Title says it all. If you'd like to try out the new Bing search app but are not on Verizon, download the .apk below. Post below if you have any problems or thoughts about the app.
Today we are happy to announce the first official Bing for Mobile Android App available to Verizon customers. You can now download the free Bing App from your Verizon Wireless Android phones’ Marketplace.
The app homepage features the Bing image of the day, complete with clickable hotspots that you can explore and discover related trivia. Did you miss one of the latest images? Don’t worry; you can still swipe through up to 7 days’ worth of Bing images.

I'm not on Verizon so it's not showing up in my market. Can someone post an .apk for the rest of us?
edit: I have a co-worker with an unrooted Verizon Android phone. Is there a way I can get the app without rooting his phone?
edit: .apk attached. Installed on Evo and seems to work just fine. Some nice features here.
Thanks gthing. works great!
Or if you have rooted and have the market access app you can simply change to 310012 and search the market.
Installed on my EVO and it works great.
The traffic it shows on the map is a lot more accurate than google maps.
Works great.. i would like to see a Bing navigation app to compete with google.. that probably won't happen though.
Is your EVO rooted?

Yes. Why, are you having problems getting it to install?
Works fine on stock HTC Desire with Froyo OTA. Thanks for sharing!
works fine on a stock 2.2 evo (NOT rooted or anything "special" done)
Works on my XDAndroid on Sprint Touch Pro2
The App even works on XDAndroid on my Sprint Touch pro2. Awesome !!
Some initial thoughts:
The widget seems to perform faster then Google's at coming up with search suggestions. I also actually like the way the search results look more than Google. You can click anywhere on the result to go to the page, rather than just the title. Seems a bit more mobile friendly.
The Bing app also has a built-in browser. The search widget seems to be the only way to access it, or through the search box at the top of the app. It seems very capable and feels very fast. Might just be placebo effect, but it might be faster at loading pages then the built in browser. It is probably using the same engine as the built in browser, so who knows.
The browser does have a "favorites" feature which I assume is like bookmarks, but I'm unable to figure out how to add something to it. Also, the search box doesn't go away as you scroll down the page - a feature that used to bother me on the default browser but I have come to like. There appears to be no way to open a result in the default browser, if you wanted its features like saving images, adding bookmarks, etc. which is a drawback.
The image search is really cool, definitely better than Google's (as was the desktop version until recently), although it seems to be mysteriously lacking the feature to save or send images or set wallpapers from the images you find. You can pretty much search and view, that's it.
Movies feature is nice. Don't know if I'd use it over Flickster. It does have all the info available on one page, which is nice, but doesn't have movie trailers and you can't search by theater, just by movie.
Maps is okay. Google Maps is just such a mature product with Latitude, layers, labs, etc. that I couldn't see myself switching to Bing maps any time soon. Another poster said it had better traffic data, but it doesn't have Navigation (just directions). Might be a sufficient alternative if for some reason Google Maps is bugging out or something.
The news section just shows headlines for articles which link to the original articles on their respective pages. The interface looks the same to the search results. Nice for some simple browsing maybe.
The last thing is the picture of the day. Today's is of some mountains in China somewhere. The image actually looks a bit crappy, like it is compressed weird or something, but that might just be today. If you dismiss the menu at the bottom of the app, you will get highlight spots where you can click and learn more about the image. A nice feature, but they have it on their home page, too, and I never use it (or Bing, for that matter).
I'll play around with it a little more to see if it sticks. Overall I'd say it's a nice initial offering from Bing, and better than the crap that usually comes out of Microsoft. Missing features like the ability to save images, open links in a full featured browser, and add favorites(?) are the biggest drawbacks.
when i downloaded the file it saved as a .cab
do i change it to .apk?
I tried DLing this straight to my Evo but it won't install. Do I need to DL it to my computer and install it via HTC Sync?
is there any way someone could put up the .apk file up? ii want it, but I'm not on verizon.

