While we appreciate your gesture, your host will suspend you and you'll lose your data. This is an unfortunately fact, as you appear to believe that you have "unlimited storage" - something that quite obviously does not exist. The majority of hosts that offer this ("unlimited" plans), limit you based on the fact you cannot simply host large files to download, or will suspend you for ToS infractions of excessive CPU, either way they'll get rid of you so they don't lose money. Unfortunately, this is a well known practise called overselling, something we will all fall foul to when purchasing our first hosting package(s).
More specifically, "unlimited storage" is fair share and the more problematic to enforce. Unlimited bandwidth is easy, a full month @ 10Mbits = 3.3TB - a sensible amount. They'll just throttle the server to make sure no-one can use too much bandwidth, if they have to. Realistic servers are around $200/mo/ea and have 4-10TB of BW, even if you bought that, it isn't "unlimited".
Not to rain on your parade, or anything.
thanks benko ^^

already tested
I used 142GB
trust me i got lots of space
my hosting company responded when asked
Other Hosts: "UNLIMITED GB!!!!"
.... to which we had no choice but to reply ....
"UNLIMITED + 50GB!!!!"
Bump/update
To be quite honest... Your host is lying. There is no such thing as unlimited storage or unlimited bandwidth (Unless you're on a very expensive unmetered port).
Anyhow, i think i'v proven with the kitchen that my limit is VERY high
STILL offering this to developers
And now for members to a very good price

Hi everyone,
I am sorry for possible offtopic, but I need your help in find new web hosting provider as soon as possible, because my current host (bluehost.com) is kicking me off, they say 'your account is using a lot server resources', but my website gets only about 200 visitors per day and my disk usage is 1500 MB (maybe they do not like that?)
Anyway, what would be your recommendations for getting reliable web hosting? Where are you hosting your websites? Are you happy with your providers?
I am now checking http://www.hosting24.com/ - offer looks very nice, but is it real that they can provide unlimited disk space?
I have contacted them about this question and they say something that "These days 500GB disk drive costs only $30 per month, so if some day we will run out of disk space we will simply add new 500GB disk drive with almost zero costs and you can continue uploading without any problems".
What do you think about it? Maybe things have changed in last 4 years? With my current provider I get only 2GB of disk space for $10 per month..
Any ideas and suggestions are much appreciated.
if your website is not that complicated then host it your self. it is really not that hard.
how would you host a website yourself
here are the basics. i have my server located at josefcrist.no-ip.org
it is not on right now because it is not hosting any thing but my personal ftp server.
http://www.desktoprating.com/Web-Hosting/Hosting-your-Website.htm
This isn't in the right forum, BTW. There's an off topic forum around for this :-D
I've used godaddy for a while and they've been pretty good, you might want to give them a try...not the best, but good in terms of price, depending on what you're looking for.
Bluehost is known for such crap and paying 10$ is very high.
I prefer followings:webhostingpad.com or hostmonster.com
I don't know about webhostingpad, but I know hostmonster looks rather shady to me. I was looking for hosting a while ago and came across several places that sounded very good, but when I looked them up, for each one, there would be sites saying how bad they are and recommending other hosts, which had the same things said about them on other sites. ("review sites") All in all, the sites look like they were *very* similar, and I think it's just one business selling hosting under many domain names and trying to build "credibility" of one or two names by spitting on another. Look them up and see if you can follow a chain and find a pattern...I don't have any proof on that, but it's my $0.02
Attention all Developers, I have more web space than I know what to do with! I wan't to contribute to the community, as this is the best way I know how. You will get a sub-domain with as much data space and bandwith as you need. Well as much as you need for your android work, I can't back up your computer. Anyway if you are interested I will gladly host your files.
You will recieve:
SFTP access (includes shell)
Unlimited Data (within reason)
Unlimited Bandwith
Sub-Domain at blueman9.com
And if I host enough devs I will spring for a proper Android related domain name.
Best way to contact me [email protected]
I am now hosting files for:
Maxisma http://maxisma.blogspot.com
Same here guys! I have a couple of massive reseller accounts, so if you'd like to space either on a subdomain or your own domain. Let me know!
bump, in order to bump apparently i need a longer reply. LOL
Always up
Just popin it up again to see if anyone else wants some free web hosting love, already got Maxisma.
Bumper

Stop posting new post is somebody is interesting he will contact you by MP.
If you haven't receive any MP probably devs already have all they want.
Where are your servers based, and how much bandwidth do you guys have?

