[REQ] Small mod to Droid-x KB - EVO 4G Themes and Apps

The keyboard on the Droid X has been released and modded to work on an EVO, and some other 2.1 devices.
I think it is a great KB, and will use it over the HTC KB, I like the space between each keys, the speed, and the multi-touch.
The KB looks simple and is very easy to type on, in fact it finally has the biggest feature I want on an android KB, it corrects commonly misspelled words, but does not display them, or suggest them. This feature is cool but IMO, adds clutter to typing. For example, when typing "heklo" on the the keyboard, it auto corrects it to "hello" without displaying words or suggesting them like on the HTC and Stock Android KB.
Now, the purpose of the post. The only thing that Would make this KB perfect for me is to change the background color behind the keys to a grey color, I provided an image with something that I would like using Paint.
I have never developed for android and have no idea how to do it, but if someone who knows how to do it, could simply open up the code of the app, and just change the background from white to a grey, that would be awesome.
Many people would prefer it IMO, and it is a better typing experience because the colors are different and the keys are more noticeable, making it easier to type more accurately.
I provided a screen shot to show what I was talking about, and the original .APK of the Droid X KB.
Any help is appreciated.

If someone could point me in the right direction in finding it, I would be more than happy too. I'm looking through it now, if i figure it out......... I will make a black one

Like I said I have no idea how to develop, but tried something out, maybe it can help you.
I use Astro (file explorer) and when I open it I click browse file.
click 5th option=res>drawable-land-hdpi>then down to keyboard_background.9
I copied that to my computer, edited the pic which was originally white, and then changed it to the grey I wanted, I then deleted the original file to the .APK and then copied the version I edited on their and tried to install it.
But when I went to install it, it says application can not be installed.
If someone could explain it to me, I know because I edited a key file in the app, It probobly won't work or install properly, but does the whole .apk have to be refinalized and ready to install with the change I made to install right?

You might just need to resign the .apk.. not 100% sure though, never did it.

How do you do that?

If I'm not mistaken, this keyboard FC on Froyo

I'll just post the apk. It's weird how the space button is having the shadow stretching thing going on...... maybe someone can lend a hand.
If you already have the multi touch keyboard installed- uninstall-then install this one-go to settings-then uncheck then recheck multi touch keyboard- change input method in text field

Thanks so much, its people like you that make this website what it is.

It's nothing. I realized, while texting someone, that the weird shadow is on the orginal keyboard too

Haha, you dont need the menu's to be in English, it is the selection color for the rhodium menus that changes from green to black
Thanks Burningwheels, I added your fix!
Nice.
How about your top task bar (vista looking) : where and how did you get this !?
I love this, it looks really great!
Is it possible that you could make a complete replacement of all the green colored menus to this black one?
Thanks in advance

I'm sorry I was on holiday so I couldn't answer your question. The reason for your problem, is that you probably have another menu installed. It could be the rhodium or the tachi version. I've made a skin for them too: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=535351
Good luck!
Might be worth looking at a post I started back in June
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=520663
Alternatively Max TF3d Application lets you change the menus quite easily and conveniently without having to worry about a hard reset. cant find the link but if you search the forum it will turn up
But that's for manila, I made this to work with the menus in windows.
Nevertheless I haven't tried that tool but it sounds good.
I use cfc gui for tf3d sknning, it works very good.
Thanks for you post.

StarfieldModded LiveWallpaper

Hi Everyone,
Here is my first (modded) live wallpaper, all thanks to britoso and obviously the original creator, We Like CAPS!

