First of all, you don't need root to use transparent widgets or change your lockscreen. There's a thread full of transparent widgets here on xda. You do need root to use transparent versions of system apps. You can change your lockscreen by purchasing the app Widgetlocker or flashing a custom rom that comes with a different lockscreen. The lockscreens you generally see in screenshots are from WidgetLocker, though. It's a great app & fully customizable... more than worth the $3.
Before changing any system settings, you'll need to do a nandroid backup via your recovery. This way, if you change anything and it screws up, you can restore from a working backup. You can also use Titanium Backup to backup your apps & data.
But really, the first thing you need to do is read. Read all of the stickies in your device-specific forums. Read everything you can until you understand, if you don't you could end up doing damage to your phone.
Oh, and you may need to install busybox to get some root apps to work. You can acquire it through the busybox installer in the market, or Titanium Backup. In TB, hit menu, choose "problems?" then choose to install busybox.

It is not safe to move everything to your sd card. Widgets, launchers, and a lot of system apps are not okay to move. Don't move any kind of alarm either. Third party apps that aren't what I already mentioned should be fine to move. System apps that need to run constantly are not okay. If you don't know what it is, don't move it. Stuff like the calculator would be fine. The phone app wouldn't. Plus, and I could be wrong, but moving system apps does not give more room for third party apps, but gives more space to the system partition. I could be way off, so you may want to look into that.

Hmmmph, well it worked fine for me before I was rooted. I installed modded apks all the time, just not of system apps. It may have helped to uninstall first then install the new app. Since what makes the widget transparent is stored in a res/drawable folder in the apk, it could've been the apk that you downloaded. Or I guess it could've been the method of installation. As I said, worked fine for me.

Uhm.. Okay.. i'll just try to move the apps which are downloaded that can't be moved in an unrooted phone but the pre installed apps will not be touched.. is that okay??

You should be fine moving third party apps as long as they don't have widgets that you use. If you're using a third party launcher like ADW or LauncherPro, don't move that. Other than that you should be okay.
If you're having a hard time downloading apps from the market, try going into settings, applications, manage applications, then choose the "all" tab. Find the market app and force stop it. Then clear cache & clear data, then relaunch the app. That should help. If not, you can try using AppBrain along with Fast Web Installer to download apps from the market. I've found this method to actually be faster for me. If you can't get to the market to download the apps, let me know & I'll post the apks for you. Once you've downloaded the Fast Web Installer, you need to open it & follow the instructions to allow it to install apps for you.
Flashing a custom rom might fix your problems as well.
Oh, and no worries, I'm always happy to help out. This community has done great things for me - I try to give back when I can

Uhmm.. okay.. but i guess ill try the Fast web installer and Appbrain.. but i already unrooted my phone.. hehhe.. since its still new.. hahah.. but i will root it maybe a couple of months later since i want to enjoy first without using root priviliges..
but thank you.. really.. since this can help me..
i say that i will root it after several months first because i want to search more about rooting.. ehhehe..
i really want to say THANK YOU to you..
I have already rooted after reading everything I can find.
I do have one question though. What is S on or S off?
I would like to start by saying this is entirely my fault but I would be very grateful for any help.
So, I downloaded a custom launcher called touchwiz 4.5 onto my phone and everything was working perfectly until I decided to open up root explorer and try to change the name so it would run in the background instead of TW3. So I did it but when I pressed home it asked me which launcher to use and I selected the wrong one and the set as default was checked. Now, I am stuck without a launcher so I can not open anything at all to fix the problem.
I will be extremely happy if I do not need to buy a new phone and thank anyone in advance.

Left Soft Key -> Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> Find & select the TW4.5 launcher or whatever in the list -> scroll down to Launch by default -> Clear defaults.
Thanks, but there is one thing I forgot to mention earlier. I cannot access the main screen because I receive force close messages while the phone is on, and there is no delay between them so I cannot even use it. I was thinking maybe there is a way through the computer.

You have a root so you gave cwm recovery, correct?

