Please place all of your discussions about obtaining root on the Evo Shift here.
Temp root:Temporary root can be acheived a number of ways on the shift the easiest being either z4root app or the visionary plus root app.
Z4root:
download here and install as you would any other apk
open the app and hit temporary root
let it run till you are notified of its success
you now have temporary root!!
*Note you have to reapply z4 each time you reboot your phone
Visionary:
full instructions and the link to visionary can be found here. http://android.modaco.com/content/h...m/320722/19-nov-r14-visionary-one-click-root/
IMPORTANT NOTE!
PLEASE DO NOT ACCEPT ANY OTA UPDATES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
they patched the root exploit on the desire z when they updated you can most definitely expect them to do the same for the shift so please for that sake of everybody being able to get proper root do not accept any updates unless further notified!!!
unless you just dont care about root that is.....
so far, we got a temporary root.
No point in trying unrevoked as it scans for the device name and shows
"sorry, the device 'speedy' is not suppored" (paraphrasing)
wish i knew alittle more about this.
You can get to hboot by Holding down the vol down while powering on
Also in a previous thread bubby323 requested a dump of /system and dnalevelc obliged:
* http://www.digglesworth.net/evoshift/system.7z
In another forum (androidcentral) someone noted that an app called VISIONary works to auto temp-root the Shift upon boot.
* http://android.modaco.com/content/h...m/320722/19-nov-r14-visionary-one-click-root/
Edit: Also there's code to temp root the G2 using a different exploit below. I haven't attempted to run it on my Shift. Possibly not relevant since it has a newer version but could be if an update is pushed to the Shift:
* https://github.com/tmzt/g2root-kmod/tree/scotty2/scotty2/psneuter
got the shift today. MAN this thing is fast! i'd love to see unrevoked release a small update that supports the shift. otherwise i can do it the long way but i can't wait to see the scores once i get a custom ROM on it.
Visonary does work, I turned on temproot on boot and then i pressed temproot now and it rebooted the phone. The phone was either taking its time or got stuck on the 4G for 2-3 mins so I pulled the battery and started the phone up again. I installed connectbot and typed su and got a #. Tried the reboot command and it wouldn't let me so I went into root explorer and it prompted the su app, gave it permission and started hacking away at bloatware..... no luck, it still came back from the grave :\
I successfully Temp rooted with z4root (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953) and I couldnt get the download off the market so I just went to 4shared.com and searched z4root and picked up 1.3.0 which is the latest version....
It worked great and I used Titanium back up and a screen shot app that both needed root.
does anyone think the rageagainstthecage exploit will work on this? i assume people are working on it? cause if it does, that means unrevoked3 could possibly release a new version with shift support, right? since unrevoked is just an automated rageagainstthecage, right?
edit: i mean, for permanent root, S-OFF.

yes, the rage exploit is what works and is what z4root uses. However I couldn't get the actual binary to work from the CLI using adb.
Just curious--with this temp root, will the wireless tether app work? At least until the phone is restarted. I use that app quite a bit with my Hero, to get on the sites blocked at work on my ipad

Yes we finally got a forum
But on to the good stuff and not so good stuff
Even though we only have temp root partitions on the shift can be flashed using dd I won't go into exactly how to do it till I get home because the commands have to be EXACT!!!! Or u risk bricking your phone... I've had to ruu a couple times now
O btw the ruu that was previously leaked appears to be exactly what was released on the shift.

Great tip. It's just a matter of time now...
I ran into a few problems getting back to stock until I remembered a minor detail from my HTC Hero days.
You need to download and install HTC Sync get it here install it.
Reboot your computer
make sure the phone is NOT in USB debug mode and is in charge only mode.
the proper drivers will install. you'll know it's done right if you see ADB pop up as one of the drivers installed. You'll see a warning that HTC sync isn't detecting your phone and that's ok.
Then run the RUU exe all should work fine.
Get the RUU exe from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952224 This is FROYO
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1191959 This one is Gingerbread
Didn't realize debugging had to be disabled.

So even if I've tried going through the rooting process and it didn't work, this will basically put the phone back the way it was before I started that process?

Good sir I can not thank you enough for helping me get my phone back. i don't even mind all the bloatware now. Too bad I can't use the thanks button more than once. I really appreciate it.
Happy to be of service. I can't dev my way out of a paper bag, well I've never tried, but I can share what I do know.
I tried to run the RUU but it failed twice. Both times it would get about 70% finished and it would stop with an Error 110 which says that a file is either open or corrupted. Then it tells you to download the RUU again and run it again, which I did but got the same results. I downloaded it with the anti virus and firewall turned off. Is there another site to download the file from?

