Suggest a good mail program. - XPERIA X10 Themes and Apps

After seeing the iPhone 4.0 way of handling mail, I kinda feel like the android is behind in this area. Or it could be I just don't know of a good mail application.
I've used K9 and Moxier(of course) but both seem very lacking in fluidity and overall appearance.
Also any app I use that checks mail automatically drains my battery *fast*
Here's a screen of my battery with and without automatic mail updates on.
Both are when the phone is supposed to be sleeping.

The reason I want an app to check mail automatically other than my default gmail address is I have other addresses I use for work and would like to be notified as I get mail and not have to do it manually all without worrying about my battery being drained uber fast.

i always use K-9 ive not found any other worth using really.

Yeah, it works ok if I update manually. Automatic is another story, however.

try with maildroid, it is in the market and it is free.... Works fine in my X10

its okay kinda clunky when scrolling through your email. It doesn't save your emails so yeh it kinda bogs down.

I tried maildroid too.. wasn't keen - back to k-9..

i tried a lot and K9 does it for me the best so far as well.
Cheers,
Arnold

re:
I am the maildroiddev. Sorry MailDroid is not working well for you. For the person who mentioned the lag when scrolling, this is fixed in version 1.25 (available in the next day or so). I am always looking for feedback and comments to make it better though.

Sorry to disappoint you but the best of the apps (like K-9) concentrate on providing functionality rather than appearance. K-9 is one of the most fully featured mail apps that I've found so far.
The issue with the battery drain can be resolved simply by using push email providers. Polling is inherently inefficient and probably in your case causing the battery drain (even though I dont really think so, just by looking at the graphs you posted).

now now, no need for the insults . I don't use an iPhone, nor do I touch them often. I saw one and was impressed and wondered if there was something that had that level of fluidity. Is it a crime that I ask publicly about some secret gem that might be hiding under various radars? .

I wonder how the native gmail app handles it? I get an email alert as I get sent mail yet battery drain is extremely low. Does Gmail and this app utilize the push thing that you're speaking of? I believe my problem would be solved via the android update which allows multiple mail accounts instead of just one.
@joelangley
Cheers for being a great developer . I look forward to trying out your update .

Apologizes for the double post + bump. I just want to state that after using maildroid for the 2 weeks I'm extremely impressed. Battery drain is at a minimum and I get updates from my other accounts nearly instantly. There are occasions when I haven't been notified but those times have been few and far between.
Good job maildroid . Now if only the ui can be updated with a bit more polish it'd be golden .

[Q] Why is the android facebook so terrible?

Who do we have to contact to get a decent Facebook app?? I don't use it all the much but when I do use it it makes me want to cry... lol
I wonder the same thing, you get linked to the mobile website to do just about anything, so what purpose is the app serving? it's a complete fail compared to the iphone version
... because the iPhone version gets all the attention ... which is a shame.
I've been using the "touch" version of Facebook and it's great.
Just be glad it isn't the Windows Mobile (not even made by Facebook, but Microsoft) version I was using before I jumped shipped to Android. eewwwwwww
haha but honestly there are more android users now than iphone... you would think they would start to do something about it... I almost never get notifications... fail.... haha
I agree is horrible if I wanna use browser I wouldn't need I'm app pointless I rather use the browser why do I need an app that's gonna take space and still gonna send me to the browser I rather go straight so I don't waste time.

You might want to check your math on that one. Just because Android has started outselling iOS in recent months doesn't mean there are more people using it.

So true. I miss my notifications. Then when I click on the app notifications it takes me to the mobile version of Facebook instead of the app version. It makes no sense. You also can't click on a persons profile pic, it'll take you to their profile as opposed to their pick.

The notifications on the iPhone facebook were realtime, meaning there was no check or if there was it was about a 2 minute check. Perhaps that's AT&T's handywork.

P.S. I hope they update this app, its buggy and lacks some pretty basic functionality.

Yes, the app sucks big time, especially compared to the iOS version. Does facebook even make the android app? I thought I read at one point some 3rd party company made it. That the only ones facebook makes are the Blackberry and iOS versions.
But no way there are more android users than iOS. Its not even close. Android is finally selling more phones than iphones, but that doesnt even include ipod touches, or ipads. Also, iphone had a huge lead in total users. At the pace they're both going at, it will be years before android surpasses iOS in total users.

Yes, the iphone version used push notifications, so the alerts were in real time. The android version you have to set the check interval. MAybe that will change once 2.2 becomes more universally adopted because 2.2 now has something similar to push notifications.
All it really needs is Video Upload and to stop redirecting you to the browser.