Look up Odin in the Bible. You can use it to restore the phone. If you can make a backup of your micro SD onto a computer. Other than that if you deleted your launcher your phones gonna keep FCing on you. Cool thing to try to delete though.
ADB Push the apk(s) back over?
Your best bet would be to just go into CWM, create a NAND backup, Odin a new ROM, and advanced restore your NAND's data. That should clear up everything.
Using ADB is not that easy, especially when you're new to all this stuff.
Everyone should be forced to learn.basic adb commands before being able to root their phones for problems just like this.

Hello everyone
I have a very simple question, but it is bugging me so much right now!!
I use Facebook on my phone all the time, and I love how it integrates into my phone, however, I hate the newest app that came with the new firmware.
Now, not being a total noob I found the version I liked, installed it, and things were grand, but then, the next time I went to use it, the app had updated itself =/ so I downgraded it again, thinking I had done something wrong, and guess what, uit updated itself again.
My question is, how can I stop it auto updating itself??
I have gone to the market and set it not to update, and it still does it.
Any help on this would be great

You pushed the app to /system/app/ right? well delete it from /system/ and install it in /data/. Apps on the /system/ partition are classed as "safe" by android market and the market will auto update them, apps on data partition are not and you have to confirm update yourself

The thing is, the app doesn't even show up in the "MY APPS" section of the market, so I don't get why it manages to update, unless when it goes online it just updates thru the app without asking.

I think I done it!!
I went into /system/app and found facebook.apk whic was V1.7.1
I then took the .apk file for the version I like best (1.2.4), renamed it to facebook.apk, deleted the first one (1.7.1) and popped the other one in its place.
I still get the thing on the news feed of facebook saying there is an update, but it hasnt just done it automaticly, and i use titanium backup to totally detatch it from the market!!
Thanx for ur help mate, fingers crossed this works from now on

I used root explorer to search for swype. Then I deleted everything.
Then go here and register, https://beta.swype.com/
Then just follow their instructions (takes about 5 mins.)

I'm running this swype beta from swype.com as well on Zeus 5.2 rooted. I find the beta swype much nicer and better performing than the one that comes installed by samsung. Even if I was going back to stock, I would probably use TiBackup to remove the default swype and replace it with swype beta from the website.
Working again
I went back through the thread suggested, again. Tried previously but just couldn't get Swype deleted. (still didn't get the libswype... to delete) Then installed the beta & VOILA! works again.
Thank you all for the help!
to find that file, you need a root tool like, root explorer.
When you run it, go to /systems/lib/ find libswypecore. then delete it. you may need to toggle the r/o r/w button at the top.
if you like swype, here is something you may like:

So, I wanted to do a factory reset on My old Sensation so I could give it to my dad. I did it, but I forgot that I removed default home application from it. And since I removed my account from it, there is no GoLauncher Ex on it theat I used either, so I can't see any screen, menus, nothing. All I can do is I am able to use notification bar and view settings. I have no backup anywhere. Why did I ever even root you ask if I am not computer or phoney savy, well, because I wanted to remove some apps, so here I am now. Any ideas?

Could I simply install GoLauncher on it somehow?
IF you have a another android phone or a computer you could enable bluetooth and send the apk file wich is go launcher. You can search Google "go launcher apk download".

You can install it by using sdk using a computer but my guess is that you dont know how to do that so just download the official ruu if you are bootloader lock or there are many stock rooted roms if u have s-off and have a custom recovery...
I mean no disrespect by assuming u cant flash an apk through sdk on a pc...
Forgot to mention there is a third and easier way which is to find a launcher zip that can be flashed on recovery like touchwiz from the galaxy s3 then you can flash then you can install any other app out of the play store and remove or keep the flashed launcher just in case you reset the phone again...

Best thing to do is. Download golauncher apk file to your computer then either you send it via Bluetooth,or you can create or have account in any file sharing site eg. Box or dropbox. Uploaded to that then make file as for sharing to friends, you will get specific wab address to access that file then download from ur phone. You will see download in dropdown notification menu install file from there.

Thanks guys, you are right, I don't know how to flash, no offence taken, I just wanted to share an easy solution, perhaps someone messes up like I did some day, in settings I went to TTS and pretended to want to download English files. That lauched Market for me and I just downloaded Go Launcher from there. I was just veeeeery lucky.