Either flash a different rom via Clockwork Mod or run the RUU. If you choose the RUU, be sure HTC Sync is installed, USB Debugging is checked and Fastboot is unchecked.
Thank you! It works!
Just used this thread to get my Inspire back to stock before taking it back for a refund and cancelling service. Decided to go with the HTC Evo3d from Sprint. This method worked returning the phone back to the latest (Gingerbread) and unrooted it from Cyanogen (CM7) ROM. Thanks a ton for sharing your wisdom!
Baffling Issues.
Hey, I have a question. When running this RUU update (downgrade) it gives me this: Error 140: Bootloader version error. Its agravating. I'd love to go back to froyo... I really can't use GB because it blocks tethering. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I take it you're not S-OFF? HTC (and probably others) decided they didn't want users reverting to older versions. You'll have to root, get S-OFF, before you can revert, but if you're rooted, you might as well just use the new andTether from google code:

Just found out at Best Buy that my phone is crap. The memory is out and I have no apps installed, my HD card is empty except for the standard stuff, and I get error that I need to free up memory or something like that. Guy told me to UNroot my phone and call AT&T.
So, this thread is all I need to do that???? Can it really be this easy????
thanks so much,
Patti

Ok, thanks for the info! And this phone has no root, its my Moms phone and she needs the tethering. Eh, maybe we can exchange the phone. Other than that I don't know what to do. credits to this guide: http://www.zenilshroff.com/how-to-root-htc-sensation-android-2-3-gingerbread-smartphone/
1. First download the Gingerbreak.apk file.
2. Save on your computers desktop.
3. Connect the phone to your computer. (do not connect using htc sync)
4. Mount SD card as flash drive as you generally do for USB cable file transfers.
5. Copy the downloaded Gingerbread apk file to SD card root.
6. You should have any File Manager (e.g., Astro File Manager) on your phone. If not, download from Market. These are generally free apps.
7. Disconnect your phone from computer and launch File Manager. You will find in the menu of the phone.
8. Follow the onscreen instructions on File Manager to install APK to your phone from SD card root. You may also use the default application installer software to do this.
9. After installation completes, open the APK.
10. Press ‘root’ button. Simple, isn’t it?
11. The APK exploit will run for some time. Usually it runs for around 10 minutes. Your phone will be rebooted. In case it takes more than ten minutes for auto reboot, please reboot it yourself. Not to panic, this happens a lot of times.
12. Your device is now rooted. Congrats!
13. Make sure that SuperUser app is installed and is running. This is very important for you to enjoy the benefits of rooting.
In order to test if your phone has been successfully rooted, just click a screenshot of your phone. That should show that your phone has been rooted.
Yeah, but does it REALLY work?

Gingerbreak exploit is patched on the SGS II so doubt that will work. Also if phone needs to reboot, no way will root persist due to signed locked bootloader. Go ahead and try but we will need some L33t devs to break this phone.

If the guide has some proof (i.e. a bootloader photo) then I will try it. If not, it's all just based on theory, but nothing practical.

It does say it fails a lot, but still, zero proof that is works, I'm very suspicious that it's all ********
It would be great if we could get this partial root. I personally don't mind not being able to flash custom ROM, but it is very important to me to be able to use some apps that require root permissions like adfree or titanium backup. From what I understand, this 'half-root' should not be very difficult to achieve cause it is not needed to mess with the bootloader for this purpose. The only requirement is to be able to uninstall htc sync for some time.
Here also a link detailing the differences between root levels and clarifying vocabulary. I am posting this cause it has been very useful for me to help understand, so it might also serves others..

I'm not optimistic thought. I am still VERY sceptical of it. He said, uninstall HTC Sync from the PC, as that causes problems with root? VERY random thing IMHO.

Well, a factory reset and trying to run GingerBreak right after hasn't done a thing. It says to reboot after it doesn't succeed after 10 mins, and that this happens a lot. But EVERY attempt I have been rebooting after 10 mins.

just Got my Mytouch today !! i dev for the epic 4g but since i gained employment at Tmobile ive decided to get another phone just curious
how many rom/kernel dev's are there ?
lol.. we just got it rooted. Roms should be out within another month or so..
a month lol not even that long my dude
Well I saw CM7 is being ported by nightly to the sensation. You know the sensation and the mt4gs are like twins with different personality. Also to get a camera apk to work on other rom didnt they released the source for this phone on htc dev site.
Sent from my myTouch 4g Slide.
Yea, I suspect that the first beta roms will start appearing in a few weeks, maybe sooner. But I wouldn't expect stable roms to start showing up for at least a month.
The camera is going to be one of the things holding it back.
I, personally, would like to see some almost stock roms with CPU control....I would like to see sense go away, but it appears that would effect the camera to some extent. Either way, I'm happy to have root at this point. At least I was able to uninstall the bloakware and crap that I couldn't seem to stop running in the background.
Well when I get home tonight ill give a look into the source codes that htc released. I'll let you guys know if the frameworks is in it or not.

