I'm am trying to use Fring and Qik.
I can't get neither to work right. So i have a few questions.
1.Does the other person need to have the app on there phone? And does it need to be running?
2.Can we use this on the 3g network or do we have to have wifi on?

Well i have Qik and Fring running just fine on my Evo... mrono is right except you could argue qik also works from Evo to PC since you can have someone see your live stream. Both run fine for me guess it depends what your trying to do with them

Has anyone been able to port the verizon skype app over to another phone? I would love to get rid of this stupid skype lite crap. They made a big mistake by only releasing to verizon
skype is tied to verizon like sprint tv to sprint, as far as i know that cant happen =[, thats why they cant use wifi while on skype
try Fring, it's in the Market, works not only with Skype (over Wifi AND 3G), but a bunch of other IM networks

When I used fring I had problems where I would say something and it would take seconds to reach the other side...the usual lag I had when over 3G was about 2-3 seconds at worst and 1 second at best. The Skype lite app doesnt give me that kind of lag
nobody seems too bothered.

Skype Lite is what people are rebelling against. Because it sucks.
Hello! I just switched from (i dont really remember what rom i was using) over to DarthLegend HTC Hero Rom and i cannot seem to find the Skype app in the Market. I have tried some other apps like Fring and Nimbuzz but those go through every single message i have sent and received and they dont support conference chats. Can somebody send me a link to the file?
goto 2 shared . com and click search and then put skipe.apk and there ya go!!!
Will this work for all networks and Android handsets? Can you send text messages with it?

I wouldnt of thought so, theres only 2 official apps I believe there's the verizon one which will only work with verizon and then theres the three UK version which only works on android 1.5 and the three network
Look at this thread
oops .
So Nimbuzz or Skype are our only options it seems like?
skype apk

Does anybody know if that apk would work on a t-mobile google nexus one? Thanks to whoever replies.

I didn't know that T-Mobile blocked Fring... I was actually on it using wi-fi last day and it was awesome to be able to use Skype on it without using my minutes!
the old unsupported skype lite (beta) app is still functioning, but not 100% sure on how long. it allows you to talk to your skype contacts, and msg your skype contacts, but it does use your minutes when you are talking to your skype contacts.
So, has anyone tried this with 2.2?
Shows contacts but no way of making a VOIP call
going to try this app out with my N1, thanks for posting it!

Does anyone know if its possible to use the skype for verizon on our Evo? If we could get this working it would be awesome. Wonder if its just a straight.apk. We could port over.
Why not just use Nimbuzz for Skype
Nimbuzz is the only Skype app that works for me now that fring lost support.

This has been discussed before, OP. If you try to run the Skype app from a Verizon phone, as soon as you launch it, it'll say that the app only runs on devices on the Verizon network, and then close.
IM+ by Shape Services also works with Skype. Though, only Nimbuzz will allow you to place and receive Skype calls.
Nope for skype app from verizon but there is a lite version floating around here....
According to Engadget, an update was just released that supports WiFi, so we have to assume that until someone gets a chance to test it on a non Verizon phone, it might work now.
FWIW, I also have an EVO, so I too would like to see Skype on Android, not tied to a specific carrier, though I haven't tried Nimbuzz yet. I just want Skype to hurry up with the development of their app, and support video too, or at least unblock Fring, but who knows if that'll ever happen...
Update: apparently it still doesn't work for EVO. The APK is linked to from one of the comments here:

ah, just read that. verizon is cheap, still have to have 3g on in order for that to work
I have tried a few things such as xeudoxus' modded skype but no luck.
Is there any ways to enable Skype to Skype calls via 3G?

Xeudoxus is the only known hack (that I'm aware of) that allows for 3G usage of Skype in the US. Did you uninstall your non-3G version of Skype before replacing it with the Xeudoxus version?
Yes of course I did. I keep getting the out of space error.
Is there a way to get wifi calling working in these custom roms. None of the non US sbfs or custom roms I've tried has this feature. Is there an apk or something to flash at this point in time?
I've been trying to figure this out using the us group and messing with the build.prop but I haven't had any success. I know for T-Mobile US users it would be great to get this figured out.
dunno if this helps or not, but take a look here and here.

What do you mean by calling? Skype works, Google Talk with audio works too. And I use a sip client called CSipsimple to call landlines and to make free direct ip calls. Don't see how this is different with stock roms because all these functions are from 3rd party software. I haven't tried Gingerbread's native sip client.

Not SIP calling. T-Mobile US has a feature called UMA or Wifi Calling. It basically is a SIP client that routes calls/SMS over the wifi radio instead of the Cellular Radio. It's not exactly Google Voice/Talk or the builtin 2.3 SIP client.

The Defy has it in stock form, but many roms don't include this, as they're made for non-US phones. JBoogie's has it I believe.
