How to assign default application for file types? - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

I'm having an issue with avi video files not having a default player anymore. I know that the actual default player cannot play them, and I do have other programs for it. Unfortunately though, I cannot seem to figure out how to change the default program used for a specific file type.
Searching the internet keeps coming up with going into Manage Applications then clearing defaults of something that currently is the default, but that option is always ALWAYS greyed out (I went one by one for everything in there). Regardless, I did find a program on the Market called "ClearDefault" that basically clears all defaults for programs, but it did not help.
Also, the problem is not that something else already is the default. The problem is that NOTHING is the default for it right now (something happened to change this but I can't figure out what).
There must be a file somewhere inside the phone that decides this. If it isn't accessible inside the phone, then I'm looking for how to do it manually via my PC, terminal, or adb.
This is something I want to learn for future reference as well as the current problem at hand.
Hopefully we can come together and figure this out.
EDIT:
I forgot to mention that attempting to open the file via Astro or the browser's downloader just comes up with an error. I can obviously open the file/s via the player's file selection browser, but I cannot figure out how to make it open said player upon download or clicking.

Long press in astro
select open as
select video
select default ceckbox
select program desired
finished

Thanks a lot for the response. I'm glad someone finally came to the rescue. Unfortunately, I tried that already (and forgot to mention it). It just opens the default HTC player which cannot play avi files. Although, I did try it again just to be safe.

Damn. I'd try installing again. Or you could dive off the deep and and convert all of them to h264 lol

Oh come on, no one on xda-developers (hackers united) can figure this out? I'm having the exact same problem! Except I have the issue with both music and videos.
Tapping an .mp3 in astro opens up the default Music player, and if I go into astro settings and remove 'audio' from the MIME type for .mp3s and long-press the file > open as > audio it still plays with the default Music app. Going into home > settings > applications > manage applications > music does no good because there are no defaults set, the button is grayed out!
And I have the problem with videos too, except in settings > applications > manage applications, there is no option for 'Dell Video Player' (I have a Dell Streak) or even 'Video Player', it's not even in the list!
If any android genius out there can figure this out I'd really appreciate it.

Hi, having some problems with my Touch Pro

Please bear with me, as this is my first windows mobile phone and I'm not all too familiar with it.
First problem is, tapping "Launch Browser" on the Internet tab does not work. After thinking about it for a while, I realized that the Opera browser was not installed on my device! Now, as far as I know, it should come already in all devices. So, I downloaded the Opera 9.5 browser off their website. How can I set it up so when I tap "Launch Browser" on the Internet tab, Opera 9.5 will automatically run? Currently tapping it still does nothing.
Second is, I've been hearing about this "Windows" folder in the HTC Touch Pro. I can't seem to locate this. When I browse for it with my computer, the name of the TP's "hard drive" is "\", and then I see the following folders:
Application Data, ConnMgr, Content, Documents and Settings, Music, My Documents, Program Files, cemail (hidden file), pim
Is this root folder the "Windows" folder?
Third thing is, in the "Programs" tab in TF3D, there's this icon there that when I press (looks like the default icon for a folder in Vista), it gives me an error. It says "The file 'wt5jetpr' cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. If the problem persists, try reinstalling or restoring this file."
There we go, that's all. Thank you, if you've read this far.
I can't help with the Opera thing but as for your Windows folder, it's a system file and hidden. You will have to unhide it in your Vista/XP operating system before you can see it using your PC>
You see, I already enabled the viewing of hidden folders. There aren't any other items other than the ones I listed.
EDIT: I tried creating a folder called "Windows" and Vista tells me I can't, because a folder of the same name already exists.
That's weird.. hidden folders are already enabled and I still can't see it.
Hiya, i'm a bit of a noob myselft with regards to wm6.1 so for the opera issue i dont think i could be much help with that same with the file that wont delete so i hope someone else will answer that, to see ur windows folder though when the phone is connected to the pc open up explorer on ur pc and click on tools/folder options then click on view and make sure either the "hide protected operating system files" box is unchecked &/or the "show hidden system files box is checked and this should let you see the windows folder.
Hope this helps.
EDIT: looks like someone already answered in the time it took me to type that, my own fault for multitasking ...

