and mp4. I'm currently using mVideo Player Pro, but it seem not to like avi, mkv, and m4v. Any help would be appretiated.
QQplayer
QQplayer android market
Try LittlePlayer, there's a free version that plays 5 mins of video to see if it will play what you want. It's the only video player besides stock (that I've come across) that fades out the status bar at the bottom of the screen, a MUCH appreciated feature. More video players need to do this or we need more people to support this player.

I use Vplayer (from the market). Seems to work ok so far, I haven't tested all the file types yet though.
I try and use the default player if possible (as it using hardware decoding) but otherwise I use Moboplayer.
Rock player! it plays every format!

mVideoplayer is running fine. It plays all my 720p High Profile mkv's (re-encoded according to the guide @xda).
Moboplayer and Rockplayer were also playing the files, but together with subtitles (srt's) they didn't get the job done (smoothly without subtitles, but with much lag when subtitles where shown) where mVideoplayer does it right.
I will give Littleplayer a try, because of hiding the status bar. Hopefully it's capable of playing subtitles.
Unfortunately Littleplayer does not support subtitles, but I like the hidden dockbar very much. If I could mix Littleplayer with mVideoplayer I would have the perfect videoplayer.

I don't know, it just plays all my movies from the start. I was experimenting with almost all players, but none of them were good for my demands (working subtitles). mVideoplayer plays every movie which I've encoded. I don't know in what way you open the movies, but I start them from an explorer, not from within the program itself. Maybe that works. I also had these problems with Rockplayer and Moboplayer. All my mkv's are re-encoded from the guide found here @ xda.
All movies should be re-encoded to change the ac3 sound to aac, otherwise you don't have any audio! I think this solves the no-sound issue with the mkv's.
Can you share this link for the guide?
My 720p or 1080p LOST Blu-Ray rips are playing in amazing quality on MOBO player but no sound unfortunately. I installed all the codecs from MOBO but still no luck. The picture quality is impressive though.

Doing a quick search i came up with this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1092965
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102243
I meant this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1060825
When you're on HC 3.1 you don't have to encode the video anymore, only the ac3/DTS sound to aac to have sound on the TF. Then, the guides above will also be good enough and these will take less time to encode. When you're on HC 3.01 you have to encode video too.
I just used the attached presets from my link and I got perfect videoquality and sound, with seperate srt's I also have subtitles.
I had been using RockPlayer on my Android 2.2 GTab and it was my best choice for video playback. When I got my Android 3.1 TF, RockPlayer Lite would work but you couldn't activate it because of the HC OS. They have a new HC 3.1 release now and it works perfect for me and activates perfect. (I did have to buy another license but a great program and worth the $9.99 for me...)
Hey guys
I could swear I had this solved, but most recently its come to my attention
that whatever I may have thought, I actually don't have a reliable way of playing back 720p mkvs on my phone without streaming/transcoding/converting.
Plex has come a long way and works excellently, but I really want to do native playback. Has anyone done a thorough survey of players? If not I will try to do one and write back with my results.
EDIT: I should say that, I actually want to play 720p mkv's off a network share. But let's say the first goal is native 720p mkv playback, and the second goal is to do it over a share.

I don't know what the res of the video was but I know is was a HQ mkv and MX played it perfectly. I've also thrown .VOB's at it. I think I will go home and toss a .ts at it just to see what it will do.
What is the best solution to play MKV's that are larger than 4gb on the G2x? Most of mine are and the 4gb fat32 file size limit on the SD card get's in the way. Can android read an NTFS formatted card? Or can someone recommend a free Windows utility to downsize an MKV to less than 4gb? Thanks.

I played back an avi (xvid) that I converted from a 1080p MKV...file size ended up being around 8 GB. I played the movie just fine and didn't even have the file local...this was playing it across my network from my Media Center.

Same here. I even streamed from my desktop to my surface without a hitch.
We now need MKV to play so we all don't have to convert everything down to AVI or MP4
mkv would be awesome, i've also been playing high quality mp4 with no stutter or lag locally and via the network
I've been converting files to .mov, which plays just fine. Hopefully VLC will support Windows RT in the near future.

Anyone heard rumours yet, when alternative Videoplayers will arrive? I got my surface just today and it's quite nice, but to keep it I need it to play at least .mkv if not just all video files...
Edit:
Ok, now here's a real downer... I tried to play a normal .avi file (saved on the surface, resolution 720x400), but it's way from playing fluent
Any of you also experiencing that? That would really be a no go for me, if it's not fixable, as video playback is really important for me...

I too would love .mkv playback on my surface that would make it more or less perfect .But if i was to use handbrake to convert a 1080p.mkv to a mp4 does anyone know what the best settings to use for surface playback?
I havent had any issues with .avi playback on my surface - All of my movies are DIVX ripped .avi files, and play with no issues whatsoever.
1280x720 will get upsampled slightly if playing in full-screen - the Surface resolution is 1366x768, slightly higher than "720p" - and I would expect that the NVidia chip can handle decoding the slightly larger video well enough too, but I haven't tried.
This is still driving me crazy ! Video playback is super choppy. Need to play it few times till it kinda gets cached and finally plays without a lag.
How are you guys going about it ? I cant even view my GoPro videos without a lag

I use mobile.HD from the Store. It was like $3 or $4. It plays everything i've thrown at it, got tired of waiting for a VLC port.

I've had absolutely no problems playing avi's - files as big as 8 gigs. I also streamed it from my computer and it was flawless.
Now .mkv support, that's a different thing. Hopefully, VLC will appear soon.
There are some options though - PressPlay, Multimedia 8 etc. One of them (can't remember which one) converts mkv to playable format but you'll have to wait a few mins before it converts. On the plus side, it needs to convert just once - next time you open and play the file, it plays fine.