Tried this and didn't work on my Xperia X10a
Works great on rooted Evo. Thanks
It works-non rooted Evo
I downloaded it on my non-rooted evo, went through Astro, clicked on it and installed. Works fine, and it's pretty quick too.
works great on stock 2.2 Froyo on Nexus One.
Hey Guys,
I have an issue with some of the browsers available for the android phone.
I would like to access work through my phone via VPN web access. I am sucessfull at this.
When I open my work page, it opens up in a popup window. This is okay too as I allow pop ups under settings.
The issue is, when I click on a case in this pop up window, there is an error thats comes up saying"Cannot open another pop up window, only one pop up window at a time". It is trying to open up my case in another pop up window, which it blocks.
I have used froyo 2.2 on a Nexus one, dell streak, galaxy s tab and motorola droid.
I also used Dolphin HD and Dolphin, with the same results.
I downloaded opera, and there was not even an option for allowing pop ups.
Do you guys have any ideas?
I would like to be able to do my work with out having to lug around a laptop everywhere I go.
Thanks again and Happy Holidays!
Maluman
I would love to find out if this is an Android restriction or there are indeed browsers that support multiple pop ups (or can be tweaked to do so). There are some legit websites that actually rely on pop ups for various purposes (chat rooms for example). Old fashioned and annoying yes, but why punish the end users for it?
Darn, I have the same issue on my HTC EVO. My work website uses pop-ups, but I can't open the link on the pop-up that uses another pop-up! All legitimate pop-ups, not ad-ware. There must be a way to allow trusted sites or something.
Is there a solution to this issue??
Has anyone found an answer/fix to this issue? It is definitely an Android issue b/c I have the new HTC Sensation running Android Gingerbread 2.3, and everyone I know w/ an Android phone from 2 years ago to present has had this same issue....we can not open more than 1 popup window at a time. Like all have posted in this thread, I'm trying to access a number of different applications within my job's website (SWAlife - website for Southwest Airlines employees but specifically for flight attendants to change/trade their trips) and it relies on opening popups within popups but it just doesn't work w/ Android devices.
I've tried the stock browser, Dolphin, Opera mini, Skyfire, rotating the phone horizontally, keeping the setting in Landscape only mode while browsing, and of course, allowing Popups in the browser settings. I also need the browser to allow double-clicks to be just that - a double-click.....not a zoom in and out function.
Please, can someone tell me if there is a fix somewhere to this problem??? I'm interested in buying the new Samsung Galaxy S II but refuse to if I'm not able to access all elements of my job's website. Oh, and someone made a SWAlife app that's accessible with iPhone only (works perfectly & allows popups to open within popups) but I HATE to have to buy an iPhone just b/c of this app. :-(
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide!!
You know the SWAlife app is in the Android market too, but you will not be able to check the overtime call out list, not built in to the app yet, same with from iPhone app.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Yea, I've used the Android SWAlife app for some time but it only employees to make non-rev listings, provides company news and operational updates. No Crew Web Access or FA scheduling. In otherwords, this app is pretty useless :-( The one for iPhone, however, is EXACTLY what we need for Android. It allows pilots and FAs to manipulate their schedules in CWA (Inflight Crew Web Access)....it looks identical to what's in SWAlife on the web and functions just as if you were on a PC. Are you aware of another app in the Market that I might be missing that allows that? Thanks for your help!

Moving to General
I know this is an old problem, but try xScope browser in the market. I needed to be able to open more than one popup window and the website I was trying and failing to access with about 10 other browsers would not work until I tried this one.
I have the same problem. Your tip sounds good. I will give this browser a try. I hope that the search has an end.
This browser works for my sites where I need more than one pop-up. Thanks for the valuable information.
!!!If you have Android 2.1 the app now is in the market!!!
Android 2.2 and higher are also still supported
This is not another Auto Task Killer, no.
Thanks for all the help from everyone! We've moved into a lite and full version now on Android 2.2 and 2.3 phones. This is a new program which allows the user to specify alert levels to phone tasks and give you insight into what your phone is really doing. Make a call, ever wonder what apps may be listening? What's going on when you phone is in standby? In creating this, I will say that I've been surprised a few times at what is really going on. I want any and all feedback as well as we are trying to make this into something special. I am the actual developer of this app.
The full version has:
-Common Names and Actual Application Icons
-No Ads
-Access to all App Settings
-Ability to change alert level from List Tasks
-Removed Internet and Location Permissions
And we have a slew of other features planned for only the full version, but we don't want to spill the beans on those quite yet, but they will enhance the tool greatly!
Both versions now have the new UI as well.
Anyone who had the beta should be notified to upgrade to the lite version now.
Download Task Identifier Lite from your phone:
market://search?q=pname:com.task.identifier
Download Task Identifier Full from your phone:
market://search?q=pname:com.task.identifier.full
I've also attached a QR Code to scan for both versions. Or just search for Task Identifier in the market.
I hope you all find this useful and enjoy!!