Not by htc, by members of xda of course. I've used the MT4GS camera on a rooted ver of the MT4G's 2.3.4 build and it works fine.
And on another note, i've finished the alpha port, i'll upload it to multiupload

DOWNLOADING - I'll keep you updated!
going to take my girlfriends's phone today and try the rom, thanks.
initial install has me hanging at splash screen.
redownloading to make sure it wasn't just a bad download.
interestingly, the install in CWM took like 5 seconds.. literally. so fast I couldn't even read what it was doing.
will report back shortly.
edit: second go-around with a fresh download and I'm still stuck at splash screen. formatted /data, /cache, /system and deleted .android and android-secure on my sd card prior to flashing.
do you need a logcat, Ace?

well I'd happily provide, but I can't get it. never run into this when trying to pull logcat.. judging from that error message, it sounds like /system isn't being written to during install? restoring my backup for now.
I NANdroided, wiped data/cache/dalvik and installed from zip. Like pmcqueen said it flew through the install and rebooted automatically on me. It doesn't look like it actually rewrote/installed anything because my custom boot animation was still there from before. Unlike pmcqueen mine booted up fine, pretty fast actually, but acted as if I had just performed a fresh wipe of the ORIGINAL ROM; it took me through the MT4GS video and was the same rom, only as if I had just performed a factory reset. I wonder if it's clockwork that didn't perform the necessary functions? Are the files/folders/locations different on the MT4GS and that's why it didn't write anything? I didn't get any error messages... It's been a long time and I don't remember how to run logcats, so refresh me, and I'll hook you up. But it sounds like it just didn't install anything at all.
I think I know the issue, i'm working on it right now. I'm about to upload the 2nd test in a few minutes.

So I just got and activated this phone 2 days ago. for some reason, the Market app will not update itself. idk why, it's always doen that on my phones automatically before. in fact, when I just gave my friend my old discontinued 600Mhz LG Ally, It auto updated the Market only minutes after he signed in. what could be causing this?
Dunno - This device hasn't updated the market on my end either, had to do it manually.
You can see my sig 'how to script a market update' for info on how to write a system update to put a new market version on, or in the thread you can download the pre-made package. The version is a bit older now, but thereafter it'll automatically update itself like normal.
I believe this is something on Google's end, where they rolled out updating to the new market by product model - I know they were messing with my Nook Color for a while and it was a pain in the ... to get the market to work in any kind of decent capacity for a while. I'd assume they just haven't gotten to forcing an update on Google's end for our phone.
I used to hate having to swap to the new market, and stubbornly tried to keep the old market for as long as I could - but the new one has grown on me and now I prefer it.
I hated the new market when it first came out on my Sidekick, but not because of the style. I hated how buggy and glitchy it was, constantly force closing and screwing up downloads. Made me curse the hell out of Google all the time for not testing their crap. but once they released a few more updates, all of that stopped. took a few months though.
Seriously, it was just awful. there were times I would just leyt my phone sit there for hours while plugged in, having not touched it or turned on any apps literally for many hours. then all of a sudden, the phone would do a "bzz, Bzzbzzbzz" which is a feature Samsung made to let you know something crashed. sure enough, it would be the market, which I never even opened but somehow managed to randomly find an error to crash itself with.
Root your phone and update it manually. The new Market format actually got better after multiple tries by Google.

I actually just downloaded the .apk from Android Community. I'm wondering though, it it safe to install? I'm not rooted yet, probably won't find the time til the end of the week with finals. I'm wondering about whether installing will cause me to not get further market updates once they're out..

It took me 10 minutes total to root. Just make sure you flash Superuser in recovery in spite of the error messages you will get.

Just get the apk and install. Choose a trustworthy site. My wife won't let me root her glacier. Hers wouldn't uppdate so I copied the system file from my phone and installed on hers just fine. Right over the top.

Here: http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/11/19/download-updated-android-market-v3-3-12/. I have an unrooted MT4GS with s-on and it still installs fine, although I had to reboot, because when I first opened it it kept crashing, but it's fine after a reboot.

If you want to stay local I made a flashable market in this thread a while ago:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1268661
It's attached to the bottom of the first post (which explains in detail how to make your own).
If you flash the dark_market file, it will auto-update after the first time you open it and from then forward.
Thanks for the help, and not rooted tho, but thanks for both quick responds ;-) so those are they only ways to update them correct?

Well, the market is a system app, and the only way to mess with those is to have root that I know of...
Unless you can flash an insecure boot partition somehow and then get adb remount access...
Not sure how to go about that if S-On though.
