New super user app
MOD EDIT (dsixda): Updated instructions follow -
Instructions
Requirements:
Motorola Milestone with Android 2.0 or higher
If you have a Milestone with Android 2.1 or higher OR you have a Telus Milestone (with Android 2.0.1 or higher), then follow these steps to ensure you have downgraded to the vulnerable recovery with exploit (thanks to Ireas for these instructions):
For this we need a Only-Recovery SBF file which we can flash via RSD Lite
First install the USB drivers from Motorola
Then you need the RSD Lite Tool | Linux machines can use the linux flasher (created by [mbm])
And the Recovery-Only SBF (which will downgrade the Recovery Partition and not the system)
Start the RSD Lite, select the SBF file
Plug in your phone (while it's off)
Go into the Bootloader Mode by holding UP (on the hardware keyboard) and press Power-On for 2-3 seconds
Now select your phone which should be now visible in the RSD Lite tool
Press Start
The phone will reboot 1-3 times during the downgrade process. DO NOT unplug it
Usage:
Download Open Recovery (choose one):
Skrilax_CZ's version (requires account registration): http://modmymobile.com/forums/401-motorola-milestone/531599-open-recovery-v1-12d-06-07-2010-a.html
G.O.T.'s mod of the above version (more features): http://groupoften.wordpress.com/g-o-t-s-openrecovery/
Extract the contents to the root of your SD card.
Reboot your phone into recovery menu:
Turn off phone
Press Camera button, then press Power. Hold them both till you see recovery screen. (If this doesn't work, open the keyboard and try X + Power)
Press Volume Up and Camera button at the same time till you see the recovery menu.
NOTE: If you get an error about "EOCD Marker" at this point, that means you did not flash the vulnerable recovery properly. Go back to previous section, re-flash vulnerable recovery with RSD Lite, and after it reboots, turn off the system. Keep the USB plugged in to the PC. Turn it on again while holding down the keyboard Up key. RSD Lite should now indicate "PASS".
Apply the update.zip
You are now in Open Recovery. You can now root the phone, do Nandroid backup/restore etc.

Have you flashed the vulnerable recovery SBF? This will not do anything to your phone or your data other than make it receptive to the update.zip file. Next, you go into Open Recovery which should work this time, and do your backup before trying to root.

As far as i know 2.1 does NOT have vulnarable recovery for this to work, so you will first need to replace recovery with vulnarable one, you have it all in first post.

Thanks to the original poster and to adendum. I have stickied this thread. Hope you don't mind the edits, I'm just making it easier to follow for newbies

thanks for the guide, iamdarren -
but being an original owner of a Telus Milestone which had the 2.0.1 (or whatever it was ver) I managed to update it to 2.0.1 brazilian version from a 2.1 update post awhile ago - it doesn't work.
I'm getting the error:
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command
then when i try to apply the update.zip
--Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:EOCD marker occurs after start of EOCD

I have flashed the vulnerable recovery SBF clearly outlined in the guide, and went off without a hitch. Applying update.zip fails still. I have been trying to get root access to this sob for quite some time and I'm losing my marbles here.
Does anyone have any other suggestion why for some of us this error persists?
Thanks guys.

Try flashing the the Telus 2.1 shipped ROM first (from the Motorola site), then flash the vulnerable recovery again, and then flash the new update.zip.

I'm unable to find a SPF file from the Motorolla site. Any other suggestion for a SPF I can try? :]

I've been reading and tweaking with my telus milestone phone for far too long, and have found the solution, but I can't post link to site, this place won't let me. Any suggestions?

Problem with security Update after getting Root Access

Hi,
as i already told in another thread, i just successfully rooted my magic. But now i tried to patch the security update "CRB43" using this link http://android.clients.google.com/up...F.29b87a90.zip
But after i renamed it to update.zip and started the update i get the error:
...
Verifying update package
E:No signature (136 files)
E:Verification failed
Installation aborted.
Isn't this working after the Haykuro procedure?
Thanks and cheers,
Dirk
have you installed the latest Haykuro SPL??
If not just install it and it should sort the problem.
Same problem with the latest Haykuro SPL (the patch check the number version... 1.33.2004 != 1.33.2005 hyk) and check the touched file signature.
we need, to solve a problem, a clean image of system and unroot the magic
have you tried re rooting and then apply the last SPL?
this is because the recovery.img you are using is for test-keys. not naturally signed updates.
i wasn't aware you guys had an update! i will release a build for this ASAP
haykuro Can you provide us a untouch SPL (004)
thanks
guys, am i sort of a stupid?!? my update wont apply too... i've got the italian vodafone magic rooted... but i miss the simplicity and the safety of a standard non rooted device... i really want it back...
is there a guide to easily revert the procedure and get the software like when i had may magic unboxed?!?
thank you all for the efford, it's just that all this doesn't suit for me =)
we don't have original recovery.img, but can we mod the security update signature, a it work with test-keys recovery ??
hi!
in the security update zip, dir /system ( http://android.clients.google.com/updates/signed-vfpioneer-CRB43-from-CRB17-KF.29b87a90.zip ) there is the orig "recovery.img"
move to dir tools/ of sdk, open terminal with magic in fastboot mode, "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" and now open recovery mode (home+power, 2times).

