I'm very close to getting the guts to change from the att "dark side" and get to this gorgious HTC ROM I hear so much about but a few last questions...
anyone have any problems with phone, 3g, or edge connectivity using HTC ROM?
does the HTC ROM show the "E" or "3G" at the top of the screen like my currently does to tell me which I'm on and what my signal strength is?
anything else I should know about before doing the switch in functionality or connectivity that I would lose with the HTC ROM?
Thanks
I can't tell you about E because when I reset, I go immediately from a momentary G to 3G.
I get H whenever I am in an active data transfer.
The indicator is the same as the Tilt ROM... Although I never saw a H on the Tilt...
You won't loose anything.

There are no problems, however as I've posted in a couple of other threads, there really isn't much to gain by moving to the HTC ROM except memory (which there is no shortage of in the ATT ROM) and the WorldCard Mobile business card OCR scanning application. Anything else you gain can also be enabled in the ATT ROM and you don't potentially void your warranty by performing a CID unlock.
Anyone successfully TETHER to laptop using the HTC ROM? Is there a icon in CONNECTION SETTINGS for MODEM?
That is the last thing I can think of that I would be pissed to lose if I moved from ATT to HTC ROM.
Thanks guys
Hello every one my name is Mike S.
I am the owner of a site called PremiumReview, i do reviews on Android base phones and other little things.
I'm looking to get a new Android phone I REALLY want the HTC Desire. But a few things its only available at telus and im on rogers(that's easy solvable, get it unlocked).
the biggest problem i am having is the telus does not have a EDGE/GSM network and only a CDMA/GSM. So I can load the phone up fine it will connect to rogers 3G network but if i get out of coverage of rogers 3G it loses all signal because the telus ROM on the phone doesn't know to look for EDGE only CDMA(that rogers doesnt have). So my questions is
1)how can I make the phone see Rogers EDGE network? and I would like to keep the HTC Sence UI
2)Dose any one have a modified ROM that they could send me / that could possiably unlock it to possiably a paypal cash reward. Expacly if it unlocks it to
I just bought a HTC desire (telus brand) to use on the att network. Will I have the same problem?
Sometimes while the battery is low, I like to put the phone into 2G mode also known as edge and get off the 4G network. I remember my myTouch had this with cyanogen and really any other asop Rom also had it.
How do we enable it on a device running sense? Or this phone for this case.
Thanks

It should be under the Mobile Network sub menu.. it's not ASOP or Cyanogen exclusive.
The option doesn't exist for us on our ROM. I like that feature too. Here is a workaround. Go into your dialer and type in *#*#4636#*#* and a menu will pop up. Go to Phone Information and you'll see a drop down that shows WCDMA Preferred as the default. Go into the drop down menu and choose GSM Only. It will cycle the radio off and then back on and then you will have Edge only. Alternatively if you select WCDMA Only, you will only ever have 4G. This is useful if you live in an area that is right on the cusp on 2G/4G. Our phones will drop to Edge if the Edge signal is stronger than the HSPA signal. Sometimes this is annoying since you could still have 4G speed if the phone didn't automatically switch to Edge.
Also, I don't remember who the dev is, but there is an app in the Market called Network. This app allows you to go right into that phone info menu mentioned above without needing to put that code into the dialer. It can be hard to find since there are so many search results if you search for "network" in the Market. If you are interested I will look up the devs name for you and you can find it that way. Hope this helps.
Edit: The person above is correct actually, I didn't see it before but you can choose WCDMA/GSM Auto, GSM Only or WCDMA Only from that Mobile Network submenu in the Wireless & Networks menu in your standard settings menu. Thank you for pointing that out.

Putting 2g only on kills battery faster....harder for stuff to sync faster ...phone stays awake longer. Google put out a whole video on YouTube about it.

wow, totally forgot to try this trick at work. My phone sits there with a full strength 2G signal, but the bars lie, it's very unreliable and cripplingly slow (much slower than edge is capable of). Now I have a 1-2 bar 4G signal and am getting very acceptable speeds. 1.8Mbps down 1.3Mbps up (FCC mobile broadband test, 3 tests averaged).
I just wanted to add that I hunted around for widgets to provide a quick toggle for this function, whether that be forcing GSM as some need to do, or forcing WCDMA as others need to. My search turned up a few like EasySwitch but it seems that none of them work with gingerbread.
No need for the special code...
You can find that here too:
Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > Network Mode

Best option is menu>settings>power>"enable power efficiency"
The S series, and Sensation, use less power in 3G mode than in 2G mode. RTFM.

