LOL........no not nother one, but I had a thought last night.
Whilst using the camera flashlight for something it was just a bit 'in your face' if you know what I mean.
It got me wondering is there any possiblity of using a slider to select the brightness of the camera flash so you could dim it a little (reading a book...etc)?
Or would this have a catastrophic affect on the LED?
there is an app called flashlight that uses the screen not the LED which you could use
using the screen for such a purpose would drain the battery preeetty quick i'm guessing =)
So would the LED so either way its draining the battery
The screen one is great, you can change colors and everything too

Hi,
I've been searching the world, the interwebs and on this forum... but nothing seems to come close to what i actually (need) want for my HTC Hero, Since i find myself blind at night it can be challenging to avoid obstacles at night and i have to either turn on the light or use my phone with a "hey look! my phone is a flashlight / tourch" app that uses my screen by turning it bright white (witch hurts my eyes, wakes my GF and drains my battery).
One night i realized that my indicator led (at that time green) was enough light to successfully navigate the dark bedroom at night, without waking my partner... but allas it only showed up when it was done charging and still plugged into the adapter / computer, unfortunately many a usb cable do not reach beyond 1 meter. and i was again forced to use the "hey look! my phone is a flashlight / tourch" app witch got me into a lot of trouble again...
of course i tried the look my phone is a flashlight white screen apps but they tend drain the battery real quick and anoy my partner.
in short... i'm looking for an flashlight app that uses my indicator led instead of my screen or the non-existent camera flash LED.
can anyone here point me in the right direction or make an app like this one
I would be very grateful
Cheers
R.
I am unsure if you can control a hardware LED. I will look into it.
thx that would be awesome, thanks in advance
So yeah, screen flashlight apps let you control the brightness, and the one I used long ago, also lets you control the size of the area, color, etc....
that might be so but the screen flashlight is imho anoying and i would prefer to use the green LED

I think you can only control it when you are rooted and it is very device dependent how this is done. But yes it can be done... Basically it comes down to finding the right files in the /sys directory that are controlling the led(-s) and output something to it (usually a 1 or 255) to switch it on. (Maybe this is some info that other developers can use).
coming from htc legend and xperia mini, the led notification lights was an important feature, now i really miss it in the note, and using noled app is not the same as having actual led lights.
so i was thinking if there is a possibility to use the menu and back buttons lights as notification light ? i found that they are separate from the screen light .. so can this be done by an app or a custom rom or it can't be done ?
This idea has already been implemented for many Samsung devices. Just find a custom kernel with "BLN" Support (BackLightNotification) and then download the app (info HERE) and away you go.
Hope that helps mate

check bLED
after i posted this i found out about bLED and bln kernel (i didn't know what bln means) thanks for your help
There is also noLED. Not one i use but you might aswell know all the options
I've read that they all hurt battery life
i tried noLED but i didn't like it
i know that bln might drain the battery faster but it's important for me, and maybe with further development some of the current problems might be fixed
NoLed is good, doesn't require root and only uses about 3% battery when enabled (and nothing if you switch it off). You can also customize the settings for additional power saving and I managed to get it down to 1% by setting the notification to flash on and off.
My only issue with NoLed is that from time to time it gives me the sleep of death. Disable it And my issues go away - haven't had time to test whether or not SoD is down to the power saving settings.
I know its possible with apps but was wondering if its possible with the stock software?? If not, what ap are you guys using for this function? TIA
I use Lightflow.
I use lightFlow as well and its not possible in the stock software AFAIK.

Do we have all these color options in lightflow or only a few? If so which ones do yall use?

The LED in the phone supports RGB so you should be able to get a moderately wide color spread. Each different notification in my phone has a different color and blink rate specified by lightflow so I cant really go into detail there. The only thing I have yet to figure out with it is how to dim the LED as its really bright, and while I want a charging indicator, at night its hard to sleep with the bright orange on my phone.

Now it seems my notification LED is going off for no reason; there are no notifications currently showing besides juice defender and smart actions neither of which have an LED function tied to them; does this ever happen to you guys?