Yea or perhaps its so buried by every one posting on the roms threads. "Just installed your latest update!" that the devs don't see it. It's usually not somethign they are searching for. The have rapidshare, it just sucks, cause we all have to deal with adds and slow downloads.
And I'm sorry is 1 post in 17 days really that annoying? Especially when I am offering services for the benifit on all at xda dev? You really should find better things to post on.

California, and I don't have a limit on bandwith. I'm sure it is, but my hosting company says they don't care how much I use. We will see but it's reliable.
So I was thinking...almost every contribution we are privileged to have are hosted in a myriad of locations (rapidshare, megaupload, mediafire, etc...) which have links that may or may not work due to loads, due to proxy issues, due to solar flares?
This lead me to a possible project idea. I have a hosting solution which may come in handy if you guys think this is a worthwhile idea...
basically this is what I can offer...
// copy/pasted from my monthly invoice
Bandwidth:
Total Bandwidth Provided: unlimited GB
Total Used So Far: 7.527 GB
Estimated Usage For Cycle: 42.151 GB
Storage:
Total Disk Space Provided: unlimited
Month Average: 33.4 GB
Currently Using: 36.1 GB
Estimated Average Usage: 35.5 GB (at end of billing period)
So as you can see, space and pipe are not of any concern to me.
Would creating a file hosting solution for all projects (themes, apps, random source needs, roms, whatever) be of any use? If so, how would you guys like to see this setup? If not, that's cool too!
I am completely open to suggestions
not sure if you ever herd of cydia, or installous for the iphone. It was a app that housed link to various apps and themes.
maybe something like that? gotta start with the server to host, then build interface.
-Brandon
of course I've heard of Cydia. I think that may be overkill but not something I am willing to rule out.
Basically I want to get a feel for if this is a solution that those giving back to the community would actually use. I know I know..if you build it...
So basically something like AndroidSpin already has? More direct link hosts would be great. Especially when new roms come out and the server is overloaded with downloads and your speed is crap.

Agreed. Offers such as these are very generous and often go unappreciated. AndroidSpin has this set up well with most devs onboard. Maybe PM SimonWalker and offer a mirror service, because as Know-Fear said, a hot release drops and the race to be first can cause bottlenecks. Or do your own thing. Whatever happens, just wanted to say thanks for thinking of us.

I completely forgot about androidspin. Setting up a mirroring service may be the best solution. If he has people on-board already it makes no sense to fork such efforts.
Shooting a pm off.
A mirror solution would be a good choice.
Most of the time we have very few issues, but lately we experienced issues with HostGator.
We are in the process if switching to a dedicated host.
We currently transfer at least 6,000gb a month, and host aroung 40gb of files.
A mirror that could help take some of this load would be great.
We'd need to come up with a solution to Sync the files between any mirrors as well.
This is already listed in the Open Community projects on AndroidSPIN as something to look at in relation to the Community Release Database Project that is currently underway.
You can find more here.

a dedicated solution is a MUST with numbers like those. As stated above, there are no caps with what I can move and how much space I can take up. Sooooo...

Hey guys, not sure if this is the right forum for this idea, but I have a webhost account that I already pay for and get 150gb of space and 1.5tb of bandwidth each month. I host 3 tiny websites on it and have a crapton of space and bandwidth left. In an attempt to give back to the devs on here for all their hard work, I'd like to offer to host ANY ROM for ANY DEVICE on my webserver , free of charge , with no strings attached. My way of saying thanks for doing kickass work all the time. If anyone is interested, send me a PM on here or email me @ [email protected]

Make sure that what you host lacks proprietary binaries, otherwise you could be subject to C&D's.