it works, but not perfectly. The background needs to be made tileable.
Things I had to do
1) uninstall the old apk.
adb uninstall -d com.kalicinscy.wallpaper.starfield
2) sign and then install this one.
adb install -r StarfieldLeopard.apk
3) enable "Background" in LWP settings.
Screenshot and apk attached.
edit: removed attachments.
thanks got it, when i have that working i will let you know. in the mean time can you check what happens if you put the full wallpaper in the assests/texture folder? maybe the width measurements i made on the first one was not adequate. Unless the exact measurements are coded in followed by making the image tilable. If that is the case, i will put some effort in to making a tilable version of the wall.
It might get really slow though!
the file has to be renamed to starfield_04.png
I used the gimp's filters->map->make seamless tool and it helped a lot.
Its not perfect. Added a bluish version too.
edit: removed attachments.
thats awesome mate, i am a newbie here but already feeling good that senior guys are helping us out! You think you can recode the black stars to white though?
One final request bro,
>here<
is the final image i made using your gimp concept, it worked out well with a slight touch from ps cs4 , could you use this and attach the final apk for me.
Thanks
Below is a new colored icon aswell for the new starfieldlep edition!
All Done! ^Check the first post!! ^
can I check the source for problems?
really cool, i like this new bg than the original.
question, why are some star streaks black instead of white?
Are you finished working on this apk? I mean wallpaper.. The pictures are absolutely stunning. I dont have a N1 yet (42 more days till I do) and I could see this being a full-time wallpaper when I do get one.
I like this Live Wallpaper, but sometimes the app is closed with an error
is there any way that i can get the source so that i can work on errors in it?
Sorry guys for the late reply, but thanks, @samir5421 i downloaded the apk by googling as i have not rooted the n1, if you have a rooted version i am sure you can download the updated apk (starfield) from the market and fix the errors :S
I think the version I have downloaded was a pretty old build compared to the one that is up on the market right now. I am attaching the files I made changes to aswell as the original apk.
@cdmove, I am not actually any good with this, I am just a graphics designer and so i wish someone could get into the guts of this and change the black streaks to white as I have no knowledge on how to edit android resources yet.

yup and also the stars start of as black [blending into the original bg(b/w)], and move to white, which actually makes sense as or else there would be too many white dots on the screen popping up at the same time, but if its possible to change the gradient from black to white to white to white we could judge it for ourselves.
any fix yet on the fc's? i really like how this looks!
stars with background really slow. maybe you can change the star's background color instead of use an image.

[Boot Animation] Android Scribble (optimized for incredible)

Original creation by Gla'DOS:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696193
Please use one of many instructions to push this boot animation to your phone.
Unzip the android_audio.zip and push the mp3 file.
Leave bootanimation.zip alone and push that file.
All credit goes to Gla'DOS, I only resized the images and added the audio. This runs smooth on my incredible, stock speeds UV.

Sorry guys, attachments didn't work. OP updated with links.
Thanks! This looks pretty good. I think all the Droid "eye" animations are pretty annoying.
I installed without the sound, because I like my boot animations silent as well.

Nope, all you need is a working SDK install, no root needed (you are pushing files onto non-protected parts of the file system). You can still foul up your phone, but would highly rare if you follow one of the many guides recommended by the OP.

cool beans. thanks for the help!
I downloaded SDK at the developers site. In the packages section it includes a bunch of stuff pertaining to 2.2. I don't want to download those correct?
It wouldn't harm/cause problems as far as using ADB, but you don't need them, so save that room for pr0n... because as everyone knows, Android is for porn!
Call me immature, but this video always makes me laugh =).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IraQfhlMwi4
What does it mean by PUSH item in SDK?
Works great, thanks a lot!
Flashable version
I could not get the animations to stick using adb, so I found a flashable boot animation and replaced the ani with the scribble ani.
Just flash in recovery. Works great!
Flare version here.
No audio on either. You can get that from first post.
(I take no credit for the animation or flashable files. I just put them together)
Maybe a red scribble instead of the green? Possible? Appreciate it if so.

Yeah should be easy pickings (what the hell, why did I type that?!). I need to wake up and drive to PA in a couple hours anyway, so this will give me something to do, thx!
Edit: Here you go, I hope this is what you were looking for. Even though I picked a colour I thought was red (I extracted a colour out of jonnybueno's Red Sense Theme), it turned out looking a bit orange on my screen. I am editing this on my personal laptop (which is not colour optimized, the hardware to do so is currently in storage as I make the move back to college), so if you'd like a different colour, just give me HEX code or provide an image you would like the colour of red to be extracted from. Take a look at the animation first though, maybe it's only orange-y on my screen.
Well...
I had nothing to do (besides watch Adult Swim) until daylight broke and I hit the road so I made a second attempt. It's better but it's still not where I would like it to be. Also I am noticing that the 2nd batch of images (the one that repeats) seems to be a shade darker than the intro images. Here is a comparison of the first "orange-y" images and the second, slightly less "orange-y" images. I'm going to leave it as-is for now. When I return tonight, if anyone has requested the exact colour of red they would like (like said before, in hex format or an image I can lift the colour from).
First Attempt:
Second Attempt:
Off I go! bb tonight, have a good week all! - DBG
I've made a red version of this but it has a spinning circle indicator!
I take no credit for it, I modifed it from the post here
Flash it with a recovery manager. Enjoy!

