And I'm not sure I want to stay in the HTC family if they haven't released graphic driver software that can actually make their phones usable.
The phone I'm looking to upgrade to is the HTC Touch Pro 2. So I'm wondering, does anyone have this phone? If so, does it have the appropriate 2D and 3D drivers it should (10fps for video is f**king insanity)?
Finally, if not, what would be a good upgrade from the Kaiser (and don't say the Touch Pro, because it was also released without it's drivers)?
Regarding Touch Pro 2
Have a look on it´s proper section, you can read experiences and recommendations from several users

I am in the same boat - I can renew my contract at at&t and get a cheap new phone.
I really dislike HTC for the stunts they pulled with the Kaiser drivers.
I am actually eyeing the iphone. If they had it with a 1 year contract, I would jump on it in a sec (even if it was $100 more to buy).
The iphone is a fascinating device indeed. I would love to have one, specially one of the recent 3GS with 32GB memory.
It comes full with functionality, there is plenty of software for it and above all, it has a great user interface and design. It is great to use.
But, there is a major inconvinience: it costs a fortune!
I mean 600 Euro or more for an unlocked iphone, or the equivalent level for plans is very expensive.
Add to that the vulnerabily of the device (never ever drop it, scratch it and take care to not grease the glass all the time), it is a headache to own one.
HTC devices, on the other hand, have two appealing characteristics: they can be obtained cheap (because they do have a long lifetime, so they end up cheap on ebay for a good value price) and they can be hacked, modded and expanded at your hearts will.
Conclusion:
1) If you have the money.
2) If you prefer to USE the device instead of HACKING it.
Get yourself the iphone. You will be happy with it.
Otherwise, just get the HTC one you fancy and live with its limitation, enjoying all the stuff you can do with it (new firmware, cooked firmware, lots of applications, customizations, etc.).
Cheers,
vma

I am in the same boat as the original poster. I am looking for a new phone since my iphone 2g has the dreaded dead strip which is common for the iphone.
At first when it happened I instantly wanted to replace the iphone with another one however on craiglist the 2g were still going for around $150 to $200. However again these were used and most likely were going to start crapping out just like my current. On mine the volume buttons began get stuck and eventually from trying to plug them out ended up coming off. Then I explored the option of a newer 3g since it is better phone overall of the 2g with better form factor and speakerphone. However they were going for $250 to $300 but then again with no warranty. Also since I am taking it to tmobile it would be without 3g.
So yeah the iphone is expensive choice for me since the same plan I have now on ATT would cost me $65 more a month which is $780 more a year. If I decide to take with tmobile then I am paying $300 for an iphone that does not have a warranty. The one year warranty is ridiculous for a phone that retails for $600.
get the touch pro 2 on tmobile 8/12 and be very happy
Hello everyone!
I'm on sprint. And usually id say all high-end android phones on sprint are around $549. I searched the sg2 on eBay and the UK version was around $700-$800!!! Will it be like this for usa sprint users too?! If it is, I'll probably go for the evo 3d.
Thank You!
The ones which are being sold on eBay and Amazon.com are indeed from other countries (mostly European). That price may include int'l shipping and possibly some taxes. That's why it's so expensive.
A no-contract i9100 is £435 on Amazon.co.uk, which roughly converts to $700 - a reasonable guess for the American version release price.
so you think all version will be $700? thats a lot of money for a phone!
Well, I've paid a bit more than that on my SGS2 - I had the chance to buy one while I was travelling abroad
I can't say it was a bad deal as I'm from Brazil, where an unlocked SGS2 costs much more than that...
But hey, this phone is 55 days old or so... its price will certainly drop. Just look how cheap SGS is nowadays
it hasnt even been released in the usa yet! but how is it? is it really good for the price? and idk if you ever heard of the evo 3d, well if you have, whats better sg2 or evo 3d?
It was my first Android device (my previous phone was a Nokia N85 - Symbian) and I must say it's impressively fast when compared to any other Android phone I could see from friends. Everything is perfect - if I must point something bad about it I could mention the battery, which rarely lasts more than 24h, but I'm pretty sure that will be solved with the next Android update (2.3.4).
I haven't checked Evo 3D specs, so I cannot really say much about it - there must be reviews comparing them somewhere else. What I have got is a Nintendo 3DS, and if Evo 3D uses the same effect, it's probably pretty cool! However, some of my friends had issues with the Nintendo 3DS effect causing headaches...
ty for reply! this phone looks amazing! best android phone out there! could you tell me some more stuff about galaxy s 2 that will blow my mind lol? what else is amazing? whats bad?
Well, most of the stuff I'm really impressed about are just Android features other phones have, as this was my first one - but the SGS2 just do all of them faster
The SGS2 screen is its key feature, and it is really nice. The camera is great for both photos and videos (1080p). There is also a software called Kies Air which enables me to connect to my phone and control it right from my web browser wirelessly, pretty easy to get any files inside it.
The only problem I've had so far is with the battery, as I mentioned before =/
this phone looms amazing!! If it is really expensive above $700 I might just get evo 3d. I really want this tho!
What is the difference between iPod Touch and iPhone? A $5 GSM/CDMA chip? Why $400 price difference?
Large screen Android tablets can be had for $200. Why unlocked phones are $600-800?
Sorry if it's been discussed, my search didn't find a good topic on the subject.
Wow, no answers! Noone else is interested in this question?