[APP] Cloud to SMS beta

Cloud to SMS allows you to send messages from your browser, through your phone using the Android notification system (C2DM). The purpose of the app is to allow users (You!) to send SMS messages using their phones existing carrier account without having to touch their phone.
Requires Froyo (Android 2.2) or higher.

Beta of "free" version released to marketplace.
Allows you to send up to 7 messages a day, premium version beta coming in a few days with a release in about 2 weeks.
Grab the beta of the Chrome extension here: http://www.cloudtosms.com/files/cloudtosms-chrome-extension.crx
Feedback welcome
In case anyone is interested, this app is now in Beta and I will be releasing it to market soon.
Send and receive SMS messages from the website
All messages secured by SSL both ways
I will be making a Chrome plugin very soon so you don't need to browse to the website to send/receive.
http://www.cloudtosms.com/?page_id=15
This app has a ton of potential. Can't wait for that Chrome extension!
I could see this having a ton of uses. One being it could grab an entire group of contacts from your Gmail account (or export them from what ever place you prefer to store your contacts and import them directly to the online app -though kind of a concern issue for obvious security reasons). Then you could send bulk Txt's much easier than directly on the phone. It could even schedule them, etc. I frequently have to send out mass texts to different groups and it could save me a lot of time every week if it had those functions.
Feel free to PM me for brainstorming!
Thanks for the feedback.
Will definitely add "Groups" in a future version of the webapp.
I don't store any contacts on the server, its all handled by javascript on the client side (e.g. by your computers browser). If there are other contact sources that work like the Google Contacts API (e.g. allow un-cached display of contacts) I could attempt to add support.
Scheduling is an interesting idea and something to consider in future versions.
One thing to keep in mind is Google limit the amount of messages sent through C2DM, so bulk messages would only work to a certain point.
wonderful app, tons of potential. works perfectly on my spica running cm6.1 rc1. thanks rolf!
Very cool concept. I'll try it out shortly.
First release of the chrome extension is good to go. I haven't tested it on any PC's aside from my own so it might not work, please advise if you try it out:
http://www.cloudtosms.com/?page_id=15
nice man, keep it up
This is an awesome app!!! Runs fast and smooth on my Desire with Teppics pre-rooted stock rom.
Two things:
I would like to able to prevent the notification sound when sending messages. I thought I could turn it off in Settings but either I cannot understand the meaning of "Use notification sound" or the feature doesn't work ;-)
Also an option to prevent the status bar notification icon and notification entry would be nice.
Otherwise awesome!
[edit]
Oh! One more thing: The web page (https://cloudtosms.appspot.com/) seems to hang when fetching contacts (I have about 250 contacts)...
And of course Google Apps support would also be nice so that I don't have to manually export/import my contacts between two accounts.
[/edit]
./kroogar
AWESOME!
This is what I have been waiting for forever!
Chrome extension is awesome, would love a firefox one, too.
Even better would be a standalone app.
Also push ALL notifications from phone back to the cloud.
You would be truly amazing.
Cannot load page
This morning (as of right now) I cannot load the page https://cloudtosms.appspot.com in either Chrome or Firefox. It seems there is a piece of JavaScript that will not load. The page hangs until the browser complains. It's preventing me from logging in :-(
I'm using Chrome 9.0.570.0 and Firefox 3.6.12.
[edit]
Actually managed to get to the log in page by pressing the Sign in link as soon as the page starts loading. After log in the page still hangs trying to fetch my contacts...
[/edit]
I think this might be the pubnub servers being slow. I might cache their Javascript to fix this problem. Can you confirm if the problem is still occuring?
EDIT: this should be fixed now
the feedbak for this app is really good, but I still don't get what is this for. Maybe a short explanation would be a good idea.
Thanks!

Hmm... now nine hours after my attempt this morning I have conquered the snow and reached home - unfortunately just to realize the problem still occurs :-( In Chrome I'm already signed in and it just sits there fetching contacts. In Firefox I'm not signed in and problem is the same as described earlier.
I have not at any point been able to see my contacts on the web page. They do seem to be loaded just fine in the Chrome extension though...
Maybe you like a another icon? Today i created one... maybe you like it..
Let me know what you think about it
Hrm... Darn Javascript.
If you press ctrl+shift+j in Chrome or Forefox it will show the Javascript error console, does this show you any errors?
Does it work if you browse incognito?
If you want to email me kroogar to get instant responses please feel free (my username at gmail.com)
Sinas: it is a much cleaner icon, I will try it in the build and see how it looks
Installed and working with minimal fuss. Very impressed (currently using sms2pc)
However, despite refreshing the chrome tab only 361 of my 500+ contacts appear. Same happens through the webpage. Happy to help test larger contact lists if it helps
Super job so far.