simply with orig recovery.img you can't flash rom with testkey (rom cooked..)! but root access remain on your rom.
however, after the update crb43 you can reflash haykuro's recovery.img!
ps: i'm using haykuro's spl, but my magic doesn't notify me system update, therefore i can't try update...
pps: sorry for my english
i think haykuro as removed the OTA update function from his releases for obvious reasons.
I tried this and on the surface it looks like the recovery has flashed the original fine as I now get the original recovery utility.
When it launches I get - E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
When I try to apply the new security update from /sdcard/update.zip I get:
--Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
Installing update...
E:Failure at line 4:
assert getprop("ro.bootloader")
== "1.33.2004" || getprop("ro.bo
otloader") == "1.33.0004
Installation aborted
Have I missed something and can someone help me out?
I retried and flashed with the recovery.img within the security update and now I get:
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
When I try to apply the new security update from /sdcard/update.zip I get:
--Install from sdcard...

Any ideas?
Any news about this particular problem?
Has anyone successfully updated their Sapphire with the update CRB43 on a Rooted phone? If so - please can you explain your method.
This thread seems to have stopped
Solution: Update Rooted CRB17 to Original CRB43
To update rooted Magic you need:
1) Original system.img from previous backup with nandroid
Flash in hboot mode with fastboot
2) Original SPL 1.33.2004 or my SPL mod http://uploadbox.com/files/88b081fe77
rename in update.zip and flash with haykuro mod recovery
3) Original recovery.img (i create a fastboot version) http://uploadbox.com/files/3baefad7c7
flash in Hboot mode with fastboot.
Bye..
Crios,
thanks again, how did you flash it?
fastboot flash? Or did you use
fastboot boot?
Could you write the whole fastboot command down?
Thanks for your continued assistance

any idea to root my milestone or gain superuser access ?
milestones can't be rooted, they have a signed bootloader (you would need Motorola's signature to root it)
the droid X is rumored to be the same way when it comes out
got root...? yeahhhhh
I have mine rooted with the latest 0.36 update.
How...??
Simple... use Group Of Ten (G.O.T.) open recovery!!

Yeah...No. There is a difference between gaining root access, and having an unlocked bootloader. With root, you can theme and run applications that need root.
With an unlocked bootloader, you can load custom Roms.
The Milestone has root. I'm going to predict that the Droid X will also have root to this effect *knock on Wood*
Anyway, GOT Open Recovery is the easiest way to get it once you flash the vulnerable recovery.
Manually, you can follow the instructions HERE. Start with part 2. The error you're getting is most often because you haven't done the vulnerable recovery yet.
You can use this App: UniversalAndroot-1.6.2-beta.apk
You can root it with no problem. First you install the Got 2.2.1 sbf, then followed by the vulnerable recovery, then you get the modaco milestone_root.zip and flash it.
After that again vulnerable recovery, and install Openrecovery, where you can apply an update for any zip such as CM 6 for Milestone.

[Q] Milestone will not install openrecovery of any kind

I came across a modified version of the Telus Milestone firmware called TelusLite. I downloaded it, but it does not have a sbf file. It is a nandroid md5 file and a couple other files and foolders. How do I installl it? I tried repeatedly. I even tried to install G.O.T. open recovery by the camera button/power button menu. But it just stops it saying no file or folder found. I am learning a lot about the phone and how it works but I cannot figure out how to install G.O.T. or any other open recovery software. Am I doing something wrong? Earlier I tried to reflash the stock Telus firmware from the phone by the power button/camera, and it stopped it there as well saying:
verifying package...
E: failed to open /sdcard/update.zip (no such file or directory).
E: signature verification failed
install aborted.
I had to use the dpad up/ power button with RSDlite to flash the phone. Can someone give me some insight. I have spent hours reading on this and still am no further. thank you in advance.
Any help would be appreciated.

Not able to flash roms

please verify your download by comparing md5 checksums. If you use root explorer, you can long-press the file and click properties, it will calculate that checksum for you. If you don't have an app to create checksums, please put the micro-sd card into your computer and use an application to do so on your computer. Compare that md5-checksum to the one provided by whoever you downloaded that rom from. If it doesn't match -> there's your problem. If it does match, something else is probably wrong.