Hehe, I like how the only comment for the app (5 stars and "awesome" as comment) is currently by a user named 'x2k'. Hmmm.
I've just installed it and it's been less than a minute and I got an alert from an app that no longer needs to sync...So I disabled it (every little bit of non-sync means longer battery life!).
So far it's looking very promising! I'll definitely report back on my experiences!
Okay, first big thing...
Can you please resolve the cryptic app names to their more friendly name variants?
It's hard to read and make out the com.blah designations.
Thanks!
So far it seems like a cool app. I've been using WatchDog for ages to alert me when an app misbehaves.
But I'm confused about this app. When would you want to be using this? Can you give an example?
I'll keep it installed and see how it goes. Thanks.

Thanks for trying. This is more of an app to alert you as to what your phone is doing, ie what loads at a given point in time on your phone.

Thanks. I'm playing around with it and actively trying to make notifications pop up I opened Facebook and Google Reader started, as did Maps. Weird.
Which brings me to a question: how do we know whether the task started was CAUSED by the current app I'm using, or Android just randomly started it?
For example, it's possible Facebook opened Maps in order to try to get my location, but I don't see the connection between Facebook and Google Reader. Which is why I ask if it's random, or the app I'm using is causing other tasks to run.

You're welcome.
Sounds like a great troubleshooting tool. Nice work!
I'm liking this app more and more. A few more comments and requests.
Comments
* I like the main app window. Large fonts, long-press to get quick-help or short press to go to the item. Nice
* Screen off app start notification, nice!
Requests
1. Possible to get more detail about why or how an app was triggered? Like, was it triggered by a service? another app? etc. And did the triggered app take any actions? Like sending network traffic or queried the GPS and such?
2. The 'Setup Alerts' window is hard to read through, could you maybe add color so all the status 'Green' items have the word 'Green' in green font and so on?
Just added a 5 star rating on Market, keep up the good work!

Thanks for the suggestions. Those are features we truly will consider adding as it will just make the tool even better. Thanks!

Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
First of all, thanks for a great app.
I really like the fact that it reports on tasks/processes started while the screen was off!
I have some suggestions though:
1: When I click the icon in the app list to open the menu, it just shows the "Starting monitor" message and nothing else. I have to open an app to get the message in the pull down bar and click on that to start the application it self.
2: On my Samsung Galaxy S i9000 the layout of the application is just a bit to long for a full screen. We are talking about 1 cm or something.
3: I would very much like a log, so that I can check back, what applications started during screen off, and at what time/date.
4: The way the Android memory management works, I guess it's normal for Android to start and application/process to memory by itself from time to time. Is it possible to show this somehow? For what is interesting here is when an application is launching another application or process, and not when Android memory management is putting an application in memory.
Thanks for your great work, I'm looking forward to further updates to the application!
Just saw this on the front page and thought it looked pretty interesting. Installed a few minutes ago, but so far I like it. Not too intrusive with the pop-up.
As Namuna posted though it would be nice to get more detail.
Also to have the actual app name rather than com.xxx.
Really good work.
Installed.
I like the idea that we can see what tasks are really doing in the background. But as noted by some above, the notifications are a bit cryptic at the moment.
After installing and running the app, I started updating some of my other apps in App Market and my phone crashed. This has not happened before and I seems from my layman eyes that too many things might have been running in the background.
When the phone restarted, it too forever for anything to be displayed and the 3 widgets I had on the homescreen refused to load up. Again it seems to me that this app is popping up too many notifications - I have now stopped the app from starting up and running on start up.
I don't know whether this is unique to me or not though. I am running the app on Samsung Galaxy S (international) on stock Froyo with LauncherPro.
Still, I like this app and will use it more. Keep up the great work and many thanks.
Edit : just checked app settings again, and although I explicit unchecked app running on phone startup, the box is checked again. I unchecked the box and pressed save again. Re-entered app settings and the box is checked again. Am I missing something?
This looks very interesting.. So it's installed and ready for testing
Thank you very much for that app, it's awesome. I agree with the recent posters that the name of the app in addition to the com.blah.blubb would be a great help to identify the task. Also I'd like to see a possibility for a logfile.
Keep up the good work!
EDIT: I can hardly read the small, dark font when setting task levels since I use almost the very darkest display settings to save battery. So being able to chose the font color would be great but has absolutely no priority. Again: great app!Using it all day long now and I am surprised what tasks are being started!
For those who spend a lot of time looking at a computer, and can't be bothered to look at their phone very often, Sand Studio has introduced AirDroid, an app that allows users to control their Android Phone from a computer via WiFi.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=WfNnQxpw7Uw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfXRhSIm-m0
The great thing about AirDroid is that it works - it's easy to start up, and functions flawlessly (in my experience). The interface is also very polished - mimicking a desktop launcher complete with moveable icons, a task bar, and controls that allow you to do just about anything.
One of the most impressive features is the ability to access SMS messages, manage them, and send messages right from a web browser. Users can also manage contacts, uninstall/backup apps (AirDroid will download your apps as apk files), browse files, access the Android Market, and manage music and ringtones, in addition to the ability to look at phone information from CPU status to battery level and beyond.
Best of all, AirDroid is completely free from the Android Market. With all the powerful features it offers, this app is certainly worth checking out.