Same thing as you, when I browse to the device from Windows Explorer.
However, if I go to Tools - Folder Options - View tab and I select "Show hidden files and folders", the Windows directory is displayed.

By the name, it looks like it is JetCet Print 5.
Strange you have these errors. Do you use a custom ROM?
PS: been too slow to answer too. but at least the answers match ;-)
I'm not using a custom rom =\. The rom came with my device.
It's:
1.90.405.1.WWE
It's a HTC Touch Pro T7272
Then I advise you to do a Hard Reset. Opera and JetCet print should be there, and should not give you any certificate errors.
I advise you to read a lot these forums, gather as much info as you can, and experimenting with your device. You have a powerhouse in your hands, you know? you have unlimited possibilities. Any questions should you have must be asked.
Alright, I'll give that a try tomorrow after the day's gone so I have lots of time to figure things out.
Sorry for the double post, but I figure this message won't get read if I simply edit my last post.
Anyways, I hard resetted the device and I got Opera and that printing program working! Thanks creiz.
Just one last thing I'm trying to figure out.. is there any way I can get a custom alarm ring tone without downloading a program? (I'm trying to avoid having to do that if possible)

[Q] [Android] Changing files associations

Is there any way to directly change file associations in Android? I read you should be able to it this way:
Going to the app manager, selecting an app and then there's a Launch by default setting.
But it says there No defaults set for every app. For example Adobe Reader opens when I click on a PDF file. Still it says No defaults set.
Is that even the proper setting or am I looking in the wrong place?
Also if it is, is there any way to easily switch between file associations?
I assume this is because you have only one application able to open PDF on your device.
On my device I have 2 applications able to do it and I have the pop-up window that appears when I want to open a PDF.
I confirm that's the right place.
What application would you like to open your pdf with?
The problem came up when I installed Documents to Go whose PDF reader was slooow. So I wanted to use the default PDF reader that comes with Revolution HD. For some reason I couldn't find it anymore, so I installed Adobe Reader (but that's offtopic here... ).
So if I got it right:
If you install more than one app capable of opening a certain filetype you get asked when you open that filetype. You can also set a default app and then you don't get asked. This default setting can be removed through the app manager.
That so?
Correct

How to hide media from the gallery?

I used to be able to do it on 2.2, 2.1, etc. Just create a directory with a dot in front of it ".temps", and use astro to find the files, but maybe something is different with honeycomb? I'm doing the same thing, but gallery still sees all of my files. Thanks.
*Can't figure out how to delete this post, but go ahead and delete it, my mistake.*
maybe just use a specific micro-sd card for your porn.

Lmao.
Clear cache and reboot -
Ya yesterday I googled this and found some said make a file called .nomedia in the folder and others said to put a . in the folder name so I did both and it didn't work, but then I reboot the TF and then it worked so not sure which one actually did it or if both did.
.nomedia does work. The thing is the media scan only run when you rebooted. I think DevTools or SpareParts (don't have my TF with me right now) has an option to force a media scan so youdon't need to reboot.
I have a similar question, but it might be different case though.
Anyway, I have a lot music folder containing mp3 songs and in each folder there is a file called folder.jpg. I created those folder.jpg files manually to assign each music folder a cover picture. They are all shown up properly in the Music player.
(I had this for long time already for my Windows phone, Android phone, Windows PCs).
The problem I have is that, those folder.jpg files are also shown in the Gallery (for Pictures) and I do not know how to exclude/hide those folder.jpg files from the Gallery.
Any clue will be appreciated.
Spawned a good idea. Given .nomedia is supported, the android devs should expand the idea to help you solve your problem. Something like .nophotos in any music folder you don't want photos to be noticed in, and .nomusic, .novideos, .nodocuments, etc..?
When you say reboot, do you mean power off/on? I use Quickpic to browse photos since it doesn't include album art, but I like the default pic viewer and would like it exclude album art as well. I added the *.nomedia to my /music directory and it still shows album art.
Try changing the name of file from folder.jpg to albumart.jpg. It worked on Android 2.x

Disabling or unlinking MyLibrary -- how to do it?