Thanks for the heads up kind sir.
If that hosting is your generic $10/mo for all you can eat plans, forget it. After the first few roms start consuming some serious bandwidth, your host will find a way to get rid of you. Simply because, most servers have a global 2TB/monthly allotment - so offering 1.5TB to a single account is just plain overselling and are screwed if you use it. I'm pretty sure this is the case because you stated that the websites are small, so chances are you haven't hired your own dedicated servers for them.
Not having a dig or anything, really kind thing to do, just don't want you going through the hassle then getting yourself suspended in the process.

Its godaddy if that makes a diff.... I'm still up for trying
I was thinking of something similar. Give me a little more time to finish up my site. I host my own site from my living room. So I dont pay host fees. Might be able to help out.
Well, I have web hosting service in Thailand.
But it is for Local P2P not for web, so they not offer me an International Bandwidth.
Things I need just 600 baht/month for additional IP Address and International Bandwidth (not sure for the price).
I have 180GB Partition for storage something but I can offer it for storage.
PS. International Bandwidth maybe very bad because I didn't co locating at CAT IDC. The next things is I can offer an unlimit data transfer.
PS2. 34baht=1USD
i heard its impossible or difficult to hack usb tethering on the sprint epic 4g. i might refuse the new package and keep my touch pro 2 instead.
can anyone confirm if it can or cannot be done? obviously you can hack root on the device. what do?
OP note: found this http://www.junefabrics.com/android/index.php but is there a way through ipfw or linux hackery to do it free? Like on TP2 I just load MightyROM and it works .. no issues. No costs...
Here is a way to attach a keyboard if I need to get indepth with hacking this stupid feature to work. I pay for unlimited... this is nonsense. I was excited about this phone but if I can't tether that's wack...
http://jkontherun.com/2010/02/17/how-to-add-a-usb-keyboard-to-an-android-phone/
Once it's rooted then you can install wireless tether. Don't know about the timetable for that though, I just rooted my Evo this morning.

No to sound like a prick, but regardless of the spirit of modifying/hacking our own devices to achieve more feature rich experiences; you should remember the moral side of this aspect.
I wish people didn't rant about this sort of stuff; I have no problem helping my fellow forum members achieve the features they seek, but when you rant like you just did, I'm forced to remind people like you that even if you do pay for unlimited data, you agreed to a contract that doesn't include unlimited data through tethering, only unlimited on your phone. No if's, and's or but's about it.
So please, next time, just keep that sort of opinion to yourself. People like me will help you out anyways. We don't need to know what side of the morality issue you are on.

Your morality points have validity, but the moment Sprint decided to use the free open license Linux based OS on their smart phones and then CHARGE extras for features that technically are built into the OS they pretty much voided any right they had to restrict network access. The only option they have is to not support the hardware if you choose to modify it.
The whole point of Linux is open and free. If they wanted to enforce an extra charge on tethering they should have gone solely with Widows OS based smartphones.
Also being on a soapbox is just as bad as ranting in my book..

He signed a contract. And the operating system they use on phones does not change the fact that they own the towers and the bandwidth. They can charge for it's use in any manner they choose. You don't have to sign the contract and use their product.

And we sure didn't sign to getting rammed up the rear an extra $10 for 4G when we paid for 4G when we buy the phone. It's like buying a car that has a V8 engine then getting charged an extra $1000 monthly because the car is able to go over 110 mPh and only so many other cars can. It's all un-moralistic in some ways and IN FACT a violation/breach of the contract that subscribers originally agreed to. Contracts bind both parties not only the disadvantaged! What about when we pay for service that's not delivered as promiosed, such as outages, bad coverage areas, slow data, etc... We can go on and on about morals.
By the way, why are you even on our forum standing on a soapbox for Sprint and such. You're a troll and if that's the case, every thread on this forum has some controversy that you seem to love debating. Im sure you don't own the network, nor are you the CEO, so what's the use of you making yourself look even more idiotic? Beat it scum!