Ya, I've had phantom notification issues before. Before I got the settings right for my 3rd party SMS app (Handcent) I had a few issues where the notifications weren't clearing. The other thing you might check is that gmail will try and notify even if your using something else to mark the message as read, (ie: using gmail on a different computer and reading the message will make it disappear from the status bar on your phone cause to the mailing client the message has been read, but the lightflow notification requires you to open the app that's triggering the notification to clear the lightflow notification.) Other than that I'd try changing the color of different apps and seeing if the LED changes with it and try to pin down the app that is causing the random light.
Let me know if that helps,

Hi:
The best feature of lightflow is the ability to turn all the notification lights off at night, from any hour yo choose to any hour in the morning.

Those of you using light flow, what settings are you using? And are you rooted? What build are you on. I had never even noticed the pho had a notification light until I had had it for a while and I saw the low battery light one day, until then I had never noticed it lit.. I'm currently rooted only, have not unlocked the boot loader. On build 125-asa-10.
I first thought light flow was not working but have come to notice it is, its just extremely dim to the point you almost can't see it even in a dark room. Anyone else have this issue or know what I'm doing wrong?

I never noticed it being excessively dim per se, but when I first installed the ap at the office under flourescent lighting the lights seemed weak and not to match the colors I had selected. Once I decided to choose only a few notifications and with stick main standard colors (red, yellow, green, blue, orange, cyan) I noticed it was doing a good job of notifying me and the colors were unique and visible in all light conditions. For emails I have a long delay, for texts I have a medium delay, for missed calls I have a short delay, for missed calls messages or mms or voicemail from wife I have an extra short delay.
The only gripe I would say I have with lightflow is that it seems to stop notifying if not used for a while. Sort of like it's being dumped out of memory and needs to be restarted.

I'm trying to figure out if I have a hardware issue but im starting to doubt that too. I really don't want to do a factory reset but it may come to that. when the battery is low ~5% the led will blink bright red when unplugging, and bright blue when plugging in so it seems like its capable of going bright. driving me nuts that its not bright enough to see during normal operation.

is it technically/physically/electronically possible that the LED camera Flash on the back on the Android phones be run at lower brightness intensity by software? - I mean as I understand it the 'flash' is not a xenon flash, its just an ordinary light emitting diode (LED) but just a very high brightness LED - but all the same like any other LED it should technically therefore support different brightness settings (even if only down to 10% of its full brightness) should it not? maybe by the software applying different lower voltages to the LED in the particular app?
The reason I ask is that I prefer to use flash call alert apps and these tend to use the rear camera flash (some use front screen display as well but I prefer to divert the alert to flash the camera flash light instead of the screen) so in all of these flash alert (for ringing/missed call/ unread SMS) that I have ever tried from Google Play not one of them has ever featured a way to lower the brightness of the LED Flash to a lower percentage of brightness - is this because there is no way technically to lower the brightness of the camera LED and that there is only 2 operational modes of Totally off or Totally on, full brightness of the LED state only or have app developers not realised that it would be a useful feature of their app? - I have my mobile phone in my shirt pocket most of the time, its a large 5.5" phone and the LED flash sits above the pocket and when the flash alert call goes off the LED flash 'blinds' the person standing across me because it flashes at full 100% brightness!
So does any technical person on XDA know if its technically possible to adjust the brightness of a rear camera flash LED? - or has anyone seen a flash alert app on Google Play where one of the features is that you can lower the brightness intensity of the flash? Thanks.
Yes
I have seen flashlight apps that allow the user to reduce the intensity of the flash LED. In fact, I used one for a while. But I'm not sure if this capability has been put into any notification apps. It also might depend on your phones hardware. My old phone was able to get that flashlight app from Google Play, but because it customizes the appstore to your phone's compatibilities, an app might not show up for you because of your phone's hardware's limitations. I'll keep my eye out for such an app though.
is there an app that imitates the function of a notification LED, without said LED? since I got my new J7 Metal I've been looking at apps that turn the screen on (the best bet so far) but they are not very smart, and just turn the screen on and then off again. I think the ideal would be to have a program that lights up the screen every X minutes if the user never checked the notifications.
also, would be optimal if the program used a black background, so we could save on battery thanks to the AMOLED display <³
Take a look at this .....