So, I tried my first ePub book from my library today. Figured out downloading it on the tablet, but made the mistake of opening it with MyLibrary. I hadn't used this stock app at all until now, as all my reading has been things I've purchased or downloaded for free in Google Books.
It is, in a word, unusable.
It flickers constantly and doesn't respond to touches on the screen 50% of the time. It's not like I have a staggering number of documents on my Transformer -- it's only detecting a grand total of 45 things, almost all of which I would never want to open with it. Unfortunately, there's no way to limit it to a specific folder branch, but I digress.
My problem is that having opened my ePub file with MyLibrary, even though I intentionally didn't choose a default application on opening it from File Manager, it now defaults to opening in MyLibrary, even after a reboot. I've confirmed there are no defaults set for either MyLibrary or File Manager, and indeed even downloaded an app that listed all defaults on my system, and removed the only two that it found.
Still, the ePub will now only open with MyLibrary.
How--without rooting or wiping--can I get this hateful application either disabled or unlinked so File Manager will allow me to open the book in another app? I have other ePub-capable apps (eg. Nook) installed, so it must be possible to get my book into another app, but I can't for the life of me figure out how.
Easy, if you have Nook installed then go into file Manager, tap on the Nook folder then you will see MyDocuments folder. Move all your epubs into that folder and open the Nook App. Top Left select "My files" then hit the refresh icon top right. All your epubs should populate the screen.
Oh yeah, My Library is a piece of junk . . . lol
Just go to Settings > Applications > Manage applications > All. Scroll down to the Mylibrary app, select it and you should see 'Launch by default' there. Select 'Clear defaults'.

[Q] Custom Key Sounds

I post this in my SGS4G Forum, but haven't gotten any hits, trying to broaden my chances of getting some help.
Ok, before i posted this i searched high and low and really couldn't find a strait answer. Here is what i am trying to do... I have a bunch of cool sounds... I would like to set these sounds as key tones... you know, like when i dial a number on my key pad.
So i got all the files in order, converted them to .ogg, and placed them in /system/media/audio/ui and renamed them key1.ogg key2.ogg etc.... Well nothing happens, i cant even play the file, it says its "unrecognized" by the stock media player and Rockplayer. anyone have any ideas?
I read somewhere that the "program" that plays these files will only recognize certain codecs or something, That is a little outside my AO (area of operation)....any help would be greatly appreciated!
panda
I found this
http://www.droidnova.com/creating-sound-effects-in-android-part-1,570.html
However, i am not a Dev so this might as well be Japanese, any hints?
That link is relevant for writting an app that plays sounds.
The app that does this, the dialer already exists though.
This rather sounds like a codec problem.
If you can't open and play those files with the native android player on your phone, the dialer won't be able either.
Recheck the encoding on those sound files and try again.
they will play from the sdcard, but when i move them to the UI folder on the root, they wont... still an encoding issue?
Could be a permission issue.
There is no permission issue on the sdcard, as all files are accessible to everyone, but this doesnt apply to files in the root folder.
So try changing the permissions.
Changed the hell out of the permissions, which made the native player play the file.. YAY!! However......when i changed the file name to Key1.ogg from key1a.ogg, i press the corresponding number on the dialer...i get nada. so sound at all, i will play with permissions a little more, maybe change the format to a lower quality file and see if that helps... Thanks for the insite!
Well the filename has to be the same as the original one, CASE SENSITIVE mostlikely.
To make sure you have absolutely the same kind of file you could extract the original sound file and use a common player (i.e. VLC?) to check the bitrate, encoding, kHz etc.
I DID IT!!! WOO HOO.. what a pain in the ass! LOL I made the files smaller... less than 16hz and 92kbps.. then sent them all to drop box... copied them to the ui folder... THEN...I renamed the originals...then renamed the new ones.. giving them god permission. It worked!! Wish i was more of a Dev.. i'd make an app to simplify it...took about an hour once i got the hang of it....