This is without a doubt 'the best' app for controlling your phone from your browser. I've installed and played with many and this one tops the lot in my opinion.
It's clean, easy to use, great interface (both on the phone and PC).
Side note: This thread would probably be much better off in General Android Apps and Themes forum - http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=530. The app isn't specific an LG Optimus.

I'm a little hesitant to try out apps like this as well but they have nothing but good feedback on the market and a good following on both Facebook and Google+, as well as having their own website, so I was happy to give it ago.
@smackdownn Yeah I am with you on the whatsapp, this app is brilliant.
@Nucleotide & SpyderTracks Seriously? Whats the issue with privacy? Scared these devs are going to email or sms your gf while you are out? Either that or learn to hide your porn somewhere that is not your phone. I have said this before on so many occasions, when you were using a nokia/winmo/other NON android phone, they sneakily NEVER asked for permissions, but you installed apps that could pretty much do anything on your phone anyway
This app is by far the best solution I have tried in this regard, it just works and damn well too
@Cornelha
Lol.... I get what you're saying, but I think it's a little naive... the information we hold on smartphones these days compared to "our old nokias" means security is vital. After years of dodgy torrents, malware and hacked accounts, I've learnt to take it a bit more seriously, albeit probably to the extreme

I agree. I don't have anything I would call "sensitive data" on my phone but I do have a lot of contact information such as names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and other information which although not really sensitive, I still don't want other people to have - especially if I don't know about it. Not only that but apps can track your location, the buttons you press on your phone, numbers dialed, text messages sent, websites you visited, and the list goes on.
With that in mind I take caution when installing any app. I check for things like the amount of reviews on the market, the quality of the reviews (good vs. bad), does the developer have a website, a Facebook page with a good following, and so on.

I used to be able to click a number and android would as me to choose my VIOP or RC "just once" Now every things is set to "always"There used to be an option to only use it once. It's weird for sure. Seems like only sharing from certain apps like the gallery and Internet browsers give this option. But this app helped: app picker classic. It's in the play store. It's not ideal but it's working for me. If you share and choose this app the first time it will add all your other options for each consecutive time.

I am working with the developer "better open with". He said there is a bug.

I swear I love Samsung but they do some of the dumbest sh!t. LG also removed that feature from some of their devices. What the heck are these manufacturers thinking? What on God's green earth makes them think that you want to handle one type of file the same way everytime? Sometimes I want to open a link with one browser and open another link with another browser because maybe that specific browser works better with that particular websites. I love the just once. Constant clearing defaults is fuking worst than selecting between just one and always.

I have this but it is only for things programmed into the app. I cannot scan an NFC thing and it always come up do I want to use "Tag" or "NFC Reader" or "xyz". Because the app does not know about this "type". It's good to protect and provide choice for websites and images and things but it is not perfect. Why would samsung/google mess this up? Not only is it stupidly inconvenient but it is less secure because now something like a website or any other thing just goes on it's merry way automatically opening and executing with an app all the time, instead of the usual thing where I have the choice to press always, just this once or oh yeah just press the back button to cancel the attempt from the start.
I am not happy with the loss of this functionality.

One of the workarounds I found for sharing or opening links with different apps was to select "Copy to Clipboard" option when you select the default app for the first time after clearing your old defaults and then go to your target app and paste from clipboard. It's definitely not as straightforward as selecting "Always" vs "One time only" but still better than clearing out defaults after every use for me.
This is actually incredibly annoying. Sometimes I open Youtube videos in Youtube, sometimes I open them in my VLC Remote Control, sometimes I open them in Flyperlink....how this functionality went away is beyond me....frigging Samsung.
Better Open With will have to do for now, thanks for the link.