Find button2 and button1 and switch them
For HTC ROM repeat operation additionally for:
framework-res.apk\res\layout\zzhtc_alert_dialog_holo.xml
com.htc.resources\res\layout\alert_dialog.xml
Also you might want to change buttons order in PackageInstaller.apk
To do that you have to switch "left" and "right" attributes for the following tags:
in install_confirm.xml
in op_progress.xml
in uninstall_confirm.xml
And please don't ask, "why do we need this? it is good as it is".
Who needs this, knows why.

No, I don't think so. It's for on-screen buttons, not for hardware ones.
There are some key mappings in \system\usr\keylayout folder. Maybe you should dig in there.

can you tell me what edit program you use to edit this mod ?
Thank you for posting this mod! The flipped OK/Cancel buttons were driving me absolutely crazy. Just wanted to post an FYI for others in my boat. I have an EVO 3D and just upgraded to ICS and the XML files are all compiled. I've never hacked binary XML before, so while this is small fry stuff for many, for me it took a while to figure out what to do. I ended up using APKTool to decompile the framework-res, hand edited the XML in Notepad++, used APKTool to recompile it, then copied the META-INF folder back into the apk...
One gotcha. When recompiling, there's a resource file that is apparently malformed according to APKTool so I had to dig for a while to figure out how to resolve that, then I found this post. Thankfully, only the anims.xml file was messed up for me, so I only had to do the first step to get it to recompile.
Hope this helps somebody else out there.
Sorry to kick an old thread, but does anyone know if this fix will also fix the call answer buttons on ICS/Sense 4? Or if not, how to do that? I could honestly get used to the dialogs, but the call answer buttons are going to keep driving me crazy because they go against the ingrained behavior from practically every single phone ever. Thanks!
Could anyone advice on how to recompile the famework-res. apk? Try to do using apk manager, but it seems to be a bit complicated. Apk manager says it has created some "keep" folder in which I must delete the edited apk as well as one more file, but after that the original apk size reduces a lot, and one folder within it disappears. Kind of strange. Wonder if there anything about decompiling system apks using apk manager?
Anyone would help me on that matter?
Could fix the framework but stuck with packageinstaller.
Guys, in description for packageinstaller, does "To do that you have to switch "left" and "right" attributes for the following tags" mean you have to switch words "left" and "right", or "id/ok button" and "id/cancel button"? Which fields are to be changed?..
Is Google kidding us?
They change it in every android update >_<
I just success switch in framework-res.apk; I have mod PackageInstaller.apk but not thing change? Install/Cancel button still at there.
Plz, U can mod it for me? I have change left<->right but nothing change Install/Cancel button.

I could change framework-res ok, too. But fail to change packageinstaller - get a system error on my android device no matter what I change in xml file. Either the decompilation goes wrong or the apk installation on the device goes wrong.
Anyone has a hint on how to make packageinstaller work as advertised?

New Simple Flat Style Theme [Root to get rid of trial]

Hi everyone! This is my very first attempt at a theme and personally I found a lack of super simple themes so I decided to create a flat style theme for my device and just wanted to share it.
Along with the theme I have added a wallpaper and it was a picture that I took with the S7 itself a just last night in Downtown Toronto. Hope you guys like it! If I get good input I might try to make more and create advanced themes. The lock screen also has a snow effect kind of to represent the fall time is passing and winter is coming
Thanks goes to:

Please leave a thanks if you liked it, and if you hated it, tell me why so I can improve it
P.S. I didn't change any of the icons, I am looking towards doing that for the next release, IF this gets good feed back
You're right, there aren't many simple themes. Theme store sucks a bit. When it comes to suggestions maybe you can change the tone of blue, make it a bit darker; and background grey a bit lighter. I like how you made the lines in phone app invisible, I hate them. I love the icons the way they are. Also, maybe you can change the yellow message buble.
And I was wondering if you encountered any problems with theme editor because when I render preview pictures some are glitchy.

Thanks for the feedback! I'll be working on those changes then in the morning but I understand why you'd want the blue darker. The background I did kick it down a notch and made it a little off white but I can adjust that too. The yellow message bubble! Shoot forgot about the messaging app, personally I use Textra so I don't normally use the stock app.
As for the theme editor, I have had no problems running it at all actually, I just downloaded it today and it worked right after install. Are you sure your computer is up to date? Or maybe the theme editor needs a dependency like Java? Although it would normally point that out of that was the case. Are you using the one I linked above? It worked fine for me
Anyway, thanks for the feedback!