Which?
They're expensive because of convenience, demand. people want it they gotta pay....

They are so expensive, because people buy them anyways.
Manufactors and carriers are all after our money, why should they lower the price.
Besides that some devices also have to pay back the research that went into developing them.
Don't have any idea why unlocked phones are costlier but it you compare tablet and phone, size does matter. Smaller, faster and costier.
go overseas and see the prices some can have more then a hundred dollars difference even if they are the same devices
The price triples at the 3rd world countries. I wonder why.
Yeah, you're lucky for not live in a country like Brazil, there a smartphone like S2 or Iphone4 costs around 1000,00 US$ bucks...
well maybe unlucking phone is expensive because its not really designated in any other area than the original area, but the publisher wants to publicly sale it to other region. that can be the cause too
Development is expensive.
You buy a brand, this is why most of the time you pay double.. buy another phone with the same specs but with a non popular brand and you will pay less...
Not to mention that you are talking about Apple...
All your reasoning would apply for everything else electronic- TVs, MP3 or Blue Ray players, etc. Yet they all keep coming down in prices. But not the phones.
Yea, good question I was wondering the same.
It really is a gigantic gap between say an Iphone and Ipod touch in terms of price, yet the hardware has very little difference.
Seems like a marketing thing, as most users will want all the goodies packed together in a small package + a phone in one device.
It's a conspiracy i tell yea
You should see it like this. When you buy a phone, you pay for the development, the construction, the shipping, the people who check it, the people who made the software. add that up with an expensive casing (like HTC has.) and the euro's (or dollars) fly onto the price tag. With Apple, I don't know, they just rip your wallet.
Smartphones are still upcomming, with new technology added every time a new device is being developed.
Why is SSD more expensive than a normal HDD, because it's a new technology. DVD drives used to be really expensive aswell, look at them now they aren't so expensive anymore.
Anything that's new has a price, and it's your choice if you want to pay for it or not.
I hope this helps.
It's not that unbranded phones are more expensive, the price just isn't subsidised by the network operators.
Network operators sell you the handset at a loss, but tie you into a contract to recoup their initial cost. Customer inertia means there's a good chance you'll stay with them.
well they give you much more ie. i have an ace and i can do everything what i usually do on my pc... except gaming ofc.
Unlocked phones are not only expensive because of the demand. When you buy one on contract, you are going to end up paying over $1000 over the 2 year contract anyways. That's why they discount smartphones so much on contract, they know they will get paid back from the contract.