Micromax a60 noob guide.

Bored with stock eclair? Want to install froyo(or custom rom) on a60?But confused with all methods???[/COLOR]
So you are at right place.
Today i will tell you how to install custom recovery on a60 and flash a custom rom.
First of all, you have to download a rom from following available roms for a60:-
1). Jet rom 2.2(froyo) 'rolling out soon'
2). Jet rom 2.1(froyo)
3). Cyborg rom 2.1(froyo)
4). Freek rom v3(froyo) 'rolling on 25 may.'
5).Freek rom v2(froyo)
6).kul rom v1,2 (froyo)
7). Sense rom(eclair)
8). Ice cream sandwich rom(eclair)
Disclamer: Not comparing roms at all.
STEP - 1
:First step in installing custom rom is rooting your a60.
Before it, you should know, what does rooting means?
“Rooting” your device means obtaining “superuser” rights and permissions to your Android’s software. With these elevated user privileges, you gain the ability to load custom software (ROM’s), install custom themes, increase performance, increase battery life, and the ability to install software that would otherwise cost extra money (ex: WiFi tethering). Rooting is essentially “hacking” your Android device.
You install software "root and me" from play store to know more about rooting.
For rooting a60, you should install software universal androot from:-
http://www.4shared.com/android/O-aYPeg8/Universal_Androot_162_beta_5.html
Open androot and then click on go root..
wuhu, your device will be rooted

}
STEP - 2
Now, next step is installing busybox.
Download app "busybox installer" from play store.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.busybox.installer&hl=en
STEP - 3
Now, download clockworkmod 5, made by ngage_me fo our device from:-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1559347
Dont forget to click thanks on thread.
STEP - 4
Now download recovery manager from:-
http://android.podtwo.com/recoverymanager (click on RecoveryManager_v0.37b.zip) amd extract zip and install apk normally.
this will help you to install custom recovery.
Now follow this picture guide:-[
1.Click on recovery in app menu.
2.There click on install recovery.
wait for some time, while app search for all .img files on your sd card.
3.Then click on recovery image name of ngage_me, you downloaded earlier.
4.Let app install recovery when installing comes and then message will come
"current recovery: unrecognised"
5.Now click on reboot into recovery in app.
And you will be in recovery after some time.
*If device is stuck on micromax logo for more than 4 minutes, take battery out, and switch on phone normally. Then repeat step 1-5 for installing recovery. It will work foresure.
STEP - 5
Now you are booted in clockworkmod 5.
Now next question comes, How to use recovery and flash a rom?
First thing to do in recovery is to go to "backup and restore option" and then click on backup your current rom and data. If any thing goes wrong, then this backup(nandroid) will help you to get phone in state it was before.
You can restore this backup from "backup and restore option"
(Make sure you have 300 mb free in sdcard for backup.)
Then, in main menu, click on wipe data before flashing custom rom.
After that, go to "install zip from sdcard" and then choose zip(flashable rom/zip). and let it finish.
When message "zip installation completed" will come, reboot your android(may take 5-10 minutes), and congratulations you are in froyo.

Your new CWM for 2012 sold a60's is not working, i flashed it, & its not showing up while pressing the power+home combination (maybe it's erasing the recovery partition, but not extracting in it), by the way i tested it on a new a60, maybe a week's old, flashed it using the busy box -> recovery manager method..& it's running the stock eclair..
..Another hing i noticed and is worth sharing, the old stock recovery (for a60s manufactured before 2012) also does'nt work the way it's supposed to, it shows up, but can't initiate a wipe or apply any signed update.zip..
..We all our counting on you!!, keep up your good work!! by the way, count on my support in the form of thanks and tesings..

Btw, recovery is made by ngage_me.
But thing you, it doesn't initate a wipe is not dependent on recovery, it depends on rom you are flashing.
And second thing, there's no way to sign rom till now for recovery, even if you will flash rom through stock recovery, it will not be flashed.
Hey Bro I am having some issue flashing Jet 2.1. I have rooted the device, installed the busy box, flashed the modded recovery. When the reboot the phone in recovery mode, it does goes in the recovery mode but shows the a log "E: Failed to find cache partition to mount at "/cache"
E:Cant mount/cache/recovery/last_log
E:cant open/cache/recovery/last_log
E:Failed to find cache partition to mount at cache.
Then i try to install zip from sd card, choose zip from sd card select Jet 2.1.zip. It ends up at.
assert failed: write_raw_image("/tmp/boot.img","boot")
E:Error in sdcard/installations/Jet 2.1.zip (status 7).