New App - Live Profile - Multi Platform Messenger

I found this app last week and have been very impressed with it, it's currently in beta stage now on Android, and will support Android, Blackberry, & iPhone.
It works with a pin, has unlimited messaging, no restriction on character limits etc. You can use this as a stand alone app or as your sms text app as well.
It shows current status, message delivered indicator, message read indicator and more.
A very nice start to what looks to be a very promising app for all smart phones.

Damn. Hoped you meant a multi-network app. Like MSN/Aim/Yahoo and so on. Not another BBM remake. We already got PingChat and WhatsApp.
I wasn't aware of ping chat... it looks to be nice as well.... this is just what I found and it works so fast and simple, I thought I would share it.
One main difference I see is the other apps only work for those that have the app installed... as this will also work as your sms/text messenger.
I haven't tested the others yet.. but I will now to see how they compare.
Using PingChat but will give this a try, thanks!
But I don't think I'll use it regulary since everyone knows im using PingChat
this to BBM?
how do i add a friend that uses a blackberry? can they use their BBM program or do they have to get this program? where do i find their pin?
are the sms free as well?
Just use WhatsApp..
It already does everything this can do, its out and it integrates with your phone contacts
Live Profile will be nice when it releases the iPhone and Blackberry apps.
I've been using Kik Messenger (http://kik.com/) and have been really liking it.

just another pingchat & whatsapp application????

So this thing uses polling and not push? No, thanks...
ok well after some playing this app certainly polls. My phone, which typically gets me 2 days of light to moderate usage, went from 100% charge down to 7% in 6 hours. Additionally taking a look at the comments in the market you can see others are noticing it as well. The problem is a phone must function as a phone first, all other stuff is secondary. If the phone cannot maintain a charge, it's a $500 paperweight.
You have an awesome app so I'd like to make some suggestions and let me preface by saying i make them with all due respect.
- You really need to push not poll. This saves a ton on battery as the server is doing the heavy lifting and also means no need for a wakelock
- With the suggestion above it means you may need to adjust your business model. Servers come at a cost, you have the initial purchase, maintenance, plus monthly charges of running them (power, broadband). the way BlackBerry gets away with this is by indirectly charging the customer straight through the carrier. When you purchase a BB you get a nice little BB tax of $20 or $30 thrown onto your bill which covers monthly use of the push servers for such things as email and BB messenger. You cant do this, nobody would pay an extra monthly fee so you will need to think outside of the box.
a) look into using admob and putting adds into the settings menus and other non-intrusive places. This should hopefully cover some of the costs.
b) Charge for the app upfront (this is in addition to the ad's). Charge a buck or two at the time of purchase.
c) Make it more than just Liveprofile messages and text. Add in some other services to make this a must have app such as facebook chat or gtalk which would also be pushed through the server. People would buy an app with facebook chat that does push for that purpose alone! I suggested gtalk as well because of its deep integration to google, with android getting as large as it is, gtalk is becoming more and more popular. The current gtalk app that comes with android is push, works beautifully, and barely uses battery.
d) Maybe think of a way to create a group license package that you could market to large companies which could help bring in lump sums of cash plus the additional exposure to the ad's (point a).
here is a link to an article which you may find of value.
Again great work. I hope to see this with push servers in the near future because i can easily see this becoming everyones "must have" application.