I'm guessing prices don't come down on phones because carriers subsidize prices. Manufacturers know that and therefore prices will stay rather high. Having said that, development on new phone technology is going at a fast rate right now so manufacturers also are recouping those costs.

Everything else also has to be developed, designed, engineered, assembled, shipped and retailed. In fact, iPod was developed before iPhone and they mostly made of the same parts.
Also, if you look at pricing for prepaid phones, I don't think that carriers subsidize that much. Mostly they hike their prices to force us in their contracts.
A week or so ago I saw a link on one of the "deal tracking" sites, an HTC tablet was offered for the same price with no contract or service as the "discounted" price from Sprint.
theyre expensives due to all research and work of the engineers...and of course to obtain more money from all of us...you want the finest and latest technology from theirs...you have to pay whatever their wants...
Recently I have been thinking if I should get a new tablet brands ppl usually never heard of or get those big names, like Samsung or nexus.
The advantage of buying a tablet from big companies is the quality and service, but I have using my iPad for many years and never enjoyed any service benefit. Besides the price of an iPad is enough for me to get 2 Android tablet.
I have been working on the research of some new brands, like Neu, ProntoTec and RecPad. I found that they actually offers much better value than those big names, especially RecPad(rectonics.com), they offer a 9'' 1.8GHz quad-core high performance tablet for only 199.
What kind of tablet should I choose?

if you have money and you want to try them ...then try the new stuff
if you don't have all that money then buy your tablet from known companies cuz you know what and how is the performance in it
Both new and big brands provide godd phones at an affordable price range
If you are looking for services big brands provide better service than the new brands
But some new brands are providing phones with same specifications that big brands provide,at a lower price....
Anyway you must ensure quality before purchasing....
If you want to save money, buy a tablet from a known brand, but from a generation or two previous. You can get a Samsung Tab Pro 8.4 for $235 with Snapdragon 800 2.3GHz and 2gb RAM, or the 10.1" for $320.
The RecPad looks interesting, but can you trust that it'll be worth what you're paying, even with the low price? What kind of processor is it? Mediatek? Rocketchip? Intel? What about service/repair? It just all seems like a gamble to me, without any history or reviews to assuage the apprehension of dropping $200.
As per my view if you change your gadget often then you should go for cheaper one, but if you are looking for a long term device then you should go for brands. I have noticed that you may get more features in cheaper tabs but the quality and processing of a branded tab is better than it. rest depends on your choice.
So I've been looking into getting a new phone, and I've been seeing some of these cheap clone phones, looking like Mate 40 or other $700+ phones but being less than $200. They claim to still have a decent processor and screen and all that. The one in particular I'm looking at has a 7.3" screen and 6800mAh battery (or so it claims) form AliExpress. But I'm wondering if it's worth the risk. I messaged the seller and they said if it doesn't work well on AT&T here in the states I can return it, but the return shipping could be $50 or something else obnoxious (and at that point I could probably just resell it here as long as it works OK at least). So the question is, is it worth the risk? Would you risk it, to potentially save $300 on a proper midrange phone? Or would you rather just spend the money and take the (relative) guarantee that your phone is gonna be a good device? The phone I would buy if I wasn't considering the cheap clone is a Motorola Edge S. Here's links to the two phones I'm looking at from AliExpress:
Motorola Edge S
Some kind of funky knock-off/clone
What do you all think?
PS: I'm not really interested in rooting or anything like that, honestly just don't need it. 99% of my phone usage is texting, calling, browsing the web, or watching videos. So as long as its response time is decent and it has a decent screen, it really should be fine.
No. I much rather buy something not made in China especially devices connected to the internet and my data.
I have zero confidence in their integrity.
Most phone's offered on AliExpress and comparable sources for little money aren't clones but fakes, means the device specs claimed aren't true at all.
My advice: Let your fingers off it.