Keeping it on disk space may use more battery charge, but it helps preserve my 2GB 4G data cap. It seems like a reasonable trade-off for me. Does anyone know if the "Data Used" number shown under the "My Account" app is accurate?

it should be under the pulldown notifications bar? or at least I think I remember seeing an option for it on CM9/AOKP. itll have your list of toggles and should have "2G" listed as well. havent tried it out tho cuz Im on Sense now, and if I ever have EDGE data, I usually just connect to WiFi (lol only at my house, service sucks)
I hope this is the right place to ask. If not please let me know so I can post correctly.
I have been trying to find a Sense ROM for the HTC Inspire 4G that will actually allow for switching between "3G/2G" and "2G only" (forcing the EDGE network) due to poor 3G signal at work. I went down the list of Sense ROMs for the phone and installed them to test. Thus far no love. I am aware of the "*#*#4636#*#*" in the dialer and choosing the appropriate network but "GSM only" will not work. It just keeps using the 3G network regardless of the selection. I have spent a month trying to figure out how to do this whether it be via ROM or other methods such as adb push. At this point I have found nothing that will work long term. I have found one time fixes on a couple of ROMS which only work upon one boot. After rebooting the phone, the process has to be repeated (involves installing a radio). Other fixes make "2G only" permanent which I do not want.
I am pretty sure this is not hardware lock because CM versions allow for the switching and locking in bands with no issues. I am convinced it has to be a lockout by the HTC software. I would prefer a Sense ROM due to faster camera and other things, but with the extremely poor 3G signal at work, my battery life is being mutilated by the constant switching between 3G and 2G bands making Sense a no-go.
I am not looking for a toggle switch. I just want the ability to switch between the two at will on a Sense based ROM. If any one has a fix or a ROM that works consistently and long term please let me know. It is greatly appreciated.
Try doing Android Revolution HD worked for me both 3G and 4G plus 2G

I am not looking for the toggle apps. I am wanting a Sense ROM for the HTC Inspire that will actually allow me to force GSM only mode (2G only). Thus far no luck, even with ARHD. I have only been able to force 2G only in non sense roms such as CM7. I want to know if there is a Sense ROM that allows for it on the Inspire and if so, perhaps there are additional settings I missed. I know how to utilize the *#*#4636#*#* menu to select the "GSM only" option but regardless it always goes right back to showing the H+ and AT&T's fake 4G mode. GSM only seems to be disabled completely.

I am not sure. I have narrowed it down to one of two things - either it is software or firmware. The 2G only works fine on AOSP style ROMs such as CM, Gingerbeast, and aospX. Sense ROMs are a no go though, including ones for the Desire HD which is what leads me to believe it may be firmware.
I was running the sabsa prime rom which is a sense based rom ans was unable to find a toggle like you are looking for. I am now using the jellytime rom by randomblade and it has the ability to force edge network or 2g in the settings.

This is probably the most noob-sih question asked on these forums, i don't know if it is or not though, anyways,
I have a HTC Sensation 4G and when i flash any Rom on it and gt it all set up it displays it it connected to '3G' or 'H'
Is there a way to restore 4G or is it really on 4G but the rom displays it as 3G/H?

Technicly nothing is 'really' 4G yet. It's just a marketing gimmick.
Depending on what rom/theme you are using you can get a mod to make the H turn into 4G. Looking in the Themes and Apps section adn search for '4g icon' or something similar. It will give you whta you want. I don't think the mod works with all roms though so read the thread you find it in carefully.
H is the closest we get to 4g.but if the icon is bothering you perhaps you can change it in your rom settings depending on the rom you're running. However H is hsdpa which is the closest to 4g that your going to get! Even the 4g icon is not really 4g. It's usually hsdpa. It's in reality 3.5g. But most people know H icon is as close to 4g as it gets so h icon is good. But if rom allowed it you can change to 4g icon.

Hi all. I live in the Caribbean and got the HTC sensation 4g. I upgraded my mobile package from edge to 4g however I still see 2g. I tried my sim card in another phone and got H+ which I should be seeing on my phone. The phone is running 4.0 is with sense 3.6. The mobile settings is set to gsm/wcdma auto. Any ideas??

You can try to change your data settings to wdcma only. If the signal is available in your area this should give you the 4 G icon. It's worth a try. Here's how it's done. Press *#*#4636#*#* then when the menu comes up press phone information, then another screen will come up, press on your
signal, a sub menu will come up, then press wdcma only, then scroll down and press refresh. This should give you the 4G, or H. Which is also 4G. However this must be done every time you reboot device so remember the code. Also, this will only work if 4G is available in your area. I use this method because I keep going to Edge, even through 4G, is available in my area. It works like a charm for me. Now I received my 4G instead if slow edge! Hope this helps! Let me know. Best wishes.