I am going to talk about a plug-in I wrote for the Sony Ericsson LiveView.
However, if you guys wish to discuss development for that device or how to make it work better, this is also welcome because it is both intriguing and under-represented (and a bit maddening at times)
Anyway, I was flabbergasted when I realized that there isn't any straightforward "watch" plug-in for the LiveView so in a couple hours I figured out how to use the SDK and created one.
I am not releasing it yet and I will only make it available it there is interest for it and I get the appropriate permissions from the people whose art I have used for this proof of concept app.
By the way, more face and hands art would be welcome!
A few (terrible) screenshots:
My LiveView was sent from the website i ordered it from, today=) I would really such an addon=)
And i can make you some artwork if i get something to work with=)
Oh, that's good.
I hope it works well for you. The device losing its pairing can be quite aggravating.
On the other hand it is a breeze to develop for; actually simpler than writing a home screen widget.
A friend of mine got it last week and said that he had lost his pairing once since he got it set up.
To me no development is a breeze i know squat about programing
But as said i would love to make you some graphics you could use so that you can release this=)
^^
I just received a sms from my post office that my LiveView had arrived
and here are a little graphic preview of some artwork you might use(?) It shows the whole thing, background, minute hand and hour hand=)
I really think you should release this addon
Ha! I like it a lot, in fact.
Can you post it as three files as described at http://www.voilaweb.com/lv_faq#createtheme?
Oh, and I updated the OP with a link to the beta apk
Will do, Just have to make some minor changes as the big and short hand are the same. and also added some indicators on the clock face.
Edit: Also, will you support this addon? i mean like bugs and stuff?
I guess, I will have to, yes
So, anyone go any feedback for me?
hey man.
i just installed your app from market and it's looking great.
i guess you can make a clock with digits or maybe a digital one.
it still disconnects but at least i have a watch
one other thing maybe you can ad an always on screen option
MrJay, first off, thanks for your feedback
The "always on" option would be nice but I invite you to think about this some more...say until your device dies on you because its damn battery is already too weak for the plug-in's current version
EDIT: OK I really don't want to sound negative. The device is really nice. I just wish it had better connectivity and battery life.
In fact, the tricks I read on how to force it to reconnect using AutomateIt, etc., end up sucking battery life like crazy.
The only thing i have to say about this addon, is that its a bit slow to update when i wake the screen. might take a sec before the clock shows the correct time.
Other than that, i love it
Thanks Marius.
Yes, I know about the 1 sec. delay it's due to sending as few updates to the device as possible, to improve battery life.
But maybe I could slightly alter this behavior for a "wake up" event.
BTW, I hope you guys are using the version from the market! It's free, but more likely to get updates than the one on my blog.

Well, Spitfire, so do I. I ordered from these guys: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004E2V4NM and it was shipped from Florida.
Have you updated this with any new themes?

Awesome design. I fear that the LiveView's limited resolution will not be able to display something this complex, though. Not even something as good-looking as a TikTok

[2.1+][APP] Text Notify

This app is simple but useful for people that heavily use full screen apps (games/browsers/ect). It gives a nice little notification that shows the text message/email you just received, allowing you to decide if it's worth quitting your app to reply to it (see picture), even if you're in another app! You can turn the notifications on and off via the main screen. The best part of it is you can play and the notification will not interfere with your touch on the game. It might also have the simplest options menu.
FEATURE LIST:
Works with third party SMS applications
Now supports K9 Mail (requires K9 Mail for functionality)
Shows the sender (name from contacts list or number if contact doesn't exist)
Shows the sender and contents of the message
Low profile
Doesn't interfere with the touch interface of whatever task you are doing
Easy to turn on or off just by the touch of a checkbox
Lightweight
No more quitting Angry Birds just to see that someone texted you "lol"
Works in portrait and landscape orientations
Permissions explained:
Read SMS: So that it can read the text to show you
Read contacts: so that it can see if anyone in your contacts shares the same number and the text sender
Please report any bugs to me.
P.S. I know this is a VERY simplistic app and may seem pointless. If you feel that way that is fine, however I have had a lot of people that laughed at it originally tell me they can't use any full screen app without and they never turn it off. So I simply ask you give constructive criticism. Thank you!

Paid Version: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riley.textnotifydonate
Now has a paid version with more features:
Custom background and text colors
Custom notification display times
Optional border and border color
Option of rounded or square corners
This was just what I was looking for mate, testing now seems to be working just fine
Thanks, appreciate the download and feedback.
Does it supports other email applications as Gmail, also?

Unfortunately Google currently doesn't allow outside apps access to Gmail emails or the standard email client. If they change this stance, I will update asap.
OK, I see...
Meanwhile, I installed and tested it (my ROM is at my sig) and it is working perfectly with the GoSMS I have installed...
Thank you!
No problem! Glad it works for you (as it should lol)
thanks, works on nexus s with ICS /)

Awesome! Thanks for the reply.
clears a lot of hassle of pop up! thanx
Crazy, I was literally just thinking it would be cool to have something exactly like this on my SGS2 when I was playing Star Diamonds Capture... it's an online multiplayer game that you can't really back out of unless you want to risk losing the match, but I always want to make sure I'm not ignoring an important text.
Thanks, I will let you know how it runs and if you stay active as a dev I will support your efforts as much as possible.

Thanks! Just released my second app, and started working on my third last night. Glad you enjoy!
Can you make the toast message last longer? It disappears very quick.. Just a half second longer would suffice and not interfere with games

Could you check this application (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.nlucas.notificationtoasterlite&feature=related_apps) that have access to Gmail, maybe to see if it is possible to be done with yours, too?

From what I see, it doesn't actually show you what the email says or who it's from, just that you have an email. Maybe I can just say you have a new Gmail Email haha

Sorry, from the description I assumed that it works the same way as with SMS
Sent from my HD2
Love it! Using it in conjunction with SMS Popup (SMS Popup only pops up when the screen's off).
Definitely an excellent utility!
